I added myself to the 2-day list and will be with a non Kiwirider mate on a GS1100. We are riding from north of Auckland on Monday,

Nice one :niceone:

Done Molesworth several times but never Lees Valley. Any tips on Lees would be most welcome.

Info on Lees valley can be found here : Lees Valley (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/53/lees-valley-ride.php)

Is it too late to sign on for the BBQ on Friday at Fairlie? (x2).

Hi John. Your in luck. Two more for the BBQ makes 65 i.e. the max we have catered for.

Info on Lees valley can be found here : Lees Valley (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/53/lees-valley-ride.php)

An if you look at my website (see my signature) there is a GPS route file for Lees Valley to complement ADVGD's information :msn-wink:

I'm starting to think it will be interesting to see who takes the most "inappropriate" bike over Awakino Saddle south of Kurow. So far I've taken a 950 ADV S through without too much trouble but a Tiger or a GS may take the title. The farmer told me that guys on DRZ400's couldn't do it a couple of years back so was supprised when I told him the 950 got through. I'll be keen to hear stories on Saturday night around the "camp fire".

Cheers R

I'm with you Brent, GPS's ARE for woofta's, you won't ever see one of them on my bike, have to ask yourself how much of an adventure is it when you know exactly where you are at all times??? :bleh:

Hi there, name's John and I met up with some of you last year in Alex and rode day-2 on my 955i Tiger (road tyres) and had a blast. So much so that I'm keen to ride the whole event this year, albeit on better tyres. I added myself to the 2-day list and will be with a non Kiwirider mate on a GS1100. We are riding from north of Auckland on Monday, Molesworth and Lees Valley. I heard that some may ride from CHCH on Friday through the gorge and wondered if we might join you for that (details ??). We'll probably tent at Fairlie and Alex for accom.

Well as I said in the first post there will not be any scrutineering or similar so I can't enforce this. I'm simply promoting "best practice" in terms of preparations. Because we travel through two forestry blocks it would be prudent to carry one or as a minimum ride with someone who has one.
Cheers R

To the person who asked What If they don't carry a fire extinguiser on the DB1000...

On Dec 21st 2010 a fire was started in grass in the Waimate Gorge ( most of the southerners know that location ) by sparks from wires touching in high winds

10 days, 8 helicopters, lots of men and 180 hectares later it was put out:doh:

Bill to fight fire so far, $500,000 and counting

I suggest you carry a fire extinguisher :niceone:

Was down south with work this week & was reminded that many parts of the DB route are un-fenced roads.
Weaning is underway so go very quietly through mobs of lambs. They are real skittery just off the ewes & ya don't want to cause a smother.
Also what looks like a rock could be a dozing sheep, startled merino's can run towards your vehicle & livestock like to camp on warm gravel, often just around a blind corner.
And no - I didn't hit anything.
Ride safe

Rubber band never worked for me, at the start when all the paper is on the bottom spool you wind the top spool a lot to get the paper moving but the rubber band made the bottom spool unwind just as fast but since the bottom had more paper on it it feed the paper out to fast and got all messed up.
I went to a friction based holding system where I turned the bottom spool a bit then wound the paper up with the top spool until it was nice again.
Not sure that I explained that very well but whateva....

Apologies if I am bantering common knowledge, but I'd hate to see anyone have dramas in the middle of nowhere, so just as a heads up, a bashplate is an absolute must for those doing the technical section(s). After pulling my B&B bashplate off it was surprisingly beaten up and distorted from numerous big hits on the technical section prerun. One of the bike frame mounts where the bashplate mounts to was smashed off and needed to be wielded back on. If the bashplate wasn't there you could guarantee one of the casings would have been smashed and spewing oil.

Admittedly there was a bit of speed involved in some of those sections and a more relaxed pace may have avoided this, but you just never know when that big rock is going to be lurking around the next bend or over the next crest to catch you out

Oh yea, it's essentially done.
Just been cutting the short highlight version to add to the disc but progress on that stalled mid November.
Guess I could just burn it as is with just the main feature but I kind of like having a 20minute cut as well as the 70 or 80 minute version. (cut from about 6 hours of tape)
Haven't created the DVD menus or label for printing on the DVD surface either.

if you put 2 more tubes in the top corners then wrap the sheets around those you will see more of the chart and it will flatten it out rather then rubbing over the middle piece of your container

i never bothered with mine since i havent got the cross section. i think Cooneyr and Transalper do it with there containers

I'm pretty certain you need to book first. Earnslaw page here (https://www.realjourneys.co.nz/Main/TSSEarnslaw_WP/). Make sure you head south from Queenstown to Garston (bit of a back track) and do the Nevis. Lots of stream crossings (27 ish) at the southern end so think twice if lots of rain. Serpentine is part of the SB route and you should be OK.

If you want to do something different from the DB route (seems sensible) might I suggest once you get to Cromwell you travel to Roxburgh, Lake Onslow Road and the Maniototo plains to Ranfurly, across to St Bathurns and do Little Omarama Saddle. DB route goes over Big Omarama Saddle is further west and actually named Omarama Saddle on topos (Little Omarama Saddle isn't named on the topos). PM if you want more detail.

Hi All. Was just think about stuff we need at the BBQ today and realised that many will be giving me/Mrs Cooneyr $27 i.e. BBQ = $12, Black Forest = $10 and Sticker = $5. This is a PITA number cause unless most of you bring exact change we will need a pretty sizeable float.

So in short please make an effort to bring the correct change or buy yourself beers at the pub (publican won't complain ;)) till you have the correct change. We will have a float but it will be from out personal funds so it won't be huge.

P.S. I've just been through my list/emails etc and I reckon there will be 69 riders this year!

Sounds good, I have another 3 or 4 days up my sleeve after the DB, I had intended to put together a return route next week possibly heading towards Haast Pass with as many off road sections as possible. At at this stage there is no set plans as to where or which way I'm heading, I'm easy, just keen to check out some new country, camp up at a few spots, all in a sort of relaxed manner. The challenge route out of Kurow is the most difficult section. I think you'll be fine on everything else and I'm sure you could do Kurow south challenge if you took your time.

I'd rather not have money being put into our account as we need to have cash on the day to pay for BBQ and Black Forest (there is no forest!). We're just collecting money on their behalf. It's getting a bit close to the date now to be certain that everybody's money will be through. Next year I'll be better organised and sort something out along these lines.

Or just give Ryan $30 to keep him in beers for the event as small thanks for all his hard work putting this together, and to Mrs Cooneyr for putting up with all his motorcycling madness.

The Map60csx compass page was a bit better, thing that got me was at one time the compass and pointer were pointing opposite directions on the 60csx. We were practically stopped on a via point though so maybe the compass was ahead of the pointer if that's even possible?

Nope, on the 62s when i turn the pointer updates so it always points to the next via point or waypoint at what ever angle or bearing it me be.
When it's pointing straight up the screen the next via/waypoint is straight in front of me.
The compass on the 62s works in 3 dimensions as opposed to the Map60csx only works properly when the unit is held level (just found this out recently).
When I calibrate my compass I have to turn it on the horizontal, then barrel roll it, then flip it end over end.

It did almost seem like we had not gone close enough to the via point for it to register and move on to the next where as mine had done that.

This may affect your pointer?

Yes, that would/will affect your pointer as the map is always changing to annotate you North...:)
If your scale is so that you can see the next waypoint, it has no real relevence anyway. You can see the direction to head by seeing the flag?

GPS units without a compass can only work out the direction when the unit is moving, so I wonder if the 60csx pointer was basing the direction to the next waypoint more off the direction you were last travelling rather than using the inbuilt compass.

we took it off the bike and recalibrated it while there but made no difference.
I'd need to take it home and have a serious play with it to work for sure.

Thepom started getting the hang of things when he started reading the distance to next indicator as well as the map. Before that there were a few u-turns ;) Easier to see where you should have gone once you gone past it based on the map alone.

if you put 2 more tubes in the top corners then wrap the sheets around those you will see more of the chart and it will flatten it out rather then rubbing over the middle piece of your container

Put some drinking straw over those tubes too. Nicey rolley...

When I set up my GPS route for the first DB I put a waypoint at each intersection and another one 100m up the road after the corner.
Then the GPS would always point me in the right direction at the corner even if the road snaked around eg. Direct line from corner to next waypoint is NW but at the intersection you need to turn E.

Or something...

To prep the bike for the DB1K I had planned to go for a fish in the High Country and rack up a few KM's breaking in the new gearbox and rings, but it was too windy for fishing so I decided to go for a trail ride. The plan was for a nice easy paced ride to just work my up and down the gears and bed them in. Started off gentle but it ended up getting a bit more adventurous and drowned the bike once, then after all the bollocks of tank removal etc was done and got it going again, I ended up having a pretty big spill at high speed and ended up mangling the headlight grill, bending the windshield frame and cracking the windshield, breaking 2 of the new indicators, smashing the glass on 1 of the 2 new mirrors and slogging out the elbow in the other, snapping the clutch leaver, ripping the tags of my AirHawk, bending all the pannier frames, mangling the pannier boxes, trashed my plastics, and my faceplant into the gravel scratched up my new Airoh S4 helmet visor

All my hard work and money spent prepping the bike for the DB1k was undone in a matter of seconds, and I hope like hell my neck comes right soon as I can hardly turn my head, un-fricken-believable :oi-grr:

Another slack bugger here - motor sitting loose in frame (from gearbox re-build) but nothing connected yet. Spent most of the weekend trying to find "missing" rear engine mount. Garage looks like a bomb site from tipping out boxes of crap, thinking I had put it somewhere stupid. Didn't make sense cause I was sure I kept all the bits together. However it was months ago & I was starting to doubt myself.
Resigned that I must have thrown it out with rubbish, I got an engineer mate to fabricate one. Then last night while trying to fit it for drilling, I realised that the brake switch bracket is also the rear engine mount, DORK.
Still got a long way to go though.....

Off down to the Iron bridge across the Tekapo river today to check the road leading to the bridge for Ryan so fingers crossed it will be all good.

I was at Haldon over new years and tried to get to the bridge for a looksee, They were spilling soo much water the road was flooded and was flowing through camp.......less spill should mean its all good.

Just back from the Iron Bridge, steady rain falling all over the MacKenzie basin now and looks to be set in for the day. Track from the Haldon Arm camp to the Iron Bridge is damp with several large puddles (1.5ft) at most, so should be fine. Evidence of wide scale flooding along fence line in places and strams running beside the track are high!

Fingers crossed this rain stops soon in the catchments or there may be issues if they spill more water from Lake Tekapo.

Was thinking I'd stick me bike on the right wheel space and walk it across the bridge if it's wet on the day.

I remember some of those puddles along the fence looked like they might get quite deep where there is another higher track next to them. Was all dry when I saw it.

I'll take the adventure pushing over the potential adventure swimming on this occasion, but if it's a dry bridge then I'll go riding as it's been done before.

Hi There One Dayers....just curious whos doing what.....

you dont have to tell if your going for max bragging rights.

Route length options -
1.The maximum route length is about 1120km if you ride the options to maximise the route length. This is doing Danseys Pass (not doing Challenge 1), Challenge 2 and the Scenic Loop.
2.The shortest route is about 1057km though this involves doing Challenge 1 (will be time consuming), not doing Challenge 2 and not doing the Scenic Loop.
3.For those who want to do technical stuff the mid length option of doing Challenges 1 and 2 and the Scenic Loop with will total of about 1070km.
4.For those that are less comfortable on technical terrain do Danseys Pass, not do Challenge 2 and do the Scenic Loop with a total of about 1110km.

Not long now.....

Interesting dash to make the 8:35 ferry this morning lane splitting in the rain on new knobblies over those damned catseyes. Made it with seconds to spare and still tying down while ferry under-way. Now holed up at Picton Top 10 with rain bucketing. Forecast shows clearing tomorrow so possible tenting at Molesworth if anyone else is in the area.

Thanks for the info Jezza. Fords on the way to the Iron Bridge are also OK then it seems.

I remember some of those puddles along the fence looked like they might get quite deep where there is another higher track next to them. Was all dry when I saw it.

This is not a silly idea re the bridge. Not a lot of room to move on the bridge deck channels and no protection (side rails) if you do get it wrong. Also correct about the higher track on the way along the fence line.

I've also just heard back from a Meridian guy based in Tekapo. Two things. First they are not sure if they might need to spill a bit more or just longer at the same rate for the storm we had today and the second we are due to get. If the flow rate stays the same we should be all good regarding getting over the bridge. There second issue might be a bit more problematic. Apparently part of the track along side the Pukaiki River has been washed out during the spilling including adjacent farm land.

I'll keep an eye on the river flows via Ecan's website and if Jezza can keep and eye on the flow at the control gates we can make a call about the Pukaki River track on the Friday night. Given the track missing and the stoney ground the lighter bikes will OK, if the flows remain constant or gets lower, but the less confident or those on bigger bikes might like to choose plan B or C. I'll be sticking to the original route on my big blue pig if the flow rates are OK.

Plan B is go over Black Forest track to cell 216, continue straight ahead for 26km to cell 238 (becomes a RH turn) then continue along the route. This removes the sections around Tekapo and the route is reduced by 102km overall.

Plan C is go over Black Forest track to cell 216 (as per above), travel right up to the highway, turn left and travel back to either Mt John (start of the scenic loop is at cell 230) or to travel right around to Hayman Rd (cell 224) then complete the remainder of the route. These options will likely add km to the route but it will be sealed. I'll explain this again at the BBQ.

Cheers R

No problem Ryan, fords are ok well passable but once again evidence of heavy flooding in them. I agree on the bridge, if wet it will be very slippery and if you go over (no rails on the bridge) there is a lot of water going under it at the moment so you and your bike will probably end up in Lake Benmore.....

Looks like Meridian have just ramped the flow back up again. Ecan flow recorder webpage shows that flows are now 3 times what they were yesterday (just over 150 cumecs vs just over 50 yesterday). With there being three times the water and the slowly reduce the flows management i.e. will take atleast 2 days to get back to 50 cumecs, I don't hold any hope of the approch to the iron bridge being passable. We are going to have to abondon the Pukaki River around to Tekapo section. As I said above I'll let people know at the BBQ how to modify their route sheets (both verbally and I'll have a notice up).

Hi All. I know this is very last minute but I'm going to update 3 pages of the the roll chart and produce new GPS files tonight given the Tekapo River flows increasing as mentioned above. There is a very good chance that the Iron Bridge (Jezza's pics) is underwater and its approaches will be under even deeper water.

I'll put new files on my website late tonight (don't expect before about 11pm) but for those whom it is too late to get access to the web I will bring a laptop and the "normal" Garmin USB cable to upload to the GPS files and I'll provide the replacement roll chart pages (for everybody) at the BBQ.

You will need to bring scissors and Sellotape or your GPS cable if it is not the standard USB cable. My laptop doesn't have any serial ports so if your GPS needs one sorry but you may be out of luck.

Priority will be given to getting the one day riders navigation info updated at the BBQ. The two day riders have the choice of doing the updating at the BBQ or in Alex. Could those that are staying at the Alex motor camp and who want an updated GPS file please wait till the Saturday night. If you are a two day rider who is not staying at the motor camp and who wants a new GPS file please see me at the BBQ.

Sorry for the inconvenience but God and Meridian have deemed this necessary.

Cheers
Ryan

Ps. The route will now be about 50km longer too! Fuel access won't be a problem.

I just trapped all my winter woolies onto the bike:stupid: Ain't unpacking it now so will have to get cold.

had an ass of a day today getting the bike warrant and rego worthy.
Blinkers wouldn't flash and the front bulbs were rusted in etc, and then some of the old wiring broke so a bit of rewiring and crimping was done in a mad panic, but the blinkers still wouldn't flash, so went down to Repco and got a flasher unit and hey presto they worked. put the bike back together and the starter would not turn over and sparks were flashing on the battery. I said fuck several times. All it was was a loose terminal, but the thread was stripped so that got fixed, then I put it all back together again and the engine wouldn' start. pulled it apart again and couldn't see anything obvious. I said fuck a few more times then wondered why the fuel tank felt so light. No gas. Filled it up and it started, flew through the warrant etc. exciting

BTW Ryan you rock:niceone:

Your not wrong. First year there were 9 . . . . this year there were 70!

I'm back at work, I'm nackered, got a good "visor" suntan (windburn) and I'm going to be lucky to keep my eyes open all day.

No pictures from me but bits of goss that I know of

3 drowned bikes
2 bike not going anywhere for a bit
1 serious injury (hit a sheep and rider now has broken pelvis and leg)
1 not so serious but couldn't ride injury
4 guys completed the one day ride
some loved the 1st challenge others though it was a MX track
Zerax is a machine. Still has the most completed 1 day rides and just completed another one. Two of these have been on 250cc bikes.

Big thankyou to Ms Cooneyr, Ollie and In Laws for all their tolerance and help. Thanks also to Transalper, ADVGD, XF650 for their significant contributions to getting this ride of the ground plus thanks to everybody else who also helped no matter how minor your input.

Keen to get feedback on the route and roll chart/GPS file plus see pictures etc.

Kia ora everybody on this magnificent Monday!!

Wow what a weekend. Friday was good, Saturday was fantastic & Sunday was a true adventure.

As most of you know Schmidtty my beloved BMW project blew either a gearbox or final drive seal on the way from Alex to Lawrence.
Although initially disappointing to be out of the ride I looked at the half full glass (no- not of oil) & it actually could have been way way worse. The nice bloke at Fox service station let me park it dripping oil in his workshop & hopefully Struan (that bloody beautiful hunk of manhood) will be able to pick it up & either deliver it up to Chch or Nelson in the next couple of months.

I was lucky as the bus to Dunners arrived about an hour later & hooked up with the Chch bus. 7pm I was safely in the arms of my beautiful wife & lil ponies:niceone:

Despite the bike shitting itself the riding, scenery & comraderie were legendary & I am already counting the minutes til next year where I'll be back with bells on.

Please please Ryan can we do it down South again- please???

So for a pack of ghey DR, pretentious KTM, meathead Honda, riders you're all a bloody good bunch.

Thanks for a great weekend:niceone::niceone::niceone::niceone:

Well what an awesome weekend, yet another great Dusty Butt
The ride certainly lived up to it's name, no rain meant lots of dust.
Great to see alot of the regular KB posters in the same place to put a few more faces to names.
The boys had a pretty uneventful Friday ride down thru Orari Gorge with 20 odd followers, no crashes or breakdowns but some great riding.
Saturdays ride was a blast, full credit to guys like Shrek who managed to get his hulking great BMW 1150 over the Awakino section, I'll admit that I certainly found it challenging in spots, I had one epic fall where I launched the XR at almost full throttle 30metres down a bank after being knocked off line by a rouge rock and unfortunately grabbed a handful just as I was ejected, luckily I had a reasonably soft landing involving about six feet of skydiving one high speed shoulder roll then another six feet of flying then another two somersaults. Luckily bike only suffered smashed mirrors and indicator, could have been soooooo much worse!!!!
We stayed in the pub in Alex and had a few to many fanta's so didn't get away before 10 but managed to catch most of the guys up by Omakau, rode with two guys on Husaberg 570cc and a KTM 950se so there was no muckin round (apart from beers in Omakau, Omarama )!
Great to see lots of happy riders and I'm sure most will be back again next year.
Thanks again Ryan, legend!

Yet another epic weekend organised by Ryan, cheers mate. Apart from the Husky shedding a couple of (not too viatal) parts on the Dunstin (cheers Tim for recovering some) and my luggage (vital), it was an awesome ride. Thanks also to Struan, always the glue that holds things together.....and remembers to pack a bottle of port:msn-wink:....Jatz, hope you and the famly made it home safely?

Great seeing some old faces and meeting new people also. Book me in for next year Ryan.

Huge kudos to Ryan, Mrs Coonyr et al for a great weekend. Definitely hooked and already looking forward to doing it a again. My tour was a little truncated due to some navigational oversights (note to self- keep up with own roll chart and cross check GPS instead of lazily following others!). Rescued x2 by Struan, hauling my sorry ass out of a ditch and supplying fuel at Poolburn (gotta get a bigger tank). His list of devoted fans grows apparently. Cheers to Aslan and others for the company/adventure too.

Congratulations to the 1 Dayers - what a massive achievement.
In fact well done to everyone that finished all of the route - that's a heap of ground to cover, either way.

The XF went well, considering I only got it back together late last week. So if anyone saw it laying down, I was only checking for oil leaks (thanks all you lifters). However the speedo did stop working early on & it's indicative of Ryan's excellent route sheets that I didn't get lost, even without the km check.

Highlight for me was the blast accross the Lammenmoor Range, something new for a lot of us. Only low for me was the river crossings, where I wished many times I was on the DT230.

A combination of my emergency stash & help from the locals at Poolburn meant that 10 bikes didn't have to ride back to Alex for fuel. This gave us time to tackle Omarama Saddle, where surley the river crossings are a "challenge" route in itself?. Regretfully we still ran out of time to ride Black Forest within the 2 days.

Thanks again Ryan (and your understanding family). A big bunch of Dusty Butter's are very grateful for your time & effort.

Not many pics - too busy picking up my bike.

Stunning ride Ryan and helpers, you really have taken it to a new level, although we didn't complete the route I am working on plans to nail it next year.
We're still in Fairlie tonight after doing Black forest/Haka and McKenzie's today. Proper write up to follow when we get home.

Yeah I thought I was on the KLR for a mo.:weird:

It wasn't till Ihad to drive thru Chch today that I realised just how beautiful the Deep South is. I could really happily spend a week just cruising thru the back roads & checking out the sights.

I'll have some great memories to churn over as I headback to work tomm.

It was good to finally meet some familiar names & catch up with old friends too.

Well got home bout 5 ish tonight, great road ride home too.

The DB was fantastic, cheers Ryan and co, what a fantastic event. Saturdays route over the zigzag was quite unexpected and just incredible.

Sunday started good until a puddle jumped out in front of me and drowned my bike. The dewatering was fairly straight forward, but we couldn't get it to suck fuel. Tried everything including a complete redesign of the vacuum petcock. Eventually discovered that when woodman first took the tank off he put it on the ground so the fuel outlet got full of dirt . Cheers Joe and Ryan and Shrek, and especially Andy and Paul for working so well as a team to get me going again. If I ever do a paris dakar you two will be my first choice for pit crew. Sorry for messing up your second day as well. We got into fairlie at 11.20 after doing Black Forest and a lot of gravel in the dark. Scaryily fun.

1st up  & to Mrs Coonyr for letting R sort this & to all the others who put their time & effort to make this what it was cheers Guys :apint:

left here runn'n late, picked up Monstaman from Tarras, arrived Fairlie late arvo, gear & bed sorted big  to Helenoftroy for letting us crash the night, then off to the pub to find a heap of Kber's jabbering about their ride that day, it just made the adrenalin run abit faster for what we were about to start on, :Punk:

it was geat catch'n up with old & new faces & the one's who i've been ayk'n with over the past year or so :niceone:

up feed & gone by 7am with TR, Mm, JMJ (team KB) so that we would get to Alex with time to burn, only to find ourselves back in Fairlie  the man with GPS hadn't reset it had he  :stupid: anyway an hour later we find ourselves on the right track which by this time was cut up from all the others that had gone through before us
then I decided to see if my beamer would climb a 1m bank after giving it to much juice (no pic's) :bleh:
we got to Kurow to see a large number of rider's there enjoying lunch & company the foot path resembled a laundry-mat with all the gear drying in the sun

then it was off ova the ski field & I thought this an't that tough, then around a corner or two  & it just got better & better  & with a bit of help from TA, Mm & JMJ got through the roughset bit on the way up :niceone: got through to the hut where we meet up with a few others & a decision was made wether to carry on the tec part or take the other way  so five of carry on the tec route the xtra in team KB was ADVGD, well I thought that the 1st part was tough...... never mind, got to see some pretty incredible country & with the encougement from my :ride: mates got through that section with only two wee spills then to Alex drop off ADVGD, (top bloke) then on to Roxburgh to cold beers, hot showers, a cooked BBq & pudding, then down to the shed to do some fix ups JMJ's gear lever & remove broken bits off beamer then crash

Mrs B and I didn't quite manage a full 1000km, as we couldn't quite keep up with our navigators on the fast bits we baled at Naseby on Day 1, and at Paerau on Day 2 (went back thru Danseys and Black Forest). Still managed 900km which is a real achievement for Mrs B. I am very proud of her. She breezed through the really tough bits we encountered (ie the big fords, slippery grass, forestry) and only had one small off in the mud of the Dunstan Trail, in which I went off in sympathy, conveniently solving my dilemma regarding the loathsome Givi screen on my Transalp, which has now been stylishly modified to about 1/4 its original length.
Thanks to CooneyR for setting up another awesome route, to his family for enablisng him to keep doing this, to the other route setters, and to XF650, HOT and TimG for patiently waiting for us time and time again, and for providing much needed encouragement.

Hats off to Ryan and his course setting crew for giving us such a great route this year. Had a real blast, the highlight being the Awakino challenge (a few pics below) - definitely an adventure! Only binned it once which was rather surprising and thanks to the forgiving nature of the DR.
Great to see old and new faces, special thanks to the Cagiva Navigator rider for chain lube at Alexandra and for the guy who let me buy petrol from his can at the finish - got me home by 12.15 in the morning.
Just serviced the DR - a slow puncture on the front, cm's of dust in the air box (but not past the filter!), some scrapes and a seriously stretched chain... pretty good for the 1600km I put on it since Friday!
Already looking forward to next year :niceone:229910229911229909

It's been said already but, again, Ryan you and your helpers created a seriously good route for this year. As soon as we entered the woods near the start it was clear this was going to be so much more than a long flat blast down gravel roads.

It wasn't long before we started inadvertently reducing the pest population; topo apparently being attacked by (and successfully repelling) a wallaby with his footpeg. Later during the final 5 hours of darkness there were black shapes crossing our paths at alarming intervals. At one stage zeRax stopped for two startled deer, and at another a group of surly bulls stopped for two startled riders.

Congratulations joshkie and ROD - we saw tracks from early on and they provided us with motivation to maintain our pace. Dunno if they were your tracks but if they were then it looked like you were on a mission by the number of overshot corners and fishtailing exits. Those seemed to reduce as we went along, so perhaps you found your rythym and calmly got the job done.

Only a couple of navigation errors where we went astray for a few km - maybe three times? All our own fault because the GPS combined with a roll chart made it pretty clear where to go.

Highlights for me were the Challenge Loop A, the section starting from the farm at Young Road through to the Serpentine Church and out on the Dunstan Road, and the Carricktown Track. zeRax was flying, but smooth and in control - that little WR250 is an astonishingly capable bike. All the fords before the Omarama Saddle were exciting in the dark. The first one caught zeRax out because it seemed he pretty much landed mid-stream. At one point I went through first and stopped to find zeRax's headlight went out behind me. He'd drowned the bike but it somehow cleared its throat, spat a bit of steam out the pipe for a while, and went on without further incident.

There was just enough moonlight to sense the size of the dropoffs through the Omarama saddle and Black Forest Tracks - very sobering, and alarming at times to see evidence of the occasional overshot corner by someone - surely not the other one-dayers?

The final few hours weren't pretty. Slow and deliberate at best, but it got us there. Thanks zeRax for keeping the pace up when I went into self-preservation mode from around 700km, and continually showing me how maintaining corner speed beats point-and-shoot. I learned heaps from this ride.

Thanks too to Katie and Alison for coming into Omakau with food and drink and fuel around 8:30 pm. Saved us 30 min and boosted our spirits and energy.

All up it was a brilliant ride and an excellent weekend. Only one photo to show for it, but lots of vivid memories. I'm still smiling (and spontaneously falling asleep).

Agree, what a magic trip and although we ran late on Sunday with Woodmans drowning we soldiered into the dark with high spirits, we blasted past Noel Jacksons gate (High Country Motorcycles) as the clock ticked over the thou :wings::wings::banana::banana::headbang::headbang: :2thumbsup:2thumbsup:woohoo::woohoo: you get the idea.

Finished with 1013 km on the clock ... done, funniest highlight (amongst many) for me was JMJ hurtling his man eating sleeping back at me from the back of his bike, every which way I steered to get around it the bloody thing eyed up my front wheel but chickened out with a rugby ball bounce into the weeds only inches from being DRed.

I thought the catastrophe was over when I realized Shrek was about to railroad me from behind cos I had locked up trying to avoid the MESB (Man Eating Sleeping Bag) :devil2:

So the 1150 train managed to get passed me and avoid the MESB which has piled off into the undergrowth.

Anyway, all good MESB back in its cage and bombs away onwards!!

Ryan, Mrs CooneyR and those you helped Ryan put together this great event - huge thanks.

I had an absolute blast. Prolly won't be attempting the challenge sections next year - asked myself several times after falling five times on the Awakino Saddle - 3 on the Ascent and 2 on the descent - "am I a silly old fool to delude myself I can do this stuff". Current resolve is to return next year and do it all again 'cept the Challenge Sections God Willing :)

Special thanks to Rogeson and JMJ for help in righting my DR. Roger you're a very patient man - thanks.

XF650 as always for his generous hospitality and Cold Comfort for time together on Sunday after we took a wrong turn on the Dunstan Trail ending up at Clarkes Junction

Returned to Picton to catch the Ferry yesterday through the Molesworth - absolutely awesome.

Cheers to all - great to see familiar KB ADV faces as well as meeting some new folks. Carpe Diem Aslan :niceone:

a year ago I traded my DRZ on the XR to get a better base for motarding. Straight away Helen was at me to do the next dusty butt. Yeah yeah yeah what ever I thought!

I've done a bit of dirt riding but nothing really in the last 15 years, so when I confirmed that I'd do this one I started to wonder what I'd got myself into. I had no dirt riding gear and beg borrowed and stole what I could. I picked peoples brains on what I needed to take and borrowed Cynna's spare 20ltr tank.

On Friday I caught up with the guys riding down and took some of the gear they didn't want to carry and effectlivly give me some allies for when we turned up with bikes on the trailer (best idea I've had for a long time).Friday early arvo I shot around to Helen and Sams to pick them up. We had a good drive down and unloaded settled into the buzz meeting a new bunch at the BBQ after resetting Sams valve clearances on his XR.

After a shite sleep thanks to the excitement and whoever was in room 10 hacking logs. The cooked brekkie was downed and onto the bikes. The choice of leaving the Kenda and cheng shin tyres was doubted as soon as we hit the wet grass and mud only km into the trip, they were shite.....very shite. Fook I was hoping the weather stayed ok and would improve. once we got back on the gravel and seal through to Waimate and Kurow my mojo returned and got into a bit of a groove. I had a dream run up the 1 st challenge section and made it to the top with no major dramas. the temp on the XR was in the mid 90's so I ran some water out of my Camel Bac onto the Radiators and soon got the temp back to an acceptable level. the rest of Day 1 was fooken wicked and didnt relise how much time slipped by and we finally rode into Alex in the dark after 10 sore tired and stoked with the sence of achievement.

Day 2 started with some bike prep and we hit the trail. Somehow we missed the 1st fuel stop, which explained why there was only the tracks of a few bikes ahead of us, this tested the range of the two XR's with 20 litre tanks and Thepoms XT. Well out from Omakau, Sam, The pom and even Cynna was on reserve and I'm not far off. We pulled into Omakau the XT runs out with just enough momentum to roll into the forecourt of the servo. I expected to be told that they were out of gas (told the night before that there was 100 litres left in their tanks). But the owner had been to Alex and got more that morning.....what a legened. The rest of the day was a hoot. The multiple river crossings leading up to the Omarama Saddle wore thin but challenging. Black Forest was stunning and have always wanted to do this.

We rode into Failie at 10pm after hitting the 1000km mark at the top of Burkes Pass and stoped at 1028 after 30 hours on the go. All in all a bloody great trip, Hats off to Ryan for setting this up and the mind boggles at the amount of work that goes into this for nothing but the love of it.

I'll be back for 2012 for sure!

Just arrived home, extended trip cut short due to engine issues, but it survived the return ride back from Haast and through Arthurs Pass back to Christchurch to wrap up an absolutely fantastic trip :headbang:

So much was packed into the last few days that I could rabbit on for pages, but I'll keep it short and sweet...

Ryan - Cooneyr
A huge huge thanks for what most have rightly said is a fierce benchmark level ADV ride, from the GPS files, the rollchart, fuel stop list, right through to the accommodation... superb job mate, absolutely superb :msn-wink:

DB1K Attendees
Meeting, sharing a beer and riding with so many great people was a huge highlight of the trip, the camaraderie on the trails was something else :drinknsin Thanks to those who pulled me out of the water after a half-arsed crossing attempt saw me fill the airbox with water :oi-grr:

Riding buddies
Over the 3 days the crew I rode with shuffled and merged a few times, the assortment of people and their unique sense of humour made the days a riot. My expensive gearbox repair meant no new GPS for me, so a big thanks to Kenny (thepom) and Mark (whatastoner) for playing GPS guide :niceone: I tell ya what, you'll never get left behind with whatastoner, super courteous and considerate rider, thanks mate :)

More thanks to _shrek_, Monstaman, Trails Rider and JMJ for adopting me half way through the challenge section, I told ya I'd behave :innocent:

Carnage
No carnage from those I rode with really, a few lie downs and some mild running repairs but no majors. Aside from my lie down in the water it was just the issue of a wasp that got under my jacket and stung me a couple of times in the lower back as I hit Yaldhurst, it would have been a bit unusual for those watching me flying down the road repeatedly smashing my back with my fist trying to kill it

Credit
Credit should be given to all those that did the DB1K as I am sure you will agree it was an effort worthy of a well earned pat on the back, especially those that did the challenge section on day 1, but one person worthy of a special mention is...

_Shrek_ : What can I say, aside from being a bloody hard case and a great riding buddy, he put on an outstanding show riding his massive GS through the challenge section on day 1 that many struggled on small unladen bikes, nice job you mad mad bugger :weird: The only thing that deducts brownie points was getting us in trouble with the holiday park owner by making a hell of a racket at all hours of the night :oi-grr:

Budda, you da man for bring my gear down on Friday, much appreciated

And of course a big thanks to Helen (helenoftroy) for hooking us lads up with a place to sleep on Sunday night, you're the best :)

Once again, great to meet and catch up with so many like-minded people, I look forward to catching up with you all on the next one

I have an arsenal of photos that I'll format and put up tomorrow

Huge thanks to Ryan (and family) for a great weekend (or three days as it turned out for EddieB, Jatzs and myself - who did the Black Forest on Monday) a superb weekend - next year I will do a bit of fitness work :apumpin: or get a lighter bike - I am still shattered!
Thanks to all I rode with - the help lifting my heavy old girl, patience shown and the lessons imparted - felt myself growing in confidence and speed all weekend the three "offs" slowed me down a bit but confidence soon returned:clap:!

Absolutely awsome ride.

Top route. I enjoyed this ride more than any I have done in quite a while. The challenge sections were great, and it is really good that those that choose not to punish them selves, can still participae fully in the ride. A major feat of organisation.

Ryan suggested three drowned bikes. I would say I saw more than that, and that is not including mine! No major dramas though for our group.

As with many others, I need to work on bike fitness a bit, but with determination, the odd energy boost, and the forebearance of Al, Garry, and Andy, I had a great time. Will certianly be back next year if i can make it.

Thanks again to all who contributed to the planning and organisation.:niceone:

Glad to see people generally had a great time.
Thanks Ryan for making this happen and thanks to those who helped me through a few of those rivers and picked me up when I needed it the odd time.
Well I kinda think that was the coolest Dusty Butt yet with a heap of two dayers actually failing to complete the course and I only spoke to or even heard of one rider (umopom IIRC?) fitting in the full Tekapo bit as well.
Any others?
Very impressed at the one dayers efforts, start to wonder if they are really humans or something else in disguise.
Even Ryan and I bailed at the Mackenzie Pass Rd turn off from the Halden Road on day two, but then have the excuse or reason in that he was in a hurry to get back to the teething baby and wifey and inlaws who were waiting to pack him up and take him home which is also why we didn't spend much time chatting on the road on day 2.

For me...
Day 1 was 14 hours 51 minutes starting 7:11am departing the Gladstone and arriving at the Alexandra Holiday Park at 10:02pm.
Day 2 was 13 hours 15 minutes starting 7:17am departing the Alexandra Holiday Park and arriving at the Gladstone at 8:32pm

So just looking at the track log to find out what kind of delays added to trip time I see -
Delays on Day one started with a few minutes going to look at the Fairlie River.
15 minutes making sure people (lots of who were already lost with the abandoned river crossing messing them up and gps users still getting the hang of them I guess) making sure they went up the correct path and talking to the farmer there.
8 minutes gas up at Waimatie.
1 hour 15 minutes at the River crossing that drowned a bike or two.
57 minutes Kurow Fuel, lunch and stuff.
40 minutes on the one spot on the first steep zig zag where Shrek came past while cynna was kicking the XR. (the challenge section S44 49.021 E170 21.131 to be precise)
So after 2 hours 20 minutes to go 31km we bailed left riding for 1 hour 8 minutes to get 28km out to Nasbey and pick up the main route from there after stopping for a drink.
12 minutes at the Cromwell garage for fuel etc.
at 8:50pm we hit the duffers Saddle up the Nevis after finishing the Carracktown Track climb. Seemed shorter going up it than going down last year.
Arriving at the Alexandra Holiday Park at 10:02pm. after 14 hours 51 minutes.

I think the Woodman episode was the only big hold up for us on Sunday.

We left the Camp at 7:17am but only went as far as the garage by Subway.
30 minutes for fuel, a pie and liftplus for me. What a way to start the day.
Left the garage at 7:50am.
Other delays were...
30 minutes round trip getting to Lawerance, waiting then filling up and getting back to the route.
28 minutes up Old Dunstain Rd having a snack enjoying the view down below.
40 minutes at S45 24.715 E169 46.830 - the Woodman episode. There was plenty of other help and the bike had briefly run so we thought they will be ok.
33 minutes Omakau fuel and very nice Pie and milkshake.
28 minutes Omarama fuel, refreshment.
8 minutes Mackenzie Pass to put on more clothes.
Got back to the Gladstone at 8:32pm after a 13 hour 15 minute day.

1) TimG & HOT above the Carricktown Track
2) Slop in the box (not mine)
3) A posse of dodgey looking DB'ers eyeing up a mob of sheep in the Maniototo
4) Padder's with his sick GS at Lawerence, still chirpy.
5) Jezza tending to Rogson's Freewind after it's swim in Omarama Saddle

Godzone alright !

Could ya give me the heads up on what tyres you running on the white and blue DR ? Wear rate ok on tar ? Currently running E07 on the front of my DR and wear rate been fantastic - but what shockers in the mud - how yours go in z mud ?

Some of you may know that Dave waited with me last year, when I was being helicoptered out of the Serpentine Church option. He also sorted the repatriation of my bike, and campervan and trailer back to Chch from Fairlie.

This year it was his turn, after hitting half a dozen sheep on Chestermains Rd, near Omakau. He was unable to reach his bike (further up the road than he wanted to crawl) but was found by local farmers after about half an hour. He used the same helicopter as I did to Dunedin Hospital, from which he was discharged on Monday.

He has a broken pelvis in two places, but will not be operated on, instead healing naturally on crutches. He's not very comfortable, but when I phoned him this morning he was spending a few days in Hanmer with his family, on the way back to New Plymouth.

I don't think his X-Challenge will be fixable, but happily Dave is, and he'll be riding again when he's well enough.

Got home last night ,done about 3000km.
That was awesome thanks Ryan ,Transalper and every one else who had a hand in organising it :niceone:
Mountie (GS800) myself and our mate BJ on his home made TDM kind of thing travelled as a team and clocked just over the 1000km.
When I googled the special mountain stage I went 'wow I've really got to try to get up there' so the DB for us became more a mission to get our big bikes through the two challenge sections rather than following all of the exact route and we missed out some of the stuff we'd done before.
Well 'that mountain' ,we battled it out for about 6 hours up there and it was the most prolonged period of extremely difficult riding I've ever done ,Mountie had to pick up the 800 numerous times ,BJ and I made it through upright (just) and I have respect for anyone who did that ride on a big bike (Shrek ! how does he do it ?)
This will go on the top of the list of of my greatest motorcycling achievements .
What is that mountain pass called by the way ?

Hi All. Thanks for the comments through I do detect a hint of the Big Omarama saddle being a "river to far" for some given the effort required to ride the route prior to it. It is embarising to admit now that Little Omarama Saddle is easier and that I could have made Big the Challenge and Little the main route? Not sure if would have done much good as it seems many/most took on the Awakino Challenge out of Kurow anyway.

I've been having web access issues at home and work is going stupid so I've not been posting for a couple of days. Oh and the fact that I'm compltely nackered. I even managed to have an accidental power nap at work yesterday while trying to read a report about traffic flows :msn-wink:

I'll answer the questions and PM's tonight all going well (with the web).

Cheers R

P.S. Yes that was me waving at you Woodman as you rode along Main South Road on Monday morning. Good to see the bike running ya crazy bugger:bleh:

I took my hat off to you guys quite literally, I was the guy on the XR650 that pulled up at the top of the zig zag section and spoke to you all briefly before you pushed on to the hut, you three looked happy but rooted. I had a hour wait there due to Cynna tipping his XR up on the zig zag and taking time to restart, i went from overheating to freezing my nuts of, in the future I'll be keep my own gear (jacket) on my own bike. Great effort and that TDM sounded fooken wicked with the supertrap hauling up to the pass.

Well I thought I better put my ten cents worth in.

First of all to Ryan and helpers – a big thanks for organising an awesome trip.

To all the guys and girls I meet on the way would love to catch up again. I am new to this but felt very welcome from a great bunch of people, a nice feeling.

I also know how to use my GPS a little better now - (sorry for going around the block guys)

The highlights for me were the Arari Gorge on Friday (thanks Matt), Awakino Zig Zag and the shingle scree, and of course Sunday.... seeing a KLR up to its tank in water.

I take my hat off to Shrek for riding a bus around what was more suited to a trail bike.

Thanks to Junkmanjoe, Monstaman (Twin Bro), Shrek and others who joined us through the day.

Well it was like this....... I was delirious through lack of food and my judgement was impaired somewhat. No seriously I had had nothing to eat since tea the prior night and my concentration was not what it should have been. Had a few moments that could have beeen nasty before that due mostly to malnutrition. I was going to stop in lawrence so would have got a bite to eat their but me and Umopom decided that I would ride on and meet up again in omakau.

Does anyone believe this???

Also the rut didn't look that deep and I like riding through muddy puddles.

lesson 1....pack enough food and drink to keep you going.
lesson 2....Ride a bit more conservatively when out in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks again for your help.
