View Full Version : Greymouth Street Race 20th Anniversary

Well Guys, that time of year again and things are in full swing, plans are under way for a very special Anniversary weekend. The entry will go out late next month to those on the email and postal list and of course the MNZ website. As per last year i will keep people up to date and answer all the questions i can for you.
The big plus for us this year is that funding has been approved for TV coverage like we had in 2007. A very different prize giving is planned with some commemorative touches for those that have supported the event as riders and set up crews over the last 20 years so it should be a cracker weekend. More info will be posted as it comes to hand.
NEW WEBSITE!!!!
We have a new dedicated website which will eventually have information, galleries, history and the entry form on it. Its still in its early stages so if you can think of anything we should add to it then just let me know. A very special thanks to the visordown.co.nz crew for their support and for making it happen.

RIDERS
We cant emphasise enough the fact that we are only allowed to run a maximum of 35 bikes per class. This is delt with on a first in first served basis as always. last year a few of the classes were full within 3 weeks of the entry release so just because your entry is on time doesn't ensure you a place on the grid. Every attempt will be made to try and slot riders into other eligible classes.
MOTARDS - As per MNZ rules we cannot run motards at our event in road race classes. We intend on running S1 and S2 as two separate classes but if our total motard entry numbers are less than 35 then they will be combined. The ideal situation is to have decent fields in both classes.
cheers, steve

Speaking of pics. Our club secretary, Peter Toal is looking for some photos of the street race. especially ones from late 80's early 90's. He has started a Facebook Group for people to add pics so if you have some good ones from the early days or some good pics of significants then logon to facebook and post them on there for him. He plans to have a slideshow set up at prizegiving. A few of the characters in the pits would be good, showing the human element as well as the machines. Pete has already put a few up, its interesting how little in the way of safety fences there was back in the day.

Good news, after 3 months of waiting it looks like we finally have a permit number from MNZ, its verbal at this stage, just waiting on written confirmation then the entry and advertising can start. No posters or advertising is allowed without displaying the permit number. we got a slap on the hand a few years back.

Ok.. you dont get what I mean... the old shitters 'were' the bikes that used to race the streets as there were no tracks around back then (even before you) yes then those old shitters were 'new' they grew up on street circuts the GSXR didnt.

Would rather sponcer a class or race cheers. Sponcering riders is a huge drain on the business for very little result in terms of payback. Where sponcering a race or class gets my name mentioned often on the PA system and tv (if there is any) coverage. Having said that i do sponcer a couple of local guys for the King of Ruapuna series andthe nationals.
I only put so much effort towards the racing it because i love it.

The first year I did this with my Ducati I almost got hit by a rapidly sliding/spinning Kawasaki 400 while braking for turn one. He had fallen off as soon as he touched the brakes so his bike was travelling considerably faster than I was as it came past. Bit scary that...
The next time I did it on my Ducati, Hemans big bore Harley Soft Tail 1580went down next to me while braking for turn one. 315 odd kg of Harley spining right next to me. Bit scary that...
Year 1: around 160kg of Kawasaki 400, 2.035m long
Year 2: around 315kg of Harley 1580, 2.4m long
Year 3??? By Extrapolation, I should be nearly taken out by a 6240cc motorcycle weighing around 630kg and around 2.8m long. Any Boss Hoss' entered this year? Third time unlucky? :baby:I think I'll stay home:laugh:
Actually thats not why I'm staying home this year. I just can't make it work this time, but good luck to all those that are going. If your thinking of racing or spectating, DO IT, its a bloody good event.

it will change for each race. so if you come from last to first in race 1 then you will be on pole for race 2.
its just a way of seeding the grid for faster riders for the first round. once we know the fastest 9 riders from race one then they will get promoted to top 9 for race 2. and the top 9 from race 2 will line up for race 3.
hope that makes scence?

maybe, depends on the numbers come saturday. There is an equation that go's something like this:
if the number of buckets plus number of classics equals less than 35 then they will be combined.
if the number of buckets and classics exceed 35 then they will be split!!

Hey Steve, if the classes get combined, please look at running the buckets off the front with a spilt start.
Three years ago it was the other way around and was pretty dangerous with the bucket corner speed being higher we ended up pushing past priceless classics in our usual aggressive way. Buckets off the front will mean only the fastest classic may catch the slower guys and would be passing on the straights.......just a thought!

Note the 39 post classics, we are over subscribed by 4 so we will be requesting mnz/steward authority to run with the 4 extra. In the interim, if anyone needs to pull out then let us know. we got an ok last year to run 37 but only 34 turned up on the day anyway.

you want to talk to a greymouth old timer - try Russel bleech or Ian mcgreggor, those silly buggers have raced each and every Greymouth street race since race 1 in 1989. There are a shit load more that have only missed 1 or 2 as well.

missed 2 while in the uk, could have had 15 up my sleeve come labour weekend but there are plenty more to come i hope!!
Would love to put the slow posties with classics but we are not psychic and who would make the call on who is slow or fast? You can piss a lot of people off real quick by judging their riding ability.
We would have a real can of worms opening it up to pre89 as well. We will need a lot of feedback from you postie boys next year if we are to review our classic / post classic classes. at least 30% of our bikes would be elligeable for pre89, most of those bikes have 3 classes to race in already so we left it as is.

Classic = 14
Buckets = 30 so with a toatle of 44, how will the grid be sorted?

Buddha has the best idea
Buckets should have their own class with the numbers they have
steve74
10th October 2009, 21:39
maybe, depends on the numbers come saturday. There is an equation that go's something like this:
if the number of buckets plus number of classics equals less than 35 then they will be combined.
if the number of buckets and classics exceed 35 then they will be split!!
jeez you boys are slow??:spanking:
***Classics and buckets will each have their own class***
I guess the word split must have confused ya.
so 2009 will be exactly the same format as 2008

I'm sure if you asked posty riders at sign if they wanted to run with the classics you would get enough to move classes to eliminate the issues you have, then the steward wont need to make the call?

Im real hesitant to publish this on the forum, hopefully im not leaving myself open to a barrage of criticism. Based on last years results we will seed the first 2 rows. We only recorded top 10 in each race. Some may not like it but we said on the entry this is how it would be done and unless there is a major concern then it looks like this:
last years top 10 riders Tom bos, j buchannan, s.evans, T. blanchet, R Antonovich have not entered Buckets this year

K14 - yup, first up best dressed, you should all know whos fastest. or i could leave it up to the bucket club to decide. I dont care either way as long as those from last year get on the grid. last year was just so much safer and quicker to start the races with a grid draw. we will only do the first 2 rows (9). It will change after each round and be posted by the pit exit like last year. If ya worth ya salt then you will be on row 1 for race 2.:niceone:

It has a habit of bucketing down untill 6am on sunday morning, staying fine all day the pissing down as the crews pack up.
LOSTINFLYS - Did you find some accomodation? room on my lawn for a tent if ya get stuck, or my garage.

I like the look of that!!!
when i say 35% accurate, i mean for a wet forecast.
If they say its going to be good then they are generally spot on.
If they say its going to rain then is about 35% accurate and is more often a sunny day. Im sure its some sort of conspiracy? I have sat here on many occasion with the BBQ cranked, a beer in my hand and a sunburned face only to find jim hickey on tv telling the rest of the country it was pissing down today on the west coast.
The west coast stretches the same distance from auckland to wellington, imagine giving wellingtons forecast for auckland. rant rant rant, off topic again:lol:

Did any one find, after the last kart race, a kart rear bumper with number plate (47) on it, some over exuberant Rotax driver gave me a punt and snapped it off. It is a chrome bar which will have a broken piece of aliminum inside each end. Would most appreciate its return and I'll fix you up for the postage.

Spun up on the painted stop sign on the road and then became an astronaut. You would think after all these years i would know better:o.

Yowling, for his last minute mechanics which got the bike running, and for the fuel mix I didnt have cos I really didnt think I'd be racing that bike (will sort you out for that)
RDjase, for stripping the entire electrics from his bike and mailing them down, the stator was the issue.
One last thanks to Mrs DC and girls for taking care of our sprog while we raced.
Brilliant day, sun burnt to prove it, an exceptionally well run meeting which had me on the 2nd row all day. Great riding by Kevin Orr and James Hoogie. and I'd have to say that the last bucket race will most likely be the only time I will ever beat ALL 3 HOOGIES.

haha, rule number one - dont run over the Greymouth club captain!!
Scary photos now that i see them, Im the first one to admit i was trying way too hard too early, was pretty irresponsible realy. Im not sure that i want to see the tv coverage looking at that?? When i got back from hospital the chain was twisted sitting beside the bike, I was wondering if maybe the chain had popped and wraped around the back wheel? i was told that they "removed the chain to move it"? it wasnt seized? looking at the pic maybe the chain did come off? im sure i just f***ed up.
im more concerned about the young kid swinging on the pole?:shit:

That's F3 isnt it? Why is that #47 not in motards?
Agreed there is an argument there. its a ktm duke, not designed to do big jumps. to qualify for motard the manufacturer must make an off road version of that bike. Some would also argue that they do. Scottie on 47 is an experienced veteran of the grey street race (11yrs) and was happy to have a play from the rear of the grid. its a big single so the motor is ok for f3. He runs it in f3 at club level and bears meets, for us at greymouth we cant run motards in formula classes. Its the handlebar height that is the iffy bit. We can argue that there shouldnt be 80s trail bikes in post classic too but you have to draw the line between formula bikes and motard somewhere i guess.

Why not? because of the handlebar height?
While on the post classic topic, I thought pre89 wasn't going to be run? either that or a few ineligible bikes snuck in

haha, very funny!!.
agreed mate, its hard to police the bikes, we rely on the competitor being honest on their entry with regards to the year of manufacture. Its hard for the scrutineers to pick up modifications or differences between say an 82/83 machine, its more a safety check at sign in rather than an eligibility check. Often its only the competitors that know and understand the actual year of the machine. We do try but a few obviously slip through the net. Its not a championship so we dont get too wound up about it but fair call.
I know Dan mckenzie snuck out in postie practice on his 89 nsr and got a slap on the hand for it.

That was all somthing, what a realy loved, was walking the km or so back to the motel, and inhaling the glorious coal burning smell, nothing like the Coast, the fresh air and all that comes with it.
I am all but screwed now. The wife now says we MUST be in Greymouth every year for this event. I am truely having trouble coming up with an arguement against her:shutup:.
Buckets were great, nice to be in front of a few of the FXR's that at Ruapuna would be slipping away into the distance.
The RD in Pre 82, decided it did not want to race, dummy grid for practice and the clutch cable broke. Inbetween then and race two, the true spirit of racers came to the resucue, all sorted with spare parts to be road ready again.
Had a great tine on the RD, though did better than last year, I expected more from myself. The 3rd race at turn 3 a fella got a little outa shape, and I ended up nudging he's back wheel, gave me the shits a little that did.
All in all, Loved it.
Thanks to all, as all have said for makin' it happen.

haha, a lot of effort was put into trying to avoid back to back races. bucket racers tend to not ride motards but im sure your an exception to most rules Mr buddha. the thing IMO is tho the riding style the postie motos generaly use road bikes lines... and note that the GS1000 had wide trail bars, dont think hed wana end up in motards :pinch:

Morning guys, geez im stiff this morning.
Just a quick note, you guys see me in and around other bike events and im the committee member that deals with the riders and classes. The real success of our event is mostly due to the efforts of one lady - Debbie Collings. If anyone needs to be congratulated its debbie. Shes up at 3am and is in bed by 7pm so misses the prize giving. She recieves no clap of hands and little personal thanks. Without Debbie there would be no grey street race. so if you get the chance send her a little email thanking her and the rest of our team.

Thanks heaps for a fun well run event.
Amazed at how sensible the riders were at Greymouth especially the Motards and Post Classic boys who are notorious at some other events, some places the ambulance appears to be a shuttlebus that runs after every Motard round. I can tell you there are 4 first timers from Dunedin (Motards) that now have a regular event to put in the diary. Noted also was how the riders helped eachother out re parts, breakdowns etc.
A good bunch all round!
Thank you thank you thank you....

He was all good, just a bit dizzy, he got back just as round 3 was starting and collected his bike. He was at prize giving too. a few scrapes thats all.

Would you believe that that photo almost spans the entire width of the newspaper with the big headline "blind eye" to booze ban.
not "street race great success" or " Sun shines on motorcycle racers"
Blind eye to booze ban?? Just shows what we are up against on the coast, our newspaper is the soul destroyer of our community. If there is a little bit of negativity to be found they will find it. The article go's on to say how the organizers and police ignored the town centre booze ban as people were drinking on footpaths outside the pubs in a sensible manner. It then went on to talk about the big presence of the satins slaves motorcycle gang? I dont remember seeing them??

Are they moaning that fact folks were drinking sensibly, there was no trouble, and a they were unobservant and did not notice there were 3 distinct patch's that would be considered to be gangs, I personally saw Satans Slaves, Epitaph riders, (which had me surprised as I thought they had patched over to Devils Henchmen) and a I think the Lost Breed patch, they were all together, seemed friendly enough when a couple of drunks started talking to them in the bar and were generally well behaved, where is the problem. Oh of course there were the other patch's you know Ulysses, Plains MC, Waimate MC, and those really dodgy shirts I saw with Kiwibiker all over them.
Meh what wallys, someone who lives in the area should write to the editor and point out what they missed, and ask what trouble there was in town related to the event, bloody none I bet, in fact I would go as far as to say aside from a few idiots in clapped out pieces of shit cars I saw (that would have to have been local) it was a well organised, well behaved event. Hell really not unlike most motorcycle rallies.

Spot on mate!! the quote from police was "They can be arrested immediately but in an event like the street races officers have the discretion to warn them first" "police were happy with the behaviour and had there been any problems the liquor ban would have been enforced in full" "A blind eye was turned because it was such a great crowd".
I cant believe it was the major story of the weekend?? they seem to have missed the point. The article eventually mentions how the town pubs and hotels were very happy with their weekend takings and was actually positive. but the headline just sucked!!.
at least they got the picture right - buckets. Normally they fuck it right up.

good on ya mate.
Im not 100% sure how much the paper make or donate from our streetrace. - they do print our programme and do an editorial leading up to the event so im not in a position to approach them and its not my job as club captain to do so. but it is disappointing from a personal point for sure. my opinion on this is my own and not the opinion of the committee. Ive had issues with the inaccurate reporting without apology of our newspaper for a long time.

Fantastic pics. We pit with Hayden(Scorry) and are also in Motard Class Scott 242, Mark 714 and Gary 78. Do you put your pics up on site anywhere? If you have pics but dont want to put them up here my email is gary.burrows@otagomotorcycleclub.org.nz . Would really appreciate some thanks!

Spot on mate!! ...I cant believe it was the major story of the weekend?? they seem to have missed the point. The article eventually mentions how the town pubs and hotels were very happy with their weekend takings and was actually positive. but the headline just sucked!!.
.
Headline should have been-
"Bloody Fantastic Weekend Had By All"
Bet the locals are pissed off at the negative headline. Congrats to the whole team of organisers and Greymouth locals we saw on the street setting up at 5.30 and cleaning up afterwards not to mention all the hard stuff running it. It was a great vibe in the pits with riders, spectators, officials, local community and police all with the right attitude.

Did you get any from the karts, number 47? Cheers
PS I'm still looking for my rear bumper that was knocked off, if any one knows of its whereabouts?
Sorry didn't get any of kart #47 but I see a nice one has been posted. (Saw someone clearing your bumper bar off the track outside Speights opposite the Toyota dealer - don't know what they did with it)

I don't have many of buckets. You can find one of 42 and three of 29 in the set "Greymouth rider requests" on www.flickr.com/photos/geckoracing/sets but they are not the greatest pics

1st of all I'd like to thank a couple of people for making it possible for me to race the LC in posties.
Glad to help out D . Great you got the bike sorted with 10 minutes to spare :2thumbsup

Hey marty
No mate, been to the doc, cant do sweet FA with it untill the bone heals. lots of bruising on my chest. Doctor concerned about soft tissue damage. The bone feels good, i can feel where its fused together but my trapezius muscle feels like someone is stabbing me from the inside out whenever i try lift it. x-rays again on the 22nov, one month from crash. Im lucky i just broke my collarbone, have you seen the video on you tube.

Just a quick update for those interested. We had our post race debrief last week and the committee were exceptionally happy with the event this year. we have addressed the issues on ambulance/fire on the circuit too soon, the odd flag marshal indiscretion and spectator access. All and all it was a great success. If anyone has any Constructive criticisms then dont be afraid to let me know. Rider and spectator input helps improve our event.
For the first time since 2005 we charged an entry fee. So we actually made a profit!!!! Once we pay all our flag marshals, set up crews and general accounts etc we intend reinvesting some money on our track safety. safety of riders and spectators is a high priority. We have also arranged for quotes for 40ft containers to use as walk overs to get people to and from the inner and outer circuit quicker, It will get rid of the time spent opening gate crossings and ultimately increase the number of laps for riders.
again, any constructive criticism - Steven_hyde74@hotmail.com
(*note underscore after steven, not a space)
I will table them at the next committee meeting
cheers, steve

Only improvement I would make is give the buckets twice as many races and let them use the motard section every second race!

oh come on kirk, its hard enough rolling the dirt section in-between races let alone running a rake through it to remove stuck buckets:clap:
