I'm still lamenting north vs south. Got a couple of easy changes (I know they are goers) to the southern to spice it up a little. Also got a couple of ideas for the old northern route but no idea if they are ridable or will float with landowners.
I'm thinking that late Jan (21/22th or 28/29th) as later Jan seemed to work better for most in 2011.
Keep the comments coming. This is your guys ride so let me know what you want - and I'll decide if I like it :devil2:

Having been on one Db1k (last one) I reckon you'd be hard pressed to improve the Southern Loop - it was O for Oarsum :woohoo:

Ok, since we're kind of voting I think I would tend to vote South again too.
It was so epic last time with so many people not getting back to Fairlie until after the Pubs and Fuel Stations had closed... or was that just because of the submerged KLRs and other more social time consuming things happening?

Just ordered the big bertha tank (25 liters) for the exc so no worries for gas this year. Headlight however might slow things down a little.

Hi Ryan,so what mods have you so far ,I,m interested to know if you have fitted an oil cooler to increase the amount of oil it carries thus cutting down on the oil changes?..
Nada mods so far. We are trying to get some renovations done (young fellas room) so toy fund is very limited. Only cause of exchange rate (though I see its dipped a little) that tank has been a goer. Not planning on doing oil cooler for more volume. I've not even manged to put 20 hours on bike since christmas so have only done one oil change so far. We don't actually clock up many engine hours when riding, much less than the hours we are away from home.
Suspension is next on the list. Stock ain't right for my girth. Can live without tweaked suspenders for now but can't really live without a tank for some range. Hope to organise something like the CCC loop or a BP loop when the big tank arrives so I can get an adv ride on it under my belt. Only been trail riding so far.

Ryan I'm sorry but I'm gonna pull rank (with an W) &make it the 21/22nd January. If you give people options you'll get a million different reasons why that date doesn'tsuit.
Those who can't make it won't make it- those who are committed will get there. The sooner the date is set thenthe sooner plans &bookings can be made.

Those dates suit me fine but it doesn’t really matter because I am going regardless of the dates it falls on, too much of a great trip to miss. As to where the route is, well I really enjoyed 2011 down south, stunning stunning country, but always keen to explore new places anywhere in NZ. My only suggestion is to have more (optional) challenge sections thrown in, maybe even the possibility of different levels of challenges with some highly technical sections for the more ambitious riders.
Aside from the number of really good riders that will be attending you just know _shrek_ won't turn down a challenge, lets give him something really gritty to tackle on his GS :headbang:

The other DB1k? We are on to our 4th route and about the 6th year now, 1st 3 being all the Northern based route. The Southern route keeps evolving.
The KLR is a great bike for doing it, comfort, distance ability, just don't ride through deep puddles when you don't need to (looked around KB enough you've probably seen the pictures).
The DL650 is a bit soft for me (in my opnion) but in saying that I've seen them in places like Big River and I believe there was one on the DB1k last year or the year before?
So long as you're prepaired to drop your bikes then no worries. Not saying it will happen but you must be prepaired and a lot of us do fall over at some point on the trip. Also make sure you have bash plates on them.
The DL650 may want to avoid some of the challenge sections, but it's still a great ride either way. Tyre choice will make a difference here too, especially if it has rained recently.
Now as another stepping stone get your selves along to the CCC ride on the 6th August as posted in the 'Looking for Christchurch Adv Rides' thread starting post #223 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/133817-Looking-for-Christchurch-Adv-Rides?p=1130106545#post1130106545).

Website oh so close to launch. Just a couple of minor things to sort out. Big thanks to ADVGD for his very significant input.

What tires you using ?
Transalper
30th September 2011, 07:23
For the transalp as something with good road manners I'm using Mitas E09 Dakar front at $145 from DAS. Difference in the DAKAR version is it has a stronger carcass (one textile ply more) and the bead area has a new type of apex... what ever that means.
For rear I have a partly used E09 that will go on.
Price for the 17inch rear at the moment is $200 so I might try the more aggressive Mitas C02 rear (closer to $170) on the Transalp sometime which is cheaper. Liked it on the DR but squirms a bit on road.
If I was using the lighter (than the TA) DR650 I might have tried the Mitas C17 front for better performance in the wet ruts up the Lammermoor Ranges etc but the extra weight of the TA would likely destroy it too fast.
For something basically the same pattern as the E09's but don't know about compound and wear rates I am interested in the Michelin T63's which are a bit cheaper (rear especially) now the Mitas has crept up so far in price.
I do like getting my tyres from DAS though so gone Mitas again this round.
Taking the Alp with Janet on back this year if all goes to plan.

30th September 2011, 07:44
Yeah, DAS has really bumped the prices up for the Mitas........

For the transalp as something with good road manners also I'm using Mitas E09 Dakar front (slightly heavier carcass or sidewall or something than normal E09) at $145 from DAS.
For something basically the same pattern as the E09's but don't know about compound and wear rates I am interested in the Michelin T63's which are a bit cheaper (rear especially) now the Mitas has crept up in price that far.
I do like getting my tyres from DAS though so gone Mitas again this round.
Taking the Alp with Janet on back this year if all goes to plan.
The T63 has a very shallow tread and aren't much good in anything loose or muddy, I'm running one on the front of the DR at the moment and wouldn't again for winter riding, they are ok in the dry though.
Transalper
30th September 2011, 07:55
DAS doesn't control the price rises, that comes from the importer.
The E09 has a similar depth to the T63 which is why I might have used a C17 front if the bike was lighter.
The E09 is still better than E07 for wetter stuff, E07 being my general use favourite summer tyre, though recently I find myself trending back to knobby styles more often.
I have used the E09 both ends before and thought the were better than they looked, and this round I wanted to retain the roady side of the equation because they're going on the Transalp and I'm not willing to spend the extra to try a TKC which still clog up anyway from what I've heard/read.
On the DR I have been recently running Trelleborg T-434 front an C02 rear.
T-434 is a bit nasty on the DR until it is well worn, worked better on the TA but not as nice on highway as E09 etc still, and hard to work on as it bites hands between bead and rim.

Not according to the cycletreads online price list (http://www.cycletreads.co.nz/products/573-continental_trail/4868-continental_tkc_80_trail_tyres.aspx). There's still $40+ difference there.

ha ha, yea, and that's on special normally $250 with RRP of $290.
Mitas were not on special.
Tyres had to be bought up, two reasons,
1- to bump the Thread back up to remind people the DB1K is coming, all be it still almost 4 months away.
2- The right tyres can be a real pain to get if you leave it to the last minute.

Hi Guys.
Its finally here. The DB1k website is now live! A massive thank you to ADVGD for all his hard work. :not:
http://www.db1k.com
Head over to the site to register yourself as a rider. This year you can pay for your entry on line so there is no cash worries on the night - meaning more time for talking bikes, riding and having a good time. Also this year ride T-shirt are available. This are a great way for your to have a bit of memorabilia for the ride and a great way to contribute towards the costs of organising the ride. I will not be organising any accommodation this year. But have a look at the accommodation page to find options and get on an organise accommodation soon.
The site has been built to automate the registration progress and should be intuitive but feel free to use the contact page to get in touch should you need too.
Cheers R

I've no idea what the Lammermoors are like, but WRT to Shink705s, I've got one on the back of the KLR and it proved surprisingly capable in pretty snotty Karipoti wet clay - letting the bike plonk through on torque rather than revving its tits off was the go.
Don't have rimlocks, either so the tyre was at normal road pressure.

Ok, but you're not using it on the front though ?
KLRs and DRs are also only mid sized, while I feel the argument still applies to them, it applies a lot more to the bigger bikes I was aiming at.
Like I said somewhere before, I've pushed bikes needlessly that had no forward drive on soft riverbed and up slippery slopes and seen others get stuck or fall repeatedly on relatively easy slipperyness who eventually turned back because of their tyre choice.
I'll still help push a stuck bike but if they haven't bothered to at least put decent tyres on to help themselves I will not be impressed.
No doubt I'll need a hand myself in a river or two but it won't be because of my tyres.
I see the DB1k website is now up and I didn't notice any specific mention of tyres so with every rider ultimately being responsible for their own choices and having said my warning I'll not (short of maybe posting a short video of good examples because that could be entertaining) argue the point any further.
I just registered.

Don't want to turn this into a tyre thread BUT - I went and checked and there is a Shinko on the front as well.

Just idly looking at the rider stats again, while at a glance the DR650 is king with 9 of them I notice 15 KTM's of various size making me think the colour of the ride is orange.
And 17 Suzuki's...

But I bet the 17 Suzukis aren't all the same colour, though no guarantee the KTM's will all be orange but more likely than not.

I think if you look at models the EXC stands out with 10. Excluding piston, crank and barrel all EXC regardless of CC's are basically the same bike.

Haha, I see Straun has chose a different steed this year.
I have some choice words on a video somewhere of him lamenting his choice last year.
I will still ride slow and fall off (often), but at least the DT is lighter to pick up....
Major downside of the 230 is limited fuel range so going to have to carry a heap of extra fuel & or set up some secret fuel dumps prior.

Ryan I may be ahead of myself as the details will be released on 1st Dec however I was thinking about the fuel supplies. I ended up this year limping back into Alex due to my mistake of not filling up where I should (Kurow?) then getting to the next fuel station otematata (?) & finding it dry.
Any thoughts for next year?

Yes you are getting ahead of yourself and next time pay more attention to the little fuel stop sheet. It was there for you to plan your stops. If you miss your own stops well, maybe you're beyond help.
If you are playing follow the leader you better have a leader that is stopping where you need to and won't miss their stops either.
I am laughing here, dig dig.

Distance between fuel stops is a real headach for me. I want to create a route that takes in all the good bits and minimal seal bits. Also want to go past reliable fuel stops. All seems like a good idea right?
I've just come up with my ideal route but the longest leg between fuel stops would be 290km. Those of us with monsta tanks no worries, but bit much me thinks for the average bike. Back to the drawing board to adjust the route to try and include another fuel stop. Got a couple of options - just need to check out how reliable their fuel is and if they are open on a Sunday.

A couple of options for extending range …
Large tank - $300-$650 (Just Gas Tanks (www.justgastanks.com) or Safari Tanks (www.safaritanks.com.au))
Fuel bladder - US$129-US$144 (Just Gas Tanks (http://justgastanks.com/Fuel-Bladders/c335/index.html))
Rotopax Fuel Packs – US$49 upwards (Rotopax (www.rotopax.com/Gasoline/))
The mates that are joining me on KTMs and haven't ridden a DB1K before are all setting their bikes up with long range tanks, it will be an investment worthwhile and will serve them well for future rides

Registered as well. If this is the only ride I do this January, it will be this....Most Definitely....
I have two bladders available, fuel that is.....from liquid containments. I can bring these down as well. One holds approx 4-5 litres, the other is 10-12 litres depending on how much you fill them...allowing for vapour expansion etc in the heat. Let me know if anyone wants one to use....will help with the range factor if you are a bit short. I ain't tankerin' any.....:)

Reasonable tent. The pole does need to be shortened 12cm else it will not work. The manufacturer/importer deny any problem and say you're not putting it up properly.
You've got to stake out the floor first and the single pole is self supporting.
Not too bad $$/weight wise.
At the moment, I'll be using mine as I havn't adventure tented since Big River in Feb 2009.

Strong contender for my next Adv bike me reckons...:headbang:
Nice one for sale here (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/dual-purpose/auction-423215539.htm). Ya'd better learn the knack to kicking over a bike though :msn-wink:
And I don't mean like this vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zibj7KnjClk), though it is the best use for a KLR :bleh:

I like the way those big tanks make the XR's look too.
Agreed, they do look the business.

What do you southern guys recommend for a 650 to get thru all the challenge bits successfully? I've not seen the gnarly bits - would knobblier tyres make a great deal of difference more than E07s? Is it traction on muddy surfaces, loose clayey stones, or largeish ruts/ rocks that are the problem?

What ya mean. I've taken a 950 Adv through all of it (twice or more) with a half worn E-07 rear and well worn D606 front. :bleh:
The challenge south of Kurow is mostly loose rock. There is some silt/clay mixed with rock on part of the hill climb and just pure silt/clay across some of the flats. Should all be ridable with E07 even in the wet though obviously slower in the wet. North of Lawrence is a bunch of silt/clay with ruts ranging from shallow to footpeg depth that was generally wet last year. Few had some fun in this and knobblies would be a help but the km's of this isn't huge.
There is a bit of every surface in this ride but it is mostly gravel/rock. Your choice re tyres but if you want the all round traction but not best anywhere a E09 or similar but if you prefer to use a E07 or simiar then that will do the trick as well. I'm using a Mitas C-17 front and C-02 rear this year but I'm riding a bike that doesn't weight much (anything) and is kinda fun with a bit of traction.

Guys check this out. Pre made roll chart holder for sale at Torpedo 7. Need to measure old roll chart to check if it would fit. I can provide an A5 wide (about 3x the width) version of the roll chart that will fit for width.
Seems it mounts to handle bar brace bar (top bar).

Looks like a good thing,
If you made a wider chart would the print be bigger ?
The only problem I have with the small one is being able to focus my worn out old eyes on the print.

Last year Ryan sent us the .rbf file so we could make wider scrolls with bigger text and room for extra notes. It was good to be able to read it more easily, and not load Ryan with yet another task. If we can do this again for 2012 then its easy to share with anyone that uses a wider roadbook.

Was hoping you or Topo might chime in. I think the text was bigger but can't confirm till tonight. No problem for me to create another version of it at A5 and put up a link.
Also what was the dimention of the roll chart when on one spool. The holder is only 68mm deep i.e. roll chart at start of ride needs to propbably have a diameter of less than 60mm. 1000km of instructions is a lot of paper to roll up and drives me to be as efficient as possible with text sizes/drawings.
I've just emailed T7 about a bulk order. If they are happy to talk I'll post details here.

The full roll will fit no problem, i guess last years one was only 40mm(ish) in diameter.
At that price i think you should scrap the gps side of things eh:niceone:

Thanks for confirming the diameter of a roll. You reckon people would cope with only a roll chart. There would be abandoned bikes for lack of fuel all over central I reckon. Hmmm on second thoughts . . . .
Couple of sample pages. First one set up to print at A5 (portrait) and the second the traditional sizing. Definitely easier to read the A5 size chart. Comparing the two layouts for the 2010 roll chart you'd need 12 pages (A5 two per A4 page) vs 8 pages (double sided) for the traditional. I'll provide both options on the website with the A5 version already set up to print two per page.

Scooter Boyz Challenge?
Feel free. The only two who have completed a Small Bore (125cc) Challenge took 22hrs 45 mins. If you think you can complete the ride on a scooter (regardless of CC) in less than 24 hours good luck. I'd be interested to see it completed it even 36 out of 48 hours.
Have I laid down the gauntlet enough for you Nordie :msn-wink:

What the hell man? We finished it in 22 hours 45 min. Or there about. Moving time was something like 18 hours. If you are going to try an SBC, I recommend starting in the morning. Worst. Night. Ever.

You reckon you would feel better arriving back at 0345 in the morning?
