i've had a similar thing like this happen to me.

Was drilling post holes for a twenty metre retaining wall on my property, got about 3/4 of the way along, was drilling away and the borer went sideways and strait down. Pulled the borer out and stuck a torch in, couldn't really see the bottom. So out with a spade and opened it up, turned out to be about a metre deep, maybe 1.2 metre square. Couldn't find any signs of where the dirt was being flushed away so i decided to chuck some fill back in there. Thought sweet as, might be a trailer load of clay (bad calculation), and turned out chucking three and a half trailer loads of clay in there, all by wheel barrow. Lucky i was a fit bastard at the time.

I you fill it back up make sure you compact the f out of it, or it will sink again next winter

    Have fun

All done, checked out the drainage etc with the council and its not a stormwater etc so filled it up,with 12 ton of shingle, took the easy way out and got it delivered in a concrete mixer, put the chute out and let her go,will probably subside a bit but that will give me some room to put some topsoil down. The water had subsided enough this morning to see the concrete cap that had broken and fallen through.Managed to throw in a heap of crap that i had been meaning to take to the tip.

Hope you didn't turf the XS in there accidentally

Sure looks like a decent hole though

But it's just a pup compared to the ones we got up at Huntly in the mines when an old mine shaft would decide to collapse had one pretty much swallow a Cat 955 Pay-loader one night awesome sight to see the bucket of such a big machine sticking out a hole

Built a greenhouse (10m x 52m) back in the day. Last couple of holes drilled for the posts hit serious drainage metal! Seems we were drilling into an old septic field... That could have been real fun if we had not filled the holes with concrete just before the building inspector arrived

Back in the day when i grandfather was a govt arcitech and the were building National womens hospital they found a rather large whole (tunnel really) formed by the lava flows from one tree hill they had to build a retaining wall at each end to contain the fill and fill up the large hole so they could continue to build it.

take pictures if you do could organise a KB treasure hunt in your back yard

Or leave it there for generations to come with a plaque engraved with "It leaked & it seeped, so Mike buried the bastard deep"

Just get some silastic & put a light smear on either side of the gasket before you fit it back into place
