To every man upon this earth
Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods
so like an astroid or meteor?

to make a boom loud enough to be heard as you guys describe, it's have to be something moving at over mach 2, as the sound wave compression at mach 1 to 2, although dense, unless coming from a very large mass, wouldn't cause the amount of noise that you have described.
the only aircraft capable of mach 1 in nz is the Hunter, and that's only in a dive.
an small asteroid or piece of space junk, travelling at 20 - 30 times the SOS though would certainly make a bang
Don't worry guys. Twas just my twosmoke back firing. I'm going to DAS after work so we shouldn't have a repeat.

Interesting...
Hope your ears are ok peeps down there *points down there*..
must've been a hell of a fright thats for sure
It was a loud boom alright. Building didn't shake as it would've in an earthquake but it did shake.
90% of the time spent writing this post was spent thinking of something witty to say. It may have been wasted.
