Well I must be my own worst enemy too then. McEwan was my favorite racer because he was HIMSELF and not trying to be something else.

Guess I'm just not cut out for this sport. Little hitler can stick it up his arse. I'll just stick to road riding and the odd track day.

yep, i loved watching hippy too and i also enjoyed racing against him.

however, he's a good example of what sponsors don't want. As I said, it's their money and if you want it there is a cost.

next time wifey and i ride down your way (grandchillen live there), I'll give you a shout.

Thanks for clearing that up. I just cant subscribe to the "do as I say and not as I do" way of life. I take people for what they are and how they behave, not by their words alone. Little hitlers cost was too high for me so he can bad mouth me all he likes.

Don't be silly Bob. At primary school you should have learnt that some people get a much better helping hand than others.

Basically motor racing is an expensive sport. To get to the top, most have to start before they're teenagers. To do this they need support from parents (I don't know many 13 year old's who can just go out and buy a 125). This is no different from any other sport.

The people at the top are talented and work hard. I've got the utmost admiration for these guys but don't kid yourself that there's not 10 times as many other guys out there who would be up there had they been given the chance.

Sadly the days of guys like Niall Mckenzie {*1} and Max Biaggi {*2} are probably over.

that's the absolute truth of the matter. i've met guys who've never raced or not raced much at all who would kick arse if they had the motivation.

at any race meeting the winner is NOT necessarily the best there is; just the best/luckiest in that race on that day.

I even lump myself in that one. I won the BEARs Superstock race at the 1992 World Superbikes in Manfield but only because a crash at the front took out the 3 guys who were ahead of me. I wouldn't have even been on the podium without that piece of luck.

Motivation, personal presentation etc are also key pre-requisites for most employers. Call me a square or a tory, but there are many of us who have a condescending view of the incessant relaxation of personal discipline, dress and speech standards, etc. Having said that I will take people as I find them, in spite of often thinking ''cripes I hope my daughters dont bring home someone that looks like you''. !!!!!

I have seen the wasting effects on talented people who choose to regularly smoke mind altering substances ( or worse ) and as an employer I look to absolutely NOT employ such people. Because of the effect it has on personal judgement, performance and an inability to have a rational, even and ''accompanying'' temperament.

There are a lot of people who just dont help themselves and this is further perpetuated by the handout rather than handup mentality that currently prevails in this country. But there are others who make their own opportunities through being extremely motivated. Lewis Hamilton is a shining example, and he was hardly born with a silver spoon in his mouth

It was in fact a test day and nothing more for myselfe and sam and that is what club meetings are for the fact that it is a bigger event than the nationals dosent mean shit it just means the vic club are doing a great job and all you pussies are to chicken to come do the nationals and learn how to ride fast enough to keep up.
I see all this moaning about the richest guy wins and all this crap I have been racing since 1994 and done it on the bones of my ass untill the past 4-5 years but I have spent enough of my own money to buy a couple of houses in the first 10years simply because I love and I had a some bloddy good results on bikes that were nothing but shit you get there because you will not give up trying and you have talent or you learn the craft over a period of time this bullshit about its the rich guys that wins is usually the people with no talent complaining because they cant keep up.
If it was such a big drama that sam had this gear on his bike and I was so slow that I seemed to be getting in the way why not talk to the riders concernd or the people running the meeting insted of crying behind you fake names on the internet.
Sams the most talented racer to come through our sport since the crafars, slights etc and all you homos can do is bag him for trying to get up to speed to compete on a superbike for the very first time at 19 years of age he had never fired that bike in anger before friday afternoon so all you legends should have been kicking his ass if you are half as good as you say you are.
Now I suggest you all spend less time in front of your computers and try meeting someone of the opposite sex and go get a life if things like club day racing is that upsetting for you all I cant for the life of me think how you survive in the reall world.
    Cheers

So is this the sort of shining example of eloquence and diction that is to be expected of a sponsored rider? You have said that this is Craig's "wit and humor" but for people who dont know Craig personally it comes across as everything you despise. This is a public forum so many who dont know him may see this as an attack on the "everyday" people who dont have the luxury of a sponsored ride.

His dad bought him a go-kart when he was 6 and his dad took up to three jobs to support his racing career. No denying the talent, hard work and motivation but without the extraordinary parental support he'd probably be down Pulse nightclub & smoking pot like most of the lads I knew in Stevenage.

Are there similar programs in place to attract young kids into motorcycling in New Zealand? Lets face it, if you want a career in motorcycling you're facing an uphill struggle if you start at late as 15.

As for a drop in standards and handout society....I blame the selfish baby boomers

It's all changed since I was racing.
I was a salesman and manager and raced for fun. there were only a couple of truly sponsored riders in NZ in the 80's and even into the 90's, very few.

My motivation wasn't to have a career in bike racing, it was to have some fun and do what I loved doing without being busted by cops.

I'm pleased enough with the races I rode but I also admire the determination of the likes of Shaun Harris who had a specific goal and persued his path to success. Same for Anstey, Crafar, Stroud, Haldane, Holden, Hippy, Rees, Molloy, etc etc etc etc (it's a long list) and all the other guys who decided to go pro.

I'll never concede that they were 'better' than me specifically unless we actually raced each other (we did sometimes) but I'll concede that their determination was rewarded, as it should be, with the successes they deserved.

Self belief is 90% of the battle.

It may seem like splitting hairs to you but it's interesting to me to see the double standards, hypocrisy and sycophant suck-up behavior that is prevalent in road racing and in society in general.
