sorry - was being ironic ......... and mebbe a bit of a stirrer ....
'cause i don't believe that any gal anywhere is being totally honest if she says "oh it's fine if you don't do anything to mark my birthday [anniversary, or watever] as long as we go on sharing 'quality time' together ..."
what she's actually saying is that she can deal with it .... ie she's not going to go off in a silly snit or into meltdown about it or make a fuss or poison the mushrooms
oh sure, true, that is PART of the truth
but the REST of the truth, the usually unvoiced part is that we gals
[and i do believe ALL of us, no matter how unfussy or tomboyey we may be - sorry mr hitcher] ,
we get a little jolt of pure happiness when our man does something unexpected and thoughtful and just plain NICE for us...
really, the gift or gesture or whatever isn't the important thing here - ie not what pleases us most .... it could be a small brown paper bag of liquorice allsorts [if he knows that's what you like] or an impromptue beach picnic at sunset ........... it really doesn't matter to us .... because we love him anyway, right? [and its true that we'd be embarrassed if he made a big fuss] ............
it's just the fact that he's shown that he's aware of our birthday [or whatever] and has taken a little time to think about it and go out of his way and do something he thinks will please us ...... just to please us ...... [ie even if it doesn't get him bedded - although there's a distinct possibility it could...]
bugger - if i keep on like this i'll RUIN my reputation for being a hard case!!![]()
