In today's news:
"In 2008, Mr Key criticised former Labour Prime Minister Helen Clark for not attending the marae on Waitangi Day after she was involved in a string of protests, and Mr Key made it one of his election promises to attend Te Tii Waitangi each year.
Ms Clark was brought to tears during a visit in 1998 over an argument regarding her right to speak at the marae.
At the time, Mr Key said she should "get over it", calling it an "opportunity for her to engage"."
I'd like to change my description to 'hypocritical supercilious twat.'
John Key is not attending because the folk at the Marae are divided over weather to welcome him with open arms, or attack him, weather he should be allowed to speak, or prevented from speaking
If his personal safety can not be guaranteed there is no way he should be attending.
Its not about politics, its about a man's personal safety, but you are not prevented from packaging it however it suits you to fit your personal agenda.
Really, his personal safety ?
Have you met the man ?
I have, and met his personal protection squad too, nice guys.
His car always has a driver in it, the motor running, whenever he's at a function.
Thats the protocol used.
Std operating procedure. ( just in case hey need to get him out of a situation, pronto )
He's in NO danger at all, unless you call getting heckled, and having his feelings hurt.
Don't make more of the situation than it actually is.

RSV Mille: No madam, its an Aprilia, not a Harley. If it were a Harley, I would be pushing it !
Oh it's about politics all right. Or more accurately diplomacy. But the reasons not to bother are a lot more mundane. Attendance by the PM or any other govt rep is a mark of respect to the treaty partners. It's just become tediously obvious over the years that there's not enough resiprocal respect from most of the multitude of groups claiming Maori leadership to allow any diplomatic function to be taken seriously.
Far better to kick their soap box away and celibrate national unity without them.
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon
If the local Iwi could actually show a united front, publicly at least, it would make them slightly more difficult to ridicule.

As a matter of fact, Sue Bradford admitted on Morning Report this morning, that an ambulance WAS held up by the protesters blocking the roads. She said they got out of the way as soon as the police advised them, but the impression given was that there had been a significant delay to the ambo.
I hadn't seen the news today, working
What if it was a major which required multiple Police, Fire and emergency services. In the Queen St inner city area ?
I guess if any protesters were killed by a Fire truck it would reduce the beneficiary expense to the rest of us good honest workers ...
Ok Kawasaki salesman, let's shove you into a group of those old angry bikers that hated jap bikes.
You should be ok & able to talk your way around.
He's made the right call, they don't want him to speak & most of them don't want him there so why should he waste a day appeasing a bunch of pretend aggrieved, divided idiots.
Hey, why don't you guys all rock up, clearly it's going to be a fun day with great company apparently.
