No bullshit, that road was going to be sealed 40 years ago, so your 50 years won't be too far out.

Cool, look forward to meeting you. If you do decide to tackle the dirt, you'll find it fairly good, not too corrugated, and the pace will be slow.

It'll be a nice biker's road when sealed, that's for sure.

I'll make the decision on the day...we'll see how brave I feel.

(Funney how hot-rodders have 'runs' and motorbike types have 'rallies' eh?)

Got work tomorrow and then for NEXT weekend I'm on night-shift whereupon I drop into a zombie-like state......
So that explains the stars & Stripes at your place this weekend. And the three HP cars between Balclutha and Waihola today.

I still hope to be down on the bike next weekend. It was back to Kaka Point in the truck this morning then in to Dunedin and back home tonight. We'll be back down in Dunedin on Tuesday and Wednesday (I hate funerals) , so a bike ride next weekend may be a nice break.

I'm a yes - Waihola sounds good, but not by SH1. What's your devious route?

How about via Brighton and Taieri Mouth? The unsealed road over to Waihola is not too bad for street bikes (although we cruiser riders may need to stop and polish every two minutes....).

The Black Swan at Waihola does a nice Devonshire Tea, although coffee choice might be limited to Greggs or Bushells.
My devious route??? - OK if we're going to be deviants - there are 2 suggestions, the first of which you have already covered being the ride over form Taieri Mouth. Given what I ride and do on gravel I could have all the coffees lined up and cold by the time you lot get there!!!!! Soooo, because there is significant reluctance already here on the gravel ride, and, theres a few newer members who I suspect wouldn't go if there is any gravel there is devious route 2 -----

Basically we leave Dun via 3 mile Hill, out to Outram, then along the back road at the base of the Maungatuas, come out at on the flood free highway at the southern airport turnoff, go straight over SH1 to Henley, over the Taieri on the old Henley bridge and follow the hills around till we meet SH1 again at Titri, straight over SH1 again and round the old main road to Waihola. All of this is sealed but it is a lot more interesting (ie more corners and less traffic) than SH1.
My understanding is that the Waihola pub also does an OK coffee but to be honest I've never had one there - has anyone else????

I vote for devious route #1. And when I get to your place Bruce, where do I find the kettle, coffee etc. I'm sure I can have it all prepared for when you arrive.

So for the mentally-befuddled-and-too-lazy-to-read-all-the-thread types like me - when/what time is this run??

    waihola coffee

The pub does have drinkable coffee, plus nice biscuits and cakes, and a fantastic beer garden, sheltered and private. I'll be with you in spirit, have a great trip.

Well I have made it to Dunedin and my pillion (aka fiancee) and I are keen for the odd day trip.

So interested in anything coming up so will be keeping an eye on this thread to see what is happening.
I feel like I'm diagonally parked in a parallel universe.
