i am just kinda keen to get out on the bike, with new scratches on the exhaust, bent brake lever, bent foot peg too. i know some people have bigger things to worry about at the moment, but some may be keen for a wee blast in an attempt to forget about the mess for a couple/few hours.
at least you have permission now willy!

at least your getting your repairs underway. i just don't know whether to pay the excess and get everythig done, or to just fix the brake lever and toughen up with some scratches and bent foot peg.

Good you're looking after yourself anyway, no point in glossing over it and no stigma - I think this whole "you'll have aftershocks for weeks" thing is a big wake up (sadly literally for some) for the wider NZ public, it's always been portrayed as sort of becoming definite outcomes from a fixed initial event after maybe 3-7 days (eg tidy up, repair, or relocate while evaluate/rebuild)... Again, a bit of a big reality to live with.

Same arrangement as last week with riders joining in along the way. (Check my post for last week Page 64.)
And I second that about no major quakes. Quakes of 3 to 4 I can live with if I have to. My flat on the second story of a 100+ year old wooden house gets whiplash with 5 to 7 quakes!!!!:shit::shit::sick::sick:

Just in case anybody doesn't already know, the chaneys onramp onto the motorway is trashed, and the old waimak bridge is possibly still closed. Probably the best way out of town is to ride the waves down cranford street and up the main north road.
So one way or another I'll pick you guys up at the pub in belfast on the way through, unless someone posts otherwise for a change of route.
See ya on the road.

Stash a relay somewhere with control power from the ignition? (or are these the fancy ones that lose the setting if you turn them off?) ... Should only be two extra wires (ign - maybe use one of the dreaded tap-ons - and a light earth for control side) and split the +ve feed line to the grip controller after the fuse ...

Ah well, if you had been on last weeks ride..... lol. I was on parental duty today, so had to content myself with pulling the bikes exhaust system apart and painting the catalytic converter. I had a dilemma - black or silver. Black would have been sensible and inconspicuous but silver would look cool. Went for silver (which it turns out is more a light grey) and now wishing I had used black! That's the breaks, it was a PITA to get off and back on too. Still, it looks better than the bare metal finish it was and hopefully won't corrode. So i can stay that way for a while.
Then just to finish off replaced the thermostat and rocker cover gasket on the boy's Corolla ( the one that you saw me in the other night).
Wish I had been riding though :scooter:

Yea, weren't sure which direction the Adventure was going when I sorted which day it would be so borrowed the BK carpark idea but made sure we would leave before it got too confusing mixing sealed road and dirt road riders.
The resulting photos etc from our ride are over there (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/127659-Canterbury-basic-Adventure-Cruise-Saturday-11-September-2010/page3) from post #37 on.
Some of us Adv guys went home from Akaroa using the main highway and have reported that the road is in pretty good condition all things considered. I noted a the odd extra bump and a couple of thin cracks across the seal between Akaroa and Duvauchelle so continue to respect the road as being a road not a track as you should always do anyway.
Akaroa itself appeared to have very little damage.
Duvauchelle Pub is taped off, we went on the dirt road behind it so didn't have a good look at it from the front.
Godley House is cordoned off and has a red sticker on it so both those favourite stops are in trouble.
218475
The Weatie had lights on and cars in the carpark and looked like it was operating normally as we rode past about 5:45pm.
I'm meeting some sealed road riders at the Peg for an 11am departure today, lunch at Cheviot and home via Gore Bay (just in case anyone is looking to get out for more therapy today I'm sure they won't mind others joining in)

I'm sure they will suggest something from their range if you ask when you get there.
It probably don't matter which you use as much as changing it regularly does. A lot of us (me included) do filters every time too where as others do filters every second time.
Spectro is about $50 for 4 liters. DR650 filters about $15. IIRC.

on my 1997 owners manual i found, it says it recommends sae 10w/40 correct or 15/40 (10's for well below zero*) Flips bikes cant be compeared to yours hench his heavy weight oil.
anyone care to suggest where i should buy some oil for an oil change on the wee zeal?... repco, super cheap, bike shops load their prices, any semi syn will do.

4T is full syn? its good shit but a bit dear hence a semi syn beter value for money4T is non synthetic, $40-something for 4 litres. Seemed to work OK in my XJ. It's 15W-50 rather than 10W-40 but I can't see that making a huge difference when you look at the temp ranges for different oils in the manual.
Weather looks good for tomorrow, other than possibly a bit breezy, so hopefully I should be able to make it for a blat to Akaroa.

I like ELF 10/40 semi syn. Available from most bike shops-I use it in the GSXR 750, the 600, the Motard and the bucket. About $55-4L.

I stand corrected Valvolene diesel extra. 15W40 SL. love the stuff. Landrover loves it too.
About the only diference between these medium diesel oils and passanger vehicle oil is the diesel oil has a stronger detergent package, just don't use them if the car has a cat because the metal molecule in the detergent pollutes the cat.

went to budget motorcycle spares, i got 4 liters of oil and a filter for $80, the oil was $62. but i'll need to buy another 1 litre for the next oil change as this oil change will be 2 point something litres apparently.
im wondering if there is a wee washer type thing that will need replacing as well? to do with the sump or the bolt thing that you undo when removing the current oil.

Careful not to strip ya threads etc etc. Damned if you leave it too loose, damned if you over tighten it.

Is this a maintenance thred????????????????
I needed to get that out!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oil...................... As Flip will tell you modern bikes which have their oil lubricate the engine as well as the clutch and gearbox are exceedingly hard on their oil!!!!!!!!!!!
I change the oil and filter at about half the recomended distance. Filters are cheap, I change mine each time I do the oil, false economy not to. At the moment I'm using a semi sinthetic 10/40 grade. During the warmer weather I will be running a heavier grade straight mineral oil.
Totally confused yet??????????
Unlike some I have found Budget to be good to deal with.

So I'm assuming its a spin on filter, if it is a leather belt wrapped around it works good to unscrew them, or in the case of the wife's golf the other night a roof rack tie with a bit of bike inner tube over it.

Nothing broken but she will no doubt be hobling for a while and Neil will be ducking the flack (car and trailer U turned on em) So Im asuming at this point Louise is sinking back some liquid pain killers...

Big thank you to everybody for stopping and lending a hand, and holding her hand while I talked to the nice policeman, mrs neels apologies for all the screaming but she couldn't help it because it really really fucking hurt.

A quick rundown of our (fortunately) minor altercation on the ride yesterday, for those that are wondering what the hell we're on about.
Coming around the bend at the Little River pub on the way to Akaroa, there were flashing lights ahead and I was wondering what was going on. About the same time the van coming the other way started turning right across my lane into the pub carpark. A quick thought of shit he's not turning is he, fuck he is, fuck he's not stopping, aimed for the bit of clear road in front as he had a trailer on the back. Got a slight bump on the back and had a bit of a wobble so thought he'd just clipped the back of the bike and I should stop to see if there was any damage, until the screaming from the back told me I needed to stop a bit quicker. Pulled over and mrs executed the fastest dismount I've ever seen, got down on the ground and informed me in no uncertain terms that the van had infact hit her foot and it fucking hurt.
Fortunately there were already firemen, medics and police there as the flashing lights were for a cyclist that had crashed up the road, ironically the guy that hit us was the STMS for the event who was clearing the road so the rescue chopper could land. So after some attention from the assembled emergency services, mrs was stuck in the chopper with the cyclist and sent on her way to the hospital, a quick chat to the local policeman to sort out what had happened and where, and I was off to the hospital to check out how things were. After not too much waiting around, xrays and some poking and prodding they established that nothing was broken, so off home to put her feet up.
So the end result is one badly bruised foot and leg, one destroyed right boot that thankfully did it's job, a new racing stripe down my rh muffler. Could have been much much worse, so all in all we're counting ourselves pretty lucky.
Cheers to everyone for the help at the time and the kind thoughts since.

sounds like you two were pretty lucky! So was it the front of the van that clipped you? i.e you went left around the van as it was pulling in front of you?
must have been a good day for the ride apart from the van incident...
I was meant to be on the ride but the fucking oil filter was such a mission. I went to super cheap to buy a specific oil filter wrench thing, brought it back, tied it around the filter and the damn thing snapped... she was on pretty tight it would seem. finally got it off at about ten past 12. oh well, guess she is ready for next weeks ride i guess.
