What would be a good answer to the wanting to travel question? Because everyone wants to travel, it would be hard to answer truthfully without sounding like the first thing you will be doing with your pay check is saving it for your OE.

Im currently looking at changing jobs. Im really not enjoying where i work and feel like i am being actively alienated by the management but im concerned that their lack of support will cast a negative shadow on me to future employers.

    Any tips?

What makes you feel you're being alienated?

As for travel, what kind of travelling are you talking about and when? A few weeks is one thing, a few months another, a year, well..
Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.

I was hired into a irrigation company as a uni graduate with a specialist degree in water science and was told at my interview that i would be mentored and trained by the best system designers in the country and have a role as a GPS/GIS specialist created for me.

A year has past and my typical work duties consist of; sweeping floors, bolting things together and lifting heaving things. All for a meager wage that i was willing to accept as i believed this was a smart career choice.
I constantly get opportunities past over my head and often feel forgotten, when i do complain this to the management i get told what i want to hear then promptly ignored.

Its all incredibly frustrating but im worried that if i give up now that i will look like a quitter.

I come from a long line of quitters. If everyone quit their jobs, everything would get better very quickly

Love my job. 3rd time working for same motorbike company.

First time walked into unopened new store & asked if work available... started next day for 2 days of opening sale, got asked to stay for week to help tidy up, then asked if I'd like to stay on... Sweet!

Left to come over to NZ for a while. When I came back I rang to say hi to friend there & was asked if I wanted my job back... Sweet!

Left to move down coast, 1 day walked into another branch & asked if job advert on window filled... a big boss there said come in next day & intro myself to Manager... Sweet!

    Never had an interiew.

I work bloody hard... they know it.

Just have to stop buying gear

They've got you trapped haven't they .. you're cheap labour ... they just pat you on the head occassionally and back to work you go ...

My advice? QUIT NOW ... (and before anyone says "easy for you to say" .. I have quit many jobs for very similar reasons ... even ones which paid me 70grand and more ... )

Dude, start being a bit more self assertive. Stand up and tell them what you want, not what they want to hear. What have you got to lose, a job that you are not happy with, if you have an employment contract that states that you were hired for a certain role, and you are not doing it, TELL THEM.

As Mr unstuck said ... be more self assertive.

If you are getting told what you want to hear... eg "be mentored and trained by the best system designers in the country and have a role as a GPS/GIS specialist created for me."

If this is not in writing, THEN GET IT IN WRITTING!!! Along with dates, performance reviews based on KPI's, and all that HR BS. If they are not prepared to do that then you have your answer... quit!

    Quoted for truth.

Get it in writing, if they say NO then you have your answer!

Ah Recruitment. Where a person applies, and is selected, then processed as prime candidate (by someone whom assumes they know the industry). They are hired.

Then both the "prime candidate", and said agent disappear. With the cash.

Disconnected are the suitable candidates and the employer.
The employer now doesn't have any money. Or employee.
The suitable candidates still don't have a job or any cash.

Thats basically my feelings too. Although i dont think that was their intentions when hiring me but unfortunately for me i started during a busy time in the industry and they felt like i was more useful as a laborer. Now when things are slowing down their lack of support and development are really counting against me.

I had a performance review a few weeks ago where they had quite a few criticisms about me, most of which i didnt agree with and felt like they were find reasons to not increase my wage. But their latest round of promises were pretty good so i will see if these finally eventuate before deciding to leave or stay.

Get these promises on your contract, or they are worth diddly squat, and they can keep fucking you around as much as they want.
