thanks for waiting at ashburton

292kms on my odo, definitely my longest trip so far! much of the second half done cruising with my feet on the pillion pegs (which was surprisingly comfortable).

just a splash of rain on the return trip D, not bad considering the dark colour of the sky

Got about 10 min rain around Ashvegas.

Well, that makes me happy for being slightly antisocial and skipping out early - I only got a couple of "spits" but was quite chilled down by the time I got home, reckon I need to get on with making myself up a heated vest or something (ahh, more toy projects).

Anyway, nice to get out and I guess RQ has truely christened her new front rubber now?

Hey wait for me!

What a great ride today!! loved it although a tad bit bloody freezing on way back! But great day out with some great people!

Retroqueen let me have a ride on her bike, now how can I describe that? GOOD GOD!!! (censored version, actual remark which was something like F@*# ME!) Who would have thought a motorbike with an engine 5 times bigger than my own beast from hell (cough) was that quick lol

HWFE - so on that basis would you consider going from a GN250 straight to that bike to be a "bad idea" for any reason? I mean: how long before I got out of the habit of riding everywhere full throttle for example

Seriously, I wish I had watched you pull away on the 1300  but I was busy cleaning oil off my hands after performing a "technical adjustment" to my trusty steed

The other people in the checkered flag seemed to be interested in our goings on - they asked me on the way out who the two people doing the bike swap were (maybe they were explaining it to one of the kids there) and asked whose was the "little" motorbike

Did the GN go any faster after your "Technical adjustment" and if I go back down there will I find the removed item disgarded in the bushes?

Went from an XL250RC to a K100RT cold - 250, maybe 25hp@6000rpm (wring it out) and 150kg? - to 1000cc, 90hp@4000rpm, abt 280kg ... wouldn't recommend that level of jump esp if the bike doesn't have a linear powerband, you'll either be too timid to enjoy it (and be predictable for other road users?) or continually concentrating more on keeping the bike under control than on the road.

Guess it all comes down to how many crises you can deal with at once - and a power slide in the wrong place on an unfamilar bike will be starting multiple ones, not just be one. (Yes, have had one on the first BMW - uphill passing at 100+ on a gentle left hander. Oncoming traffic, but luckily had left it to a passing lane and nothing chivvying me along from behind either. Most envigorating.)

Helped with me that most of the riding I did after the swap was on very familiar SH between Wanganui & Palmerston Nth - no real brown-trou moments, but a lot of "translating" - oh that's different, don't need a gear change here, but do need to back off etc etc.

(And if any one says "Whanganui", well it wasn't back then! Go whipe my ...)

Yeah thats a good ride. Its not bad up there for grit. Definately ride to the conditions as normal though. If someone isn't confident then they can go from Evens around the bays and meet back up with us at Gebbies. Yes the ride is the whole way across the summit road. HWFM'S route sounds good to me lol :Punk:

It's such a nice day out there.
I was on the MTB just popping out the top of Kennedys Bush on to the Summit Rd when 3 motorbikes went past.
Timing would have been about right and it looked like the KBers with I suspect Robertvi on the GN.
I would say they would be having a really nice ride as it was really nice up there.

Yah keen Transalper and anyone else that wants to - to meet down at the Waimak/Mc Cleans next saturday and do some single track stuff ? (Like in ya video)

Midweek adventure riding too be the go - say on a wednesday morning or arvo ?

Transalper

Don't have any regular midweek days off, midweek evenings are a bit sparse too although I can get off about 7pm on the odd midweek day or slightly earlier if I give up some overtime and thus at a cost.
Weekends, well have to see what the weather brings as the next really nice weekend that presents itself as forecast to be fine both sides of the Island will be a weekend away to the coast with the boss. She has put in the request. Any weekend nice here but wet there has potential though.
Not sure which of my videos you talking about but by saying Single track and Waimak I'm guessing you're talking a ride I can Van the CRF to? I'd like to get the CRF out a bit more.
I've got my eye on the Lees Valley river level too. Every time it gets low enough to go it fills up again before the weekend.

Sorry not to reply before the ride - I was out picking up a new rear tyre this morning. We ended up going to Evan's pass, along summit road, to Gebbies pass then on to Duvauchelle. I'm not sure if that counts as suitable for a beginner or not - but I've also only been riding about 5 months myself. It's always possible to ride along at your own pace taking it easy if you come next time.

Note we didn't publicly advertise this last trailride which was deemed a trail ride rather than an adventure.
We would have posted a thread in the Adv forum but the ride was specifically for a few of the learners with us (two absolute beginners only been at it a few months and several returning riders) so were expecting a very slow moving group and didn't want it any bigger than it already was.
Next one however, well BRP and others have already put a hand up so I imagine business as usual.
Cynna, you looking for company on Saturday? Maybe a thread or post added in the Adventure forum?.. maybe revive an old thread... Northern Canterbury Adv Rideouts
(http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/103919-Northern-Canterbury-Adv-Rideouts?highlight=canterbury)
I've been thinking it's time to take the 650 for a lap and also about ready to do a run out through Okains Bay etc. via shingle. Want to get in while the grounds damp before the dust rises again for Summer.

Very slow moving group, and quite a bit of stopped, the XL250 doesn't go so well lying on it's side.. There's certainly plenty of water about, some of the tracks were the river in places.

Weather forecast for sat is changing every time I check it, so I think I'll just look out the window and decide at departing time.

If you're heading north I'll pick you guys up at the motorway onramp off marshlands road and just tag on the back. If I'm there I'll join in, if I'm not then I'm either late and I'll catch up or I've wussed out.

i noticed some flooding on old taitapu road this evening: on the corner before Rossendale vineyard, travelling towards christchurch, most of the lane was under water - be careful, it's on a blind bend. my side (heading towards taitapu) was clear.

also watch out for ducks on the road exploring the new lakes and ponds (i slowed down for a pair of 'em on halswell quarry road) :D

see you all tomorrow with my fresh rubber rear end! :wari:

Great day for a ride. Pretty uneventful other than dodging people movers and white hatchbacks, and a startled cyclist that obviously didn't expect to find a bike overtaking a bus around the next bend.

Summit road wasn't too terrible considering the time of year, around the bays was interesting with quite a bit of clay from what was the banks lying on the road.

Was in good company with the new toy today, the plan for ducati world domination progresses one step further..:devil2:

Good to see Gibbo89 out for his first saturday ride, it seems the summit road is becoming the initiation for first timers

'uckin oath!

riding along quite happily then realised by input was doing nothing and i was drifting to the side of the road with about a foot of run off onto a 5m drop....FUCK YOU GRIT!

rode along the grass verg of doom for a bit sliping and sliding then rejoined the road where I took some deep breaths (which only fogged up my visor) and shook myself down.

otherwise it was a pretty typical winter ride, full of muddy roads with unmarked grit and cold tyres....

I WANT FUCKIN SUMMER BACK NOW!

Well by the time I got there and back I had remembered how to drive a crash box. Left a trail of grouched gears and a few complete misses along the way.

I still hate road ranger boxes.

Around the bays to Diamond Harbour it is, I will have foster son Zac in the side car so its going to be a slow trip for me.

Wife was very patient last night listening to me rave on (and on)

I did two sessions in the 'no passing class' then decided to join Leapordskin in the next class up. To speed up the day they let us and the fast guys out together. There would have been 30+ bikes on track. Getting divebombed by the fast guys at the end of the straight gets the heart ticking...

I really enjoyed myself. I seldom feel 100% comfortable on the road. Even when totally behaving yourself I have this underlying sense of random danger.

A track day is soooo affordable. For me, it gets all the frustration out of the system and reduces the desire to bother riding quick on the road.

You won't notice any difference. A extra metre and/or axle , and all trucks running 50+ hav high hp engines. And run specific routes. As dangerous said ....You didn't even notice the 50 tonne trails that happened last year.
No major handling difference , pull up better( more weight on tyres), and no slower. Another 5 tonne is nothing with 500hp under the bonnet. I was passing container trucks running only 39 tonne up brougham street from red lights.

Speed is the major issue round kaikoura coast road, that and poor driver training.

Yeah, we did the 50 tonne trial last year, the trucks performed well and we are going to be carting the extra weight shortly with the same configuration... ie, no extra length or axles.

No major handling difference , pull up better( more weight on tyres), and no slower. Another 5 tonne is nothing with 500hp under the bonnet. I was passing container trucks running only 39 tonne up brougham street from red lights.

Modern trucks/ heavy motor vehicles do perform better with more weight, including braking... ours all have EBS/ABS etc, and they pull up quicker than some old cars I reckon.

Speed is the major issue round kaikoura coast road, that and poor driver training.

This statement is just so true! Time pressures and lack of experience are no excuse and make us (drivers) all look bad.

Again! shit thats no good, love to catch up and hear the story.

Yeah our truck and trailers ok for 50+ as is no change , but be more quad tractor units instead of single steers and quad trailers instead of tri axle. The inter island guys etc will make use of the extra length where they space out instead of weight out.
We have had to change the program on our ebs/abs system on quad tractor/quad trailer but that is it.

I think Alot of people would be surprised how quick we can pull up with modern disc brake systems , air suspension and the ebs/abs systems that are pretty much std on new units going on the road. The geenie movement feed alot of miss-information to support their views.

We went out through Scargill... leaving the cracks in the roads behind us as we got out of the town/Kaiapoi area. The road was really good, and the weather was fantastic... it was easy to leave the thoughts of the carnage in town behind.
Greta pub was as accomodating as always...and we headed for home with the company of a fellow rider... on the Black GS1400 (sorry, can't remember your name mate). It was great to get out and about today as I have been making the most of my week off, clocking up the 'K's, just incase i have to send it back to the shop!! lol :)
By the way Mr Hornet.... very nice looking pipes on your Predator!! :)

nah peeteey, found my bike at about 5am this morning. the right brake lever is bent pretty weird, right foot peg is bent. handle bars may slightly be bent but it might just be me being fussy.

it seems like the govt is going to be covering peoples excess on earthquake damage. (dont quote me on that). but i dont think my damage is going to cost as much as my excess will.

Ditto with the damage here - car vs bike in the garage, but bike is 3rd party only (so no EQC premium AFAIK) and the car is with AMI, who have their "$500 excess within 100m of your home so you must use a garage" approach, so we'll be up for that.

BUT - **big**, enormous, planet-sized "but" - we're griping about peanuts compared to those who've lost houses (and with some even the land itself might be banned for a rebuild I'd guess, given the liquefaction/instability)... all sympathy to them, I hope they can cope and try it keep it positive; in some cases, I think whole suburbs may end up ceasing to exist as we have known them.

As I always say - and try to mean it - take care, everyone.

they say significant aftershocks could continue for about 2 days, including maybe up to magnitude 6.

Hmmm fun - have a look at http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/recent_quakes.html - all top 30 are Canterbury, looks like they're averaging around 4 - if it stays at the gentle swaying I'll be happy (but must admit it has to be a severe PITA for all the people involved in the recovery/stabilization efforts too... hope they have a big damn civic street party in thanks to all those people putting in the extra mile when this is all said & done!!)

How is the wind in the City? Blowing a gale out here. Power has been off for an hour an a half, just come back on.

I stepped out side 20 minutes ago and there was not a breath of wind.
But now there a good wind building, so batten down the thatchers.

lets hope it doesn't get any shallower seeing it's relatively close!
so I guess it still comes down to keeping up the "Be Prepared".

Hey kids, I'm so glad to read so many people have come away (relatively) unscathed!
We've all been very very lucky considering ...
Because the schools are closed as is the CSM, I'm effectively unemployed for the next while so if anyone needs any help with anything, lemme know as I'm going to have lots of spare time!

anyone ever had their exhaust 're skinned'? that terminology might not be quite right. apparently that might be the case for my exhaust if my insurance company are feeling generous...
