Right.... I has interweb.... a bottle of Bundie and some catching up to do  Lets see how far I get before my nomad connection finishes...
Here I am in Albany sending my waiting for the new bike....
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0195.jpg
So, we picked up the new ride, a later model GS1200, with the front wheel off our old one on it  and set sale for Esperance, 477k's away and it was after lunch, time to press on...:ride:
We met this little fellah on the way, he wasn't happy about being shifted of the road
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0212.jpg
Anyway, we got to esperance by early evening and had a brew up while deciding where to sleep, we ended up at a campground where a little haggling was needed to get the price down to something acceptable:msn-wink:
Next day we made our way to Belladonia, via Norseman
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0217.jpg
Thay grow a lot of wheat around these parts

There is some salt lakes on the way, I was tempted to try the GS on it, dont tell MrsJ though:shutup:

There had ben a big H.O.G. convention on in Margaret River so we have been leapfroging Harleys all the way east, theyre not a bad bunch once you getem talking, even getting a few waves and nods now :eek5:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0271.jpg

After lots of straight roads and very few corner, a $4.50 trumpet at Cocklebiddy and a $5.00 chocolate milk at Nullabore roadhouse.
We went to see some Bundda (?) cliffs, quite impressive
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0399.jpg

Jatz,
you and the missus left my place and saw the south of the state at the right time. A fire swept through the Margaret River area and destroyed 39 homes and thousands of acres of bush. But it's all O.K. because even though the high temperatures and the high winds were predicted the D.E.C. (Department of Environment and Conservation) went ahead with their CONTROLLED BURN anyway.
Sorry to read that you had bike trouble and hit some wet weather but once you get home to NZ it will all be part of the adventure and I hope you look back fondly on your Aussie trip. At least you would have been happy in the knowledge that your crazy mates were looking after your place while you were over here.

No, it's lowered because when I step off the curb my arse hits the footpath. Both bikes had specially made links, 15mm longer lowereing them 70mm so that when I sit on them my feet reach the ground comfortably.

Back....
I;ll whistle through the next few days instead of a day by day thing just incase anyones getting bored.
We left Smokey bay and sort of started going down the Eyre Peninsular
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0490-1.jpg
, we went past some rocks that needed a closer look
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0483-1.jpg
We decided to give the rest of the peninsular a miss as it would just be another xtra long day and the forcast was for more wind, I'd been knocked around by a crosswind most of the previous day. We took a short cut and ended up here, at a little place called Kimba
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0489-1.jpg
Carried on a bit and came to a town called " IronKnob" and with a name like that it would be rude to ride past  A very harsh environment to live in.
One of the locals
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0496-1.jpg
There is an Iron mine there and very little else, it was one of the most depressing towns I've ever been into :eek5:
But they had this beauty on display
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0497.jpg

We left Mt Remarkable N.P. under increasingly grey skies and made our way towards Adelaide via Gladstone and Clare valley.Quite nice doing absolutely no research about the area your going through, makes ita nice surprise.Who knew it was a wine growing region ? of course we had to stop for a tasting  and to support the local industry.
There's no interesting pics of the palce, it was just very scenic, even in the rain and drizzle
Anyhoooo we got to Adelaide without anythig interesting happening, where I had some new pads put on the rear of the bike (from Pitmans yamaha, installed free of charge :woohoo: ) and MrsJ needed some new gloves as she'd lost one of hers while reading the map.
Adelaide was alright....lots of old houses
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0537.jpg
The next day we bailed towards Mt Gambier. We went through Hahndorf and then found some really nice scenic twistie stuff between there and Strathalbyn, I couldn't stop grinning :D using 2nd and 3rd gear for a change, then headed for Wellington :shit: and the ferry
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0561.jpg
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0567.jpg
After that we grabbed another short cut
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0573.jpg
and rode through Keith and Struan and made camp at Bool Lagoon in a cons. area just south of Naracoorte

There's a free tourist bus that leaves every half hour I think from outside the museum n the south side of the river thats not bad, and a ride on the free circle tourist tram is worth a go too, and Ned Kellys armour is in another place, I think it was the state library or something.

Signing in at Bool Lagoon just south of Naracoorte. It cost $5.50 for the bike and $10.00 for the 2 of us to camp for a night in National parks/Cons area's, still about half the cost of an unpowered tent site at a campground. I struggled for a bit with the idea of paying just to enter a N.P. but the money is put to good use so it wasn't so bad.

We'll be going back maybe late next year or early 2013, hopefully, and leaving from Sydney. Do some off seal stuff and go to Alice springs, then down to Adelaide and then to either Melbourne or back to Sydney. It would be a good trip from Sydney to the Alice. You can follow reasonable dirt roads all the way then drop down to Port Perie in South Oz and track across the country back to Sydney from there. Or, from the Alice you could go north to Darwin then back down to Three Ways and run across to Mt Isa and Queensland then back to Sydney. I think you would enjoy the second option. It's more outback Australia. But you have a year or so to work it out.
Can't wait for the 'Parcel'. I'm like a kid waiting for a birthday.

I went up the little track on Island pass

Pop the seat off and pull the snorkel out of the top of the airbox, it just clips in. That alone makes quite a difference. Ideally the carb needle should be shimmed or moved down a clip as the bike will run a bit leaner but mine ran fine without doing that.

At no stage today did I feel I needed more power, it overtook cars with ease, spun the rear exiting corners on the gravel, and would go fast enough to get a good fine if caught :innocent: or maybe I just ride like a nana. After a pleasant night with Clint/Rosie we made our way North a bit more, ignoring the GPS again we made our way to Tauranga where some running repairs were needed on the little bike.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DSCN1033.jpg
We had the work done at this place
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/North%20Island%20tour%20%202012/DSCN1034.jpg
Top service and a reeally good price too :msn-wink::niceone: If your in the distict and need something givem a call
More navigating using the wind and a bit of intuition and we were in Waihi beach, that wasn't part of the plan
we made our way to Whitianga via some nice twisty seal roads, I was surprised there weren't more bikes on it as it's a gem of a road, maybe they don't know about it
ANyhooo, grabbed some food in Whitianga and headed for Coromandel town via the "309" then over the Kennedy bay rd to our campsite at Waikawau bay
Some pics from this leg of the Journey...
Tuateawa bay ?

It was a bit after 4 when we got there and traffic was just building up, we ran into it about Mt Wellington , Had a go at laneplitting, but you have to be a little mental to do that :doobey: although mrs J was getting a little hooney at times.

Welllll.... After doing family stuff, picking up a piece of stuff for the Emporium and getting a little wobbly  at .chris's place (just aswell we walked over), we had the long trek back south...
We bypassed Hamilton so nothing much interesting happened until my "intuition" took us down the wrong road. We were supposed to turn down road 40 at Mangatupoto but I turned into Kamaroa rd, and ended up here

Weird little place, the GPS said there was lots of roads, but there were very few, the same with a couple of other towns we passed through, lots of roads shown but nothing but paddocks and redundant street signs.
Right...We popped out on the Forgotten World h/way, which was part of the plan, but I couldn't get to Stratford on what gas I had, so we turned left and headed for Taumranui and fuel.
After fuel and a ride through National Park we headed for Raetihi, and a ride to Pipiriki and the Wanganui River rd.Thanks to .chris for the recomendation :niceone:

It was a nice way to get to Wanganui. We grabbed a cabin and a feed and were enjoying a nice Cab Merlot when some rough biker and his old lady :o rocked up and started yakking. Turns out it was BigCol from here on K.B. We organised to have breakky with them and hook up for the ride down to Wellington
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/North%20Island%20tour%20%202012/DSCN1143.jpg
The Camera battery went dead after this pic so that's all the pics for this trip.
Any way... we had a nice breakky and made our way to BigCol's in Waikanae for a brew, after a chat we had just enough time to make it to the ferry so long as we didn't get stuck in traffic or at lights.
Another boring boat ride except for the company, Mr and Mrs Umopom.
We rode home via Spring Creek as Mrs J's gear lever was starting to get a bit wobbley again, shouldn't have worried about that, as her carb needle gave up just before Okaramio, I think it was a new record for pulling the carb apart and sorting it before we rode to Nordie's and a bit of food/coffee.
Hope you'se enjoyed the read as much as we enjoyed the trip :niceone:

I went in & dropped off some brownie & old motorcycle mags to the poor old fella today.
He was looking not too bad sitting up in bed although moving caused him quite a bit of discomfort. Obviously Ali & I made the most of this by tickling him until he cried - then we slapped him around for being a crybaby.
For those interested in what happened - he was riding along the Molesworth after Isolated Flat & went around a left hand corner with a bank on the RHS.
Next thing he woke up with birdes whistling around his head not knowing what happened. His front tyre was flat so unsure if that was the cause or effect. A guy stopped to help & called the ranger. After Jatz passed out getting into the rangers ute a chopper was called as they wanted a specialist paramedic there.
Chopper ride & cut off trousers (oooowwww commando are we sir?) xrays & cat scans, he sits in bed with a broken piece of hip, deep bruising around the shoulders, ribs, back etc. they aren't gonna put him in a cast or anything.
He's a hard man who seems to think he will be riding with Eddie (Mwahahahaha:shutup:) soon. He actually wanted to ride out if some of the helpers would change his front tyre for him:facepalm:
I passed on your guyses regards. As the Jatz's are people of few words i thought i'd pass on the main details & he can fill youse in with the other stuff.
Bike is still in Molesworth at the Homestead ready for the first people to submit a tender for it's release & pay the hefty fines he incurred along the way.

Happy to be home again although a little sore around the torso and a fractured socket on my right hip  I still don't know for sure what happened (but the bike has a flat front tyre) I was riding well, not fast, and i like to think smoothly :innocent: .....Nek Minute :gob: I woke up with some guy telling me i'd just fallen off my bike and no recollection of much past Isolated saddle.
I spent a pleasant couple of hours in the company of a family from Chch who made me as comfortable as possible, before the ranger showed up and called the Helicopter.
The chopper medic cut my almost new rally X pants to ribbons  awell as other articles of clothing, I wouldn't let him near my jacket, prefering to wriggle out of that instead. They put me on a stretcher type thing with a brace on my neck, suspected spinal injuries, and flew me to hospital.
I spent the next couple of days being looked after very well by the nurses at Nelson Hospital, who do an outstanding job :sunny:

Well.... I have a little spare time on my hands these days so thought I may update this thread with a brief RR from the other weekend
Anyway... It had been a while since I'd been on a good ride, so hatched a plan to go for a pootle through Molesworth and then Lewis pass and down to Greymouth, then home via Westport. A pretty good ride round the block I thought
After an early start from home and fuel in Nelson it was still dark heading through the Whangamoa/Rai area
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Molesworth%20incident/DSCN1194.jpg
Still, it means less traffic on the fun bits :Punk:
After a stunning sunrise over the vines just as I got to the Waiau river.
I sent MrsJ a txt to let her know where I was....more fuel in Blenheim:facepalm: (damn little DR tanks) and a cruisey ride over Taylors pass
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Molesworth%20incident/DSCN1200.jpg
I think I may have mentioned how much I like this time of day before <_< Anyway...Over Taylors and the bike is going well, good tunes on the i-pod, it was a good day to be alive and I was feelin pretty good, even waved to the camera :wavey:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Molesworth%20incident/DSCN1205.jpg
A breif stop for a quick "been there, done that" pic
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Molesworth%20incident/DSCN1210.jpg
and I was back on the bike and away, past the Molesworth homestead and rangers hut and it was just getting better.
Isolated flat
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Molesworth%20incident/DSCN1213.jpg
Across the flat, over the saddle, around a few more corners and then.....
I wake up to some guy telling me I've fallen off me bike, a bit of pain and some rocks digging into my back, not tooo bad considering
Another family from Christchurch arrive on the scene and offer assistance, make a cuppa and and make me comfortable.Thats not their campervan, that was somebody else who stopped and offered assistance.

Absolutely awesome people who went out of their way to help. I'm a little hazy on the exact order of things here, but will make an educated guess, besides, I was there and you guys weren't
I think guy #1 went and got the ranger from Acheron accom house while Sue, Brook, Rory and I chilled out, enjoying the scenery (hope you don't mind I used your names guys) ignore the chopper in this pic and focus on the scenery, the pic is a little out of order, chronologically
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Molesworth%20incident/landed.jpg
The ranger showed up and I tried to get into his wagon for a ride to Hamner, that wasn't gunna happen :weep: so a ride out was called from Nelson.
Here they come now...
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Molesworth%20incident/DSCN1216.jpg
Was a good sound to hear
And see :doctor:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Molesworth%20incident/DSCN1219.jpg
After being half undressed  ( I managed to wriggle out of the jacket to save it from the same fate as the pants) I was given some stuff to "keep me comfy" and put on a plank of wood with a toilet bowl round my neck, then bundled into my ride.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Molesworth%20incident/inhelicopter.jpg
Would've been a stunning ride out but I wasn't in a position to sight see. Anyway, I ended up spending a couple of days in Nelson hospital with a fractured hip and something wrong with my left shoulder and side, still hurts to cough and sneezing usually end up with a wee yelp :shit:
What caused the off I hear you ask... Well I think it was this
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Molesworth%20incident/DSCN1226.jpg
My riding had been smooth and controled, no OH SHIT moments, keeping the speed down in double digits, drinking water regularly, and generally being cruisey :ride:
More to follow..

While I've a bit of time for navel gazing and contemplation I've had some thoughts (scarey I know )
Although I was in contact with Mrs J to let her know where I was through out the day, txt from Blenheim at 7:45, she was expecting another from Hanmer before lunch,By the time she would've raised the alarm I would have been crashed for a few hours.
I should probly have signed in at the rangers hut on the way in, usually I don't, in to much of a hurry, and signed out at the other end. If I had gone over a bank and off the road things could have been a lot different. I shall change this.
Also, If it had happened on a more remote track, like St James/Maling pass or even the Porika it could have been a long time to get things sorted.I will probly end up getting a small epirb to carry in future, also good for the boat :woohoo:
I find the people you meet when out riding are generally pretty good, I met a nice family from Chch (supplied some of the pics) and hope to keep in contact with them, so that is a positive
The nurses at Nelson Hospital were absolutely out standing, nothing was to much trouble and they keep a good eye on the patients, also the D.O.C. rangers were tops, they made sure Mrs J was informed of progress and kept up to date.
K.B. is a good tool for networking and getting things done. An inmate here, LoC,from Blenheim, was looking at this thread when the penny droped,. and he realised it was me in the Molesworth, he was able to pick up my bike from Acheron and deliver it to my door in Motueka, he was working not far from Acheron at the time, cheers fullah, I owe you one. :niceone: This wouldn't have happened had this thread been on another international forum, even though they have more relaxed rules regarding embedded images :innocent:
Also... while crutches may be fun when you grab ya mates for a quick lap round the yard they aren't much fun to live with full time, I have a new respect for those who must have them for life, and "Honey... can you grab my crutch  " is only funny once or twice
Despite the horror stories I've heard ACC have been very helpfull and proffesional, I even got some of my levy back already :woohoo: and the insurance company have been tops too, covering the helmet and clothing with no hesitation. :niceone:
that is all for now, almost nap time ...:wavey:

Possibly a pinch flat, although the holes are half way up the tube. I had 26psi in it though so it's unlikely (yes Nordie, I did check :innocent: ) Tyre is fine and the bike is now getting ridden to Nelson and back daily by the boy. A few scratches to hand gaurd/indicators and pannier rack is all

I was thinking about your accident today while I was ridng over to a job in Golden Bay.
Were you wearing any body armour under your jacket or on your hips?
I wear a pressure suit all the time & feel naked without it (tho this is only because I feel comfortable with it on & gives me psychologically a bit more confidence- I'm not becoming the ATGATT police as I believe in let those who ride decide) however I just have my work pants with a bit of soft padding on the knees.
I was wondering if you think padding on your hips could have helped a bit.

You shoulda called in, I have cookies and coffee :D
Body armour ... no, just whats already in the jacket/pants. The Rally X pants have no knee protection and only about 10mm of padding in the hips, I did have knee/shin guards on which I always ride with and I think my knees would have taken more of a pounding without them, one knee was swollen and bruised a bit, best $45 I ever spent on safety gear, they have taken a few knocks now.
I've looked at body armour often, but how much is too much for normal ADV riding, neck brace, body armour, what do you wear on hips/thighs ?

be a great "communal" buy for the NADS I reckon, seems to an outsider that you either ride together or one (and one only goes for a ride) less than a hundy in each and you're sorted!

While I've a bit of time for navel gazing and contemplation I've had some thoughts (scarey I know )
This sort of reflection is rather familiar to me. Thoughs of Epirb/PLB, great people out there who are willing to help a complete stranger, nurses being helpful, ACC not being an issue and KB a network of great people.
I got a PLB not long after my off. One of the most expensive things you hope you never have to use but we carry it everywhere now if we are going off the beaten track, walking, 4WD, bike etc. If you really need help and no cell reception then got to be the way to go (or have a spot whatever takes your fancy).
Bloody glad you didn't have to take a ride on the old chopper (white). I'm 6'1" and they had to take the dash out to fit me in. Even then I had my toes curled up as much as my boots would allow. With your bit of extra height they may have had to remove some of you to fit you in!
Cheers R

Exactly... The pads in the jacket/pants have been adequate for all the silly little low speed offs over the years  However when crashing at "higher" speeds they were lacking, mind you I was knocked out so don't have details on how far I travelled down the road on my arse/back/side/legs/head

Sorry for the pic quality, there was a finger print on the lense I didn't see till I got home
After doing 60% of the housework and feeling like a brew I decided to go out for one. Why not, the sun was shining the birds were singing and I woke feeling remarkably spritely :D
I knew just the place...
It was such a nice day and the mp3 was playing some good tunes even the other traffic didn't upset me going over Takaka hill
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Cobb%204%20coffee/DSCN1261.gif
Just tuck in behind and wait for a sensible passing spot
Down the other side and hang a left at the hall, then make my way towards the Cobb power station. It's quite a narrow little road where you wouldn't want to get things wrong
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Cobb%204%20coffee/DSCN1262.gif
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Cobb%204%20coffee/DSCN1283.gif
I carried on past the power station to see how a little bit of gravel would feel under the wheels :niceone: A couple of k's up the road I was waved down by a guy who told me he'd put his truck over the bank a bit, and could I give him a lift back to the power station. "No worries cobber, but I broke a footpeg when I dicked off a couple of weeks ago" says I, unfazed he hopped on and we rode back to the station...slowly
After dropping him off to use the phone there I carried on back up the gravel, came round a corner and saw his truck
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Cobb%204%20coffee/DSCN1268.gif
Full of gravel too
Carrying on I came to where they'd been laying fresh gravel on the road, have I told you how much I hate trailwings in gravel  Made for a fairly slow trip to the top of the ridge
By this stage I's ready for that coffee :headbang:

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Cobb%204%20coffee/DSCN1270.gif
Sufficiently refreshed I went for a quick spin down the airstrip
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Cobb%204%20coffee/DSCN1279.gif
And back
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Cobb%204%20coffee/DSCN1280.gif
Then headed for home and 40% more housework. On the way out I stopped to yak to the truck driver who was busy with a shovel unloading his truck  He warned me there was a loader on it's way in to pull him out. I said goodbye and carried on, being careful and riding defensively (slowly) :D .Met the loader as I was going round a left hand bend almost riding in the ditch, I was confronted by a bucket the size of our dining room table on my side of the road :gob: the driver smiled down at me, I grinned at him (and thought about changing dacks) and we carried on.
Just the ride back out to the main rd and back over the hill left, nothing exciting happened so here's a couple of scenic shots

Strictly speaking I shouldn't really be riding. But I have been feeling pretty good and I think things are healing up well. Walking without sticks and riding the pushy a few k's a day, also taking supplements from O2B has probably made a difference :sunny:

Seeing as how I had a bit of spare time and some goodies had turned up for the 650, I figured it'd be rude not to put them in/on the bike yesterday. :D
Starting with lowered footpegs...
Gather the tools for the job
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR650%20pics/DSCN1302.gif
Quite a difference in height
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR650%20pics/DSCN1295.gif
and length
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR650%20pics/DSCN1296.gif
I didn't shorten the brake rod, but there's no more adjustment so it'll have to do  and the lever is level with the footpeg. I wonder how they'll feel without the rubber dampers
Next was the heavier weight spring...
After a quick phone call to Nordie :niceone: to find out the easiest way of getting the shock out I set about removing the shock.
Here it is
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR650%20pics/DSCN1308.gif
Ooooo look, a hole
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR650%20pics/DSCN1309.gif
Take a measurement to give me something to aim for when putting it all back together
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR650%20pics/DSCN1311.gif
It looked to me like the large flat washer and collar were one piece  so I whipped the end off the shaft  won't make that mistake again
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR650%20pics/DSCN1312.gif
could've saved my self a bit of work there.
After a quick trip to town to replenish locktite supplies and a stop at the bike shop for a chinwag, and to pick up some fork oil, picked up a cheeep tyre too  I came home and put it all back together
Here tiz... shiny aye
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR650%20pics/DSCN1313.gif
The airbox was easy to get back in compared to the Big, single carbs make life easier
And here it is ready to go  after I take the bike lift away
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR650%20pics/DSCN1315.gif
Next up is some spacers for the front forks
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR650%20pics/DSCN1319.gif
and some 20w fork oil
Anybody got a syringe for measuring the oil level or a sure fire way of getting it right without being too technical, I'm a fairly low tech kinda guy (see the hammer in the pic above :D )

geez thats a serious spacer, good luck getting the fork caps back in with that.
I taped a longish bit of rubber hose to a long screwdriver, marked 165mm on the hose then lowered it down the fork to the mark. Once in place I sucked on the other end to see if any fluid came out.
Obviously I had enough hose to ensure any oil that did come out didn't end up being swallowed.

go to the local vet, (your due for your shots anyhow), and get a large syringe.
Kite frame, (carbon tube), or a straw for the height setter.
A bit of rubber tube to join them together, and hey presto, a KLR riders fork oil height setter upper.
Pig riders have a more technical type, and DR riders just scrounge what they need.

Yebut... vet's have the same reputation as dentists ($$$$$), I'll give them a try though, a big F.off syringe is handy to have in the tool box, Other wise I remembered I have a few brass hosetails and some clear hose, I'll rig something up with a squeezy bottle :D Or reverse install an old scott oiler thats lurking in the shed :weird:
I just use a baby's bottle..
Where in hell would I get a baby's bottle from ? Child #1 turned 21 yesterday so it's been a while since we needed one of them :msn-wink: Good tip though fullah

I'll keep the hose/screwdriver trick as plan B :niceone:
The spacer is the same size as the one the mechanic at the local shop used when he sorted a 650 to go to the Burt the other year. He also recommended the 20w oil, and he's about the same size as me so I'll go with his recommendation.
He did say the caps would be a bit hard to get on, but with the forks out I should be able to get a decent/straight downward pressure to get the thread started

To measure my fork oil height I just use a torch and something long (piece of kindling last time) with a mark 160mm from one end. Put your thumb on the mark and lower the kindling inside the fork and use the folowing 3 options:
If your thumb contacts the top of the fork before the kindling touches the oil then add oil.
If the kindling touches the oil before your thumb contacts the top of the fork then remove oil.
If your thumb contacts the top of the fork at the same time as the kindling touches the oil then job done.

It's o.k. I splashed out $5 and got a big syringe from the vet. I know it was a bit extravagant, but no expense was spared damit :D may have a go at the job 2morrow.

I bought one of those push-down soap dispenser type pumpy things with a longish tube that screw on a plastic bottle from mega.
I just put a mark on the side of the tube and pumped it out , worked good
Might have been less than the big budget syringe, round the $4 mark I think.

When I put my new springs in, I did it at the bike shop, just in case.
I over filled them. I would say that I sucked the excess out with a length of fuel hose. But that would leave me open to ridicule and jokes.

Well...it's been a wee while since the tread had an update  and seeing as how I needed a pair of new gloves (the gardening gloves weren't really cutting it). A trip to see a shop in Tauranga was needed. I made a couple of calls and e-mails to make sure they had the right size, then booked flight and ferry tickets
You'll have to excuse the picture quality as I only had my phone, and the subject matter may get a little tedious
Here's the new gloves...
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000050-1.gif
Flaaaash aye , you'll notice the BMW symbol on them ?
While I was at the shop I also picked up this... Just doing my bit for the economy
The pic was taken in Taupo as I headed south
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000021.gif
After lunch and a quick scan of the map I headed towards Rangataiki pub with a short detour up Taharua rd. and Clements Mill rd, just to see what was there
This was there
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000027.gif
And this...
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000029.gif
I didn't go right to the end as I was sort of saving fuel, you never know what might happen
I wobbled my way back out and headed for the Rangataiki pub and the chance to meet up with some other like minded people doing the MMMMM, .chris was already there and paturoa arrived soon after so we settled in  to wait for some others to arrive.
After a few beers, a huge feed and some idle chit chat, where I was talked into joining the crew for the ride through the forest to Minginui, I retired to my mattress on the floor of the dining room, leaving the rugby heads to watch some sport.
Early next morning, after another jumbo meal :2thumbsup
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000031.gif
I wandered out to the bike
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000032.gif
It was a little frosty
After some more people arrived and a wee speech from Clint640 we set off to ride through the forest, it wasn't to bad, with not much ice/frost around. Met some more people at the turn off, it was turning into quite a large group :eek5:.

I only took 1 pic going through the forest, I was too busy getting to grips with the big bike (nervous as fcuk :D ) I'm still upset and coming to terms with the fact I got smoked/overtaken by a chick on a DR200 :weep:
Anyway....here's the 1 pic
Rosie (nice hi viz ;) ) and Box a bits (?)
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000036.gif
Part way through the group split up, with some taking on the challenge section, I did one of those once and wasn't keen on repeating it on the new bike :baby:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000041.gif
the rest headed through the forest to Minginui and the Waikerimoana rd. I split off here to fuel up in Murapara as the fuel light had been on for a wee while.

I bypassed Taupo and had lunch in Turangi
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000043.gif
Still getting over the big brekky from the morning
I've never ridden down the Dessert rd before so carried on h/way 1, now I know why  was still a little cool
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000044.gif
I poked the front wheel up a couple of side tracks to relieve the boredom
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000055.gif
I didn't go tooo far as it was slippery as a slippery thing and I didn't want to get out of my depth. I also discovered that despite the bike weighing more than 200 kg it's very easy to pick up
I carried on down h/way 1 and picked up a wee something for Mrs J for being a good sport :D The rest of the days just me riding and being alone with my thoughts, so I won't bore you with that, besides.... you wouldn't understand
Another day ends.....
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000066.gif
Except for another food shot, 3 course meal, :2thumbsup
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000068.gif

The bikes introduce themselves...
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000071.gif
Queen Charlotte drive was crap with grit, damp roads and old slips :eek5: but still scenic
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_0000752.gif
A brief stop at Slip inn in Havelock for some chowder
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Northern%20Ride%20out%20July%202012/WP_000079.gif
And then over the Wangamoas, more :zzzz: although Mrs J did waggle her finger at me when I got a little sideways on a wet bend, and then home before the rain :2thumbsup
That is all really.....

You didn't really fill in how you find the bike. Ergos? power, offroadability - the seat ( I actully know the answer to that one-ouch) compared to the DR & Big etc how does it compare?
Most importantly- when can I ride it?:innocent:

Ergos ? Good, maybe some small bar risers, but that's all.
Power ? I think this...:headbang: sums it up :D F.I. will take some getting used to but there is a fix available for the snatchiness, read about it on ADV rider. Or I could learn to ride proper.
Offroad ability ? I think the rider will be the limiting factor there, however there is always room for improvement on the suspension :D
Seat ?... I was kinda sore (hip and arse) after our ride the other weekend and that was only 200k, I could've carried on to Bluff on the 800 today :2thumbsup
Compared to the 650 and the 750 ? The 750 ergos fit me well and I like the power delivery, it's just old :weep: The 650 is a good bike, it did everything and was reliable, it just didn't "fit" and there's no denying they're about as exciting as a plate of boiled cabbage.
You ride it ? You can have a ride when you come and put that new power socket in the shed.

No... not yet, it was pissin down today. He did hop on it last night and the phrase "cheshire cat" springs to mind :D

Wondered who had scored that bike, the800 is the first bike I go for in the garage. I am surprised the snappynish hasnt been sorted.
The shop run an updated mapping program an it seemed to smooth out the power delivery. Maybe I just got used it. 1st gear is rather low on the technical stuff. Congragulations those bikes are so much fun you will enjoy the bejesus out of it.
