    Coz once you'd found it you'd stop thinking of places to look - if it wasn't in the last place you'd think to look then that place wouldn't be the last place you'd think to look....ouch....sore head.

    Pondered and postulated. It's because this is the penultimate putt. It arises because of a little known law of physics from a quantum fluctuation during Planck Time. I suspect that Schrodinger's cat influences the track of the golf ball.

    Yes, that was the origional theory, but in reality the answer is much simpler, and it is a mathematical answer. It is possible for a golfer to sink the penultimate putt, but it rarely happens.

    The number of putts required by any golfer to complete a game is given by the number n where n = f(hc). (remember Drive for show, Putt for dough).

    Thus the number of putts is predertimed. Every golfer tries to beat this formula, but none succeed. They all try to make the penultimate putt the final putt, but to be successful they would have to make the putt before the penultimate putt also be the penultimate putt, or:

    n - 2 = n - 1
    This simplifies to:
    -2 = -1
    adding 2 to BS gives
    0 = 1
    This is possible
    as 0 raised to any power = 0
    but
    n raised to the power of 0 = 1
    so if n = 0
    then 0 to the power of 0 = 0 and also = 1.

    Thus a golfer can sink the penultimate putt only when the total number of putts is n = 1, and he plays every hole without having to putt once.
    Time to ride

    ahh close.. but I see your problem

    in the step where you added 2 you should of infact multiplied by -1
    this gives you the following

    2 = 1

    subtracting one from each side gives you

    1 = 0

    while this looks the same, it is infact quite different

    1 putt = 0 putts

    so simply put, the putt never exsisted

    which is why you cant sink the penultimate putt

    quite obivious when you think about it really isnt it.
