Seeing as how this is a format I can understand, and I can't get my head around this Blog shit, and the tour report thread won't let me embed images , I will put my stuff in here..... to be updated as and when required.
What should follow is a thread with pics of our bikes with some scenery behind them, and storys of our travels around Nelson, N.Z; and possibly further afeild for those who are interested.

Labour weekend coming up.... and it has sorta become tradition to go and watch a bit of street racing in Greymouth, and this year was no different.
I started prep the weekend before (which is very unusuall for me) by knocking up some pannier racks for MrsJatz
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0187.jpg
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0185.jpg
then it was a long wait for sturday to roll around, but roll around it did and it was a teary :bye: to the kids (yeah right) and we were away.
First bit of gravel for the weekend was the Dry weather road from Tapawera through to Glenhope.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0195.jpg
then it was just a gentle pootle to Murch for a pie, thought.... Nah the bikes don't need gas should be able to get to Reefton on one tank
MrsJatz ran out about Cronadun, at 252k's :shit: I got 300 out of it last time. but she still had a bit on the other side of the tank...
Got to Reefton without any more dramas where we met up with MyGSXF and her mate Fred. Had a bit of lunch at cafe saddlebag :) and we carried on towards Nelson creek, and Lake Hotchstetter

I had the GPS route from CooneyR's website so it should be a piece of cake to find the lake, we tried a couple of years ago in the 4wd and phucked the paintwork mirrors and aeriel, this time was gonna be different.
Nice forestry roads heading in to the lake, nut I didn't take any pics, we found this dam thing

Today....
The day started badly when I couldn't sleep due to some bruises from a wee spill I had yesterday , on the Kaiterie/Marahau rd
I got up early and headed for Rai valley where I was going to meet Transalper for a wee ride out to Elmslie bay
I arrived an hour and a half early  so had a coffee, sausage roll, sleep, and read of the fishing paper.... in that order
Things were looking good though on the ride out...
Here we are just past Okiwi bay, looking into Squally cove.Looks like a nice day eh

Here's T.A. just after the turnoff to Elaine bay
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0463.jpg
Started to get a bit misty just befor we came out of the bush onto the farmland, then it really came in :shit:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0466.jpg
T.A. is only about 20 mtrs in front there
Luckily we rode down out of it towards French Pass
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0467.jpg
A quick spell at Elmslie bay and it was off to Cafe Underground :woohoo: more fog, wind and dust.
Here we are leavin. I have circled the cafe for those who don't know where it is

Go through the saddle and head down towards Seymore / Herring creek

Then it was riding down the river bed towards the Clarence river.
there was some fords
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10258.jpg

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0058.jpg
and there was a locked gate  ah well, it happens, so we backtracked to the intersection where we caught up with cromagnon :wavey: and friend. They headed off to look at the locked gate  while we carried on down the creek towards the Clarence.

Great RR. So I guess they've locked the gate so you can't see the slip. Pity you didn't walk as it's only upthe top of the next hill.
Isn't it funny the difference in environments between Golden Bay/ West coast to Marlborough even tho its only a few hours ride apart. Best of both worlds - wet & wild & dry & dusty:sunny:

The locked gate is on the hill overlooking Quail flat shearers quaters. We followed the stream down from where the map board is and rode across some shingle beds, to by pass the hill. From where we camped you could see the slip, kinda big aye.
For other times of the year permission to get in should be easyish to get from D.O.C. in Renwick, acording to the guy on the gate, BUT you must also get permission from the lease holder, which also should be o.k., so long as it's not calving/lambing/fire risk time of the year.I cant remember his name just now, I'm sure D.O.C. would help out with that

No....
But there is a bit of mucking around to get a 350 tank to fit a 250. We have a spare 350 tank and seat. There was quite a bit of dicking about to make them fit the 250 with only a small gain in capacity.

Does anyone know how much modification is required to fit a dr650 tank to a dr250?
Just to continue the thread jack - ADVGD has a Acerbis XR400 tank on his DRZ250 and it looks like it fits really nicely (with some custom brackets).

This one nearly had me, but a bit of determination and recklesness saw me through
Hey James - I was up the Gowan Valley with work yesterday & was told someone had to be airlifted off the Porika recently, as a result of trying to get up there on a road bike.
While there I checked that last bit of East Bank Road but it was padlocked. I reckon it's probably a paper road so I'll persue this with the adjacent land owners.
I came out via the Braburn last night & yes, it's in great nick at the moment.

New years day, and The boy and I headed off on a mission, I wanted to do the Mackley river and Boy wanted to do Big river and Molesworth
I got hold of Monstaman and Trials rider (we'll call them Mm and Tr from here aye :niceone: ) so we had some company for the first day
Here's we are on the dry weather rd.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0044.jpg
a gentle pootle down to Iron bridge in the middle of the Buller gorge :ride:
and we waited.....
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0051.jpg
We could see where the river had been up to earlier in the week, musta had a bit of rain down here, I did take a pic but it's crap so I'll leave it out  anyway.... away we went heading for Denniston, via the scenic route :D a brief stop to...... I dunno..... stop
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0052.jpg
then down to the Mackley river
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0053.jpg after taking luggage and excess stuff accross and scouting the best route. it wasn't as bad as I thought
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0057.jpg sorry about the crap pic :(
through the river and we had to get around this.....
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0060-1.jpg
succesfully past and on we went to the next obstacle....
a quick looksee :shifty: and it was all go
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0069.jpg
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0072.jpg
The lovely lady in the bottom right of the pic is Mrs Tr, she was pillioning through :shit:
Then the long climb up, up, up, up
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0074.jpg
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0077-1.jpg
This bit turned put to be the worst bit, very loose and rocky..... lots of pushing and shoving, wheelspin, revving engine and burning clutch and the Big was up :D
Tr rode most of the way up :not: with only a couple of helping hands in places (can see the benefits of trials riding when it comes to this stuff) (and Mrs Tr walked this bit to take photos) Mm did likewise and I wont mention anything about any falling over , the 250 coulda done with a bit more weight.
View from the top...

The Boy showing off
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0090.jpg
Anyway.... we got to Denniston, which has changed a bit since I was last there  and down to Westport for lunch. Then back to Reefton wher we had to sort out some digs for the night and caught up with Mm and Tr for a quick squirt into Big river.
Went up the zig zag track to a look out....
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0105.jpg
then flew into Big river, well Tr and Mm flew, me and the Boy pootled  so I havn't got hardly any pics.
Here's the Boy showin off again.

day 2 to follow......

Over the Lewis and onto dry roads
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0116-1.jpg
Through Hanmer, get a bit of fuel for the Boy and over Jollies into the Molesworth
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0119-1.jpg
A little bit of excitment....

And a little bit of ingenuity
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0125-1.jpg

So yeap JATZ, Little JATZ, MM and Trials Rider with Mrs TR on board did the trip with nearly no damage (I bent my oil cooler) and JATZ ended up with a semi auto DR Big
What a great day we had, beautiful weather other than being 30 degs too hot pushing bikes up the hill :sweatdrop
I thought I would stop half way up for a rest and lay down ... so did the bike ... only in front of an audience eh
So other than the one snarly hill climb the rest was perfect and the panini and coffee at Westport was welcomed.
Saw the height of the water from the floods and Hawks Crag up to the hand railing which was 11 metres above normal flow height :shit:
Back to Reefton and into Big River and back, shagged at the end so we joined JATZ and Little JATZ for a VISA tea at the pub ... easy as!!.

Yes TR and Mrs TR are back now and yes we had an awesome trip through the Mackley to Denniston, it was my first two up adventure ride but with a nice sharp E07 on the rear and TKC80 on the front it was all good.
Anyway we meet team JATZ at the steel Bridge and after a quick hello we are off, the track had had a lot of rain so it was washed out in places and shingle heaped in other places, got through to the Mackley no worries, took our bags of and walked the river, probably 600mm at the deepest bit for us.
We all crossed the river OK and off again, the next creek was fine but the climb out and up the hill was like riding up a fresh shingle scree, it was f*&ken hard going to say the least, after a lot of swearing we all got to the top for a well earned drink and munchies.
Anyway I have attached pictures as they are worth a thousands words so I don't have to write anymore, A couple of pics from Big River too.

Yes it was fairly steep but the main issue was the fresh dump of lose boulders and ruts between 400mm and 1100mm deep from flooding, we were spitting stones everywhere and avoiding dropping bikes into a big ruts, especially JATZ DR750, it is a big bike, I am glad the last bike was the DR250 (nice and Light).

:
Yep MMMMM 2011 will be happening, be great to have a posse from the south up for that.
However if you wanted to organise a SIIOTN for summer I could probably organise a couple of days of more adventurous riding in this area for the group. Most of the harder tracks around here are just too snotty in the winter.

It would be rude not to take them through 42nd, Fishers, Old Whangamomona too, especially if it's in winter :devil2:

Hello again everybody..... :wavey:
Due to the wonders of modern technology..... and T.D.C.'s free WIFI at the local library, I have another instalment :niceone:
Day 1 :ride:
Due to the fact CooneyR and helpers had put together another D.B.1000 down south, me, MrsJ and the boy (now named Piglett :msn-wink: ) headed south on the thursday before the big event.
We met some other reprobates (except you UmoPom, your far to sensible to be a reprobate :niceone: ) at St Arnaud for a latte, essential for tackling the wilds of Rainbow station.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0150.jpg
Suitably prepared the group saddled up and made tracks for Rainbow station and some not very nice looking cloud,
Not far in and we came to the first ford, this used to have a concrete base last year :gob:musta had a bit of rain.
MrsJ gets wet feet

Paying the toll :Police:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0163.jpg
A quick break at Lake Tennyson
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0171.jpg
then it was into Hanmer to replenish caffiene levels and we all went our seperate ways.
The Jatz's headed for TimG's and a nice meal and soft bed, cheers Tim and Debs :niceone:
Day 2 :ride:
The day got of to a shakey start with a quake in the wee small hours of the morning  But it was soon gunna get better.
MattsDakar had put together a ride through the Orari gorge on the way to Fairlie.
The 3 of us left TimG's and headed to Ashburton to meet up with the rest of the crew. MrsJ and piglett bailed on this ride, but there was plenty of takers without them.
Here we are at the Orari river
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0176.jpg
A nice alternative to taking the seal is to ride straight up the river bed :niceone:
Into the hills we headed
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0191.jpg
And onto the top of the hills
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0197.jpg

I didn't get many more pics as I was to busy rideing :ride:

Right... I'll try again  Don't you hate it when you spend ages writing a post and it disapears :shit:
Anyway...
Day3 and the official D.B start :ride:
The 3 of us left the Gladstone pub at about 6:30 and after a bit of mucking around ( I should learn to use a gps properly) we found our way onto the official route, following some others tracks in the gravel and mud.
We rode some farm tracks
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0206-1.jpg
And through some forestry
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0207.jpg
And some rivers that had a few hidden surprises for some
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0229-1.jpg
And some more farm tracks
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0235-1.jpg
And emerged at Kurow where we fuelled up the bikes and bodies, and chatted to other D.B.ers
Then the decision was made to tackle the "Challenge Section" :niceone:
After some more nav errors we found our way back onto the route and went up the "Zig Zag", kida like riding up a steep riverbed
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0244.jpg
Over the top
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0248.jpg
And down the other side, go piglett go :niceone:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0254.jpg
More up hill and down dale followed , passing and being passed by other riders. Dunno what the story is here 'cause it's not Ida Valley
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0270.jpg
Accross the top on Geddes road, and that scree is a p.i.t.a to ride on
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0274.jpg
Coming down and MrsJ had her first off, she did really well getting this far through some quite challenging riding. Piglett was on the job to look after his mum, leaving me free to take photos :D
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0277-1.jpg
We got off the challenge section and fuel was becoming an issue for me so we bailed to Omakau, which was closed  By this stage I was well through my reserve, so emptied my 2l reserve reserve into the tank and gapped it for Alexandra campground and a cold beer or 4

Day 4 :scooter:
Another earlyish start and we were away towards Roxbourgh. I really do like rideing in the early morning, especially through Central Otago, somthing about the light
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0286.jpg
Rode through some other roads including Beaumont track heading for Lawrence and breakfast. It really was a sight seeinga sea of bikes parked outside the servo waiting for it to open, no pic of it though
Then it was over the Dunstan rd. :niceone:
It was slippery in places
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0298-1.jpg
We caught up with some other riders there who were having fuel issues, so gave them 3 of our 4 litres of reserve reserve and made our way to Moa creek via the Old Dunstan rd.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0310.jpg
By this stage we had hooke dup with XF650 who had a wee fuel stash at Poolburn, Rumor had it the Omakau servo was running out of fuel which is where we should have gone.
Anyway... we got to Poolburn with some others and XF650 organized some more fuel for everybody :woohoo: top bloke
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0314.jpg
After getting 5l each for the 3 of us we hooked up with a bigger group for the ride over Omarama saddle.
River crossing after river crossing followed, some more succesfull....
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0327.jpg
than others....
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0324.jpg
Well done EddieB for getting his fully loaded 950 through the crossings and over the saddle without laying it down  mammoth effort. Anyway we all made it to Omarama for more fuel and food, EddieB and Crim decided to stay in Omarama as they were done for the day while the rest of us bailed for Fairlie.
Stunning end to another days riding, cruising around Lake Tekapo and beside the canal with JezzaNz, :wavey: Jezza
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0348.jpg
Left Jezza in Tekapo and we rode over Burkes pass to Fairlie.....Magic

Day 5 :scooter:
After a proper breaky in Fairlie, MrsJ was kindof sick of a quick coffee and a muesli bar by this stage., we headed back over Burkes pass to to meet up with EddieB and Crim for a ride through Black Forest station, which we missed the day before.
We had a bit of a wait there while someone played with thier bike in Tekapo.
Waiting..... Waiting..... :wait: :corn:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0369.jpg
EVENTUALLY.... we got under way down Haldon rd
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0373.jpg
Wishing I had the BIG for this section. Stopped to ask the farmer if the combination had been changed, I'd hater to ride all the way through and have to turn around and come back.
Anyway..... we had some minor technical issues again
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0380.jpg
Glad I threw some spare nuts and bolts into the tool kit at this stage
At the top
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0391.jpg
Got to the Benmore dam and EddieB split off heading for Queenstown and Crim had to get home to Chch which left the 3 of us to gently ride over Hakataramea and Mackenzie passes

I did have plans of doing Lees valley/Okuku pass but was out voted
So I picked up a bigger front sprocket in Geraldine, I was really sick of stopping at every gas station by this stage. A quick stop to see XF650 in Ashvegas to change sprockets and it was a mind and butt numbing pootle up SH1 and onto the Lewis pass. Rideing into Culverden was like rideing into a hair dryer, and we were all feeling a bit over it. time for a sleep and a bit of shade.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0433-1.jpg

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0270.jpg
Story is that this is the Ida Valley (about 15km north east up the valley from Poolburn) Railway Station before it was turned into the MTB rail trail. It is now about 70km north and 1000m higher than its original site. Was put on a trailer and pulled into that site by a dozer.
We spent a night there as part of the first pre run when there was too much snow to get more than another 1km beyond the hut.
Pic (two parts) of a poem on the wall inside and picture of a "crash".

As discused I owned bike in 2005 and loved it, only sold it to a chap from Dunedin because I wanted an electric start (DRZ400) as got sick of trying to kickstart half way up a hillclimb etc! Ironic now I own another kickstart bike (XR650R) that is alot more difficult to start!
I'll have to admit I added the purple handguards, the bike didnt have any when I got it and got the purple ones as a freeby from a mate, hey it makes the bike standout eh!

I had the BIG pushed up it by 3 guys (and still burnt out the clutch),and we were all pretty knackered after manhandling 4 bikes up it  Everything is doable provided you have the manpower. Also the log you need to go around after the first crossing may be challenging if your not commited
Bear in mind we did this about 1 month ago, so it may have changed now.

Like any off road track it can change quickly. The first time I went through (about 10yrs ago) the second stream crossing was only axle deep and the big hill climb was well graded. Now the stream crossing is boudery and deep and the hill climb is rough and loose (like a woman I new once  ) for the first bit.
I think Monstaman and Trials rider were heading back through later in the month, so they may have an update

would doing the track 'backwards' (Denniston -> New Creek) simplify things by turning that shitty climb into a shitty descent followed by a big splash?

Been meaning to get back to this little gem of a track for a while  We thought there may have been some damage due to the flooding in the Aorere earlier this year. So a plan was hatched over a couple of woodys on the thursday night

Sunday... the plan was to hook up with S.P. again and head through the Molesworth.
Could sworn I saw a smurf lurking about here
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0592.jpg
Anyway......
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0596.jpg
I didn't take any pics worth posting when we were going through the Molesworth.
And what trip would be complete with out a "technical issue"
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0613.jpg
This happened at the begining of Taylors pass, one set of tyre levers got as far as Taylors dam and the other set was almost in Blenheim before she got my message :shit:
Thats about it for this trip :bye:
Untill next time.....

Another great report Mr Jatz
Keep them coming
I've been a bit slack lately (but thats not unusuall) so I'll copy this RR from ADVrider over to here....
"cause it's my thread and I can do what I like :innocent:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Where to begin....... ? Day 1
Due to Mrs Ztaj's tenere giving up again it was decided she needed a new bike. I found one in the North Island, out New Plymouth way, a deal was struck and I headed north with a bit of a plan to have a look about.I didn't have to be home untill the following Sunday
Here's the bike... A 2000 DR350,
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/DR350.jpg
After staying with the seller for the night and talking bikes and stuff I left with the intention of heading for Hamilton.
It was a nice morning for a ride in "the Naki"
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10115.jpg
I found my first bit of gravel on the Tarrata rd, between Inglewood and highway 43
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10116.jpg,
It was not long after I took this shot I was riding along , enjoying the scenery when I had a wild goat leap off a bank almost on top of me and run in front of me for a bit before hurtling off into the scrub on the other side of the road
After a quick coffee at the pub in Whangamomona
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10122.jpg
(it was to early for anything stronger ) and it was off towards Taumaranui.
Here's a tunnel,
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10128.jpg
I was told to take the next left turn after the tunnel by my host, the night before, and by the nice lady at the pub. Be rude not to then I thought . So I turned onto Moki rd, then a couple of other roads with a plan to pop out on the West coast at Ahititi
I guess you've all seen the fences with shoes or bras strung up on them ? Well they do things a little differently around here
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10133.jpg
I got to Highway 3 and headed north with the intention of getting onto the Manganui rd just after Awakino, I couldn't resist a quick blast down the beach though, it was such a nice day
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10143.jpg
The Mangonui road between Awakino and Kawhia, roughly, (there's a few different roads but if you look at a map you'll get the idea ) was a gem
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10153.jpg
It had a bit of everything, fast gravel, seal, twisties, and a tiny bit of mud and wild goats scurrying off the road at every second bend it seemed
I got to Kawhia where I had a txt from a fellow KiwiBiker (google it ) with the offer of a bed in Hamilton, Cheers TriBoy and Kanny, I planned on catching up with another inmate there anyway so it was all falling into place.
I had to go to Raglan though, just cause there was an interesting piece of gravel rd between Kawhia and Raglan
Ended up in Hamilton just as it was getting dark, awesome, Changed the front sproket for a slightly bigger one and had a couple of beers,
So ends Day 1
Fellow inmate Dino was convinced to join me for a bit, just aswell 'cause I needed help to get out of Hamilton.
"Hey Dino, get me the hell out of Hamilton"
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10172.jpg
We headed towards Rotorua and then Murupara down a couple of state highways, almost did my head in that bit.
Dino turned out to be a friendly guy.
Here he is giving the new bike a road test, nice wave Dino
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10181.jpg
Dino turned back at Murupara, he had to get home and I carried on, heading along the Lake Waikerimoana rd.
I had been warned about the locals on this road and told not to stop. I felt a bit uneasy so didn't stop, strange really as the only people I did talk to seemed o.k. Some of them looked bit militant though, but I think they waved, hard to tell as I was sideways around a corner at the time
It really is a magic place, very primitive feeling, with wild horses and isolated settlements. I will go back
Here is a couple of pics anyway
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10190.jpg
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10195.jpg
I missed getting any pics of the horses, next time
I got past Lake Waikerimoana and through Tuai when I came over a rise and the bike just stopped revving, it would idle nicely but died with any throttle. One of the locals turned up and offered help, cheers Ra.I started investigating and found the needle had broken in the carb , not something I needed here,Before long another local turned up,Ling (?) and offered moral support . I didn't have the tools needed to fix it on the roadside, so I bodged it up and tried to get to the next town (Wairoa) I got about another 1 kilometer before it stopped again. I pushed it to the nearest farmhouse to leave it there while I went to town (getting dark by this stage).I phoned MrsZtaj who put up a thread on Kiwibiker, asking for help) I didn't look like i could get another needle.
Before long my phone was buzzing and beeping with offers of trailers/utes and names of people to contact in the area who may be able to help, also people looking for replacement parts and getting information on what was needed.
To those people... A big thanks, it was really apreciated
Anyway.... I started walking to town and who should show up but Ra who took me back to his place at Tuai for the night.
I spent the evening in his shed fixing the carb
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Image0011.jpg
but it's o.k..... I had company
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Image0012.jpg
Thanks to Rawiti and Trish and kids, for the roof and the food, you really are good people
Here ends Day 2
Day 3
Rawiti took me back to the farmers house bright and early to see if my repairs work. They did and after saying goodbye to Rawiti and John (farmer) it was time to make tracks to Masterton.
This sign is at the eastern end of the Waikerimoana rd, I like signs like this one
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10202.jpg
A quick re-fuel in Wairoa, gas for the bike and chocolate for me, and I motored down to Napier on the seal.
After lunch in Napier it was time to have a look at some of the backroads south and east of Hastings.
I took Middle road to begin with, then got lost
Somehow I ended up at this beach
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10223.jpg
Kairakau Beach it's called.
Then it was onto some more nice flowing gravel roads, reeeal nice riding and the little 350 was loving it.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10228.jpg
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10227.jpg
I didn't take to many pics here as it was getting late-ish and I still had to get to Masterton, before the rain and darkness if I could. I got to Porongahau via more gravel roads and filled before the final leg to Masterton down route 52, ooooo that is a fun road, even on knobblies
and I didn't beat the rain
I eventually found JunkmanJoes house in Masterton just after dark, after a fairly busy day and his good wife made a huge meal, Onya Alana
End of day 3
Day 4
Joe was going to join me for the day and show me round some of the local roads
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10241.jpg
We headed to Carterton where we went up a Mt Dick ( did I get that right Joe) for a view of the Wairarapa valley, then took a round about route to Martinborough and the cafe formaly known as Toppys, I have a vague idea which roads we used but can't be sure, they were absolutely first class roads though.
Here's a sample......
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10261.jpg
I was
to busy riding to take too many pics.
At one point a mob of wild deer ran across the road in front of me, then came back a wee bit further up the road.
After lunch we made our way out to the coast at White rock station. Joe had organised access through some private property and we headed for Cape Palliser via the coast.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/IMG_0011.jpg
Here's Joe
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/IMG_0006.jpg
and some other random pics
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/IMG_0037.jpg
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/IMG_0021.jpg
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/IMG_0043.jpg
Yet more great riding, I was gobsmacked
I upset some of the locals with my noisy bike
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/IMG_0036.jpg
and we had to walk/climb up the steps to the lighthouse at Cape Palliser
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/IMG_0050.jpg
We joined the main rd at Ngawi, a small fishing village on the south coast.
After a mind and butt numbing ride to Featherston we said seeya and headed in opposite directions. Thanks for a top days riding Joe
I organized another bed for the night in Wellington, cheers EddieB and made tracks over the Rimutakas. Almost the end of another great day
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10096.jpg
but Wellington must've known I was coming and they put on a show for me
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Image0015.jpg
So ends day 4
Day 5...
It had to end I suppose .
After an early morning pootle into the city I went to this building
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10097.jpg
I asked nicely and smiled sweetly and the security guards let me take my bike into parliaments grounds.
Then I made my way down to the ferry buildings to get my ride across Cook straight
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10099.jpg.
Waiting on the other side was the new bikes shed mates, they introduced themselves to each other
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10113.jpg
after lunch it was a rather spirited trip back around Queen Charlotte drive for me, trying to keep ahead and take photos,
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10124.jpg
glad to be back on my own bike too
I think MrsZtaj likes her new bike
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10127.jpg
Here the bikes are getting to know each other in the shed.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SDC10141.jpg
so ends day 5 and the trip

Sorry Padders, I forgot about you :innocent:
I'm not sure what piglet's doing with the 250 (besides cluttering up his dads shed  ) I don't think the bashplate would fit anyway
Aaaand..... Due to a post made on another thread Piglet and I were booked in for a ride during Queens b/day weekend.
Things didn't start to well when we had to put our wet's on before leaving the driveway, then I nearly plowed into some wandering stock on the Mot valley h/way, thennn.... this happened
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0839.gif
A brand new tyre and it had a fault which kept puncturing the tube. So I got MrsJ out of bed to deliver another wheel with a well used tyre to get me back to the local shop for another tyre
We were only 3 hrs late leaving for the trip by this stage  so decide to take it easy on the ride to Murchison, besides which, scrubbing in a MX tyre on wet seal is not the best :shit:
We got to Murch with no more issues (but the drama llama wasn't finished just yet  ) and headed over the Maruia saddle
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0845.gif
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0850.gif
and down to Springs junct.
The Rahu was nice, the sun was almost shinning :sunny: then Piglet disappeared from my mirrors. When I got back to him, he said he had a broken carb needle  never mind, this'll be the 3rd one of these I've fixed on the side of the road, gettin good at it now
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0860.gif
nice spot to break down too
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0861.gif
Half an hour later and we were away again......:woohoo: 'cept I lost my fender bag with tyre levers and tube and nearly brained Piglet with a 10 in. crescent when it fell off my bike at 100km/h when I went past him.
We got to Reefton where I made calls and left txts to the other guys to let them know we were heading into Big river without them.
Here's the view from our accommodation just after we got there, almost dark:blink:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0862.gif
And the others still had to come in :shit:
They arrived o.k. after their own dramas, which are written in another thread
End of day 1 (thank god  )
The other nut cases arrived in the dark the night before (3 bikes and 2 headlights, anyone who's ridden this track will know what a feat that is) and a visit from Trials rider, who rode the 50k round trip in the dark and rain just to say g'day, and because someone forgot to :mobile: him
Heavy rain over night had the rivers rising, so it was going to be "interesting" getting out in the morning.
Here's what we saw from the car park
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0865.gif
and here's where we stayed
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0871.gif
and here's the little river we'd riden through the night before without giving it another thought
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Dave.gif
After a brew and waiting for what seemed an eternity, it was decided the level had dropped about 3 inches, so we made the call to go
Safely accross and push the bikes to the next crossing
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0880.gif
after a bit of draining and de-watering and meeting up with Trials Rider (we were supposed to meet him at 9 at the end of the 4wd track)
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0882.gif
we were away to have a look at a track T.R. knew of, reakoned it would be easy on bikes:blink:
One last pic of Big river
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0887.gif
We got out of Big river and headed for the Green hut track.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0897.gif
Rush hour
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0898.gif
We couldn't get to the hut as there was a swollen river in the way, who woulda thought eh ? so we turned around and re-traced our tracks.
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0910.gif
T.R. reackoned he knew a short cut, here's part of his " short cut" we had to ride up
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0916.gif
It was a steep ride back out, there will be pics on the the other thread here>http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/137915-Queen-s-Birthday-South-Island-ADV-Ride/page10
and I'll post some video when I get to an internet cafe.
Any way, we got back out to Reefton late afternoon for caffein and fuel, and a couple of bikes needed the milk drained from them and fresh oil added
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0928.gif
then it was a gentle ride down to Ross, with a stop in Hokitika for more fuel
Piglet

Got to Ross where the motel owner let us park our bikes in the car shed :niceone:
Had a feed at the Empire hotel and played pool like a muppet (must keep away from pool tables  ) until one of the owners dogs drove us out with his fart's
Here ends day 2 and I won't say anything about being woken up by someone dying noisily out side

said it once i'll say it again. You buggas got some bloody good countrty down there:yes: nice pics Jatz
As promised....
The sun was shinning, the birds were singing and we had a mountain to ride up :woohoo:
What could possibly go wrong on a day like this
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0933.gif
It was only a short ride from the centre of Ross to the start of the track, about 500 m and we were into it  I don't have pics but there is a bit of video of the first bit of the track, very loose and bumpy :shit:
Once again Nordie showed his class by disappearing up the track while the rest of us struggled. He was good enough to come back and help Matt out with the BRP
Anyway, we got past the first bit and through this
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0936.gif
and came to this....
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0942.gif
most went around the outside, but there's always one black sheep:facepalm:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/SAM_0940-1.gif
about here a couple of people pulled the pin and headed for a gentle ride up Totara vlly rd. 3 of us carried on but didn't get much further before we came to another slippery rock with no way around or over it, without breaking something, so we retreated to join the others riding up Totara valley.
Here is the Mikonui river from the end of the road
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0943.gif
And this is mount Greenland, would have been nice to have got to the top, maybe in the summer
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0945.gif
There was some really nice streams on the way in but my pics don't do them justice, so I'll leave them out, unless Nordie want's to post some
We got some lunch back in Ross and headed down to the beach to eat it and skim some stones
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0964.gif
Then made our way onto the old railway line for the trip north
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0970.gif
It was a nice straight track, as you would expect being an old railway line and it had a nice firm base of gravel, most of the bridges were still complete
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0974.gif
There was still a few puddles around
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Queens%20birthday%20weekend/SAM_0977.gif

All went well on the way home, 'cept I ran out of gas at the Newton bridge in the Buller gorge , Piglet was dispatched to Murch to fuel up and bring some back while I layed the bike on it's side to put all the gas on the left side of the tank, which was enough to get me to Murch under my own steam :woohoo:

It was a great weekend, it wasn't cold so the wet wasn't an issue, some good challenging stuff, some nice scenic stuff and good company,
I will be going back to Mt Greenland and I still haven't done Napoleons on the bike so must do that too.

It's a nice looking bike and we should keep it, but after riding the 350's and having reliability, modern suspension and decent brakes........

I'm waiting on a brand spanking new original muffler for the Big, coming from the Netherlands, should be here about mid August, I hope

Yip... just re-built. Apparently a helicoil was put in crooked in the barrel during the last re build. We have a spare barrel and a new oversize piston kit here, so it's my turn to have a go at it.

Yes, we are riding from Perth to Melbourne over the next 16 days, the route isn't set in stone, we have an aunty of Allisons to see in Warnambool and thats about it.The bike is a 1200gs so I wont be going anywhere to gnarly as it'll be fairly well loaded and it'll get a bit spendy if it gets damaged.
Anyway....I'll start a proper writup now as there is a guy loading bricks onto a truck just downstairs and it's 5:30 am, I'm still adjusting to the time diff aswell

Day 3
We left Waroona and headed southwest/eastish with a hint of north thrown in just for good measure...Just drifted in other words :ride:
We ended up in Busselton and went for a walk down the pier, apparently it's the longest in the southern hemisphere. It's 1.8k's long, we walked allthe way out and back because I wasn't paying for a train ride :shit:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0046.jpg
We had a wee chat with a local
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0034.jpg
He offered to give us some crabs
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0036.jpg
we politely declined....:innocent:
Soooo after MrsJ decided she didn't want to talk to me and she broke her intercom :crybaby:
we carried on to Cape Naturaliste, there is whale watching here if your patient and here at the right time of the year  We were'nt there at the right time, so we had lunch while waiting....

pretty soon we had to carry on, just time for a quick pic
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0056.jpg
and we carried on down the caves road towards Augusta, a real nice riding road it was too, past wineries and through a bit of Karri forest, I didn't expect this from Aus :gob:
Anyway.... we set up camp at a campground beside Flinders bay, real nice it was too

Day 4
Woke up to grey overcast skies...... then heavy rain while we packed up :eek5: we rode down to Cape Leeuwin, which is where the Indian ocean meets the Southern ocean
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0070.jpg
We were to early for the light house and surrounds to be open, Damn Aussies don't get out of bed till late
So had a poke about in some rock pools.....
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0085.jpg
After that we headed towards Albany..... and this is where things went a little pear shaped.....
Heading down the Brock h/way and the bike started vibrating and making some horrible noises. I quickly pulled over, stood back and looked at it.... used some choice words and...... looked some more  checked for obvious things, then pulled out my cell phone. No service..... so we flaged down a couple of cars, and found a nice lady to take us back to Busselton (65k's away) where I could get cell reception. I got hold of Brian who recomended a couple of things to check and said he would meet us back at the bike with a spae just incase :shit: He was back in Perth, about 3.5/4hrs away...
We hitched/walked back to the bike, with a ride from a guy called "Brooksy" who went out of his way to take us an extra 40 odd k's past his turnoff just to drop us back at the bike, bear in mind it's still pissin down too:blink:
I checked what Brian recomended, but it was more terminal than that, I could tell
Any way....I always find a brew helps while your waiting
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0097.jpg
Brian arrived with our new ride and took the old one for a quick spin and said..."the final drives f**cked  Who'd a thought
Here he is...
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0101.jpg
So with a new bike(which I thought fet a little saggy in the arse) we headed off into heavy rain/showers and stayed in Pemberton where we gave the supplied hair dryer a work out and the bathroom looked like a chinese laundry. BTW I tried Barramundie here and was not impresesed:shutup: could been the way it was cooked though.

http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp201/ztaj/Aus%20trip/DSCN0155.jpg
