Speaking of racing, has Ruapuna got another dipper or extra elevation added to it?

Can someone please tell me what volunteer service I can do tomorrow?
I'm sure places like library might need help (Esp Cant. Uni Central Lib).
Any ideas? I'm not trying to be a hero. Just sitting on my ass while people do the work seems wrong. Also I have nothing to do tomorrow.
Can I cook your breakfast? Really. Anything?
Cheers
Dredging this up again - I see on the TV One News last night that with the University being closed, there's organised groups of students racing around with wheel-barrows and shovels, helping with the clean-up.
Farking brilliant...

What happened to the "you made that bed, your gonna fucking lie in it now".
Crims shouldn't have sprinkler systems - that would stop them having prison fires.

Still no water here, no portaloos, and no idea when the water's going to be back. There was a flurry of activity in the street when I went out this afternoon with holes being dug about the place but still no water yet. Maybe they were fixing the sewage pipes 'cos they're broken too. Oh well, the house is OK, although the cracks are getting bigger as the shocks continue and the power's on. I'm better off than many.

Yep, at least I wasn't moving out on saturday morning because the house was collapsing like some around here.
I was amused by the people that had a look around where they live, decided everything was ok and carried on as normal, didn't seem to occur to some that what they were flushing down their loo could be pouring out of a broken pipe on the way to bromley into some poor bastards back yard.

Like the dumb shits I've heard on the radio who live by the Avon river and don't have water, so they're using buckets of water from the river to flush their toilets! Where exactly do they think they're flushing it? If the water pipes are broken then the sewer pipes probably are too!

:( our building managers still arent giving us the all clear. I went in to the building today, and no damage I can see except one of my motorbike models (thankfully the cheap one not the real expensive minichamps one) took a dive and broke the fairing.
And people laugh at my "Integrated, floor level, horizontally dispersed filing system". Well all that shit on the floor is still on the floor, so suck on that.
We've had some furniture fall over but I reckon two hours work and we're good to go..... when they let us back in.

they're collating the updates from everyone.Interesting site. I had a chuckle when I saw the Tourism Canterbury One - the japs must be over the moon with all the shit to take photo's of now :D
And why am I still up? Well I went outside to take my pre bed leak on the lawn and heard the sound of running water - most unusual since there's nothing coming out of the taps. I tracked it down to a new spring I now have in the garden and a moat around part of the house. It looks as though the guys working in the street this afternoon have fixed the breaks and got the water back on but the mains are broken where they come into the house - not surprising really given the 50mm gap around the house now. So I've turned the water off at the street and told the council who have told civil defence. The guys I spoke too were great - very helpful. They said they're manning the phones 24hours at the moment which is great.
Anyway, off to bed. I might have a sleep in since there's no work.

I see the media are picking up on the Selwyn council not communicating - some questions being asked now. If Waimak can aim at 600 house inspections per day but Selwyn have done seven inspections only it says something....Fed Farmers seem to be doing what the Council should - big meeting/pissup/question time in Darfield Thurs night - even got Brewery support. Why couldn't the SDC do this ?
Big step up/off local bridge poorly posted - just men at work sign - viisited by MNZ steward yesterday who didn't pick the 8 inch step on the bridge and was lucky not to have square wheels on his BMW...LOL

That 5.1 at 7.49am was a bit strange - located under Heathcote/Woolston. Hope this isn't a sign of more under the city cause they will hurt more even if lower magnitude.
On the 6th story of a 7 story building on Victoria street. Feels like I had one to many or I'm on a ship. Just gently sways around.
I've got to work this week but if anybody (city or rural) wants a hand over the weekend let me know. Our place is fine. Got tools (sledgy, chainsaw, shovel, etc), will travel. I grew up on farm so more than happy to do some hard labour rather than just driving a PC.

Me to.
I am stuffed went home to check after the last big one to check pets and home as we had no power at work.
To find my chimney loose at the base.
Had checked last night as well and was OK, so pulled it down and patched up the roof.
As I brought some tiles last night to make sure I had some if they were needed.
It was in the middle of the house so if it fell, I would have a big hole though the roof.
Funny thing was I warned the neighbour as there's was looking bad now as well.
So he did the same and a guy next to him was doing the same.
Four chimneys were taken down this morning.
Do not need a open fire ban, just a earth quake.:innocent:
So check yours as they seem to be doing most of the damage.

Well that aftershock this morning was really bad. There's people crying and shaking and just freaking out and getting really really scared it's quite hard to watch. The quakes are definitely taking their toll on the people in Christchurch, the worst part is not knowing when it's going to hit or how long before it all ends. I don't have kids but the people I know who do are fucking stressed, they're scared shitless while still trying to take care of their children who are pretty much traumatised by the whole ordeal. As time goes on the aftershocks get more and more stressfull for everyone, the news really doesn't do it justice there is a huge amount of tension in chch atm, even if people are safe they're scared fucking shitless.

Just an "out there" kind of idea. No doubt it is a completely impractical idea but I got thinking....
There must be a load of us willing to open our homes up to these families to give them a break away from what seems like a constant emotional and mental drain. I for one am but realise the expense would not be practical.
I am also quessing that despite the trauma few would want to leave town or their homes....but maybe a plea to Air NZ to get some people out for a few days?

We are all stuck where we are really, you can't just leave your home behind and suddenly feel safe.. Most people at work wanted to leave today after that first quake but only one person left, and he had already had major home damage in the first one. The reality is that your bills are always there and you just have to keep on working no matter what happens just to put a roof over your head, even in an emergency. Leaving town is not an option for almost everyone.

Best news today-after 4 & 1/2 days my old cat Marco came home, skinny, dusty and tired but OK!
Yay for the cat :woohoo::woohoo::woohoo: Bummer about the house. :(
I'm kind of over work for this week already, maybe because I was out there at 8am on Saturday morning wondering what was happening at home the whole time, makes all the other jobs I should be doing this week seem a bit insignificant.
Rode the bike to work today though, very therapeutic. Weather for tomorrow looks a bit crap though, my piles of silt that were drying out will turn back into mud

Thats great news. Our cat freaks the fuck right out at every aftershock. He has finally calmed down. As has SWMBO who is asleep in the comfy chair with cat on lap. And a right gory episode of True Blood on.... Thats therapeutic I reckon so I've left them to it.
that stress response is a kicker though: SWMBO has been really on edge, as have I. But I expect the worst in every situation so when an aftershock comes its like "Is that all you've got, asshole?" Stupid I know

A very good idea indeed.
We have a spare room with a double bed and a an inflatable air mattress. Anyone who wishes to have a break away until the after shocks settle down would be welcome.

Yeah well thats the human for ya, adults in stall the fear in kids... shit the chances are slim of more damage, people need to relax and go with the flow, however I understand those that were in some places will be packing... but moving ya kids out of town is darft, more chance they will be hurt in the drive from the airport to were ever they go...
well ya get the idea of what I mean its hysteria.

HOT, so glad you've got your Marco back. You are a pair of survivors!
It must be so unnerving with all the aftershocks. You may know in your head that all should be well, but that doesn't stop the adreneline and your heart racing.
Yesterday a man from the earthquake commission, said that people should realise that structures and buildings that survived the initial quake undamaged should be more than able to handle any aftershocks without failing. I pass this on in the hope that it may help reassure some of you suffering all these shakes.

I was happy that our house was not going to fall down, but it took the engineer from the council having a look around to convince the mrs that it was safe. Better than our friends down the road a bit who are now living in a caravan in their driveway. Now all we need is a working sewer system back and life can carry on until someone can get to our place and give us a verdict on how fixable it is.
More importantly, I finally got a decent nights sleep last night. Didn't notice anything, but more importantly mrs didn't notice anything so she wasn't waking me up to ask me if I felt the last aftershock :zzzz::zzzz::zzzz:

Me thinks it may have something to do with giving the kids a place they can start to feel safe again and enable them to heal emotionally. Trust me, they know what frightens them and it isn't the adults. This isn't something like going to the dentist, where you can shadow over the bad bits to make it sound good, this is real.

The dogs are holding up well - the stud boy is being staunch for his girls who are both a bit clingy but he wants reassurance too.
A friend we work in with breeding says one of her bitches thinks the aftershocks are laid on for her entertainment - gets on the bed & jumps up & down barking - loves the bouncy castle...

My sister lives in the new subdivision in Brooklands, her brand new house is to be demolished but it is still livable and they can stay there for about a year, until they are ready to rebuild another home. I helped my sister move on the day of the Quake last Saturday as she already had planned to move that particular weekend, talk about weird co-incidence.
The flat that she moved out of was in Kingsford Street at Burwood and that area was swimming in silt including a badly damaged flat!
Hope you guys are coping OK where you are, hang in there.

Is the south island wanting to shake of some excess land, like that pointy out bit...hell I feel for all you people down there.
Haha - that 'pointy bit' is the aftermath of one of NZ's largest volcanoes - the harbour of Lyttelton is the centre of the old volcano and the entrance is where the side fell over. Apparently Quail Island in the harbours centre is the 'plug'.
I wonder if there is any shit still brewing up under there? If anyone sees dead fish floating on the top of the harbour water feel free to post!
Joking aside it is talk like that that is getting annoying - Mrs B's sister just called and apparently some geek put in the co-ordinates of the last shake and it was literally over the road from me! She was ready to pack up and move 2 kms to her mums. But really - where in Christchurch are you going to go to? If you are packing the best bet is to get out of town completely - way out!
Me I'm staying, the fucker has already had a go at my bike and I'm pissed off.
But I did mow the lawns today - I figured it made the place look a bit better, and up front on the cracked footpath some of the cut grass filled up the holes :shifty:

Like we honour those who have made a positive contribution to rebuilding Christchurch, putting their pictures in the paper, interviewing them on TV, we should also 'honour' those who have taken the opportunity to steal from those that have suffered. I suggest they are marched through town when the city is totally reopened. Have an official day of reopening, celebrate the new beginning we've got a chance at, and march these fuckers right past everyone. And for those in the back who can't see, don't worry we'll have 105" plasma screens around so you too can identify those who took from you.

Here is his link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/32444582@N07/sets/72157624796702211/
(Named Diarmuid Toman)
As I'd like to send him an email (gift if possible) to show my gratitude and on behalf, I can not find his E-mail address anywhere. So I was wondering if anyone from here knew.
He has a contact of Damien_Toman (Flickr ID) whom seems to race bucket bikes. Can anyone here give me any information? Please PM me for I do not want to miss the good Samaritan.
Thanks in advance,
EJ

looks like duvauchelle hotel has had it :( Well, this is what anoys me, yeah that last photo dosnt look hopefull... but im getting the vib after seeing the famous grouse in lincoln being demoed that a lot of unnesary destruction is being done. How come the demo is so fast, fence off and move on, no for some reason the evidance is being destroyed along with great buildings.
Have'in seen 1st hand the damage to twin skined red brick buildings I Know they are a acco waiting to happen... but there are ways around it like quake strethening, yip the average owner cant aford to do that so I feel the councils are choosing to remove any further issues and cover thier arses should they say alls ok and shit goes down.
Pretty impressive considering the big concrete prefab shed in front of it looks as if nothings happened, not sure if it's the same place that I heard mention of that had the fault line run directly through it....apparently there's a 4m open air hallway between the rooms
I'd say it is the one, the fault heads that way and that sort of damage when the other half of the house is in tact tells me it fell down a hole.

I'm hearing this a fair bit. I was talking to one of the crews a day or two ago - the inspectors have 100% authority in town to decide what stays.
I suspect, and it is purely a theory, that there is so much damage about that if they were attempting to try and retain or rebuild/restore the buildings it would be a decade before the city was back to 'normal' - there is simply not the capacity to attempt a restoration job this size.
The lincoln pub was reduced to a pile of rubble today, and I see the Tai Tapu pub is taped off.

The whole assessment thing is getting a bit strange away from the city. Hororata pub was assessed & condemned within 10hrs of the quake...but the local shop/garage has had literally hundreds of people through since and has major forecourt damage, foundation damage and a workshop that the owner is frankly hoping wll be written off...hasn't yet been looked at !!!
Mayor Coe showed his face here on Thursday - going round the district so he could look virtuous at Tursday night's meeting at Darfield.. so The garage owner & I got stuck into him about asessors....he's media shy waste of space and will go at the next elections...
Federated Farmers have a ranking list of councils - Selwyn is bottom nationally. Explains why most of the relief effort and PR out here is coming from Fed Farmers....
Tried to speak to Historic Places about possible help/guidance if needed for our place but they are absolutely snowed under - the councils are not meeting resistance to condemming historic buildings because they can't be everywhere. The Selwyn council has always had a policy of covering it's own arse first so it's condemn to be on the safe side...

You'll have to thank your Kaiapoi cousins for taking one up the rear.
It is a funny old thing this quake - zero damage in some areas, total in others. The boffins will be studying it for years to come.
It is weird having a shake in the car - it just wobbles on it's suspenders, I'm thinking of ordering a few hundred Ohlins units and setting the house up on them.

There is zero damage in Rangiora but 8-10km down the road in Kaiapoi it's suffered substantial damage, I think you'll find it is all to do with the type of ground the different places are built on

He's also registered with the council as an assessor so had a look around the house and said "don't be surprised if they decide to build you a new one" Bloody surprised me alright. Spent yesterday tidying up at work, putting shit back blah blah.
We had a couple of filing cabinets tip up, and some big heavy bookshelves didnt tip but either they (or the building) swayed at least 50mm: there is a cable conduit skirting thing 50mm wide at floor level and the cabinet is against that, and there are marks in the gib where the corner has smacked the wall.. (which accounts for the contents being on the floor....)
interesting times in property lor presently, either for vendor or purchaser.

And I have since over rulled... your joints fine, will need repair and piles checked, a weak ground structure runs under your house, road damage is high near you but the ground suprisingly dry.
I think you'll find it is all to do with the type of ground the different places are built on yip that and old twin brick construction areas, as for ya ground type, what the hell did they expect building on filled swamp lands.

If he did I don't think he'll be the only one, sadly ... but you can't blame anyone for making that choice, it's their right and a lot of small sole proprietor outfits will be sorely tempted to cash-up after any payout, I'd be guessing... I'm just hoping that it doesn't get to any stage of businesses being virtually forced into that "just not worth it" decision scenario by escalated insurance premiums (either direct or via rents).

Yes, thanks for the offer but we'd already had a builder and his architect look at it. At that point it was looking straightforward but the aftershocks have continued to inflict damage to the point that I anticipate a yellow with an inspection from a structural engineer to follow.
We may fall into the awkward category where EQC assess and make an offer to cover the estimated repair costs and we have to make a guess as to whether this will cover the inevitable unforseen hidden structural damage also...
Short of pulling the weatherboards off it's impossible to know what damage we'll find.
They may of course decide repair is not cost effective.

I'm not so worried about the shaking, the large lump of soggy sand that our house is on seems to damp the aftershocks quite nicely, we just get a gentle rolling with associated creaking of the house.
I am getting pissed off with the rain though, if you could do something about that it would be appreciated. i was round at my uncles shovelling the silt into wheel barrows then putting them on the side of the road, the council went around picking it up on one of the days i was there, now the rest of it is just sitting there. hopefully someone will go collect it soon. i spent hours moving that crap, not fun at all. i suggest hot wiring a bobcat

... Still no sign of any assessors.....I rang EQC today to get an idea of when I might see someone and was told that as I'm weather tight and not about to fall down it'll be several weeks before I see anyone. That's fine, was just after an indication. You may be in a similar position?
Also had my temporary water main repairs made permanent yesterday by the plumber I arranged. Have still heard nothing from the council RE the break I reported to them - as far as they know I still have no water!

Short of pulling the weatherboards off it's impossible to know what damage we'll find.
They may of course decide repair is not cost effective.
Dunno if it'd work, but would be worth checking if anyone does it... what about laparascopic (keyhole fibre optic) inspection - like they do with the drains, but the shorter ones they use by hand to inspect cylinders with the head still on (thru the plug hole)...? Guessing that could be done thru a pluggable hole in the cladding and would show up gaps/shearing/splintering as well as if the boards were off.
Anyway, an idea, maybe. Hope you get something definite fast, too.

An interesting idea - I'd imagine this would work in a lot of buildings and will probably be used on hollow stone constructions. The original side of the house where most visible damage is - and we suspect hidden structural damage - is weatherboard with internal lath & plaster. The kicker is that the spaces appear to be packed with local clay....presumably a crude form of insulation.
I'm assuming now that if assessors say - fixable - then the weatherboards will have to come off the bulged front wall as a minimum.
EQC say their priorities for assessors are firstly non weathertight buildings - around 2000 they say - then the structurally suspect. Around the same number of them too.
All we can do is wait philosophicaly - but try & tell my wife that.....
If aftershocks keep extending the cracks as they are doing it's going to be a moot point anyway.

A weather board house is the best construction IMHO, if a lintel has moved so will aa weather board, and this is highly unlikely.

Didn't know about the clay, had thought about batts afterwards, but hell, just trying to give some hope/options...
And re telling your wife and the waiting, all I can think of is take really good care of each other - you know each other best! - and when you're really in it just say "F**k it!" and try to get away. Things aren't going to go as fast as anyone hopes - blame aftershocks, bureaucracy, materials/labour shortages, whatever - so everyone is going to need their blow-off strategies for the next few months for the hard slog until things get more settled and positive.
Sorry, here endeth the lesson. Take care, good luck...

The Bullet Bunker is somewhat isolated up here just north of the Mak river, which has been great for keeping the kids calm and getting back to normal routines.
I missed the quake experience being at the Cold Kiwi... so alas last nights shock the rolled through home at 00.30 this morning was exciting for me, the sound of it hauling towards us, and go through the house was kinda spectacular... though in saying that, Mrs Bullet (whom was home alone with the shrapnel for the big one), lay in bed terrified with thoughts going back a couple of weeks.
It appears that all is going to take some time to get back to a kinda of "normal" and no doubt many will be looking at options of moving away from the area.
Kinda grounding it is, though no one died in the quake, the aftermath will kill the dreams and lifestyle's of many for some time.

NZ is constantly on the move, the only variation is by how much!
There is nowhere to run to and hide from earthquakes in NZ, it's the reason the country is here!
The Pacific plate folds "under" the North Island (Australian plate) tending to lift it up and most of the South Island (Pacific plate) lifts up as it folds "over" the Australian plate!
To suggest that NZ is a somewhat "twisted nation" is probably not too far from the truth!
Satellite measurements indicate the Pacific plate advances in a South Westerly direction by about 40mm per year!
Try to enjoy the trip! :niceone:

The sewers in that area are big mothas. I was living on Avonside Drive as a kid when most of the current scheme was put in. There's a huge pipeline comes across the river at Morris St which comes from up St Albans way somewhere and continues down through Dallington etc. It took something like 3 years to put in and it's a ferking long way down too...so if the system is working again inside a year it's damm good going.
Amazingly we've had the EQC assessors here - and as we predicted they are now to send a structural engineer out.
Their predicted timetable was - engineer in about 2 months, report, then they reckon we can start work in about 6 months....
Reached the right person at EQC and that may change... The last stage in the triage of damage is the over/under 115,000 figure. If over they can throw the claim to the insurance company to manage. If the engineer says our chimney has to go there's so much internal bracing/rebuilding to do it should be over the threshold and they'll happily hand us over to AMI...
Remember - it's the squeaky wheel...Gerry Brownlie's office seems to carry some clout with EQC.

I had a visit from EQC this afternoon. They had a good look around and said that someone from geotech will have to come for a second look due to the ground damage I’ve got. So no final decision for a while yet, but they said it’s looking like the house will be fixed and the garage/workshop replaced.
They also said a neighbours house "is munted" and will be demolished, and I know of another one round the corner that's coming down.
One of the EQC guys is down from Tauranga and the other one is over from Oz. The aussies are coming over in 3 week rotations and he said there's another 150 of them waiting to come over if they're needed. There's a few of the EQC guys doing the area - they didn't call in because I'd made a claim but just because they're checking out the area. They didn't know about my claim, I had to tell them. It's just lucky I was home I guess.
Good luck Helen. Just a thought - you may want to ask your neighbours to give you a ring on your mobile if they spot the EQC guys in the area while you're at work so you can shoot home for them.

The EQC team approach is working very well. They are certainly thorough.
friends at Aylesbury had had their insurance companies assessor out who judged their house repairable.
The EQC assessors looked deeper - found the damage the original assessor had missed and the house is now a writeoff...
I think that this may possibly be reasonably common as the first people in after the quake were usually civil defence volounteers - not experts.

Well I finally got motivated enough to undo the shelving I put in a few years ago to expose then manhole so I could go under the house and inspect my piles. Sorry, the piles under my house. Not a lot of fun with a crawlspace of about 80 or 90 cm and in close to complete darkness. Bloody hard to manouevre and use the torch to see what I wanted to see. Then I had the bright idea of grabbing my rather good camera and sitting in one spot taking photos eventually covering 360 degrees. Turns out the range of the flash covered the whole underfloor and the autofocus worked a treat giving me a way better look than I could have got without spending a very uncomfortable half hour or so under there. Just a matter of hoping out then and downloading the photos on the PC where a quick review showed that all piles are still doing their job with no sign of damage. Bloody relief that!
I think that that just leaves me with superficial damage to attend to. (Cracks where ceiling and wall panels have separated slightly.) I have a few cracks in the mortar between the concrete block cladding of the house but I guess there's not much to be done about that but seal them up.

standing under a 3 story scafold wraped around a block of leaking homes, kinda helped with getting the last piece of roton cladding off, very sureal watching all the parked cars dancing full on, just like the movies.
Only a 5 but more shit on the deck at home than there was with the 7.1 I asume its all about the direction and style, depth of the quake as in we have all noticed how some go forward/back, left/right or round n round, ie this time the TV went backwards.

Was at 2nd floor of CPIT building at that time. I wonder how people felt it at 6th floor!
Yeepee kai yay!I was sitting on the bog 5 floors up at the time. I know why they screw those hand rails to the wall now - to stop you falling off and leaving a skidmark across the seat!

Snap! I had just lowered my pants and took my seat to commence my performance on our 1st floor dunny when it hit. Thought initially it was just someone banging on the door being funny but then noticed the floor and walls moving so quickly cancelled my performance, raised my tweeds and got out. I remember thinking there was no way I was going to die with my pants around my ankles.

Well if there's no way you're going to die with your pants round your ankles, why pull them up ever again ??
Was on the pit wall at Ruapuna - just hung on & rode it out - I swear the wall was doing the conga !!! Rattled the windows in the tower and Crawford's workshop.
No one on track noticed it....
