i too really enjoyed ride yesterday, had to do a quick turn around at Akaroa to get back to Chch but what a great day for it - spent day today going from open home to open home being insanely jealous at all the bikes on the road! also thought Neels pace wasn't too bad out there on the ol XJ - easy rider to follow
Neels does a great job punting the ol XJ and great to follow,I agree!

Was a nice ride cruising behind Neels and you, with young Ben on the FJ1200 and Vgygrwr on the smooth TDM tusked behind me most of the day.

I followed Flip most of the way home...I had a big smile & a :woohoo:watching Flip on the Harley, followed by brps buddy pulling a mono most of the way up the Takamatua Straight!

The weather sounds like it may be crappy tomorrow. (Yes I know, be a doom and gloom merchant.)

If the weather is marginal we could go somewhere local, like Halswell, Old Taitap, Gebbies, around the bays and lunch at a pub.

If the weather is good we could go to Oxford or Greta Valley.

Or we could all go to Flip's place.

Let's see what the weather is like in the morning

Thanks for the ride everyone! The weather turned out nice but I still needed those warm gloves and a warm lunch by the time we reached Oxford.

My toolkit seems to have done the same thing as one of the drummers from spinal tap: at the second check point today I looked down and there was no toolkit or toolkit cover, but only a small globule of smouldering black plastic goo on the exhaust pipe right under where it should have been. Conclusion: the toolkit at some point during the first part of the ride turned into a small globule of smouldering black goo and jump down onto the exhaust pipe... (nothing to do with insecure fastening of course).

Sweet - would have been gutted to have spoilt your day with a puncture! I can live without those cheapo tools - I only need to replace the thingy to unscrew the spark plug. I just hope they didn't cause a problem for someone else where ever they fell out. Note to self: don't trust cheapo plastic toolkit holder to do its job.

Not sure, but back in the late 70's, whatever he had been drinking allowed one to ride his Kawasaki 900(?) from the carpark at the Dutch Mill pub in Aberdeen - midwinter, only about six inches of ice and compacted snow on the ground. Nutter.

I suspect that the be-skerted, hairy chested teapickers are actually quite harmless.

The ones who are a big worry keep pet singing octopi. At least the owners claim them to be musical. They usually dress them in tartan cloth. (To keep them warm???) The owners can then be seen taking their pets for for walks, sometimes in very large groups. As you may imagine this many "singing" octopi can make an awful racket. I suspect the "singing" may be a mating call however someone else can probably correct me on this.:rofl::Oops::Offtopic:

Missed the ride yesterday but the weather was pretty nice today so dragged the bike out. Decided to check out the view from the Summit Road. Rather than phaff round down Ferry Road and thru Sumner decided to duck through the tunnel and ride from Lyttleton to Evans Pass.
BAD DECISION. Expected a cold damp road with grit. Didn't expect the patches of ice. Trickling up there in 3rd gear being ever so careful and having the bike break into wheelspin focusses the mind!
The view from the Summit Road was brilliant (if a bit hazy) and only a couple of dodgy patches.
Returned home nice and cheerful and didn't even mind thrashing around in the garden.

It would be a good idea for folks to avoid that section of road and the road from the tunnel to governors bay both can stay frozen for days.

Because the bikes take up the garage space, the poor old car has to live outside so I've parked it on the lawn 'cause that gets the most sun (a couple of hours worth). The driveway gets none during winter!

Wish I could have got out, but had family down on Sat and work on Sun... this week looks more like Sun for reasonable weather (although I'll likely be proved the fool again, trusting a weatherman) so I might save up the "road points" for then - got to have them, they balance out the "commute points" of getting on when it's a 2 degree frost!

Pinlock is awesome... but only availble with certain lids, so any of the stick on anti fog screans will do ya, be sure not to have a air leak when done tho.
Another idea is cat crap... its good but dosent last that long, ya rub it on sorta deal, cheap as.

ps: cat crap is a product name and not to be mistaken for... cat crap. (felion stool)

or do these kits require drilling the visor? cos thats not easy.

If you use a small sharp drill bit and dont drill to fast or use to much pressure it wont crack.

Drilling plastic sucessfully is a bit easier if you use a 'zero angle' sharpened drill.

I have been out in some pretty cold weather (:shifty: try 5am in winter), but I just don't think my body would take it everyday! it would be 'kill or cure'. i am crazy enough to try it a few times, but just bear in mind what happened to the shortest serving US president (I forget his name): trying to make himself look like a tough guy, for his inaugural speech, he stood outside in the cold for one hour (or however long it was) talking about what he would do in office. without a coat on. he died of pneumonia a few weeks later.

Yep - very much enjoyed, only the one sphincter-clencher on the grit drifts (why is that grade of "metal" so rounded? would have thought the more angular "normal" coarser metal would be better!)... Has taken a bit of time to warm back up tho, the shadows certainly do keep the temp down!

Oh - for those who were interested in the ACC discussion, have a look at

for the comments on the Sexual Abuse claims stuff... interesting, if not sad at the same time. Seems like even more of NZ life, the laws might be there but mean nothing unless you've got the deep pockets to take it right thru the courts and WIN a "test case", usually an individual against an established & entrenched (semi-)(corporate) qango.

was a great ride even though conditions were as to be expected for winter riding - everyone seemed happy to go at their own pace and give following riders room to overtake if they wanted to do so. I'm happy to keep following riders that might be going a bit 'slower' (for want of a better word...safer could be used as well) than i would usually go - it is a group ride after all

And if dozing its often a beter save, as you tend to be more relaxed than if ya expecting it therfore ya react beter.

On this note re: the gravel we often experance this time of year, when ya see it comming expect movment but know that the feelng of sliding is just the wheels rolling over the shit, let the bike role and on the other side you will gain traction, best I can say is button off the juce till through (sometimes its neeed to juse it up to straighten the bike up but usually only in a big bad situation, "go with the flow" you are in control of the bike not the other way round, don't forget that.

I ran into a savage cross wind on SH1 between Blenheim and Picton at the start of a storm on a Triumph 1200 Trophy we had a few years ago. I had to put so much pressure on the bars to keep the bike on the road I felt my wrist pop out and click back in. That really gave me the shits and I had concerns that I had damaged that wrist permanently for months after. I do miss the power of the Trophy from time to time but not is side winds, I also joke about the weight of the HD but it is brilliant in strong cross winds, wide bars, low side sail area and low CoG.

Would you believe I have entered that road crossing on the summit rd too hot on a couple of times now. I was distracted by a dog that came out of the walkway but even so my brain does not seem to recognising how fast that crossing comes up.

I'm now planning to mount a Kalashnikov on the MG mount, partly as a inertia canceling tool but mostly to warn off any jap bike riders that pass me with a warning shot across the bow. But seriously I must get around to making a brake backing plate and mount a set of brake shoes in the side car wheel, its just that these days I would prefer to be out riding, and not stuck in the workshop on a lathe making shit. I even have the shoes and a bit of 3/8" hard aluminum gear plate to make the thing out of. It would be nice to have 30's tek brakes on all 3 wheels.

Now let me see.... a 30round mag of 7.62x39 150 grain bullets traveling at 2400ft/sec......ummmmm................... slows down a 450kg motorcycle traveling at 50 mph.............drops about 0.4 mph in 3 seconds then runs out of ammo......... bugger it does not work......... Just remember to get the hazmat suit out for when you're milling that DU...

Must admit - probably not nice for the people for following me - but I tend to slow down when I get "crowded". EG like that road where the visibility drops off and the hill & trees start giving you a slight tunnel effect; again, probably comes from learning to ride around Wanganui where you'd be amazed at the number & stupidity if feral sheep grazing the longacres (after escaping as lambs)... certainly made me wary. Also didn't help on Sat having pedestrians 3 abreast in the other lane as I came down the incline there (1 jogger pasing 2 walkers) absolutely no way out for any car coming up apart from swinging into my lane....!

Just one pedal, that pedal activates a pivoting force splitting bar. One side of the bar goes to the back brake and the other pulls a bowden cable that activates the chair brake.

Mrs Jackal enjoyed the ride but admitted to me when we got home that she closed her eyes a couple of times on those hair-pin bends. She is still walking around here rubbing her bum.(The pillion seat on the Guzzi is not the most comfiest of seats). Thanks again and will catch up again soon..............cheers Craig

We weren't talking about the BMer which is what Flip took to the BM.

HWFM rode Flip's Road King on Saturday while we were stopped at Rittle River. Despite all Phil's extras on and in the bike it is fair to say he was more than mildly impressed.

Flip is yet to ride HWFM's bike and pass judgement, we await this event with interest.

Definitely a candidate journey for one of my favorite songs - Take the Long Way Home by Supertramp ... does anyone else remember those first Subaru ads that had that as the background music - probably 1979-81 sometime? Always thought the car going off into the sunset on a high country back road to that music was pure magic; obviously before all the WRX / Impreza posers!

I can usually get 200kms before going onto reserve (unless there's a strong head wind), so will need one top-up along the way. Does anyone know if there's a petrol station somewhere around the halfway mark?

We will have a "splash" at Darfield which will take us through to Ashburton.

Please note guys n gals the total journey is some 300+Ks.

308kms round trip. Thats what Ginny and I did last Saturday. Keep an eye out for the Guzzi somewhere along the scenic route and we will join in the ride for part of it. (If the weathers OK)

Had a shower of go thru before sunrise this morning but blue sky with very high cloud in places and about 10 degrees outside at the moment. Should be a great day for a ride. (At least until that shitty southerly gets here). Will probably meet you guys at Mayfield between 1330hrs and 1400hrs if you are heading that way first?????

Great ride. Got about 10 min rain around Ashvegas. The checkered flag was a great place to stop for a late lunch.

A couple of folk took pics, show and tell.
