How about this one from 1971? .. they don't come any worse - The band is called Middle of the Road (I ask you ...) and just the title of this song .. well ...

    There's always been sugar pop.

And there were those who railed against disco.

I didn't mind disco. I never bought any, but I can dance and the babes wore lycra.

HDC nailed it. It's the Autotune thing. I hate that shit and it has become ubiquitous.

Creating the illusion of talent. An "artist" who can't sing can now have their moment in the spotlight.
I bet Milli Vanilli would have loved autotune.

I think you might enjoy this film:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2396566/?ref_=sr_1

It looks at backup singers from the 60's on. It is not dry, or boring, and OMG the singing. The singing is sublime. Great interviews (Jagger, Mr Gordon Sumner, among others) plus archival footage (Bowie, among others).

I have spent the last few days buying and listening to soul/RnB from the 60's and 70's.

One of the interviews is with a producer who says something like "In every record production budget these days there is a line item for "tuning". why the fuck do they need that? Why can't they just do it in tune the first time, because back in the day we had to."

Hate on Phil Spector as much as you want (and you should, he is an AWFUL human being) some of that 60's stuff is incredible. Plus the musicians could play a bit.

10/10 the movie and one for the DVD collection.

Someone was busted last year for doing the Milli Vanilli thing in a stage show. A big pop name too.... cant remember which. The interesting thing was it had zero negative consequence career or publicity wise.

No matter, I'll never be the same again.
