Can't say I know much about rooting a fat chick!
Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.
The weight and size of your bike relative to the luggage weight is certainly a factor.
However, don't fall into the trap of plenty, and get bigger luggageAs you do more trips you'll learn what you do and don't need. An over laden bike is no fun, especially in adventure riding.

Nerrrd has been very kind and is now carrying my big bag. Part of the problem is my bike, my luggage and what's in my head. Definitely a learning experience. Now sitting on the beach in te araroa, nice. Going to head back to Opotiki soon then to....?? will decide our route for tomorrow tonight I think.

i decided against my trip for the same reasons, bike, luggage, my woefull lack of experiance and lacking atgatt with the chance of bad weather and i spooked myself, plus iv had two pucker effects in as many days, staying safe staying local
Every motorcycle trip you do ... you will find different. Each one you learn something. Sitting on a beach is nice on a nice day. And you will have many nice days over the years ...
It is good of Nerrrd ... but that's what friends do. Plan changes can be fun. Options are many ... enjoy the process of deciding where you are going.

Suprised this was not on the original route...http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?saddr=...mra=pr&t=m&z=9
Matawai Tavern is much like the Puhoi...old and very interesting.
Good idea, take your time, you've only started learning recently, don't push yourself, I should know! Were in whakatane for the night, pussied out and got a motel. Were both quite tired. Me more than nerrrd, this trip has been very hard for me. Never have I ever used so many gears allllllllll day long, 2, 3, 4 and very rarely 5, I'm usually always in 5th, maybe 4th on the open road. I've had far too many OH SHIT moments the past few days for my liking. Had one moment where I felt like barfing in my helmet on the way to Te Kaha, logging truck had the ROW up a one way road but came around a corner and up a hill bloody fast, couldn't see around the corner, no way, nerrrd managed to quickly pull over into the give way but I didn't have time to pull in so got as far to the left as I could, cosy with the metal barrier and slowed right down. Not sure if that was the right thing to do, slowing down, but I figured if he could see me and could see I wasn't going anywhere I'd be ok, guess I am... nerrrd and I had a chat later thinking how could we have avoided that, don't think we could have, freaking tight corners and he was pretty fast! Tired!
