What a great day. Good company, good attitudes and good weather as well. Always wonderful to meet new people, and to catch up with some old friends. Toaster, lets not leave it that long again eh?

It did get a bit blustery on the Mangawhai road for sure. Always good to ride it when it is like that, for that was really gentle by comparison to what it can get like in places. The wind shear is an interesting thing to experience. Look to the vegetation on the side of the road for clues, trees that grow in one direction only are a good clue
You guys on your scorpios will get blown around a bit more than I will on my bike, coping with that is a good skill to have. Just relax, keep drive momentum happening, ride into the wind, dont cruise. Relax your arms, grip the tank with your knees and grin like a mad thing :D
I have seen a rather large bloke on a little 150 FXR, getting hammered on a ride. From behind it looked like he was turning a hard right hander, when in fact he was simply going straight, leaning against the wind to go straight
Thanks for coming along today, we had a blast!

Yea it was good fun for sure! I was surprised at how the scorpio actually managed to keep up! :woohoo:
Great day out, just a little sore from the seat. Not a bad price to pay for some great riding though!

The Scopio is a cool little bike, light on its feet and very forgiving if you make a mistake. Does highway speed and then some. Your botty will get used to riding distances  The more you ride the less it hurts... after a while
You guys did really well today...

I am on annual leave until 10 June so will keep an eye out for any rides and any future weekends free when they eventuate during my shift roster.
It was great to finally catch up since our coffee and chat at Nasty's place last year in Wellington. I had a great ride back over Woodcocks and gave the ST a chance to stretch its legs a bit.
Excellent to see so many new bikers getting out there and giving group riding a go.
Will keep up posting shiftworker rides for those free and able to ride during the week too.

The Tavern is a great place on day like today, heaps of sun/great food.
During the cooler months they have the fire going inside and if its wet? just hang your gear around it, have a beer or coffee, something to eat etc. Its only 40 minutes from home so a nice easy obtainable venue at short notice.
The lookout? yes that be it, a must stop anytime on such a stunning day.

I am not doing so much of it anymore, I do like the fact there a big grip so easier to hold on to.

I looooooove heated grips - I find winter weight gloves or thermal liners too bulky, and my hands go numb in the cold.
The bigger grip makes my hand closer to the clutch as well which comes in handy, as there is only so far that the lever can be adjusted - I have my thumb joint fused/pinned and don't have much of a reach anymore.
I have to confess that I use the heated grips for autumn, winter and spring, but I am just a delicate little flower....
Anyways as my new bike won't be ready until Tuesday, I may come along on the 750 tomorrow.

Well made it home finally :-)
Was pretty happy with todays ride, did 237.5k's before my gas light came on which for my bike is pretty good (13 litres of gas) Filled up at 260ks and managed to squeeze 13.82litres in. Those PR3's are magic, a lot more confidence in the wet going around the corners definitely feel I can lean the bike over with out worrying about something giving way which in turn made me a lot smoother today hence better gas mileage.
Hopefully this should improve again once i put my Power Commander in.
But aside from all that was a great ride, also survived the coffee and the cat trying to stake its ownership of me!
Look forward to the next one and anyone up this way is more than welcome to stop in for a coffee or a place to crash any time!

Hint hint heheh.
That is a good ride...I used to do it as a sort of regular ride called the Brynderwyn Bypass. Haven't done it for a while now.
Duckster has a point so I would open it up to who ever wants to do it.
Would do SH1 to Paps though (quickest route for leaners)
Paparoa/Oakleigh is 40 kms of yum yum if the weather has been legal.
But yeah, I could some calculations ...K's/Time.

Good ride today chaps and chapesses. Moms tip about the Pledge on my visor was a good one. The water streamed off during the heavier down pours.
Now I wonder how it would work on Cordura? :tugger: My jacket is drying in front of the fire, I need it dry for tomorrows commute.
Woodcocks is quite a technical ride on a good day without the added difficulty of a wet road. Foghorn did really well to get through that. I'm impressed.:yeah:

I laughed when Maha complimented you on the weather tightness of your jacket at Puhoi :pinch:
I think throwing it down is a better description of that rain  My brand new pants let the dampness in :( Very disappointing :nya:

Just to ruin that buzz I heard today that I Pizza Barn is currently closed (not sure why or for how long either). However there is another cafe in Waipu that is meant to be quite good on same side of the road about 20 metres further along right on the corner of the intersection...
Its fairly new there, but supposed to be quite good.

Started out in fine weather, had fine weather through to lunch then more fine weather for the ride back to base.:sunny:
Seems we cleared SH16 shortly before they closed it.:Police:
Handled the few gusts to Wellsford where there were about 19 drops of rain.
We were stopped anyway so it didn't matter.
Had a good run through to Waipu, opted for the Brynderwyns (timing issue)
Sorry about that Grant (who was waiting for us in M/Whai...

Carmel turned up from Whangarei followed soon after by Grant..

To be honest with you, that corner went largely un-noticed yesterday.
Personally I feel it an easier corner heading south in a 'less to think about' way, and thats the way we did it.
I thought Brendon may have a bit of trouble with it so I let the five other riders go ahead so he could follow me only.

Everybody so far has been is ok with the speed minimum...70kph is not a safe cruising speed. Where able (straight bits) riders are ''encouraged'' to keep up with the lead rider (and that is not difficult) Speed minimum is set at 80kph. We provide a safe environment for new riders to ride as a group.

Hi Maha,
been following the messages after your rides, they really sound like good fun and well organized. I do ride daily, but always on my own, so have never been in a group ride. Usually I just commute and do little weekend rides, the What If road, or left left right
So this will be a first and I am looking forward to it and meeting other riders esp. you and Mom....!
And with this lovely weather today, I shall go for a coffee now, somewhere nice :sunny:

He means 80 kph MAXIMUM, not minimum. Yeah, our rides are failrly laid back, be good to see you come along. There are a few that have come over the bridge for the first ime to get to our rides, usually there is someone that will come and meet up with you for company. Just keep watching this thread. If there are no takers I can always come across and get you

What I mean by that 80kph thing is, that is lowest speed to be maintained when possible (ie: straight bits)...for the real new riders that turn up, that can be fast enough and we have to take that into consideration. That is the whole point of these rides.
We have no problem with giving up every 3rd saturday or so to lead a ride at this pace.
I have said before that ...as a group ride, we ride as a group.
The slowest in that group basically sets the pace.
I couldn't do it every weekend, it would drive (sorry, ride) me nuts...
I admit that on the last ride I couldn't help myself at one point but I pulled it back soon after...:innocent:
Ride 6 is only about 145kms, but for those coming from outside the area, that could be big enough with a lunch stop.

I think it is a great thing you guys are doing Maha, I know you have all given me the confidence required to ride better, and the 80Km thing is very much just a mind block, and I can't see there being many officers that would pull you over doing between 80 and 100km with an L plate on unless you were being stupid.
