The price worked out at NZ$240 at my door. The freight charge was very reasonable for such a large box.

Laser cut, CNC folded, pressed mounting bosses, and powdercoated. I couldn't have built it for that.

Good luck with your project, but isn't CF a little bit bling for a KLR:)

A little bit????

I did write *briefly thought of cf". That thought lasted as long as it took me to search the price of the stuff. Now on the lookout for a few road signs.

Having a bit of a Dung-Out of stuff here and guess what I found......

A FULL SET of KAWASAKI GREEN 2006 KLR650 plastic panels

Back in 2006 when I purchased my first KLR650, The only colour available in NZ was GREEN with RED not going to be available until the following year

It turns out the USA gets their colours a year ahead of us, so I organised to import a full set of RED panels from the USA where it was their current colour scheme

The panels arrived before the bike, but if I recall correctly, I did actually run it in with the green panels still on to save drama at 500km 1st Warrantee check

Technically, one could argue that they aren't actually brand new, and to be fair, there are a few hairline marks on them, but otherwise BRAND NEW !

I just priced up a set of KLR 2006 GREEN panels at the local Kawasaki Dealer, and the replacement value is $2030.60 which interestingly is $280 MORE than RED ones )

That colour scheme had a Gloss Black tank, so to bling up your older KLR, just buy these, paint your tank black, and you're away laughing.........

Anyone interested before I put them on TardMe ?

Offers over $1000 ( Not selling for less than that, will just rebox, store in the attic and put back on bike if I ever sell it )

Offers to either stu@photographs.co.nz or 0274-342-372

Cheers, Stu

Help. Need to track down a replacement CDI for my project. Fitting a KLR600 into a NSR frame. Motor is mounted and ready to run - tried to get a spark and no go. I have tested the CDI as per the manual and the readings are not good. any help would be great. Cheers Brent

Hello All,

Are there other KLR riders in Auckland who want to get out for 1-tankful day rides? I am thinking of checking the road from Raglan to Kawhia (via Kauroa-Kawhia Road) this weekend. Anyone want to come along?

<Update. 2nd of June> Well, in the 3 weeks since I posted this, plenty have read my post but not a single response. (Maybe I should slink back to the Waikato riders' thread and see what adventures they have planned...) Granted, they are a little DR650-heavy, but they know how to party.

Hi All,
yesterday I came back from an awesome 4 week, 7500 km tour of the South Island, a dream trip including; Molesworth station, Rainbow Road, Dansys Pass, Old Dunstan Road, Nevis Trail, Skipper Canyon and a few other fantastic gravel rides, camping wild and living free off the back of my mildly farkled '08 KLR. No dramas other than a new rear tyre in Greymouth and a new chain in Christchurch, but all went great.

About 50km short of home, on the Southern near Manurewa, I hear a loud clicking noise, look down and see my left foot is covered in oil and the engine stopped pretty much immediately, I coast to the side of the motorway and watch the oil pour out of my poor wee girl :( pieces of engine casing on the ground........

Closer inspection shows a 3cm hole on the top of the engine case just behind where the cylinder meets the main engine body - see pics. AA to the rescue.

I am gutted about such a crap end to such an awesome adventure, she's booked into the shop for next week but looks pretty terminal to me....... anyone got a spare engine for an '08?

Hi all,
so I finally have the full story of what caused that hole in my engine and the death of my '08 KLR, it goes something like this.......

A 'dog' broke off one of the drive gears (I was told possibly 3rd gear) and rattled around the engine for some time damaging lots of stuff, it then got caught between the balancer weight and the crank case and forced through the casing (hence the hole), this caused most of the oil to be pumped out rapidly, this caused the exhaust cam to seize in the block which bent the valve rod which then damaged the piston and bore ....... all in all a pretty thorough destruction of the entire engine. Sorry no pictures.

I had dropped the bike earlier that day (pretty much just fell over at walking pace) which had damaged some plastics and knocked the handlebars a little crooked, so I put in an insurance claim for that damage and also said the engine blew up later that day and that it was up to the mechanic to determine if the two are related (was worth a shot I thought). The mechanic said it may have contributed but there was no way to prove either way. Took the insurance company nearly three months, and a few emails from me, but they finally decided to accept the engine damage and pay out for the whole bike, wohooo!!

In hindsight, I was told that me dropping the bike could have feasibly contributed to this breakage, I was in second gear and the drop onto the left side could have caused the bike to slam into third gear with the engine revving - this could have caused that dog to break off and rattle around until it killed the engine some 300km's later. Far from proven but a possibility none-the-less.

Interesting thing is I that I never noticed anything until the engine failed completely, I thought I would have felt a loss of power or at least heard the noise of the engine case failing but I never noticed anything - although I did have ear buds in and music playing. Given I was returning home from a 7500km 4 week adventure ride around NZ I was pretty much "in-tune" with that bike. I have since found another example of such a failure which, luckily for the owner, did not end as catastrophically as mine, see here;

http://www.klr650.net/forums/showthread.php?t=65712

Call me a sucker for punishment, but as soon as the cheque from the insurance clears I'm getting a 2013 KLR I like the new black stealthy look and given the oil burning issue seems to be sorted (my '08 was a burner) and I can bolt most of my farkles back on, seems a good way to go.

Good on you for the win, though, and glad that you're keeping the faith!

nope, sorry Pete, she doesn't belong to me anymore :)

I guess the insurance company will sell it at auction and someone will part it out or try and fix it, the plastics were in pretty rough shape anyway.

Hey guys, just muckin around with the bike today and decided to pull the screen out of the airbox. Ass of a job so decided to take the airbox out to do it proper like. Anyway, long story/short my exhaust has melted quite a large hole in the airbox downstream from the filter. And upstream, quite nasty really. Fixed now, but just a heads up as I thought mine was fine until the airbox came off.

Minimal by the looks of it. Pretty clean in there.

Had to remove my rear subframe to get the airbox out and there is a big crack in it (subframe). Dunno how that could have happened. Its ok for now, but on the offchance, has anyone got one they don't want? longshot I know.

Why do these things always come to light at the beginning of summer?

They are good mods and well worth it, but 10% is a bit optimistic I reckon. They won't do a thing for the top end rather just increase the mid range making the engine even more tractorlike and very forgiving.

pete376403
23rd November 2014, 10:29
Agreed. The exhaust cam advance is probably the most effective. I haven't touched the carb on mine, just removed the airbox snorkel and put on a GXSR muffler. (that's a genuine 2.5 kg weight saving alone).

been reading up and I think to get the full gain you need to add the KLX needle kit from Mike plus open up the air box, he has seen 7- 10% with these mods on the dyno (I think 7 on Gen1 and 10 on Gen2 ?)

IME you tend to get bored eventually whatever you own, answer to that is own 10 or so bikes and rotate them (or so I'm told )

Yes screen works well with these mods and is better than the KTMADV one now, bike is more comfortable also especially with the NE seat and Suspension mods, so far I'm finding this version of the KLR a great allround bike and think it will be ok for some long haul stuff as well once we get the 16T sprocket and and perhaps steal the KTM top box :woohoo:

I'm guessing your not super tall, For me KLR is a light wieght compared to the 950 and I hardly notice its weight at all offroad by comparison

Ridden a few boxers though and will agree they carry their weight very low combine with a low seat height that would be an ideal combination for offroad :sunny:

Not what 10BK is using but I've got an Oxford tank bag, expandable, can double as a backpack (has the straps but I've never tried it), pretty cheap but well made and mostly waterproof, even without the included rain cover. It doesn't work as a tank bag because the KLR has a pretty humpy shaped tank.

Good call, I just ordered their "OXFORD 1ST TIME EXPANDER", it's got great reviews on Amazon, plus it's on special... Looks perfect for what I want, cheers for the info!

What are those hand guards in the pic? I need to get some, looking at the barkbuster "storm", just not sure which fitting kit to order.

A KLR or maybe a DR... but the DR seems to get less
km per tank...
XT660R would be nice but they want silly $ for them

pterry sure i was getting 280-300kms out of a tank. Maybe more if i wasn't riding with Jatz & woodman. If you keep it in brissy I would hire it off you for a few days every year.:shifty:

The tank is just over 22 litres and they do around 50 MPG... bit of maths to do there :)

KLRs are quite thirsty. The best i could get was 18km per litre, but usually less. Pretty sure I saw 400kms once when I had the original tank on. Was a boring ride though. Had to keep it under 5000rpm to limit oil usage.

That bike looks good, and a better and cheaper option than sending a bike over. Food for thought.

US Gallons... which works out to about 290 miles or 460 km's... which sounds very generous.

Woodman is probably closer to the money... I've only done 1,000KM on my KLR so far, so not too sure. I filled the tank up before a 300KM trip 2 weeks ago, and I'm still buzzing around town on the same tank.... I think 400KM's is doable.

Certain years have the oil burn issue, not sure which ones.

This Guy has managed to get 400KM's on a few occasions >>> http://www.klrclan.co.za/stories/12/15-klr-650-fuel-economy

It's a 2007 KLR, but I'm pretty sure the guts of the bike haven't changed since the 80's!

First of the Gen IIs (08 -09) were/are the oil burners. Looking at part numbers, the piston and rings have been through several changes. I'm tossing up between getting a stock 2014 piston and rings or spending the extra and going 685 or 688. (688 would be preferred, close enough to call it a 690 and give the orange riders fits)

They are barkbusters, I got them with the (secondhand) Renthal fatbars. I had to make some pieces to go between the inner bar mount and the guard bar so they are not ideal, but still saved the levers numerous times on the DB1K.

If you are travelling about 375-400km to reserve, (18L) with 4L left after that, I average 325-350km when doing my Murawai beach/road loop, have got down to 285km but was with a near full throttle up and down the beach run <a href="http://s603.photobucket.com/user/800rider/media/20150626_105844_zpswmwioasz.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt119/800rider/20150626_105844_zpswmwioasz.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20150626_105844_zpswmwioasz.jpg"/></a>

Yer that would be true, not burning a drop of Oil at 14k and has sustained full throttle on the beach for up to 20km at a time without the temp gauge moving over 1/4 :Punk:

Hey Pete - just a quick note to say those pannier racks are still going strong as pannier racks and also great crash bars when the panniers are off.

Aiming to do another South Island tour this summer.....
