I am pleased that you have new gear. But in a round about way thanks for nothing.
Whilst that I realized that your purchasing power overseas is better, it does nothing to help the local bike shops. Who do you go to when you have issues with your new gear, certainly not the place in the States that you brought it from. You go to your local bike shop and expect them and the local supplier to rectify the problem for a product you didn’t even purchase in NZ.

This is happening more and more guys, as I see it on a weekly basis. But this does nothing to help the local bike shops that have a large investment in inventory to give the customer a good range of choice, of which is then only used as a sizing and problem solution to buy overseas at a cheaper price, hence harming our local economy.

You are the first ones to complain when your local bike shops don’t have what you want. This will become more and more if the locals don’t shop locally. One of the advantages to shopping locally at which ever shop that maybe, is the development of a relationship with your chosen shops staff, and you will find that if you support them, they will look after you.

But you guys and girls that shop overseas are the first to expect a discount or some other form of concession from the shops when you need something in a hurry that you can’t source from overseas. Where’s the fairness in that??? Especially to our loyal customers.

you are spectacularly full of assumptions.....and surprise surprise, they are all wrong

i have never gone to any bike shops when i have had issues with gear i have bought overseas....ever
i have never expected any retailer to front up with support for a product they didn't sell me....ever
i have never complained when a shop hasn't had something i was after....ever
and i have never expected "a discount or some other form of concession" when i need something in a hurry....ever

and just for the sake of throwing a few facts around:

the markup on products in NZ are OBSCENE - i can buy a items off ebay for HALF the price they are sold for here, literally HALF, in some cases even less

AGV helmet - $268 (which no-one sells in palmy anyway)
    NZ price - $549

I've seen alpinestars leathers you can land here for $800 and retailers in Auckland sell them for $1800.....

thats a pretty bloody ridiculous markup considering a retailer can buy these items for even less than joe public can!

are you really surprised we go and buy off shore when the discrepancy between prices is that huge?

and btw, i actually spent close to $2k on tyres, chain, sprockets, rotor, repairs, pack rack and other accessories at my local shop on my last bike, i wonder how much cheaper they would have been had I had the option of buying them in the states?

Sorry the gunners are shit too.As a pom you understand?

Hey yod ya hit a nerve there didn't ya?
As an aside was speaking to a manager of a retail shop which is getting in on the "voucher mate" website discount promotion, the mark up they usually have is w/s x1.95($100w/s ex gst to $195 retail inc gst)they say with the way people ask for cash discount and the various promotion discounts they are going to a flat w/s x2.1.

And not casting any doubt here when I was in clothing manufacturing years ago the margin from shirts we sold to say Hallensteins for $10.00 was retailing at $19.95,no gst then either.Ok account for freight etc.

Common theme today is what discount you give me,know of one firm giving 15% off for cash to a large company(300 employees) for all stock on the floor.Wasn't long ago Kattmandu were prosecuted for false declaration of sale goods saying 50%off,and all they did was mark everything up to take in the discount, can't blame the consumer for being dubious when they can buy offshore at great prices compared to here.

Most retialers should know their stock to realise goods bought offshore etc and returned faulty, not fitting etc,to politely tell customer to take it back.If customer says I bought it on ebay then they should be encouraged to buy local, tactfully.
Hello officer put it on my tab

I have no problem buying locally when the prices are reasonable, i bought all my last set of gear except the helmet in NZ.....but when i can see that buying the gear i'm after locally will cost me around $2200-$2300, and ordering similar stuff from the US will cost me $1200-1300....???

i dont have enough money to just throw away an extra thousand dollars when i dont have to (throwing suzukis down the road notwithstanding of course)

it's simply a matter of the changes to a free market as e-business takes its toll....

fisher and paykel have done it

ok.... timeout... fighters to your corners.

Start a new thread marked "Ahole eBay surfers" or "Vampiric NZ Retailers". This ones for Manawatu rides and doesn't need battle lines drawn through the middle of it as I can see starting to happen here. ZBoth parties have valid points and No party is going to win this one or find a solution any time soon.

Shake hands, Pauly - go back to sniffing 2 Stroke and helping me find some RVF USD forks. Johno - go back to looking for another tractor bike and realising your helmet was designed for fat head americans and yet it seems to fit you well...

    good point

I get a bit incensed when I appear to be accused of taking advantage of anyone or anything when that is most certainly not my intention - i'm just buying gear in the most economic manner I can, which I think is understandable

after re-reading Paul's post I'm guessing he's having a go at the state of affairs in general more than me specifically, so sorry if I fired back a bit harshly mate
