...a really sport oriented mate of mine told his sport oriented boys that, if they ever thought about playing cricket, they could walk to the game and he would stay home and paint and watch the grass grow...a bit like my thinking...I watched a whole test once...that was because we were snowed in...it was the Windies playing Pakistan...I never want to be snowed in with a cricket (bat) again...

    Scotland v Afghanistan

I don't know much about cricket although I enjoyed summer school days watching matches.

Hadn't been to match for a decade when a mate suggested we drive to Dunedin yesterday, and see Scotland v Afghanistan.

Frankly we didn't expect much apart from a nice day in the sun. Presumably Scotland would be too strong.

However travelling to see this match turned out to be one of the most enjoyable sports events for many years. The Afghan minnows held the Scots run rate down, and then turned in a respectable batting effort themselves. Still, when Afghan needed 60 runs to win people started leaving and my mate and I decided they'd lose with dignity.

Well bugger me. They won. Outstanding. Moments like these going down to the last three deliveries are rare and can only be appreciated live at the ground.

    Glad I went.

TV news showed some celebrations of the win back in Afghanistan - nice to see they had something to cheer about for a change.

(is it a real Afghan team or a bunch of Pakistani ring-ins? Its not like Afghanistan is well know in the cricket world, is it?)
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

Yes I thought maybe the Afghan's were English university stars who played in the Home Counties or else in Pakistan. However their captain Mohammed Nabi grew up in a refugee camp and most of them appear to have risen from harsh lives.

One thing which was amusing: Sami Shenwari was on 86 runs when his lower order mate gave a Lance Cairns heave and was caught out. Nabi blew a fuse and gave him fifty words obviously utterly pissed off because Afghanistan really needed to preserve a wicket.

Sami Shenwari went on to loft three sixes and bat 94 runs. It was just bad luck his fourth 6 was caught because that would have brought up his hundred. This guy was crucial - three 6s in the dying moments of the game when it looked like Scotland had the wood on them. Pity he didn't reach his 100.

The article in the ODT re the two handicapped boys and the Afghanistan cricket team was a real tear jerker and said volumes about their quality as people!

IMHO anyway! : link:http://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/33...s-two-new-fans I was very pleased for them with their win!

Edit: That feel good letter underneath that article was trashy bullshit and spoiled the page!

I wished I hadn't tuned in for a bit there it looked like I brought them bad luck but Haddin played really well until Anderson got him out brilliantly!

Good luck to the Black Caps in the second innings - have to go out for tea tonight hope it's all over when we get home! Please let it happen!

They only won because I left the room when they lost their 7th wicket and refused to come back until it was all over. (I had a ceiling to paint which at least gave me something else to think about)
