Something similar happened to a buddy of mine; he employs four guys permanently and another few contractors whenever he needs them, keeping people in work. He was putting a beam in place under a house and took too much weight on his shoulder for a few seconds. Pop!

There was a long waiting list for surgery in the public system, so he opted to go private, get back to work asap etc. The op' was a total success, he's back at work, no drain on the system and all his ACC levies are up to date.

Will ACC reimburse him? Like fuck they will.

He would have been better off sitting on his arse for six months on ACC waiting for the op in the public system, milking it for another six while he went through re-hab and keeping his seven grand in his pocket.

Unfortunately, he's too honest for that.

Useless...how so...drink and drive, hit a tree, need a wheelchair...get paid 80% salary...home mods...$110,000 mobility vehicle for you to drive.

Not so useless and would not be covered by Health Insurance.

Medical Insurance has exclusions just like ACC.

Taxpayers money...how would you feel if someone got compensated for something that was not covered (not saying Wendy is not being unfairly treated)...

Many years ago my ex popped his fu fu valve digging some drainage metal. He went to the doc who could not reduce the hernia. Came home and sat out a night, then went back to the doc who managed to put things back where they belonged. Hindsight would have seen us go straight to hospital to get it fixed. Acc claim was made and initially declined as blokes do sometimes get these hernias, it is a birth defect. But this was a genuine injury so we argued the case. We won. Not only that but ACC paid for him to have his surgery in a private hospital (we did have insurance too I have to admit) but they picked up the majority of the cost, insurance the rest. All sorted.

I have just run out of free options for my hernia - ACC are well set up to turn them down.Hernias don't happen from a single event...even if they do - there is a 90% chance it was pre existing and the stain just made it much more noticeable. They are more sort of repetitive strain. So no ACC for me,no public health....I'll have to go private. Not a huge cost, but it still gets my goat that after a lifetime of payments I still haven't got a single penny from the Government.I still go to work every day,but popping a piece of your gut back in place 10 times a day is super gross and not what life should be.

And yet at the same time they seem quite happy to pay out for hearing aids - a repetitive strain injury that was caused back in the '70's.I don't care if I'm half deaf,I can get by not hearing what goes on around me,but living with a hernia limits what I can do...playing with my kids....and I can't ride off road anymore - big parts of the enjoyment of my life.

Now see that is NOT FAIR! I hear what you/they are saying about a pre-existing condition thing, but honest as I sit here typing I had never heard my ex complain before about anything that even hinted at his fu fu. I trained as a nurse and am somehow programmed to see and hear things that some dont admit to. This was a oncer, that broke through a genetic weakness. Maybe it would have gone over time, who knows, he was a young man when this happened, no history of it in the family. Maybe we were lucky to get a claim accepted.

Having a burst fu fu is NOT funny in any way shape or form. What is the waiting list for a repair in public system?

That's it - a pre existing weakness...so no claim. What you did do right is go to the doctor straight away - this is what ACC needs to get into action.I never go to a doctor,I only went to get a medical certificate for my license...and got him to confirm what I already knew.Too late,it had already happened.Public system is more a matter of funding, and in the present climate all funding is non existent. To get it done on the public system I will need to be on a stretcher with a strangulated hernia. It would cost the system less money to do it now.I'm getting close to not coping,it will have to be done soon.

Rotton sods every injury is a new injury if you were fully signed off as fit to work the assumption is that the previous one was fully resolved otherwise you can claim on the basis that the previous was not corrected so its a claim against the previous not being resolved I am no lawyer but I Say fight
