Alex Holiday Park is happy to run the Linen, Bed and Kitchen Facilities deal they had last year. $35 per person. Please PM me if you want a bed at the Holiday Park. First in first served as numbers a limited to 29 beds. List of people is on my webpage (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/db1k11f.html).
Pre Ride BBQ on Friday Night
The Gladstone pub in Fairlie are happy to host us for a BBQ again this year. $12 per person. Please PM me if you want to attend the BBQ. List of people is on my webpage (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/db1k11f.html). I need to let our hosts know numbers by Christmas.
Route Information
Over on my website there are two pages. This link (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/db1k11f.html) takes you to the page with the Roll Chart, Accommodation lists and BBQ list but nothing else. Only click this link (http://advroutes.org.nz/db1k11m.html) if you want to see the route maps, GPS files and route information on the MAPS page.
As with last year there will be $10 gate fee for Black Forest Station.
Ride Etiquette/Safety
The runs to date have shown that small groups (2-4) of mates is best for the one day run. The same applies to the two day riders i.e. form smaller groups. As with previous runs there is no support for the one day riders. All Riders are expected to carry everything they need from food and water, first aid gear, tools, spares etc. Also there is limited cell phone coverage for most of the route. A sweep vehicle is not be officially organised but is somebody is willing please let me know. The same applies to a vehicle to carry luggage to Alex Holiday Park and back.
Ride Stickers
These will be available for all those who attempt the ride. They will cost $5 each. 50 have been ordered. First in first served at the BBQ on the Friday night.
Money
I will collect $10 Black Forest fee, $12 BBQ cost and sell you a $5 sticker (if you want one) all at the BBQ. If you stay at the Gladstone or Alex Holiday Park, please pay your accommodation moneies to them directly.
Calendars
Just so I have a rough idea of the number of riders please add you name to one of the calendars below if you intend to join the ride.
* ONE Day riders Calendar (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=2689&day=2011-1-22)
* TWO Day riders Calendar (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=2687&day=2011-1-23)
Final Word
There is no "entry fee", there is no registration, this is not an organised ride in the legal sense. This ride is simply a bunch of people following the same route at their own pace along publicly accessible tracks. I take no responsibility for any issues be they self inflicted or not. I will however endeavour to ensure that there are no right of passage issues along the route. You all need to ensure your bike its up to the task. There will not be a scrutineering or similar.
Be there or be square
Right feel free to use this thread to organise how you will get to Fairlie, accommodation etc.
Cheers R
P.S. if you are not a KB member and would like to join the ride please contact me at advroutes@gmail.com

Just wonderin', do we have a support/baggage vehicle for the 2 dayers? Anyone know anyone? Mrs B and I could probably carry everything we need if required, but I suspect some might have trouble..... I know someone who could do it, but they'd probably want money for fuel and accomodation - I'd pay but I was roundly jeered last year when I suggested a similar arrangement.

Like I said, we can probably carry everything we need, but not everyone is driving a small v-twin tank. As Nordie says, in past years a vehicle has been available. If no one wants it, that pretty much answers the question.
How much do you really need to carry from fairlie to Fairlie ?
Everything I need in Alexandra. The last time I did the 2 dayer I was pretty glad not to have to carry a blasted tent around with me (clearly not an issue this time), and the guy who dropped his sump plug was happy to have the assistance of the wider Nordie family.

Maybe a day crossing rivers is in order, or just one river (middle of the Lees valley ride) back and forth many times adjusting technique.
I'll be ok without support vehicle this time, going to leave the video equipment at home so will have more than enough space for my sleeping bag and change of socks in that hole.
If I was carting a weeks worth of camping gear I'd go for either support vehicle to take it or a place in fairlie to store what i didn't need while on the Dusty ride.

Theres a few heading down but no real plan as far as I know .
I'll start a separate thread and see if we can coordinate something.

I notice a small red highlighted line of text on the route webpage that I think should also be mentioned here....
Please do not attempt to ride this route outside the organised weekend as the route crosses private land.
You need to get in touch with cooneyr for land owner details if you are thinking about it
Same for last years route, there are two sections that I'm aware of that you should consult land owners over first.

Transalper

I did last year but lost my audio near the end of day one.
There were a couple of other kinds of helmet camera floating about too.
I've done some work on a DVD of it but still have a bit to go from memory.
I had planned to finish the Capital Coast DVD first and that's almost done now... except I'm riding and some other stuff instead of editing at the moment.
Since there's a few new areas not previously taped by me I had started thinking about recording but it means emptying my backpack in order to stick the recorder in there and lots of mucking around at the stops.
This clip from the Serpintine Rd is the only bit of last years DB that I have put online so far... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncX8mFvat1c
I'm sure I've seen at least one other by someone else too.

Hi All. Roll chart and fuel stop info is now up on my website (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/db1k11f.html). I'd suggest you have a think about your fuel stop strategy before the ride cause it turns out one of the critical locations (Omakau) is only open till mid day on Saturday and not at all on Sunday. This will make life a bit difficult for those with less than 270km of range who will either need to deviate for 26km (and 26km back) down to Alex for more fuel. This would make the min range needed 230km.
Route length options -
The maximum route length is about 1120km if you ride the options to maximise the route length. This is doing Danseys Pass (not doing Challenge 1), Challenge 2 and the Scenic Loop.
The shortest route is about 1057km though this involves doing Challenge 1 (will be time consuming), not doing Challenge 2 and not doing the Scenic Loop.
For those who want to do technical stuff the mid length option of doing Challenges 1 and 2 and the Scenic Loop with will total of about 1070km.
For those that are less comfortable on technical terrain do Danseys Pass, not do Challenge 2 and do the Scenic Loop with a total of about 1110km.

Bloody hick town garages :innocent: Kinda put a spanner in the works but not impossible to work with. If people drop into Lawrence hopefully most can handle the 270kms to Omarama. Lawrence is the least off route fuel option.

Ah Bugger. It was pointed out to me that there were some issues with the roll chart that I've now fixed. Couple of insignificant spelling issues, couple of instruction changes and most importantly the details to do with the Challenge and Scenic loops (i.e. to skip a challenge goto cell X) didn't appear in the PDF. I've taken care of all of these and re uploaded the PDF.
For those of you who printed the roll chart already you can either reprint the whole thing (can't just to some pages as some cells have shifted a page) or update the old roll chart by hand. The cells to compare are

Rollers in the top and bottom corners to keep the max amount of roll chart in view are nice to have. Bit of steel flat from the inner mount of your left hand guard to the back of the box seems to work fine. Don't use alloy rod for the attachment - that's how I lost my last one (fatigued the alloy)
Biggest problem with them is the vibrations make the chart unravel. To try and fix this you put more tension on the nylocks and then you can't roll it forward

Can,t see Ryans pic,with my crap conection.:shit:
Used a "split" 1ltre "SYSTEMA"--same as Ryans, only divided into two 500ml compartments. Then it will sit on/in the handlebars central brace, held down by a couple of bits of tube rubber bolted on. Used 12mm wooden dowl for axles & put blue screw tops---(tops with "pullup part removed on bench grinder)----off,ve 'PUMP' bottles,on.(Pushon fit)
To retain the other end,I used Docking (castrating:blink:) rubber rings,in a groove, put in with a chainsaw file.
Rollers @ either end of box were 2.5 wire with plastic drinking straws threaded on.
Sits on bike O.K.--- but restricts the view/access to speedo& key etc,a bit.
Also a bit "fiddley" to fix ends of roll on,but I never had trouble with vibration moveing roll,---goin too slow,I spose.

My snoops have come up with some more useful info. In the Alex holiday park there is a fast food caravan (I'm sure these use to be called pie carts) that closed just as most turned up last year. It serves up burgers, F&C etc. Is anybody interested in this such that we should ask him to stay open a little longer or is this a bit old school (can help but think of Footrot Flats movie - The Dogs Tale).
Also we are working on getting the Omakau Petrol station open for 2 hours around mid day. Will let people know more as things develop.

Hmmmm maybe a bit of a dilemma here for the one dayers.
Am I right when I calculate that once we leave Alex if we don't go out of our way to Lawrence and Omakau is closed (Sat 0830-1200) it is 402km's between Alex and Omarama?
Also looks like it is 309.4km from Lawrence to Omarama

Not quite.
Lawrence to Omakau via the Challenge (longest route - adds 10km) is 171km. The following is me checking from the roll chart. Don't include Cell 182 i.e. the non-challenge loop, cause you cant do both it and the challenge.
Cell 160 - 8.1
Cell 170 - 50.4
Cell 175 - 41.5
Cell 179 - 32.6
Cell 188 - 38.7
Total km = 171.3km
Omakau to Omarama is 105km. Again me checking.
Cell 194 - 38.5
Cell 201 - 39.0
Cell 207 - 28.1
Total km = 105.6
Lawrence to Omarama is therefore 276.9km. Allow for a bit of error in this so say you need 290km range.
Update
Another thought occurred to me. Both petrol stations in Omarama are only open to 8pm i.e. may close a bit early for some of the one day riders. The 24hr (Eftpos and Credit Card available) fuel stop at Otematata is 25km further than Omarama. This would mean a leg of 302km from Lawrence to Otematata.

Hi All. The snoops snooping has paid off. The good bugger Tony from the Omakau Garage will be opening from 1130 to 1330 on the Sunday especially for the two day riders. This is based on some rough guess of speeds and people leaving Alex at 7am. It you are a slower than average rider please leave earlier.
This means we have a couple of options.
Fuel at Alex then ride to Omakau for fuel (275km) then ride to Omarama for fuel (106km).
Fuel at Alex then ride to Lawrence for fuel (120km), then ride to Omakau for fuel (171km) then ride to Omarama for fuel (106km).
Fuel at Alex then ride to Lawrence for fuel (120km), then ride to Omarama for fuel (277km).
Whatever you do please stop in at Omakau to make Tony's efforts worth it please i.e. option 1 or 2.
Playing with these distances and checking them is doing my head in!
Cheers R.

Will be riding the Africa Twin if the new CDI turns up in time.
Failing that, the Yamaha.

Gidday. Just finished the GPS file now. Going to check it through, test on my GPS, then make and upload the webpage, and update the Dusty's main page tomorrow if sprog behaves. It will be up before the weekend is out if he doesn't.
Good luck with the CDI. The RD01 is a unique bike that got plenty of attention last year.

So you fellas with ya new MAP60 GPSs got them set to record tracks to the Data card if you want to record your full adventures without running out of space or quota on the internal memory?
'Menu' - 'Tracks' - 'Setup' - 'Data Card Setup' - make sure there's a tick in the box by 'Log tracks To data Card'
Now even if you fill or overflow your internal memory quota you will still get all your tracks on the Data Card for grabbing later on the PC via the 'mass storage mode'.

You must be joking.
Takes a little playing with and experimenting to get the hang of.
Don't think it would have been to much use for navigation up the Clarance as there's not many track options there and you would have been just exploring but you can now see where you went.
Get in touch and I'll get you the next step, maybe create a couple of navigation exercises for homework.

My experience (Etrex Legend HCx) suggest that you need to turn on the overwrite option even when writing to a card else your track log just stops.

Bloody late notice and I apologise for this, but we all need to be carrying fire extinguishers. There are two areas where we pass through forest blocks. The fire extinguishers you want are 450gm aerosol ABC type. The red one in the pic below (Fire Exit) and the First Alert Tundra (http://www.firstalert.co.nz/wawcs0142795/tundra_extinguishers.html) are available for $20-$25 from Mitre 10, Mega, Placemakers, Bunnings and Briscoes stores.

The GPS file is now uploaded onto my website (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/db1k11f.html). My website allows people to upload directly to their GPS units if they are attached to a USB port. Those with GPSMAP62 or GPSMAP78 will need to download the file to their computer and then upload using Basecamp or Mapsource. This is due to my webpages and Garmin Communicator not working together very well. With others help I hope to resolve this shortly.

The garmin communicator plugin is known to be a bit glitchy, some days working, some days giving a 'plugin not unlocked successfully' error so if you get that just right click and 'save as' the file and load it through mapsource or whatever you are using then also.

Might i suggest no ciggys when stopped in the at risk areas.
We had a little fire at work on break up day from a discarded ciggy butt which had been dropped almost an hour before the flames appeared.
The smoker who dropped it said "they say it happens but I thought it was just a myth".
Apparently he flicks em butts out the car window all the time, no wonder there are so many roadside fires in summer if a lot of people are doing that.
First time I'd ever actually seen it happen too, but now we know the risk is real.
I guess the bikes actually could be a risk too, heard one or two storeys of bike related fires so something about better safe than sorry and keeping the land owners thinking we're all very responsible aye.

Unless your bike being on fire is the cause of the grass catching, you ain't likely to know you started one, it'll be they guys half an hour after you dealing with it, or you dealing with the one the guy half an hour in front of you started.
Best start early, ride fast, be in front. That'll work.
Do stones bouncing off bashplates or in to each other spark enough? Have to be pretty unlucky me thinks.

I've put good money into the Motard tires and hadn't given the 21 and 18's any thought. They were on the bike when brought it. they are kenda and cheng shin both about 1/3 worn hence i didnt give a second thought. I been for a blast out the river and they seemed shit but I would think not too bad considering they are a road trail compromise. Am i risking too much cheaping out on the tyre thing. The budget is tight (new chain sprockets and the other bits and bobs I've had to get as i'm a total noob to this) so would rather not have to buy new tyres untill i see if this my thing.

If you don't have the cash then probably be fine on what you have, Ryans doing it on the big KTM using E07s same as I had on my DR today.
May be a few times you'll wish you had more bite but it shouldn't be a show stopper.
We only had to push him once or twice on the route scouting run and your bike is lighter.
I had a shinko on the back of the DR on the scouting run and managed ok but since i already have half worn more agressive tyres on my other rims I'll use them.
The route is sharp so may well cut up ya tires a bit so almost a pity to buy a new set as they will be looking quite used by the end of the weekend.
Shiny new bash plates will be well worn in by then too.

well your nice new square knobs will have at least one nice n round edge on them and probably some cuts and chunks missing too.
The only flat we had to deal with was from a nail or similar on a tame bit of dirt road but I was sure my front was about to get flat with several hits it took on the main challenge section.

mite be a better option than the cheng shin front? last thing i want to be doing is repairing flats due to shit rubber, riding the 1000km is going to be enough let alone dealing with that type of distraction. 30+ deg tyre repairs dont appeal!

Nothing too nasty, a few ascents and descents on rocky sections like this pic. Not detrimental to tyres if you pick nice lines that allow you to keep up momentum and avoid spinning up the back wheel too much on the rocky climbs. Personally these sections were some of the most fun bits :niceone:

Good comment re spark arrestors, in conjunction with each bike carrying a fire extinguisher. One of the forestry routes is near major forest fire event just before Xmas. They have had rain since but a couple of days of Norwest will make the locals real nervous again.

To be honest I've never really had to use one in anger. I've done one CCA (08) but could get away with following others for most of it and we followed an old one around Banks Peninsular but I could have guessed most of the route before leaving home. Neither of these were really challenging. The same goes for the GPS files. I won't be bothering with a roll chart or the GPS for the dusty - I know the route rather well know. I'm hanging out for somebody to make something up so that I can get really stuck into it ;) ;).

Hi all, I need some one local (Christchurch) if possible to help me in setting up a borrowed a Garmin Zumo 550. I used unit last year and could only load 50 point map.(I am not that IT savy) This year I need to load 250 point map and ensure all settings are what they should be to help me have another go at cracking the 1 day.
Cheers Rod
PS might be a few green or brown bottles involved.....

Well, my preferred bottle is more of a clear/whitey colour but playing with gps s is so much fun I'd almost have to offer you a drink.
TimG has a Zumo so may know best but I would like to give it a go and I suspect Ryan would be keen to look at the zumo workings too.
They (garmin gps in general) normally accept 250 point Routes only in the 'off road' mode and are limited to 50 point routes if you try using them on the 'on road' mode.

I knew someone would be watching....That sounds very promising. I dont need all the bluetooth stuff just the basic deal. Last year it worked really well until we took a wrong turn and I think it recalculated and sent us up a climb I would have prefered to be on my enduro bike on.
Right then we need to chat. Josh has my number. Or how do you discreetly make contact? PM? thingy

This is the second contact I've had about Zumo's not working with the 250 point files. I'd love to have a look but time is rather limited at the moment.
The Zumo's try to be "clever" for you but in fact are only clever if you never leave the seal. This ride is clearly not about staying on the seal so those with Zumo's (and probably Nuvi's) need to look into changing the routing mode to "off road". As TA said most of the Garmin GPS units will handle 250 points in off road mode and only 50 when in on road.
For the Zumo 550's the manual is here (http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/1369_OwnersManual.pdf) and you need to look at page 46 and 47. To try and summarise you need to select the "spanner" (blue box with the white spanner), then select "navigation", then change "route preferance" from "fastest time" (probably on this setting) to "off road". This is most likely the same for other models of Zumo and the Nuvi's.
TimG can you add your 2c worth in here. I'm sure you've played with this before.
Cheers R

I run a Colorado and have had similiar issues with it being too smart, e.g. skipping points 41-50 cause it's shorter from point 40 to point 51 than it is from point 40 to point 41 or some such reason.
Fran, your Oregan might do this too as I think the software is very similiar to the Colorado.

I've a feeling that most units will do this. I was sitting in Nelson when testing the route files and it (LegendHCx) was going to skip some points and start me at Cave or thereabouts. There should be no issues with this on the DB as the route but if you are concerned check the point numbering to ensure your following the sequence correctly.
None of you are going to get lost, dont know what your worring about :msn-wink:

PS might be a few green or brown bottles involved..... Yup, I have a Zumo 550. Happy to help. I'm in Rolleston. Give me a call on 0273490527 and come on out some time. haven'y loaded this years route yet. The Zumo only handles 200 points. I use some software from Ryans site to reduce the file to 199 points and roberts yer mothers bruther. Cheers, Tim.

mmm, that's a bit of vital info to know.
Does it keep the via point names when you filter it? Ryan has labelled them to help guide us.

Don't think the Legend or gpsmap60 or Map62s will skip points unless you ride off route and through another point out of order where it will then pick up where you have re-entered.
Only time I seen the Legend mess up was when start and finish points were the same place.... navigate route... go ... but you're already there so I'm done!!
It should take you to every via point in the order they are in the route.
Temporarily for demo purpose I added an extra point to the start of the route at my current location then told it to start me navigating 'off road'.
Since I'm already on the route now it is directing me to the next point being the point labelled 'A1 Start'.
When you're off the route or in the middle of it and tell it to start navigating from fresh from where you are it will take you to the closest point in the route which from here had been A13 but now I extended the route to start with my current location as point 1 everything is in order.
If you miss a via point the Map62s (and I thought the Legend did too) will keep direction you back to it unless you actually pass another via point in the Active Route point list (see pic) at which time it will continue on from there.
In the off road mode there should be no off route recalculation round roads or telling you to u-turn to get you back on track.
A side note here...
On the DB gps files Ryan has labelled any via points that require a turn from the current road/track with turn info to help guide us.
On the 62s I had to set the guidance text to display always or it wouldn't show in Off Road navigation. The Legend IIRC was fine by default.
Here's some screen shots of mine in action...
The Active Route - I'm at the place 'DEMO POINT1' and 'A1 Start' is next to visit.
228740
The Dashboard, don't know if the ETA at Destination or Time to destination fields will work in Off Road Mode and if the do I know they will not be very accurate until quite close to the end because it's off road navigation !
228739
The Compass, well it's a compass pointing at the next via point.
228738
The Map view, my main screen. This is zoomed out heaps I'm sure you can tell.
228741
The Map view at a half decent level... follow the red pointer and the purple line to the next point this time called 'A1 Start' but other times called things like 'A95 Left'
228737
A close up of how the route goes in straight lines while we wiggle along the roads and sometimes into the void of no roads and still we follow the purple line as much as we can (at least mine is purple).
This is a random shot so my position pointer is not on screen but my cursor is. (some of you will know this, some will not)
228742
I really just posted this because I can, because I just worked out how to get the pictures from the gps.

Correct... as in post #1 with most the updates...
22nd January
Start in Fairlie
Modified southern route
Overnight in Alex for two day riders
BBQ at Gladstone Pub in Fairlie on Friday Night
Costs - $5 for sticker, $10 for Black Forest.
And a whole lot more info..... back in post #1.
Also I notice an ever increasing few bits in red on the Adv Routes site (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/db1k11f.html) to read such as not riding outsude the designated time without first getting in touch with the land owners in several parts of the route, talk to Ryan for contact info and details etc etc.

Nah not really that serious. Do I need linen etc for the first nite at the pub? Says it's supplied for the 2nd nite but not sure about the 1st nite. I'm travelling real lite (well apart from the 20kilo toolkit).
Also the last bit of Day 1 where it does a loop over the highway bit - is that a pretty good bit? I'm thinking I may miss that bit out if I'm getting tired & short cut it tothe campground for a shower & food. Would I be missing anything extra special?
Also We'll need accom for the last nite after the event too I spose...

When are you going? Where you staying in CHCH? Are you doing Orari?gorge?
Still actually a bit iffy if I am going at all. Possibly riding to fairlie on Friday and back on Monday, so more time at home etc.
Will know more tomorrow, mrs Woodman is getting the right royal runaround with this redundancy thing. They were supposed out find out Wednesday but are stringing everyone along.

Harden up ya pussy. Think of the guys doing the 1 day run!
Where do you mean - Omakau to Alex or Cromwell to Alex? Cromwell to Alex is via a couple of pretty cool tracks (Carricktown and Hawksburn). Some good views out over Clyde, Clyde Dam and Alex from the eastern end of the Hawksburn. Omakau to Cromwell is via a track called the Thompsons Gorge which is nice but has about 19 gates!
Nup. Just loaded it. All sweet. Extended the route to take in Lawrence just so i don't miss the fuel there
There is a note with point B39 and BX39 as a hint about this. Don't want to send people there unnecessarily.
Cause those with Zumo's and Nuvi's are having problems and some users are a bit baffled I'm going to make a 50 points per route file as well as per other years. This will not be as pretty as pervious years cause I'm just going to carve up the routes into 50 point lots i.e. you may have to change routes mid way through a track. You all still need to change to off road routing for this file to work correctly cause there ain't no roads where some of the tracks are!

I read somewhere in zumo forums (or was it ADV Forum) that it would be wise to also turn off the 'off route recaculation' option which is found in the same menu area as on/off road routing.

Hi there, name's John and I met up with some of you last year in Alex and rode day-2 on my 955i Tiger (road tyres) and had a blast. So much so that I'm keen to ride the whole event this year, albeit on better tyres. I added myself to the 2-day list and will be with a non Kiwirider mate on a GS1100. We are riding from north of Auckland on Monday, Molesworth and Lees Valley. I heard that some may ride from CHCH on Friday through the gorge and wondered if we might join you for that (details ??). We'll probably tent at Fairlie and Alex for accom.
Done Molesworth several times but never Lees Valley. Any tips on Lees would be most welcome.
Is it too late to sign on for the BBQ on Friday at Fairlie? (x2).
