Nice wee ride. Haven't done that in a while and missed it. Pity I'll be in Ackas next week. Thanks Ben for the ride back. Pity that passing lane was closed going up the Haywards on the way home, was inch perfect with the handlebars next to those road cones

Good to see some familiar faces and to meet some new ones.

The new blue machine certainly rolls over the Hill a bit differently than did the Shiver.

Yeah, was not expecting that lane to be closed on haywards (it was open when I rode to the duckpond). I was also tempted to weave through the cones and use it.

Bloody woman in the car blocking the right hand lane (going about 95) on SH1 got on my nerves though. Why she didn't just pull over rather than sit there and match the speed of the car in the left hand lane is beyond me.

All in all it was a good ride tonight with surprisingly little traffic on the hill.

Yeah. I think I'd used up all my mojo so was just waiting behind her chilling out after the ride. I waited to watch the wrath of the street triple be unleashed to pass her. Pass her it did :niceone:

No worries mate - there are always spare drinks and wedges around me (thanks Matt).

Far too soft to have that last drink - lets just say I slept like a log.

Great ride - as always. Damn I love Wednesdays.

6:00pm at the Elephant Pond for a 6:30pm departure?
Ahh... the ol' Elephant pond, that name goes back to Bruces time. And yes I saw the elephant too.

Nice to catch up with the usual suspects. We didnt join the ride as we had a RAT meeting, but had a good blat over the PKak Hill anyway.

The 500 passed it's WOF today so I've now got a dilemma....... Do I use the 500 tonight and give her a run over the hill as I've already got her in work. Or do I shoot home and grab the Katana.
Haven't been over the hill on the 500 for a lonnnngggggg time.

Decisions, Decisions.

However, I may need the Katana to keep up with Katiepie.

Good luck down with the racing Jimmy! Looking forward to seeing the results.

And hawkeye... honey... reckon ya must be blind. I am forever turning up last and last only. The more I do that hill on my bike, the slower I seem to become. Just seem to have a block about it in corners.

Go for the 500 I reckon - for a change :)

lol - just ask Andrew how I was on Monday. He was sitting behind me and I was slippin all over the show so backed riiiiight off! Slowest ride up there in a long time.

As for taking the 500 - once again, very kind of you. But I fee terrible borrowing other peoples bikes. Greatly looking forward to a change of mine one day for a little more fun factor.

Good ride tonight all.
Was a pretty close call at Kaitoke when a Policeman looked as if he was gonna do a you-eee into our pack, and the staggered formation has proven to me yet again why we use it....

But a great ride...see you all again soon

Enjoyable ride back for a while, but I was distinctly unimpressed with a rider on a orange and black bike trying to overtake me on the way home, riding side by side round a tight bend, he then backed off half way round when he realised that he couldn't see what was coming the other way. Blasted past me on the straight, maybe I'm too much of a grandad but I felt very unsafe and thought it was a dangerous manoeuvre, kinda spoilt the ride for me.

Cloggy
26th January 2011, 21:41
maybe I'm too much of a grandad
You felt like a granddad? I rode like a granddad. I felt decidedly old, stiff, and totally out of form coming over that hill tonight. I seem to have a real dislike for RH corners. Don't know why. Part of the reason for doing a track day around Manfeild was to get over the dislike of RH corners and it felt good on the track. Back on the road is a totally different ball game again.
I don't have this issue on my little Scorpio. Might have to park that up and use the Daytona more for day to day running around to get more into the groove with it.

davebullet
27th January 2011, 07:28
I seem to have a real dislike for RH corners. Don't know why.

Me too and others I've spoken too. I think it comes down to either instinctively keeping distance from oncoming traffic, therefore the apex is wider (avoiding the centre line) and lean isn't as great so one feels like the corner is going slower. Another possibility is throttle position when the right hand is tucked in a bit. Yet another reason might come down to whether you are right or left handed.

I'm right handed and I wonder if that has something to do with me prefering left corners. A bit like I prefer red or brunette ladies.

Gone Burger
27th January 2011, 08:16
I'm right handed and I wonder if that has something to do with me prefering left corners.

You may have a point there. I favour right hand corners and am left handed. Right side peg much more worn down then the left.

And John - the bike you are talking about.. was it the harley? If so, he is a mate of mine and I will have a word to him. I'm in hope it was just a bad judgement call rather than him being a twat, as I have ridden with him often and he doesn't usually do this.

I'm left handed (yes I know, it's a curse being gifted ) and prefer left corners as well. Think it's a safety thing, the thought that there could be a car coming the other way just as you apex a right corner is always in my mind and causes me to adjust my lines and body postion on the bike accordingly.

That said, the ride back last night was really good. Was trying to follow Matt on his cb1000r, who was leaving me for dust. Wasn't until I realised that he was riding nice and smooth hardly using his brakes and caring a lot of corner speed and I should stop trying to go so fast on the straight bits and focus on smooth entry and exit to the corners, that I started enjoying the ride a lot more and going quicker (well it felt quicker).

I'm my own worst enemy sometimes!

I'd be interested in whether people generally use the brakes up hill over the 'takas. I tend not to and only use engine braking.

I find avoiding the brakes helps with lines. Putting brakes on tends to pitch the bike forward, which means it makes bike understeer? (I know the difference btween under / oversteer - just can't remember which it causes without being on the bike) - which unsettles it for me.

I'm also trying to roll on the gas earlier, as I find this plants the back, takes pressure of the front (doesn't make me feel like the front will slide / tuck with too much weight on it) and helps hold the line coming out.

Wrong thread for the above. I'm hoping to discuss the above with Karel at the Februrary ProRider day I've booked. Can't wait!

Agreed. Just touching my back brake a little is helping me hugely in corners, when needed.

And also didn't see any plods myself, but believe Stoney saw one down near Kaitoke (not even going to bother trying to spell that right.).

Davebullet - I'm sure you'll find Karols course very good for this. As I mentioned, am still thinking about heading along for my 3rd one. Her and all her trainers are very helpful with everyones individual needs.

Nah it was a sports bike. I think one of our pack, I am no angel on the road but overtaking round bends on the hill is dangerous, he had no idea what i was going to do and I wasn't expecting to see him so bloody close to me on that right hander. I did see a harley rider wearing a german army style helmet tryin to look tough, apparently he had a bit of an altercation (mid ride) with Andrew, might have been the same guy as you saw.

Yeah! TCWNR has moved back to being a racetrack. A number of regular Wed night riders have disappeared due to the antics of one or two individuals.
Maybe time for a re-evaluation and decide if I want to continue to put myself into those kind of situations.

I have KP he needs to stay in a wheel track to keep the stagger...he missed the lead bike under brakes by less than an inch, Kelly thought they were gonna pile up.

But if it was not him on the way home, sorry for pointing the finger.

I seriously doubt it was me, Kenny was behind me all the way home and I never passed any other bikes heading home.

EDIT: After reading Johns response (missed before) I see it cant have been my SD, or Katies mate with the sporty. Still I am starting to re think the ride brief situation, just to remind people to stay staggered and leave the bike behind you an escape route.

I also don't think it was your mate Katie. And as Brent has already said, I followed him all the way from the Royal to his house and we never passed any bikes.

However, When we first left the duck pond and pulled onto SH2, someone immediately popped a wheelie on the inside of a line of cages. And whilst it was impressive, a 250 mtr wheelie alongside cages, when there are another 20 odd bikes behind, puts undue attention to the group. I also had a couple of riders go passed me on the hill in what I would consider was too close for comfort. Going over the hill on the 500 for the first time in a long time, I was setting myself up to go passed cages only to find I was having to pull back in due to bigger bikes being impatient and blasting past.

Whilst I enjoy riding in a group and enjoy the company, I am not prepared to put myself at risk because of 1 or 2 others who are not respecting the others in the group.

yeah seems to happen every now and then, we have a few issues when riders forget where in the pack they should be riding. Police/radar/ambulance fodder at the front, cruisy'er (?) riders bit further back. Will stick my hand up and say that I shouldn't have been near the back at the start of the hill, and may have been a bit peeved with aforementioned random Harley, consequently did a bit more passing than normally would have.

Apologies if I put the willy's up anyone  :innocent:

The erratic rider is, the orange / black suzuki corolla without lowers that is normally parked on the footpath, one of the fringe riders that joins the ride at UH.

Hawkeye you are displaying the attitude of the typical knob, that is the problem on a Wednesday night.
You are there riding an unfamiliar bike so rethink your place in the pecking order and you will not get passed.
Why should every rider follow "you" as you wobble and weave over the hill on an unfamiliar bike.

I know you will poo poo the idea of pecking order, but this simple shuffle is seamlessly performed on a "Thursday night"
We understand our abilities and once in order seldom is there a bike on bike pass going over the hill.

All the Wednesday night riders need to do is think about who is riding around you when you arrive at the destination.
Simply set out, in this same order. You will be amongst riders of similar ability and unlikely to get caught up in a shuffle on the hill.
Unfamiliar bike drop back a few places until you are comfortable... too hard it would seem.
If you leave early on the return leg and another rider catches you up, simply be courteous move to the left of the lane,
momentously slow a little and simply let them file thru. Fark is this too hard ! seemingly for some it is.

We all come together for riding enjoyment, with different riding and cornering abilities.
These do not need to be hindered in a group ride situation, if simple ability and experiance are applied to the ride order.

Stain,
I have no issues with bikes passing me on the hill. It's how they do it. And whilst they may be comfortable in close passing manouvers, they need to think of the other riders. Twice on Wed night, I was set up to pass. But as I was about to go, faster riders cut me up and forced me to hit the brakes and pull left.

I've ridden with the Wed ride enough to know my own capabilities and where I fit in the group. and I'm quite happy to move to the left when faster bikes come up behind.
We all want to have fun out there. I just want to know that any incidents I have are my own doing not because one or two not so regular riders think they need to show how big their balls are. That only leads to mayhem.

It isn't a race track and there are no prizes for getting there first. (but it's a long :wait: at the bar if your last ).

And it was not so much an unfamiliar bike. I use the CB for commuting most day's so ride it regular. More a lack of the acceleration of the CB compared to the Katana to get passed things. So I needed to plan that little bit longer before passing.

Interesting read !

The cornering issues some of ya are having (preferring left over right) sure we all have our prefferences but am wondering how many have measured swing arm pivot bolt to rear axle bolt to get that dead true and then check wheel allignment ? Can make a difference !
Doesn't apply to your bike of course Dave lol single sided and all, but your pitching under brakes would be a worry, ya prob know, but thats the wheel base shortening under brakes and when ya release it extends again making ya run wide, unless your hard on the brakes i'm thinkin ya front may be a bit soft and perhaps rebounding too quick if its causing ya to move off line that much ?
Sounds like a good opportunity for shaun Harris and Kerry Dukie to have a bit of a suspension day some time ???

As for the group riding and dodgy shit, Ya don't see me on em aye lol
Takes quite a few miles for a group to sort out how each individual rides, when they will hesitate , when you to know they won't, what position in the order each rider should place him/herself ! A group like you guys have where new riders are coming each week would be too scary for this old fella, have to stay miles away at the back for fear of runnin up some noobs arse or have him run up mine !
The social side of it all sounds fantastic but it just aint worth the effort, if i wanna swap paint with someone i'll go to the race track !

Although I am faster on the straights and highway than some back with me, I know that come the hill, if any of them are behind me, I move aside and let them through as soon as possible, knowing that I am going to be holding them up. My sentiments exactly Sinfull. When I ride with the regulars, I know who I want in front of me and who I'm happy to have behind. It's the unknowns that I'm concerned about.
There are also a number of the faster guys who are slow on the take off from the duckpond, as they know they will catch up easily. You know the ones I mean. the ones that take that last couple of drags on the ciggie whilst the group is already leaving. This however has an impact on the slower guy's as they end up getting passed on the hill.

Attitude of the typical knob, that is the problem on a Wednesday night.
Rethink your place in the pecking order and you will not get passed.
This simple shuffle is seamlessly performed on a "Thursday night"
We understand our abilities and once in order seldom is there a bike on bike pass going over the hill.

All the Wednesday night riders need to do is think about who is riding around you when you arrive at the destination.

Unfamiliar bike drop back a few places until you are comfortable... too hard it would seem.
If you leave early on the return leg and another rider catches you up, simply be courteous move to the left of the lane, momentously slow a little and simply let them file thru.

We all come together for riding enjoyment, with different riding and cornering abilities.
These do not need to be hindered in a group ride situation, if simple ability and experience are applied to the ride order.

here here....!!

And for the thursday ride as well going from someones last nights rant... but thats another story.

Its not a race, but if another bike is following too close, let them past.
We all have licences and all know the road rules, It is not an organised ride but only an organised meeting place, what happens after that, your all on your own.

Those people that dont come riding because of what happens in a group ride, shouldnt be riding at all, take the car, group rides are what you make of them.
I know some pretty amature riders that come on the group rides that have a ball of a time, and keep coming back for more.

Thursday riders make their own pecking order... ie you dont leave the duck pond first unless you plan to stay in that position.
As for the wednesday riders, you all know your own riding ability and the ability of your bike which is probably more than your riding ability so ride to your ability.

If someone does do something not to your liking have a word to them at the pub or wherever you end up or take note and dont ride by them again... its pretty simple
We are all there to have a good time so lets do that!!

I have no problem moving aside for faster bikes and I don't believe there is an issue with this ride either, for the most part it is incident free and I have a blast, just on this occasion I wasn't given the opportunity to move over and I want my attention on my cornering mid bend rather than who's trying to overtake me and will it cause an accident. As I say, this is an isolated incident which gave me the shits at the time, in hindsight I probably created waves here where they weren't necessary by ranting about it. As long as riders respect each other and egos don't stop people moving over it should run smoothly.

My main issue is constantly being held up by Bryce (stain) as he's so slow and doesn't want to move over for us more experienced riders, sort it out old man :msn-wink:

Agree with Matt entirely.

If you are holding someone up, move to the left. If you want to pass someone, do it cleanly and in a safe manner - as you would wish to be passed.

The FJ squid boat is a particularly useless piece of turd over the hill, so I stuck somewhere in the middle rather than try to run over my head and get in the way. Ah... the laptop in the rack pack wouldnt take too much punishment anyway.

Only concern that I had was the harley softcock who was quite aggro, but I guess that he had his own issues...

other than that, choose your own pace and ride to your own ability. You may happen to find a buddy who is riding at around the same pace, so go and enjoy that experience rather than trying to ride at a pace that is uncomfortable or unsafe for you.

It aint all about the KB wed and thurs night rides !! Or is that all you live for ?

I am well thank you !

Well i have to say, if you're thumpin this 50 over the hill in a similar manner to that you were the bike you had prior, i see no reason anyone would want to pass you. Unless they want to pass the next rider also, as mentioned above !

But i would suggest thinking about turning your mirrors in just once and ride the hill, see how you enjoy just riding, rather than watching who it is that wants to pass and who it is that's enjoying just following you lol (letting all the passers leave first of course)

Cheers for the advice Bill. Never really thought much about wheel alignment on motorcycles. Did some reading online on how to check alignment. Went out and checked my bike using the string method and the alignment was off 6mm between left and right on the front wheel making the front wheel 3mm off centre towards the left in relation to the back wheel. Have adjusted it and it's now within half a hair's breadth of being smack on centre. Will be interesting to see if I can feel the difference.

Not there tonight - have scored a free ticket to Nitro Circus.

Have a great ride. I hope it's clear over the other side of the hill for you. See you all next week. :wavey:
If by "clear", you pissing down with rain and cold, then yes, it was luvly and "clear". Riding down the other side of the hill on the way over, it was when as the cold water trickled passed my nut sack that I decided I really wasn't enjoy the ride.

I went back over the Coast because it looked like it was going to turn to crap on the Hill.

When we left Pram at 6:15 it was really hot but it was windy and cool, although dry, by the time I got back.

Was sitting at Nitro thinking I was missing out on a ride. Surprised about the weather since it was actually nice in Wellington for a change (normally the other way around).

The stunts were good. I must be getting old as Mrs. B and I agreed they were a bit repetitive and a smothered with bit too much american hype - but hey, that's what those shows are about. Kids enjoyed it.

Best stunts:
BMX Double front flip
Wheelchair back and front flips
Motocross Double back flip
Chilly bin jump

Not in Riversdale apparently :) Certainly becoming scarcer but once you've got them on the hook there's not a lot of fight in them. Fillets are recognisable because they're all identical and have the colour and texture of the sole of a corpses foot. HTH

Boy did Chris aka Carbonhead and I have a night to remember tonight

We arrived at the bottom of Paekakariki Hill and had just pulled onto the highway when a police station wagon pulled in front with its lights on and just crawled. We crawled behind thinking that it was some kind of moving block when the cop stopped and aggressively yelled at us to pull the bikes over
Well within a minute we have 3 cop cars and then the questions started
Turns out that 2 bikes had just been clocked doing 165+km southbound from Raumati straights and had done a runner

We said how we had been to Lower Hutt and then Rimutakas and were on our way home
One of the police asked if we could verify our story but really though we were telling porkies
I mentioned how we had just had our regos taken down at the duck pond tonight by another police car and how he could check with the lower hutt police to verify or call the manager at the Royal
Got to say that after I mentioned to the cop :Police:about been a bit aggressive when he pulled us over he then went on to say that he was going to knock us off the bikes using his station wagon had we not stopped
Shame how one policeman (middle aged and experienced) can alter you open view on the NZ Police

Hi Darryn

Did you get this Police officers Badge Number?
That is a SERIOUS breach of Police pusrsuit policy, they are required to pull you over from behind, as you explained he seemd to be making a rolling block

To even suggest he was going to knock you both off is a serious misconduct on his behalf
PM me if you can identify the officer involved, I will be meeting with the regional commander in the near future, and will raise this incident with him

Patrick, Scumdog and many 'decent' cops who post here on KB would be aghast at this treatment

I know Chris's riding style very well from numerous WNCR's. I just cant see him or anyone he rides with requiring such hefty tactics.

Thanks Brent. No numbers unfortunately... thought about it too late.

The nasty prick was quite adamant that we were going to get punted if we'd failed to stop but didn't actually say "Pull over driver" or anything. We just bimbled along behind him for 50 or 60 metres wondering WTF was going on and then he indicated left and pulled across in front of us and we all came to a halt. Then we get the hyper aggression with him reaching for some device on his belt.

Both officers talked about knocking motorcyclists off their machines.

We just rode off the end of the Paekark Hill and into a pursuit situation that had nothing to do with us.

They had no ID on the fleeing bikes and we were handy.

Professionals my arse.

same was done to a mate of mine Mike a couple of months back, disco lights come on behind him southbound near Railway goods sheds Paekakariki, no where safe to stop, puts on left indicator to acknowledge and carries on toward safe stopping area at disused BP site. Cop car pulls up parallel with bike and then moves left and nudges Mike's right foot. In Mikes opinion this could have ended very bad to a less experienced rider. Carried on and pulled into the old BP site. Cop get out and immediately starts abusing him claiming he was trying to do a runner. It is time these arseholes using intimidating driving manner were made aware of the vulnerability of innocent motorcyclists before serious injury occurs.

Surprised they let you video it - its not legal to record cops anymore is it ?

There are 3 states in the US where that is the case and a lot of debate. We have yet to get to that in god's own.

Thought it stemmed from covert cellphone recordings of Police in the course of their duty. Do you know if that is still legal ?

just saw todays news paper...

page A3 with pic of Katie pie in hospital with broken neck and back after crashing her new R6... :(

hope you get well :soon: Katie. we are all thinking of you.

like your comment in the paper. "it hasn’t put me off. I really want to find out what happened, so i can avoid it happening again. Biking is my life, i’ve met so many wonderful friends, i’d feel so empty if i wasn’t part of the scene."

This was for regular weekend outings over the hill, generally the old Gladstone/Pahitua Track/home run

Had lots of fun on them rides...............

Sounds like a good idea mate. Last year we used the Kapiti rides thread to organise the rides. Perhaps someone should start a dedicated weekend rides thread? Ridge runners is good but you have to know it's there to use it.

So, spread the word, LOL

We called it 'Ridge Runners' because we always left over the Rimutaka Hill
Had a few good rides too.

Quasi is focussing on the Kapiti rides, no reason we cant have all thos keen to do the Track/Rappa runs as members or even use the Wellington Group Rides facebook page to coordinate

Mind you...wont be doing too much riding till i get the KTM back with her sparkly new rims and new set of tyres...... the Gixxer really needs a 'birthday' before I doi many more miles on the poor old girl

Lastly, naughty Katie for putting on a tab at the Royal. Your friends have, and will continue to support you while you've taken a bit of a knock. The tab, while generous, was not needed. Just seeing you at the duck pond is enough acknowledgement that you appreciate it.

Haha, I don't! I'd just got stuck behind a car a couple of corners earlier while the group I was with managed to sneak past.

I was going nicely though and would have been wide open through that sweeper except I saw a bike pulled over so buttoned off, sat her up and was going to check he was alright.  :violin:

I did a similar thing. I was pretty much last as there was a small group of us which left the car park late and saw the 'broken down biker'. Good spot to film though.
