I dont know how true this is but I got told by a friend that speed cameras in a parked van on the side of the road can take photos from vehicles going in either direction, but I was always lead to believe that the only took photos of oncoming vehicles which would mean that if that was the case because motorbikes dont have front number plates that you would be safe. Is this right?.

Twice I been done by the van as I have been coming towards it...within the same week dammit! So NO if a van don't count on not getting a ticket

they take the picture out of the back door so if the van is on the other side of the road facing toward you as you go past it can snap you from the rear otherwise they can't see your number plate so pretty hard to know who you are.
If it's on the same side of the road as you with the rear door facing you, no chance of seeing your number plate. Unless of course there is some new type of camera that can take pics around corners, you never know of course, maybe like an Xray and it reads your plate from the tire side, a lead plate on the inside of ya number plate should stop that

Another thing to consider is they have to prove it was you riding the bike and not a friend as its pretty hard trying to identify someone when they are wearing a helmet or do they disregard that and try to fine the owner of the bike whoever was riding it at the time the photo was taken?.

I can tell you on good authority they don't give a shit who was riding it. The ticket still goes to the 'Registered owner' and they won't transfer it onto the 'actual' riders license record

The registered owner gets the letter. You have to prove you weren't at the controls. The onus is on you to to prove innocence...

Distinctive paint schemes can be used to help identify some vehicles... and their owners...

Just ask for a copy of the photo.

The ticket should go away then

providing they only got a shot of the front

Yes that makes sense even if it sounds a bit tough. A vehicle has broken the law, the registered owner is liable for the fine, the justice system has no interest or record of who actually pays. So the only record you have is owning a vehicle which committed an offence. Nothing to do with who was driving. No demerits involved.

Don't you have to declare these though - like for consideration of insurance etc
