It's not that bloody old Harvard that's been flying around is it? Didn't see it, but it sounded like a radial to me.

i'd say it was a Mustang. There is a Mustang that makes brief appearances every now and then. It flys into the Heathcote valley where I live at full noise and does a sweeping turn or two. FUCK it sounds awesome

    I vote it's a UFO

But you left out the UFO option.

You shouldn't even need to see the plane to tell what it was from those three options. There should be no way anyone could confuse the sound of a Harvard with that of a Spitfire.

About as similar as my SJ50 and the VFR.

Some Spitfires have squared off wing tips. Some have VERY pointed ones too.

It may have been a Tiger 955i, they sound awesome passing at speed too!

One has been seen and heard flying around here of late.

Fantastic machines, easily confused with the sound of powerful aircraft! Cheers (from dream world) John.

it's probably the harvard that romeo posted, they've been getting low on funds and need people to buy shares...

there's no longer any spits in the south island, there's one at ardmore in Auckland being worked on, and I don't think there's any stangs at the moment

If you're in ChCh, the Spit on the stand / plinth thing out by the airport has clipped wing ends.
