Teeny tiny fire extinguishers- where are some good sources?
Nordie you got a few in the emporium?

Don't get one from the safety shop down the port.

I'd prefer one of those Tundra's myself...

For the carb breather, I stuck the top branch of the T up inside the frame tube to the steering head.

Omarama locals and farmers from the Lake Benmore area claim they continued to receive rain where many other areas down south have missed it so at this stage the river levels are sitting a tad below where they were at the time of the DB1k 2011, nothing to cause any issue for the non-challenge sections. The only major I can think of is the single Manuherikia West Branch crossing to get up the Manuherikia East Branch. Pick the right line though and it will be all of only axle to 3/4 wheel deep
When did you cross it? We have had about 80mm of rain in Alex over last 2 days (thats about 20% of annual rainfall) and the Manuherikia has gone from ~2 cumecs to over 60 since yesterday morning. It should subside over the next 7 days but it will still be a lot higher than 2 days ago (and probably last year). I will check what the level it was last year at work on Monday.

3 days ago. I was fishing some backwater off Lake Benmore when a kick arse thunderstorm rolled in, watching well over 100 lightning flashes and thunder so strong it pounded your chest was an impressive way to end the day. A local said it didn't eventuate to much and that only 15mm fell in the area?? 80mmm eh, that's a decent dump, if that's the case the crossings may well be a little interesting

Who do you work for to have access to flow rates? It would be a great help to see them the day before the DB1K so we know what to expect... possible?

I'd be watching these two sites myself.

Rainfall http://water.orc.govt.nz/WaterInfo/Site.aspx?s=TunnelHill
River flow http://water.orc.govt.nz/WaterInfo/Site.aspx?s=Beattie

Map of sites here

While Dunstan Creek is not the Manuherikia the catchments are pretty close. The flow meter on the Manuherikia at Ophir is likely to be affected by far more than our area of interest being further north west.

Other site to watch is this one http://ecan.govt.nz/services/online-services/monitoring/river-flows/pages/river-flow-chart.aspx?SiteNo=70902
Same river as the twin river crossings behind Waimate but one hell of a long way down stream with a huge catchment upstream of the flow recorder. The Haka river is probably more useful though obviously not the same river http://ecan.govt.nz/services/online-services/monitoring/river-flows/pages/river-flow-chart.aspx?SiteNo=71155

Re forecast charts I use these two pages.
First one is better of this far out as can see what is generally headding our way from south of Ausi.
http://www.metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain&region=swp&noofdays=7

Second page is better for getting the detail when getting closer to the date i.e. 5 or do days out

Looking at last years records for Sunday 23rd January 2011 the Manuherikia was doing 4 cumecs. Right this moment it is doing just under 20. Estimate for Sunday is 6-8 cumecs so it should be ok. No significant rain forecast to fall in that catchment for the next 7 days although it is predicting 1-3mm on Saturday, but still a few days out yet.

So do we actually have to ford this river somewhere or are you just using it as an indicator for something else in the general area?
I can't place it on the route... guessing Omarama Saddle(s) and the broken bridge on the approach on Hawkdun Runs Rd?

I think we have to cross the dunstan creek which is fairly close to the manuherikia and most likely a good gauge. However the rain last weekend was quite localised in a few places so there could be as much as a 20-30% difference from only 10-20km away. I think it is safe to say the river will be comparable to last year and most likely a touch higher. But even if the flow was double of last year it would only be 20-25% deeper. If we were doing it last weekend however it may have been a show stopper!

cooneyr
16th January 2012, 12:44
Guys regarding river flows the route crosses the Manuherikia north of St Bathurns. This is a long way from the flow recorder site that K14 is talking about and is the very upper part of a large catchment. The rainfall in that part of the catchment has not been the same as the rainfall in the lower part of the catchment so the flow gauge readings on the Manuherikia just north of Alex need to be treated with a grain of salt.

By way of comparison I took my bike and a Toyota Prado across the Manuherikia without any difficulty (had to walk it first though to check the route) when checking out the route in early Nov. K14 has confirmed that the flows just north of Alex were 28-30 which is significantly more than the 6-8 predicted for this coming weekend.

Short of a major down pour before or over the weekend we should be fine.

Cheers R

Last time (few years now) I went up there the main challenge was deep rain ruts that made the road a bit narrow or needed to be crossed at times. Other issues were a couple of tight turns and wind if it's blowing up top.
It's a bit rough but not particularly difficult.

Hi S,
If you're not doing the Awakino i'm not either. With a new untested mount, unknown fuel range AND trying to stay in one piece for our snowboarding trip to Canada a couple of weeks later, the gentleman's option i will be happy to take.

Hi there Markl - it'll be a pleasure to hook up with you again - I'm relying solely on my new little Garmin eTrex 20 - roll sheet holder buggered up - so I'm just keen to enjoy the ride - see you at Fairlie inshallah :)

Looks like everyone should have received this by email but I thought I'd put up this little bit of it here reminding everyone they do have to attend the briefing and sign stuff among other things.

Riders Briefing

A riders briefing will be held at the Gladstone at 7pm. This is to provide the combination for the lock for the gate at Benmore Dam and other useful information. All riders need to attend this briefing.

As mentioned on the registration webpage all riders need to sign the ride disclaimer. Most of you have registration packs to collect, however even those who have not purchased a T-shirt, sticker or BBQ need to come to the sign in desk and sign the disclaimer.

Update - Joshs 250 with Dad - also dropped Dad (Jeff) just before Kurow, Bikes Ok, but his shoulder and knee took a knock so they limped back to Fairlie, by chance I swung past the Gladstone on the way home (just in case!) and caught them there :niceone: So a lift with me back to Rollleston via a friendly Physio for a quick saturday night assessment and he's all good - nothing broken just badly whacked.

The DB1K is a great event to catch up with riders you seldom see, and meet a new bunch of likeminded people, it is one of the fun aspects of the event. This year was no different, it was great to meet new riders and put faces to KB names, I really enjoyed meeting a lot of riders from the North Island for the first time. Grant was one of those I hadn’t yet met and he completely blew me away with his generosity and dedicated willingness to help when dad took a spill and we were in a prick of a position getting bikes/gear/us back home and get his shoulder and knee looked at. You are truly a great bloke Grant, it was fantastic to meet you and I’m looking forward to catching up with you for a ride soon (the beers will be on me!!)

Down but not out… The spill was a real shame, it was the kickoff to a 3 & 1/2 week father/son South Island ADV tour we had planned for quite some time, but, with some recovery time to address we will simply restart the ride when the healing is done and he is fighting fit and dangerous!

Well as a first time DB'er Ive gotta say what a bloody good weekend. Thanks Ryan!! and Matt for the Friday ride down. It was great to meet and put faces to names.
1700km in 3 days...might look at getting one of those comfy seats for the DR. Today was fantastic with snow/sleet/shit mud on the first pass out of Lawrence, to sunny over the Omarama, to pissing down over the Omarama, to just a great ride through the black forest, then torential rain from Ashburton to Rangiora.
The DR proved to be very capable (more so than the rider!) Nice bruise the size of a rugby ball on my hip from a wee spill on Friday.
Will definately be back next year.

Good times, and nice to put a face to a few names. I got through the snow but bailed at the old Dunstan Road and went back via Danseys, Black Forest and Mackenzie Pass/Limestone Valley. Once again a great ride. Thanks to the CooneyR family, ADVGD, TA and everyone else who helped make it an awesome ride. And boo to Mr Givi and his shitty crash bars. As with last year, a low speed drop onto soft clay (caused by snow-blindness - a new one for me)was enough to bend them into contact with the fairing, only this time the fairing has a dirty great crack in it as a result.

Agreed!

Another huge weekend. Many thanks Ryan for the massive effort organising and monitoring the trip. Sadly not enough time this year to complete much of the course or spend debriefing with the many attending. An earlier start next time for sure! So many stories of camaraderie and assistance enroute. (Without Struan Carl and Tim I wouldn’t have got as far as I did.) Great to see Aslan made it through after an off. For many the memory of the pain will be short lived and all be up for another round next year.

Also, more detail required on one-day riders!

Excellent adventure.
Had a great time, nice to catch up with and meet the people I met.
678.4 miles = 1091.78km = Fairlie to Fairlie, done the entire main route (no challenge sections) plus one small extra deviation care of XF650 down to the Kurow Creek for a look and crossing.
No spills :wings: and only needed a couple of pushes to keep the Transalp moving in the Omarama Saddle.
Will bring the DR again next time.

Pulled my track log apart and it reads a bit like this....

Saturday Total 13hours 23minutes....
7:38am Fairlie - departed the Gladstone (next year leave earlier and have breakfast elsewhere instead of waiting for them to serve at 7am)
9:48am Waimate
rivers are low this year but there's still some wet bikes at the slippery bouldery one.
12:46pm arrived at Kurow.... food, fuel, gossip.
...ohhh, mucked about for 1hour, 20 minutes... a bit long really.
2:06pm left Kurow.
through the Danseys Pass
4:12pm Nasby
some really nice fast flat smooth bits here and then the 'not suitable for vehicles' sign makes me laugh as we ride past in here too.
5:10pm Omakau
in to the land of many gates.
6:27pm Cromwell.... food, fuel.
7pm left Cromwell.
up the Carracktown track
7:50pm Duffers Saddle/Nevis Rd.
9pm Alexandra.

zzzzzzzzzzz

Sunday total 15hours 10minutes.....
7:12am depart Alexandra
Millennium track etc
8:51am Lawrence.... food, gossip, fuel
9:41am left Lawrence
long ruts are slippery this year, some snow, slow going but all good with the mild manner of the Transalp and this is why I put the knobblies on isn't it.
there's Jezza kneed it-ing his holed radiator in the worst weather to be doing that in... and a KLR resting on it's side... and again.
1:07pm Old Dunstan turn.
it was nice but now there's more snow and I'm getting wet this time :sweatdrop
3:30pm Moa Creek
up past the falls dam and over the Omarama saddle. Hey Alane aren't chains supposed to be a loop like without ends?
6:02pm Omarama.... fuel, gossip, food.
7:22pm left Omarama.
through the Black Forrest, it's been graded an in as good a condition as I've ever seen it.
9:16pm passing the Haldon School
it's nice n easy but feels a bit too straight and long now.
9:37pm Makenzie turn.
getting dark and I'm getting slower.... are we there yet???
10:22pm arrived back at the Gladstone and :done:

the weekend started out well, left home friday with Off-spring & crused up to Fairlie top 10 to find that because of a cock up in their bookings we got up graded to a motel unit :woohoo:

left about 7am got to the 1st xing to see some one had already drowned their bike (not a good start for them! hope he got going again) had a great run through to Kurow apart from the Rena (new name for the stead) having a wee rest  & I understand TA has the evidence
lunch over & onto the zig-zag, but 1st had to go & get the old fella :ride: with us  old people
making good time up the zig-zag with a few retries & starts & a very smelly clutch & alot of :sweatdrop then about 400m from the top put the leg out for a bit of help & some more power, felt & heard the tear in the back of my leg then hit the ground big time with the Rena on top... crawled out & found I could not put any weight on it... o shit!!! was 1st thought 2nd was how do I get out now, got the bike up & Nordie boy took it up to the next corner while I tried to walk it off.... got the leg back over & set off made another 2 sections came to a halt... this is not going to work very well... after a bit of a chat I was given a hand fill of pills & rest  then TR (Trials Rider) took the Rena & put me on the Dr  we made it to the top then down the other side with a lot of stops & .....
another stop @ pig shit in another drink & do ya want any more pills :shit: no I'm having enough trouble now with tring to stay on board...
we took the left hand track out as it was a bit shorter... but the river xings :thud: & then I drop the Dr right in font of it's owner  & could do nothing except try & turn it off & lay there until the pills took effect again... then Off-spring decides to see how deep the hole in front is  good onya kid we say!!! as it turned out he had hit the kill switch when he saw how deep it was getting 1.2m, a bit of water in the carb none in the air box :Punk:
back on track & a fair bit more of the rough stuff then we made it to the road, I'm back on the Rena felling realy  & TR back on the Dr all is good with the world
made it home to Rox & find the BBq going cold beers in the fridge a bit of TLC from mrs Shrek  feed & watered :zzzz:

sunday me & the beached whale :dodge: take the nana's track to Danseys then Kurow etc made it back to Fairlie about 1900 with a lot of stops on the way brusing coming out lots of codine to  to keep the pain away :innocent: the others can tell their story

but a big thanks to TR for bringing my bike out all 75kg's of him on a 250kg (Rena) Nordie, Terry & Off-spring for great traveling mates, as donkey would say lets do that again!!!

Got home at 4.30ish.

Great times great times, good to meet new people and catch up with some others.

Done the dusty this year with a couple of flash harrys on orange things. One of them got a flat tyre 5 mins into the ride which made him swear a lot. The other one had the runs and was scared to fart, and had to have a couple of excursions into the bush, and apparently it is impossible to do number twos with mx boots on using a proper toilet. All the customers at Kurow servo are all the better for knowing that.

Thanks for the company guys.

Some random memories:

Awakino challenge was like a trip to the gym (need a lighter bike)

The snow section was great fun.
Omarama challenge section was fantastic.
Having a few bunches of riders loading up on redbulls before riding over Black Forest got a bit insane:woohoo:

A BIG THANKS to Cooneyr for another excellent Dusty Butt (or Muddy Bummer as it was in that snot on Sunday morning). Even with his involvement in quake recovery, Ryan still made time to ensure the rest of us had a bloody good weekend of adv riding.
This year I rode with a very dodgy knee and it was hard to work the pegs at times, especially in the mud (well that's my excuse anyway). I can thank Thor Force knee braces for getting me home, as evident by my leg being like jelly today without them . The wee DT went well considering I carry too much crap and the Aux tank bracket passed the "ground impact test" a couple of times. Front tyre probably wasn't appropiate for mud but then that adds to the adventure.

We ran short on time for a couple of sections but the "substitute" squirt home through Dansey & Haka Passes was still worth it.
The highlight for me was the Dunstan Trail, the part from after the mud & ruts of the Lammermoor Range through to Moa Creek. Like last time it was dry, fast & twisty and I'm sorry to hear many riders missed it - it's worth going back there just for that bit.
Funniest sight was Padmei being called Helen & leveling the Lammermoor ruts with his tractor.
Most commendable goes to Aslan for persevering (in pain) after his Friday crash and then being stuck under his bike for some time in the Lammermoor ruts.
And my bad luck award goes to BigRedDog for crashing and having to withdraw before he even got to Waimate.

Spent most of today working on Rogson's bikes, firstly trying to fix his WR450. Thought we had it sussed but it still puffed steam. So then it was a rush to prep his Freewind from the back of my garage, so that he can join a group of Dusty Butters who have headed south to ride the Nevis, Borland, Walter Peak, Skippers etc. I also added a tyre to Roger's load to drop off to MXnut Mark, who was stranded in Fairlie.

Congratulations to all those riders who completed this years DB.

It's Saturday, I was there from about 10:53am through to 11:27am, we've came from Waimate and on our way to Kurow, the same river that caused problems last year.
Same boulders but only half the water, still a bit tricky for some though.

Awakino Gorge is the only one I actually know the name of and where it was. Oh and the Dunstan Trail, but only cause that's what the sign said at the other end. I had no idea what it was when riding it.

Well I have been through my GPS logs and have a better recollection now of how it went.

Day 1

Left at 0627. Got my left boot wet at the first crossing (quite a good one to start the day considering it was my first crossing of anything deeper than about 6 inches). We made good time to Waimate, passing a few bikes and taking it easy through the greasy paddocks. Arrived at 0828 and put 6.3L in after 104km. On our way again 13 mins later into the doom and gloom of the Waimate gorge. The rain stopped the moment we hit the gravel (and dust) and we continued on through the rolling hill country. We hit Kurow right on 1100 for the second fuel stop and some food before the first challenge section. Leaving Kurow bang on 1130 we headed up and up and up. That was some seriously cool and challenging terrain. I had my first drop when my front wheel unexpectedly hit a big rock and pushed me off to one side. Only a small bruise on my knee though and we kept plodding along. The river crossings through here were a bit difficult too, stalling my bike in one and having to push it most of the way in 2-3 feet deep water.

After about 3 hours 45 mins we made it to the other side, pretty relieved that the rough blocks of shist were behind us. Through the relatively flat and straight roads of the Ida Valley and to Omakau at 15:32 for another 13 min fuel and food stop. That was the last stop of the day. We blatted over Thompsons Track (with it's 19 gates) in pretty good time, through Cromwell and up the Carricktown Track to Duffers Saddle at 17:42. Then back down to the bottom of Nevis Road and through Hawkesburn Station down into Clyde and back to Alex for the night (and to sleep in my own bed :woohoo:).

Day 2

Awoken at 0300 by the rain didn't really help my motivation for getting up at 0600 but we were on our way by 0638 and made quick time down the Millenium track and into Lawrence for at 10 minute fuel stop at 08:18. Then it was down to business. We gradually made our way up to Lake Mahinerangi and onto the Lammermore Ranges. The snow started out light at first and then we see a bike approaching. It was Cooney coming to say that it was getting worse and turn around if we wanted to. What kind of adventure riders would we be if we turned around . We carried on as the snow got slightly heavier and started accumulating on our bikes. By 10:37 we had finished the Lammermore loop and come out on the Dunstan Trail. The snow had stopped but the wind blowing fairly strong, straight from the South too. We sheltered by the trees for 7 minutes and had a few things to eat before we were on our ways again. We dropped down into the Serpentine valley and through the farmland before we were back up to the final climb of the Dunstan Trail. We decided against the challenge sections for today so skipped the Serpentine Church loop. We passed Poolburn Dam and on the way down I saw another rider on a V-Strom, Jantar had gone for a ride to watch the first riders coming through. A quick chat and we were off again to our secret fuel dump location to get the valuable 7 litres required to ensure we made it to Omarama.

Back into the Ida Valley and we made quick time out through Oturehua towards the Omarama saddle. Again skipping the challenge section and opting for the traditional saddle route it was a pretty cool climb with a few river crossings thrown in and a relatively steep final few km before the summit of 1480m was reached at 14:29. A rocky decent till the gravel roads of the Mackenzie Basin leading into Omarama meant we were filling up our tanks just on 15:00 and filling our stomachs too. Now the end was in sight and after a brisk 20km down to Otemata we were onto the Black Forest track around the shores of Lake Benmore and over to Haldon Arm. It was probably my favourite track of the ride, tight and twisty with good traction and not too many loose rocks. The final 50km over Mackenzie Pass and through Albury into Fairlie was over before we knew it and we arrived in Fairlie at 17:28 to finish the ride.

A pretty enjoyable weekend and big thanks to Cooney for all the preparation, it was really well organised and I can't wait for next year.

then Off-spring decides to see how deep the hole in front is  good onya kid we say!!! as it turned out he had hit the kill switch when he saw how deep it was getting 1.2m, a bit of water in the carb none in the air box:

i think i know that hole well..... was that the one with rocks across the road as a warning? casualty and i went that way as well

it got deeper and deeper as i went across and then i lost traction coming out of the hole. jumped off and got 1 leg stuck on the seat with the bike stuck 45 degrees facing up. was stuck that way with my leg cramping up until sam came and rescued me. no water got in the bike even tho it was up to the exhaust and one point bubbling away

there were rocks on the otherside warning people not to cross so sam put some on the road the way we came thru and then crosssed at the left where it was shallow. caught up with transalper at the end of the track where it joined up with the non challnege section and he said you were coming thru this way .......

Well that was definitely an adventure ride!!!
Not the most successful ride for me
Day 1....Collapsed rear wheel bearing just after Waimate (even thou I had checked it and had a brand new wof)...4hours lost then two separate flat tyres over the Awakino
Day 2..We decided to take a day out and do a loop down the Nevis, through Lumsden and Riversdale then back up to Alex via Piano flat. Not the best route choice, we rode over the Old man range in a white out, snow blizzard battling mud bogs and frozen rock step ups etc. I ending up putting a hole in my right engine cover care of rear brake lever and losing about 500mls of oil, good old need-it sorted hole out but lever snapped off while trying to straighten it. Had fun coming down steep icy road with only a front brake then Alfs rear bearing also collapsed but he managed to limp back to Alex.
Next day we spent the morning getting my brake lever welded up and Alf replaced his wheel bearings since it had got to midday we decided to skip the Dunstan trail and head straight back to Fairlie via Omarama saddle challenge section and Bllack forrest.
So all in all it certainly was an adventure, nice to see new and old faces and again big thanks to Ryan
See ya next year

.....Grant was one of those I hadn’t yet met and he completely blew me away with his generosity and dedicated willingness to help......

Agree completely. Grant was the fella helping me with the sign in and without him you'd probably still be waiting for your T-shirts. Big thanks to Grant.

Others who help are Transalper for checking navigation materials and ADVGD who built the website. Both made a big commitment to help make the ride go so smoothly so please thank them too.

Of course I must publicly acknowledge my wife for tolerating my time focusing on something other than renovating the house and looking after our youngin.

....Also, more detail required on one-day riders!...

You've probably got this by now but three started. One finished in 18hrs 55mins. Other two had electrical issues that consumed too much time so they opted to take a shorter route to Fairlie instead.

It seems my backtracking offering an alternative out of the poor weather was taken up by a few. I'm not sure how many did this but good to see that people stayed safe whatever their decision. I personally got back on track at cell 182 (Old Dunstan Trail) and completed the Serpentine challenge, but not the 'wet' Omarama Saddle. Having lost about 3 hours with the Lammerlaw snow and then another hour catching up with farmers either end of the Black Forest track I had to ride over Mackenzies Pass in the dark which was fun with the EXC's headlight dimming every time I touched the brakes (need to 'float the ground' as they call it). Also discovered that I've wired the headlight so low position on the switch was high beam - doh!

Woodman's comment about going to gym was apt. I've drive a computer for a living and with work changes I've not been able to cycling to work since the quakes. Its really caught up with me so I'm feeling pretty worn out at the moment. Must do more exercise!

....had no idea where I was 90% of the time; trust the GPS;...

Glad to hear this worked for you. If anybody has any feedback about the navigation feel free to PM or email me.

Someone is going to have to put the track up on a map and name all the bits

Good idea. At some point I'll create a KML file and see if I can modify the website map page.

Also, I'm thinking of putting a new page on the website with links to photos, videos etc. If you do post videos and photos somewhere please send me a PM or email so I can include the link. Its easier for others to jump to the links if you keep your photos grouped together and put up captions if you post them.

Cheers R

Ditto. The GPS track was 100% perfect. Did not have any issues at all (apart from batteries nearly going flat - FYI a Garmin 60CSX can run for over 6 hours after you get the batteries are flat warning message!) following the route and getting the turns etc correct. It is so easy it is nearly cheating. The roll chart is a more authentic experience but for simplicity the GPS can't be beaten.

YEP!!!---highly embarrassing---(for the second time)

That was the replacement chain from the first "chain incedent"

that time I let it get---- too slack---run off---& break/bend.
The first " incedent " happened @ lake tennison ,on the way down ,when the "farmers only" (I won,t elaberate ) joining link parted,& we found none of our spare links would fit. ----One thing I learnt,---different chain,s have different pin daiameters.
Anyway ---Devil----(now called "MacIvor) fixed it with number eight wire.
Made a "staple " shape---put that through chain--put sideplate on---bent ends of wire,after cutting them to length,--bend over,--& "Bobs your uncle"
Got all the way through to Hamner on it with the "velvet smoothness " of the Funduro.
Kiwi injun ewety @ it,s best.:Punk:

Was a hard five & a half days for us four 'Naki, ans.

Left New Plymouth Wed. arvo.
Took 2.30a.m sailing Thurs

Rode up Wiarau valley --did Rainbow --tennison---malling pass.

Did MacDonald downs/ Lees valley --stayed @ Springfield

Went on "pre ride" ride---Big chicken colected firewood ,(which he bought all the way home) after breaking his rack,& spreading "personals" all along the track.---- A big Thanks to those who got it back to him----

Sat---- had a good run really---
Funduro was a "Pig" to get over the Awakino--but made it with a big loss of sweat.-----Chris ,s rack broke on the DR 650.
We had intentions of doing Oldman range/piano flat, but run out of time.
Felt pretty buggered,anyway.

Sun. Oldman range, off,ve menue on acc. of snow dusting.(Just as well,as it turned out)
----don,t know if you were brave or foolish ,to do it Matt & Alf.---

Roads from Alex to Beaumont track were "wonderfull"--& NO DUST.:wari:
The snow on the Lammamoor was--an experience---shure turned into an adventure -----not easy to ride ,----when blinded by driveing snow.:shit:
In the middle of all that ,Bigchickens Katoom 950 was haveing missfireing/backfireing fits, wich he initially thought was carb, iceing.
Turned out it was a loose battery terminal.

The rest of the run through to the "chain incedent #2 was without drama.

I had to take it easy through the Blackforest as the damaged chain still had a pretty bad kink & was threatening to run off.

Mon. was a big day--run down to Ashburton for repairs/tyres
(Thanks Jeff Marshall Suzuki, for excellent service)
Rode around to Springs Junction/Maruia saddle (smooth)--St Aunaurd---Wairau valley & to 10.30pm sailing @ picton.
Pity we run out of time to do breaburn/Poricka ,as intended--but run out of time.

They said the sailing would be a bit "lumpy" --but none of us know, as we were asleep,---dunno why?----Then hightailed it home,in a cold southerly--TAILWIND-YEA!!. I got inside @ 6.15am--- Buggered--but happy to knock off my third Dusty.
Thanks to all those organisers----your "something else!!!"

Hello fellow dusty butters. I trust most of you are all back at home now & caught up with your families etc.
It sure was a fantastic event. The riding, scenery, comraderie, generosity & humour in the face of adversity will be a warming memory in the years to come.

Of course the fun we had wouldn't be possible without the tireless work Ryan the organiser did. As you guys are aware that was some big country to plot & log. A hell of a lot of tyre rubber, gas money & time went into creating what is without a doubt one of the best rides in New Zealand.

This is about the 5-6th Dusty butt & so far to my knowledge Ryan has asked for nothing in return for his services. He has a job, mortgage, (obviously patient) wife & young family & I'm sure most of us realise how much of a juggle that is.

As I mentioned at the rider briefing I would really like to extend an invitation for those that participated to offer a koha (gift to you poms:msn-wink:) as a thank you for Ryan for his commitment to our safety & enjoyment.

I may not have made it clear during the briefing that I would collect the money as a representative (self elected:laugh:) of the riders & pass it on as either gift vouchers from a bike shop or something similar. For liabilities sake I wouldn't want Ryan to be taking entry fees.

Thanks to those that already pmed me re this koha. I will send a group pm with my bank details to those who wish to donate. As a lot of us are in different financial situations (bike breakages don't count:facepalm:) I wouldn't want to set an amount however will put out there that many two day rides are hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

There were also some riders that were friends of friends attending. it would be great if word was passed to them that they could donate if they wished.

Thanks once again to Ryan & his crew of helpers for making this annual event keep happening & you guys for supporting the ride.

6th DB1k now. First was in 2007. It amazes me (and scares me a little if I'm honest) how much the popularity of this ride grows each year.

I'll reiterate, my helpers are Transalper and this year ADVGD. If you do provide koha of some form please try and do so in a way that I can share this with them.

Thanks for organising the ride Ryan. Appreciated much even though the Awakino challenge whupped my ass. :(

The first time I spoke with the landowner about going over Awakino Saddle he thought I was a bit nuts. I think I've proved that I'm completely nuts by taking my 950 Adv S over there in previous years. Did anybody notice Mt Cook out to their right as they road along the tops? Also I'm not sure how many realised that the 'hut' with Ida Valley on it was actually the Ida Valley Railway Station. You passed its original location when you were riding alongside the rail trail in the Ida Valley.

Yes, thanks Ryan. It was great. Even the snowy muddy bit was great in hindsight. :)

To quote some sage advise 'The true adventure starts when the plans turn to shit'. I suspect this was rather apt for some!

Thanks shrek for organizing accommodation in fairlie and including me that was a great time meeting up with you guys. By the way my bike made it back to wellington all duck taped up ringing its little head off down the moles worth ,I’m sure the dusty butt took one of it 9 lives off it, but "was" it was worth it .

Home after nearly 3000kms of the Sth Island.

Main thoughts -
Fricking cold;
snow was cool;
had no idea where I was 90% of the time;
trust the GPS;
really good bunch of blokes & blokettes - great to catch up with old friends & make new ones.
fantastic hospitality from the locals & generosity of fellow adv riders.
Glad that noone had any major accidents or injuries.

Highlites-
The snow
That road from below the snow to the Poolburn(?) dam - damn that was cool- fast & flowing.

Yep. Couldn't miss Mt Cook and thought the hut looked like a railway shack.

Bummer. In case you haven't done a collar bone before and didn't get good advice from the docs (as I didn't many years ago), try to keep the arm moving to prevent muscles seizing up. Can be very painful if you don't use it for a few days and everything seizes up. Also watch how the bone heals if it wasn't set in place. I have a permanently bent left clavicle because the losers at Tokoroa hospital didn't see fit to set the bone. Just sent me home with arm in a sling. 30 years ago so maybe medical things have improved since.

Hell, that is hard core. I'm amazed you could use it under the circumstances. I would have picked an avulsion injury rather than a # given your range of movement. You must be a tough old coot for sure. Shows you can never can tell without an xray. If its any consolation it is rare to operate from what I've seen. Home late last night from the DB after an awesome 3600 Kms.
I have been riding / racing / mucking around and falling off motorcycles for more than 35 years now and Saturday was easliy the best day i have ever had an a motorcycle.:rockon::woohoo:
Sunday was probably equally as good, it was just that i was not fully prepared for the cold conditions up on the lammerlaw range and at the serpentine church :cold:.

As i was riding up to the church and it was snowing on me again, i was thinking what sort of nutter builds a church way up here :shit:

Completed all of the challenge sections on both days, but unforntunately in the black forest section on day 2 my rear tyre cried enough and tore open a 75 mm gash.
Managed to put a tube patch on the inside of the tyre to stop the tube poking out and carried on gingerly for the next 60 kms untill 15kms from fairlie on the tarseal the patch failed again.

So a big thanks to the 2 guys from christchurch who collected me and the bike and trailered us back to fairlie.
Also a HUGE thanks to Struan for sorting out a replacement tyre for me ( or i might still be in Fairlie ) and to Roger for bringing it to me in Fairlie.

Will be back next year for sure, so that i can say i finished the whole event

Ryan, for organizing such an amazing and well run event you are a BLOODY LEGEND

Safely back last night as well, thanks Ryan and all the others that contributed to a fun filled 7 days, the GPS route was perfect for me, I still have a strong dislike for the Awakino saddle (bush bashing in the inverted position didn't seem a good riding style for that sort of terrain) but I've forgiven you now Ryan. Time for some upskilling I think!
I had a minor off on the way home but got back in one piece and judging by the list of injuries got off very lightly, only a swollen ankle.

Stephen, glad you're ok, I was surprised to see you still going on saturday with that shoulder, you're a lot tougher than you give yourself credit for, well done mate.

Special thanks to Struan for all his organising on our (Jaffas') behalf with saving us a lot of hassle over accomodation and general advice and rescuing.

Just thought I'd bump this again for those that have just got home & warmed up. I have fired off a PM to the kind people who have already contacted me & hopefully there may be a few more that would like to put their hands in their pocket to recompense the great team behind this ride.

Cheers

As a rather late finisher, I can confirm the the snow that the southerlies have brought this week as I rode up back up from Invercargill to Oxford today - took the Haka and then Mackenzies and had a great view of the snow. I didn't get back to Fairlie last Sunday as after an epic first day (with an off in a ford, but no offs on the Awakino), the Sunday was a bit of a nightmare... nail through the tyre at 7am 8km from Alex and a couple of hours mucking getting it sorted (K270's can be a bugger to get on the rim!). Running late, Patrick (KTM 690R) and myself were about 60Km out from Lawrence when the snow was horizontal and eventually we baled and snuck back there. Rode the gravel via Lake Mahinerangi and across Danseys on the Monday with Patrick heading back via Black Forest and myself heading to the Catlins for some hols. The other slight issue was totally munted rear wheel bearings... impressive when the bike passed its WOF only two weeks ago with not even a slight wiggle on the wheel. I was really impressed with Youngs Suzuki at Oamaru who replaced the wheel and cush bearings inside an hour on the Monday, including going and picking up the cush drive bearing, with my pit stop costing a very reasonable $68 inc labour.

Thanks again Ryan for organising another great DB1k, your road book was much more reliable than my DR!

Hope it heals well Aslan.

I just got Home about 11/2 hours ago after spending a week touring around the south island clocking up just over 4000kms

My DB was a bit of a non event after destroying my radiator fan on the Friday pre ride. and giving my ankle a good whack at some stage.

My first attempt at a repair to the Fan in Fairlie on the sat Morn failed fairly quick, So didn't do anything near challenging on the sat, The repair I did Sat night has held together well.

So I guess i'll have to have another go at it next year, and thanks to Grant who came and kept me company at the fairlie motorcamp while I finished my first attempt at repairing the Fan.

Bugger. I hate to tell you but if it's anything like my broken ankle it will be more than 6 weeks. Healing the bone is one thing, getting the tendons etc moving after the cast comes off is the harder part of it. I've been out of the cast almost 5 weeks and still can't walk properly but the bone itself is completely healed.

I've been out of the cast almost 5 weeks and still can't walk properly but the bone itself is completely healed.

I don't think it is bad a break as yours Eddie, I have a walking cast on as it is not direct load bearing bones that are affected, more I've broken a couple of small fragments off hence it didn't fell that bad when confined in a bike boot.

Too many Wellington Riders on the injury list. Can we all agree to stay injury free for a while now?

tend to agree with you on that. Stay safe out there Guys.

Pretty amazing ride by SE950 --doing it ,with two challenge sections in 18hrs 55min.:niceone: (Averaged almost 54km/hr)--pretty amazing when you consider the rivers--the gates--the rocks--the corners-& the navigation.etc.
(Was that the fastest time ever)
Then Budda & K14 doing it in 23hrs & 20 min.(av 43km/hr.)Was,nt a bad effort.

Can some one who did the 24hr challenge put in a report--i.e. --trials & tribulations---fuel strategy--start time.--bike prep--etc--etc.??
and how many 24hr--rs started & how many finished inside the time???:ride:

SE950 is Ian Ferris who is a very experienced off road rider who is bloody quick, I was considering riding the one dayer with him but was afraid I wouldn't have been able to keep up.
He was riding his fully kitted out KTM 450exc (including big tank) and has done the last 4-5 Dustys so knows the route, he also had a mate meet him at pre determined service points to fuel him and bike up.
I would be very very suprised if anyone would ever be able to match his time, however he was riding in drizzle and thick fog for first 2 hours (started at 03:30am) so could have been alot quicker earlier on if clear.
