I thought it ran out of fuel before going down, so there won't a great deal of fuel to see. I wouldn't have thought that the engine oil (if that's what jets use) would not be a significant enough in volume to show. Half a dozen cans of Castrol is nothing compared with the volume of the indian ocean

There's a great chance that the plane will be found, the passengers will all still be alive, and this will all be sorted by this time next week.

Aliens whom abduct aircraft are pretty decent in that respect

You just caused me a great deal of googling.

It seems the jet turbines do use a quantity of oil to lube and cool the main turbine shaft via a heat exchanger, with anywhere from half to 8 gallons per engine.
I'd expect the landing gear would hold a quantity of hydraulic oil...

Wouldn't the on board life rafts be of the auto deploy inflate type? Surely they would be freed in an impact and have auto Epirbs too???

Not from what I heard..... Gordie told me he was 'taken' a few years ago, lost all track of time, and woke up a day later with a sore head, and an even sorer asshole..... he had been out with Kickaha and said some of his 'Kens' had gone missing too.....

Finally, it's been found!!!

The latest NASA spacecraft found it sitting on the moon...... but as soon as they spotted it, they couldn't let others see it, so crashed their satellite into it....

If the plane ran out of fuel up in the air, what speed would that bulk be likely to hit the water at. Free falling?

If it glided down onto the sea in a crash landing style, then someone would have been controlling it.

If it was flying at 15,000 feet, then the engines cut out, it would then drop like a rock I'd imagine. The plane would surely tear to bits on impact.

What an horrific end to the lives of the passengers.

If it was under the pilots control, when it did run out of gas, he knew he'd be fucked - in the middle of an empty ocean, no way to survive, so why would he do a controlled soft landing only to survive and be slaughtered by any surviving passengers.....?? Surely he wanted it to end asap? Nose dive in at max speed??

If he was dead/unconscious already, it would have run out of gas, pitched down, banked one way, then spiraled that way, nose diving into the ocean.......

OR.....

He could have parachuted out into an awaiting military vessel and vanished......

I was talking to someone who knows such stuff last week. Most of the critical instrumentation is battery backed-up but the control hydraulics are driven by the engines. But then apparently there's a propeller driven pump that deploys automatically when pressure drops for too long... et viola.

In which case they can be glided, if there's a pilot in control. If not they auto-cycle up and down, velocity causing the nose to rise until they stall and pitch over into another dive. Likelihood in that case is a collision with the surface nearly perpendicular.

Now we're talking. A pressurized cabin and a propeller? This gets more and more like Thunderbirds. So they had a controlled landing on water, like the Hudson River jobbie, then when it sank to 20 fathoms the propeller kick started and off they chugged to port unknown.
