Funny enough the largest users of water and nitrogen are actually horticulture cropping wheat, barley lettuce etc
You can blame the farmers for using the land in the way that gives them the best financial return look to why dairy is a better return than lamb beef or deer or wool.
still... its the numbers and close proxsimaty to water ways... saw a diagrame / space view of the rakaia river, as the rivers have shrunk farmers gone out onto what was river bed, iragators out over rivers padocks like that with cows on them...

In Central Canty - between the Rakaia and the Waimak - the main drainage is the Selwyn and it's tributaries.
That ends up in Lake Ellesmere - and that one's fucked. The Selwyn downstream of Coalgate isn't swimmable any more.
Too much of Canty is light land which historically wasn't considered suitable for dairy. Only economic neccessity - and subsidies drying up - forced the dairy conversions, sheep were much kinder to the land.

as you know thats were I am river over the back fence... unusual being so stony it flows above and below the river bed, the earthquake didnt help...

but what do you mean by "main drainage"
and what do you mean by "subsidies drying up - forced the dairy conversions"

The subsidies have been gone since the mid eighties.
the polution from humans is a bit larger than most people like to admit
For instance large restrictions were placed on the farms that feed the catchment of Lake Brunner at Moana
Thus restricted amounts of fertiliser and Nitrogen special effluent and grazing restrictions where imposed, now the data suggest it was the people of the town itself that were the major issue regarding the polution.
When will we hear the new catchcry DIRTY URBANITES maybe time to restrict them.

PS sheep on hillsides area major cause of errosion and sediment runoff.
they beltch as much methane as cows do when converted to eq stock units and diet.

Didn't lose power. Doubt we got it as bad as you. You've seen our hedges, pretty sheltered in here....

Husa - we used to go to Moana frequently in the 70's. The place has more than tripled in size, yes it's human runoff there.

And the ones who take up all the overhead lockers with clearly larger than 7KG bags.

And jump up as soon as possible when landed even though you still have to wait and then get your bags.

Not everyone needs to get bags mate. If I don't have checked luggage, which is quite often, i'm one of the ones that jumps up ready to go.
