Dropped a few more (maybe 40 or so) flyers today @ the downtown parking building - was good to see a few BRONZ Bikeoi flyers had already been dropped on some of the bikes there too.
all told including where I've handed a stack out, I've proably released about 250 or so flyers into the wild for Saturday (and no bike who stops next to me @ lights is safe from one either - lol)

Has anyone got a PA system that we could use at the museum please? For obvious reasons I cant bring one down, but can probably arrange for it to be picked up for me and delivered to the museum. No point in having speakers and not having the means to have them heard really :sunny:
Failing that we will hire one for the event. Thanks in advance.

Ixion may remember the loudhailer he hired for the cheesecutter ride... Don't know if that is what you are after?
Be aware, ours came in a wooden box, which can't be carried in a givi box, so we took it out of the box and put it in a pannier

Yeah, well, that is the obvious reason I cant cart one, but smarty pants suggested we would need power anyway so that is that out the window :pinch: Guess we will just have to project our voices, I am off to practise  Maha has his ear muffs on :D

Anyone know any other bike parking areas round akl CBD?... done the civic, skycity, vic street, downtown, britomart lots plus all the student area down Symonds street (though it was late in the day - might drop some more off lunchtimish tomorrow)
Still got 'bout a hundy or so to flyers left to distribute.
Shame there's so many 50cc scooters that won't be able 2 participate - though I have become a pro at attaching rolled up flyers to the shopping bag hooks on the scoots :scooter:

We sure are, the route is posted and wont change.
If anyone is planning on joining this ride once it is underway please make sure you approach the tail on the lane inside to where we are travelling and draw up along side the TEC's so they know you are there. Indicate you want to join in and WAIT for them to fall back and make room for you to slot in at the rear of the ride. Under no circumstances should you simply attempt to butt in! The formation will be established at the start and there is no room for people to push in.

This will be covered off at the rider briefing, but anyone who joins along the way and has to leave the ride, please stay towards the back of the group and make sure you signal the TECs that you aren't in trouble and don't need assistance. (i.e. leave the convoy and a thumbs up and give an "I'm leaving" sign - probably pointing away from the convoy)

I was also towards the back. I'm new to big rides but I believe a big issue was cars in the line plus the concrete truck with half a dozen tag-on cages on the Southern didn't help either. A ute from Ullrich Aluminium (IIRC) was pretty pushy, but I'll be buggered if I managed to remember his plate.
Speaking to someone on a CS650 at the end, he thought we needed more chasers and traffic control or similar, which maybe would have helped those of us towards the back...? He had been putting in the effort.
Could I have done more to help? To be honest on my first big ride I wasn't comfortable trying to do that sort of job. Maybe next time if it seems appropriate.
The main thing is that it was a success with no incidents and a good turnout. Well done and thanks to the organisers.
I have to work Tuesday so won't make the Bikoi. But I'm sticking with this campaign and Jonathan Coleman will be getting a visit next up.

What sort of numbers?
380 counted out the gate at the BP Autobahn, then numbers grew as we picked up riders at the various ends of teh motorway. A great day for it not too hot nor too cold.
Everyone got their riding sussed pretty quickly and we got to our ultimate destination completely intact.
Speakers were all exceptional(yes Mom) even you,LOL, seriously your points were 100%on the money, well done guys and girls.
Was good to hear Phil Goff say if this change did come about he/labour "would" repeal it!
Worth noting too that this and other regional rides are considered to be pat of the build up to Tuesdays Main Event ride and that that is to be considered the start of the Bikers campaign, not the end!
I couldn't agree more National need to know that if they allow this proposal to become law they're finished.250,000 + riders and others alone could wipe out their entire majority and make absolutely sure of Act being wiped from the face of Parliament.
This is what will happen, no one is stopping their vigil after Tuesday's ride.

It was a great sight, It took just under 10 minutes from the leaders till TEC went past me. A rough count from the photos shows around 300 bikes. (Edit. I count 331 bikes)
I will upload the rest of the photos to a photo server tonight and post the link.

I think it was to fast we kept getting broken up so the cars could pull out into lane Amongst us. Was a good learning curve for the next one or the Bikoi ride though. Needed to be 60-70K or so we rode as a pack. Much better nearer the end when the traffic slowed us to one big group! Just comments though not complaints.
Still much better turn out than I expected and everyone road really sensibly!
I just hope Phil Goeff puts his money where his mouth is LOL!!

Most credit to
The three riders at the front who dealed with traffic mangement Maha, Kiwi Graham and cant exactly remember name but rode a black hornet 919. Ixion and Mom for dealing with media, phill goff and the new green mp and Big Dave for arranging camera set ups etc for kiwirider. Scary bikers sewing circles produing quality products.

Much better nearer the end when the traffic slowed us to one big group!
It wasn;t one big group: that concrete truck and lots of cars were between the big group and a load more further back. That and some unfamiliarity may have contributed to some confusion at the Wellesley Street off ramp...
I 100% agree though. I have no complaints at all, only thanks and congratulations for the organisers and everyone who made the effort

Well, that went off well! What a fantastic team effort. The official count of bikes from the Police traffic cameras the first time we went under one was 321. I counted 35 at the museum before the main bunch arrived, but honestly by then things got really busy and I was not in a counting kind of mood :D I know more riders hooked up with the ride so lets say in excess of 350.
Lets be watching TV one news today, they covered the whole thing, including taking film of the big ride going under the Market Road over bridge. National radio were covering the event as well, so it have been getting on the hour news bulletin coverage as well.

That was exceptional, to everyone involved and to those who turned and made this ride successful, thank you. For a first time effort at this kind of thing from a few of us, I can honestly say that it was a pleasure to put together. Im sure the crowd at the end was bigger than the start? Must have picked a few along the way. Thanks to Gremlin for getting us the Motorway at Wellesley st, a bit of traffic control at the set of lights was put in place to ensure all (I hope) bikes got around without stopping./

The crashes are bad news in all senses. Commiserations to those on the wrong end of them, whatever the circumstances.
Here's one way of looking at it: 360 bikes did average 150km (?) each = 54,000km in heavy traffic. There were two incidents or one per 27,000km. Anyone know what the average biker crash rate is? Probably more frequent than that.
BUt a count of none at the Bikoi and the way home would be primo.

Quite right, I meant he's ok, as in not going to die/mashed up/through windscreen etc.
Sorry we probably have very different opinions on what is a serious crash. However we won't let that overwhelm how well the rest of the day went!

Sorry to be the bastard in the pack but x2 down? Worst possible outcome.
Not pushing the blame and pray the people hurt have a swift recovery.
Waiting to see if we get hammered on the news, all it will take is footage of an ambulance and a voice over.
I also have to say it got pretty hairy sometimes at the back. Some people obviously interpreted "staggered rideing , no overtaking" as "go for your life mate". At some points, both on the out and in ride we were moving at pace with people in two lanes and cars and trucks moving between groups. Those of us trying to stay in a group and follow the speed limit had to ride alone for long periods, to catch the large groups would have been too dangerous.
If you were the guy on the BMW attempting to clear a path near the back, good on yer, sterling work mate. That white panel van you politely funneled into the left lane just was not watching what was happening.
Anyway, as i said, not bagging anyone, great turn out, get well soon. ACC wont see that the downed riders had clocked off though...

Yep, a small swarm went buzzing past from lane to lane on the Southern at one point after the turn around at Karaka (can't remeber where), but what I mainly saw was sensible people riding carefully and safely, and I was close to the back, too.
One query I do have is this:
If there is a gap in the staggered formation (say a rider pulls out for gas or things go awry at a roundabout - I saw both happen) should those in line behind the gap advance their position (breaking the no overtaking rule) to occupy the gap and make a tidy staggered formation again? Or is the gap just left?
I saw a few cars pull into such gaps and break up the line today.
kave
14th November 2009, 16:59
Definitely advance your position if safe to do so. Try to avoid switching from left to right, all that does is move the problem back.

I damn well hope not, or I'd be averaging a crash a year. Try the Southern cross as a way of calculating averages: 100 bikes each riding 6000 km and an average of 3 prangs per event. That gives an average of one prang per 200,000 km.

I suspect you and all the Southern Cross participants crash a lot less frequently than average, and I don't just mean on the event. You're an experienced bunch of riders and I doubt you get many people on Learner and Restricted licenses on big stuff like that. The 250 riders are the top crashers, eh? Some of them are probably well under 5000km between accidents.
But fark yeh, the media muck rakers will be loving the crashes AFTER the ride today. Are they making it clear it was not part of the ride? Thought so.

Full credit to them all. Some of us have put an enormous amount of time and effort into planning and executing this ride today.
For one person to not be able to control the "wrist twist" down a very narrow, winding road, speed signed 30kph I might add, on cold tyres AFTER the event is over and end up in an ambo on his way to hospital is inexcusable! As a result he has potentially undermined all the friggen work that went into making this thing so good, AND damaged our protest in the process. How the hell do I stand up now and shout out how unfair this is!

Miss Mully took a whole lot of photos on the North Western from an overbridge, so I'll post them up later.
For one person to not be able to control the "wrist twist" down a very narrow, winding road, speed signed 30kph I might add, on cold tyres AFTER the event is over and end up in an ambo on his way to hospital is inexcusable! As a result he has potentially undermined all the friggen work that went into making this thing so good, AND damaged our protest in the protest. How the hell do I stand up now and shout out how unfair this is!
You're a wise woman, "Annie". I had much the same thought after unleashing a string of expletives fit to make a longshoreman blush. Particularly on that road, which is usually full of traffic and covered in leaves.
Thats correct Doug, you cant blame a Stockcar Meeting if a knob crashes his car on the way home.
That's true in theory, Maha, but the reality is that perception is fact in these cases, and this hasn't assisted the perception of bikers.

HHmm might have heard that prang. I thought that it was 2 cagers that did a nose to tail but it must have been the bike hitting the car. It explains now why the riders behind me disappeared. If it was then that is the corner that really tightens up on itself and descends relatively steeply thru the bend. I can't excuse what he did but I can see how it might have happened.
Thanks to Maha, Mully, Mom and others for a well run protest. Looking at some of the weird actions by some of the cars, trucks and even caravans I was surprised that there was not more incidents.
I must be out of condition....my arse and wrists are still numb or achy.

LOL Cheers Maha, tell "Annie" I've not yet had a reply to my first post re the ride today.
Well done also to all of the guys and girls who rode ahead and stopped traffic at roundabouts and traffic lights.
Just me or did our Police seem to be quite relaxed about us doing this?
Yep there were a few silly cagers but in all they seemed genuinely polite and accomodating on the motorways.:scooter::rockon:

Big ups to all the Auckland Riders!
Ok, the ride itself was not 100% perfect, but hey — we're humans after all. I think in the main, we did pretty damn well today. Take it as practice for the next one.
To Maha: Well done mate. You stepped up to the plate and organised a very effective protest ride.
To Mom: That was a brilliant speech you made! Awesome!
To Ixion: You are developing into quite the canny statesman.
To the organisers behind the scenes: we appreciate all the work, effort and time you put into this.
I'll tell you one thing though: this ride did show me how easily a few hundred bikers could potentially bring a city to its knees if they so chose. Today showed me that we could quite easily choke the motorway system (the city's lifeblood), and if push comes to shove in the future, it is something that Messrs Merchant Banker Prime Minister; the Rogernomics boys and Business Round Table should note. (They probably won't unfortunately.)
Again, big ups on a good lil' protest ride!

I think that plod did a good job today and I reckon that most of the car's would have enjoyed watching all the bikes go by. The dude who lives next door to me came out when I got home and asked if I had been on the ride.. He was on the the motorway at the same time (in his 4x4), reckons it looked really cool.

This is what will happen, no one is stopping their vigil after Tuesday's ride.

anyone else have any problems with a nob head in a black bmw just after the bridge? i saw him having an arguement with a rider a couple of bikes ahead of me doing hand jestures etc etc then i swear he was trying to take me out only missing me by a couple of inches at best. then had the nerve to toot at me and pull the fingers. steel capped boots would have come in very handy :bash:

I think, if and when we need to, we can close down the big centers at any time we wish, we just hope we don't need to go that far.
Wondering how the guy who binned is feeling now? I know how I would feel.

What a cool ride, thanks to the organisers!
I was 2min late and caught up with the rear of the pack as it was still northbound before Silverdale...heading south just after the U-Turn at Silverdale there was a van the could have caused a pretty big pileup of bikers...he just pulled right out in front of a car caught amongst bikes, narrowly missing (and by narrow I mean less than 1m) both the bikes in front of him and the car behind.
I wish that was caught on camera for the news.
Like some other people have posted I thought it was a bit too hard keeping up with the lead pack. No complaints, but would have been nice to be bunched up a bit instead of trying to keep up...and no it's not because I was on a Honda!
Other than that (and a sore butt) I thought it was a good ride! Power to the people!
EDIT: I just wanted to say that whoever was on the trike up front with the cool skull helmet: I think your skull helmet is cool.

It's news, that's what they do
A great pity though, probably undid most of teh hard work Mom and Maha did.
That road's not really tricky, slow yes, but straight forward.
Either a novice rider who stuffed up , OK, that's what inexperienced means ; or an experienced rider doing stupid shit.
I don't know which , so I'll not make any judgements.
But the lesson is clear
Please LEAVE THE ROSSI STUFF behind, anyone heading down to Wellington (or up to Wellington, or across to Wellington).

I knew at the first turn around that we could have issues with spaces.
The line of bikes was almost back to the start point.
That being said, we did keep to 50 kph till about opposite the Autobahn then up to 70-80kph. We kept around that speed right out Westgate. I had a bike cop alongside at some point talking to me about the turn around at Westgate. He went ahead and halted traffic. The following group approaching Westgate were telling us to slow down, so we did. Slowed to 50kph all the way back into the city. Once throught the City (around Market Rd area) we increased the speed back up to 70kph. Northbound after Karaka, back down to 50kph. A few things learned for sure, as I said before, this is the first group ride on this scale that I have had anything to do with. But!! we got to the Museum at midday which is what I stated at the begining....

The worst part from the TEC perspective seemed to be the change onto the norwestern... I was doing 115-120 (with a bike cop following on just behind me !) to catch up to the lead pack with a couple of riders who'd joined late. Other than that I think the traffic screwed the flow in a couple of areas - so that is wasn't no much the speed of the lead pack - but the stop/start in traffic of the rear that caused the seperation and allowed more cages into the pack.
All in all I think it was pretty smooth - it's very hard to get a big pack moving like that - especially through single lane interchanges, and not get a few cages in between. It was hard though at the tail end to keep the bikes pushing forward to close the gaps - even if we slowed the cars that pull into our lane - as there were a lot of riders who still didn't move forward.
That said - I would much much rather see overcautious riders and have a few gaps than see everyone splitting like crazy to jump to the front of the pack. Credit to all that there were no incidents en-route.
Anyone at the rear have trouble with the silver merc that tried to take me out, then mully, then cut in further up, and then left the motorway complete a few hundred metres up? tosser! (another steel toe cap moment in the making on other circumstances!)

.... I reckon that most of the car's would have enjoyed watching all the bikes go by. ...
I think that there was a nose-to-tail on the Southern just at Papakura. As we rode back up, heading north, I thought that the cars travelling south were banking up fast and I thought "we did that". Afterwards when I returned home, on the same stretch of motorway, there was sand covering oil so I guess some cager was so busy rubber-necking at us and didn't see the slow traffic ahead.

I was riding probably three quarters of the way back (or more). At the Westgate roundabout the light went red a few bikes in front of me and we all came to a standstill for it behind the two who stopped. There was someone blocking the road in from the Hobsonville side so no traffic was coming around, but the compliance with the red light obviously won the day. I'm not sure if I'd have gone through it either, but now I know what to expect I would see it differently.
Could have used some more poliss as I see it.
Anyway that gave a big gap with cars in, probably with no idea we were trying to ride as a column with those far in front. We were doing similar speeds to try and close the gap.

Big ups to the organisers...
... and the cops. There were a few muftis in the crowd of cars, as well as the HP cars and bikes that really did an awesome job of streamlining the whole thing, and helped prevent the ride from getting split up and spreading out
Thanks all. An awesome day out.

Thank you for your comments DidJit...
Good on ya mate for all the hard work and in the end you clicked on to the best speed so all good as far as I'm concerned!!
It was probably a bloody good shake down run for the big one on Monday (and future rides) for Ixion and his crew. I can't make it so good luck all!!!
500 in Dunedin bloody good effort!! Com'on us Dorklanders we gotta get our shit together twice the bikes here!!

It was possibly publicity (outside KB and BRONZ) that let us down a bit ... Whilst I was handing out flyers during the week - I spoke to quite a number of bikers - none said "oh yeah I know about it..."

Facebook linky?
(there's usually a "public link" at the bottom of albums to share pic albums with the world - you don't even have to be on facebook to view em)
Of course you can also put the piccy up on facebook and use the IMG tags to display the piccy here saving KB bandwidth...
Stand by then. I've done Miss Mully's ones, but I have to do mine.

Having skimmed all these ACC threads I must say that I'm really (truly) surprised at how many kb'ers have not ridden in large groups before. Don't you go on poker runs? Don't you go on rallies? WTF?
I ride in groups of dozens or more regularly and hundreds occasionally. You pick your spot and stick to it. How hard can it be?
However, good on everyone for taking part and I hope that the experiences of late will make the next group ride more comfortable. There's nothing like being part of a big bunch, it's an adrenaline rush, no alcohol (etc) required.

...and good on ya for making it through your first group ride... can be quite a scary experience - totally different to riding solo - suddenly you have to start thinking not only about your own position - but where is everyone else and where are they going..
it does get easier - I like riding in groups - so long as you trust those riding around you - it always helps if you can work out what they'll do in any given situation.. !

I saw that about 40m ahead of me. Was curious what that was about too......although imagine what 300+ bikers would have done to him had he knocked you off! What are these suicidal f-wits thinking?!
He's thinking - I could hurt them, I won't be hurt and as the victim they will have to pay increased levies.
So in the interests of one levy for all, I propose we find them and beat them to a bloodied pulp. Don't kill them though - just enough to leave them on ACC for 20 or 30 years

Well said. Keep your act together and the rush is like nothing else.
The first time I rode in a group (back in the 70's) I thought all hell had broken loose, but fuck, what a buzz. You can smoke pot, drink piss, pop pills, shoot smack, smoke P, snort coke or fuck the missus (if you're bored) but riding with 300-odd Harleys just pops ya socks.
If you're gonna go non-denominational then 300 can reach into the thousands and 'incomprehensional' works its way into the vocabulary.
ACC, fuck 'em.
