They really were nasty at times, kinda steep too in places  Mrs Jatz has some loverly bruises from this off. She almost made it through

Geddes rd it was called Uground, according to the AA Otago road sign.
I thought that 2nd section was harder than the 1st as it was a lot longer & dam hard work :sweatdrop good to see you not hurt there Mrs Jatz apart from a bit of brusing you will have to get Jatz to give you a good rub with the deep heat :msn-wink:

Great ride thanks Ryan. Got back to Auckland yesterday intact and unscratched. We cut back to a 600km one-day DB, omitted the southern loop and Omarama, did Danseys instead of challenge one. Rode back via Lake Coleridge, Lees/Okuku, Rainbow (camped at Lake Tennyson), Wanganui River road and back to AKL.
This being my second partly finished DB means I will be back next year, but more likley on my other steed (WR450). Although, the Tiger and I have unfinished business with Awakino saddle - the Tiger might just have to do one more!
Thanks again, had an awesome time.

Thanks Ryan - fantastic ride!
I have to admit to one of the drownings - due to being led astray by jezzaNZ (well, that's my excuse anyway).
Highlight for me was the challenge/alternate route over Danseys - 99.999....% of the population don't get to see country like that.

Been camping in Wanaka - just got home. Thanks Ryan & Co for an awesome job well done. Some bits of the std route were challenging enuf for the Transalp on Mitas E07's. Not a good tyre choice for any place wet. Spent a fair bit of time following others and have obviously missed the 'out & in again' for Lawrence on my GPS. Felt like a proper dick Fortunately the JATZ's saved us with a couple of litres of spare fuel and we completed a modified route via Ranfurly :) Next year I'll dice up Ryans route into fuel stop sections. Fuel up and load up the next section. That will avoid the 200 point limit in the Zumo, and will hopefully make the GPS route a bit easier to follow without 20% of the waypoints getting binned.
Despite the botch up I really enjoyed Sunday. Saturday was a bit out of my comfort level. I don't really enjoy it when it gets into the real gnarley bits - I don't like situations where there is a very real likelihood of drowning the bike or having an off. Got too much $ tied up in my bike to trash it. Maybe I should have got something less pretty...
After seeing what the Saturday water crossings were like I kinda figured that the Omarama crossings would be higher than expected and was going to opt out and head thru Danseys anyway. Glad I did.
Great to catch up and meet some new folks. Roll on next year. Might have to consider something more "suitable" for the job :msn-wink:

I NEED an ADV bike....
I know where there is one for sale. One little old lady rider:msn-wink:. Only thing is you might need longer legs:bleh:
....Dusty alright ,AT was running a bit rat shit on the way home -having trouble breathing I think....
Maybe get in touch with Whatastoner. He has a tube of foam filter that he could slip over the K&N. We stop so he could change it just out of Cromwell and it was well dirty then i.e. doing it's job. Silly filter placement on those 650 @'s
....Highlight for me was the challenge/alternate route over Danseys - 99.999....% of the population don't get to see country like that.
I agree but that's the beauty of it. Spectacular scenery, "challenging" riding and so remote that bugger all ever go there.
....Next year I'll dice up Ryans route into fuel stop sections. .....
Might have to consider something more "suitable" for the job :msn-wink:
Nest year I won't be so rushed and will have a better sliced and diced GPS file - he says with optimism now.
I though any bike was "suitable" even GS's and Tigers :bleh:

Thank you Ryan, the DBK1 has to be one of the best rides I’ve ever done, the people I meet where a great bunch of people, I’ll be back next year.
Many thanks to those who helped me with the flat tyre and subsequent crash, got back to Jafaland yesterday and finally got the shoulder checked by the doctor today, small fracture in the collar bone and dislocated AC joint. The pain killers did wonders to get me home.
Seems like there are plenty of photos up already here’s a couple of mine, that’s Rogerh dewatering the KTM640 after it failed swimming lessons 101.

Another Alex isssue that needs raising is the people who signed up for the breakfast on the sunday morning, of the 10 odd who signed up only 3 actually went and got theirs. I'd say thats the last time the pie cart man will go out of his way to help the DB in the future.
While i'm having a bitch, those who either left their bikes idling for extended periods before leaving on sunday morning and then rarking it up leaving the camp should also think about how they do things:angry:
Common guys Ryan and crew have done amazing things to make the DB better every year then some people go and piss off the people who help make it work so well.
OH, thanks Ryan for putting on a fantastic route :woohoo:

:
I agree with the rarking it up part however I didn't notice anyone idling for extended periods. Onthe whole I thought the guys on Sunday morning were pretty considerate low voices & the like. At that time of the morning - which wasn't tooearly there isn't much ambient noise.
A cmpground is a campground & those that stay in there have to be resonably tolerant of other noises, - be it boats being loaded up & driving out before dawn, kids crying, the loud game of uka by middle aged parents etc.In saying that - I dislike staying in campgrounds for the noise issues.
Now I'll go before someone strats making accusations about snoring :chase:

Agree with that 100% and use this technique on nearly all river crossings. I blasted over this crossing and all the others 5 weeks prior with no probs at all, but in this case I was one of the ones that went down when the front wheel was immediately taken out by two large slippery rocks one after the other. For deep crossings that are predominately large slippery rocks I find being seated using your legs as support gives more control and is far more successful. Although not as much fun as standing up on the pegs and blasting across, it saves potentially falling off and getting an airbox full of water with the bollocks associated of resuscitating your bike.
Even the best of riders will get caught out by a hidden rock, rut or what have you, the best thing that can be done is to learn from it to improve your riding techniques for the next ride. I learnt a very valuable lesson in this situation, go down in a river in front of 25 other riders and a video camera and you'll be pummelled with smart arse comments for weeks

I found sitting down much better for control in the water, when a 950 loaded with 2 weeks of camping gear starts to get unbalanced you need to be able to correct it in a hurry otherwise it's gone.
Otherwise I agree wholeheartedly with the rest of the technique, I only learnt that on the DB1K and it worked wonders going through all those streams towards the Omarama saddle.

My theory - use any way you can get across without dropping the bike & drowning it. Standing up & doing lovely clutch slipping & trials techniques aint gonna help you at all when there's a big fukka of a rock in your way or the rocks beneath your rear tyre are slippery as crap.

Or a rock big enough to park the bike on...
My technique involves one or more of...
Standing, sitting, kneeling, walking...
Whatever is needed.
Has worked perfectly so far.
Touching sooo much wood now, you'd think I've got shares in a forestry plantation.

Way too much information Nordie.
Anyway on river crossing technique, I am firmly in the padmei camp.
By all means go in standing but if you know its real bigbouldery then sitting is definitely the best. If you get stuck on a boulder or can't get over it then drop the clutch and try and sorta jerk yourself over it. May have to try a few times and may shift some rocks but it seems to work for me. Balance is everything on a big bike cos once they start going down they are very hard to stop.

Ummm - Renthal RC high bars, clutch slave guard, springs then tank. Looking on TM for a cheep XC tank or might go big birtha and get an Acerbis 6.6gal. Also looking for cheep seat on TM to modify (taller and maybe a little wider towards the back).
Big blue heading to Russia via Auckland. Very jealous. Wish I could go with it. I'll let you know if the guy starts up a blog or similar.

Seems OK to me. Need to sort out my right hand a little though. Seem to want to gas on as I use the front brake. Nearly dumped it once cause of this. Suspect I need to tweak cable slack and grips a little.

Now I seen that before and think it's maybe a leaver position thing. In/out/up/down I can't remember but you probably grabbing front brake leaver with a different area of your fingers.

On a weapon like that, get used to holding on with both hands all the time. One or two fingers with the clutch and brake. No more.
You can make those things go scary fast so long as you can hang on..... I seriously need bigger kahunas for that.

Had another look today and rotating levers down will help. Already tried one finger braking and that made a difference/worked.
WW was taking pics of me crossing a little stream and ripping up a hill. On one run (I was standing) it very nearly left me behind. Really got to get over the bars! The suspenders (even in their under sprung state) are bloody nice. Chucked it at a few rocks on the "Rockytapu" and it just floated over them. Going to have to recalibrate the "must avoid" mechanism too.
All (bloody) good fun.
