Went to fire her up today for teh lulz, not playing ball.
A mixture of issues methinks.
It's not really lifting fuel through the carbs and the intake rubbers were loose
I think the fuel is properly stale now anyway.

So, just having lunch and will peel the carbs out, raise the fuel level, clean them and set the pilot screws to 2-3/4 out.
Need to put washers under the needles, easy.
Need to go buy more jets, will wait 'till it's running, but from what researching tells me a set of Dynojet 136/Keihin 148 jets will do the job, or Mikuni 127.5 (which I have only one...)
For those who didn't know, a few models of Keihin and Mikuni jets are interchangeable, but the numbering is on the piss, here's a link.

More issues!
I NEED a 41mm socket...
Managed to get the LHS fork cap off, then failed at bleeding the fork with the new fluid
My giant stupid spanner slipped on the RHS and I've done my hand a big mischief :weep: and I cannot for the life of me make it budge
I thought it could be the top triple crimping the fork tube, but, no.

So after three hours I have one rock solid fork with no preload or damping adjustment and one almost dry fork that I can't open.

Oh well, off to find a big socket!
I won't be put off that easily. It's a shame I now have no $$$ after buying the brake rebuild kits because there's a set of forks in Palmy for $300 ish :girlfight:

So I went FOR A RIDE!!!!

And it was awesome

:headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang: :headbang:

Few issues to iron out.
Forks, incredibly hard, then blew the left hand seal
Haven't wired the speed cut correctly, it cuts out at 10krpm in each gear.
When turning the forks left it pushes or pulls the throttle open.
Gear lever is set a little high.
Throttle is a bit too stiff.
Wheels unbalanced, hasn't got the pilot power on the front yet anyway.
Really, really need some seat foam.
Might need a mirror and a number plate

The good
Fueling is bloody nice right up to where it cuts out, clean and smooth.
Lots more pep with the jetting, 4-1 and the ignition advance is back to standard :2thumbsup
Brakes are brilliant feeling.

Righto, have covered about 130km on her.

Issues?
Forks, still, obviously.
Not too chuffed with the brake feel, but methinks it's throwing fork fluid on the left disk
Rear shock is too hard (the massive drop in weight is very noticeable)
Exhaust leak at the midpipe, meh, 5 minute fix
I'm not too certain if the analogue temp gauge is accurate, my digital one is still in the mail
But the cooling fan works and hasn't activated during a ride.
Needs a mudguard and a pan under the tail...
The 10,000rpm issue.

The Good?
All of it. I can't stay away from it

I have done the rear view camera. be warned, it is not legal on its own, the VIRM is clear about lenses specifically and some such BS that basically means that, despite a camera offering considerably better rearward vision, it is NOT legal without a certification, and to get a WOF, you WILL beed to have a mirror attached to the bike.

The cam setup is pretty sick though, good vision, and offers a few other bonuses, send me a PM if you want photos and details etc of setups plus some links etc if you decide you really want to do it.

legally, you only need one mirror, so that should be sufficient,
if you are going to need a cert, make sure you have all your ducks lined up first, get ONE cert with everything on it. If you are doing that, then the cam mod shouldnt be a problem, as you can have that on your cert plate anyway.

One option is have the cam mounted etc, the chick a bar end on for the WOF. in all likely hood, if you got pulled up and questioned, I think most cops would take one look at the camera, and say well, fuck, you obviously have way more rearward vision than a standard mirror, and not worry about it.

one bonus is that some of the kits you can buy piecemeal have an output that you can hookup to record either to an sd card, or on a loop f say 5 min or whatever, so you can record what the rear can sees.

You can also hook up a front cam, and toggle between cams - easy to set up, might be fun for trackdays or making general vids etc.
another option (one i considered) wore a small button into the left hand switch gear, that is hooked up to the screen, the button can toggle between the screen displaying your GPS, and your rearward camera. not tough to set up at all.

Oh, the setup, cables, wiring, fuses, infra red night vision camera, and the screen can all be landed at you door for around (or less than) $70.

fucking cheap.

Wheile the front was off I pulled the Shitko off the front rim and the Pilot Power is now all sexy and wrapped around it.
If anyone wants a free "good" Shinko, 120/60-17 take it.

No work got done on it today, I'm crook :(
Hopefully it'll be running happily by the end of the week!

Should have stayed inside today, but man-flu is my bitch, not otherwise.
Rebuilt forks
10W oil in them
Backed the rear shock off a little
Forks back in, speedo drive lubed.
Put the Pilot Power on the front.

Was talking to Drunkenmistake about putting a 48t sprocket on, standard is 45t.
Was looking through one of my parts boxes, found two 49t sprockets :D
So, it now has shorter gearing.

Differences in gearing:
Stock 15/45t Current 15/48T
104km/h 97km/h
154km/h 144km/h
196km/h 184km/h
237km/h 222km/h
269km/h 252km/h
302km/h 283km/h
All at 15,000rpm on the limiter.
Stock RPM in 6th at 100km/h 4954rpm
Now 5285prm

Should be a noticeable difference.

1 tooth on the front = longer. One on the bum = shorter.

Will wait for the mud guard to come and the 10Kohm resistor that I have yet to order before I ride the beast again.

So if anyone heard something going brrrrrmbabababababapopbrrrbabababapopbrrbababababp op that was me.

It turns in very nicely now, not VFR400 fast, but feels more positive than before.
The forks work very nicely.
It now has the full 15,000rpm.
It goes far, far better than before and it has a big exhaust leak

Right-o.

Bikes parked in the garage begging for me to make it moar pretty. So I'm deciding what to do there.

On a bit of a side note, I think the next bike I acquire should be a twin. It's not possible to enjoy the power of the 600 and be even remotely legal, even with the 48t rear it's pulling 180k or so in third

I love how you can enjoy a twin and be doing "sane" speeds.
On this wee fellow it turns on something chronic at 7000rpm and it's bloody addictive, problem being, it's silly to be using that power and beige as fuck when you're not.

It's really nice to ride now, great for a back road carve up, seat foam may help even more.

Another issue I have, is every time I go to Palmy and stop in to see Bogan, I need to buy a Bros650 again. My one was superb fun and sounded amazeballs.

I got a little OCD again today.

Last ride revealed an oil leak on the RHS somewhere.
So, I was on my back under the bike and the sump was dirty...toothbrush and petrol...oil lines need a clean too... this went on for a while. So it's spotless and I know it's seeping past the lower washer on the RHS feed to the oil cooler and I suspect the gaskets on the RHS aren't too happy, but this all works out for my grand plan for the timing cover, will reveal later in this post.

I found a leak on my rear brake M/C. Me being me pulled out a spare M/C and while looking for pretty banjo bolts found a set of seals for it (Fuck, I keep finding parts I forget I've got)
So, me, still being me, polished the spare M/C up. Looked wanky, so painted it black...looks awesome
But then I had to find new bolts and polish them, because the old ones were burred and ugly.
Then the rest of the rear set/peg looked poo.
So I stripped it all down, polished most of it and painted one part silver (behind where the peg sits, would be a dick of a thing to keep polished)
Then I had to polish up the bolts for the rear set, they looked wanky, so I scuffed 'em up and now they're nice/brushed looking.

BUT THEN!!!!!!! the rear brake light switch looked gheeey.
So, I pulled it apart, painted the bracket black, cleaned it up inside and looked at it for a bit.
The wires went straight up from it, which I bloody hate, ugly sinful things.
So, off with the switch again and removed the rubber condom thing on top, bent the wires over flat and put a different condom thing on (a right angle one from a spare starter motor feed) and cleaned it up too, nice and pretty and black and not an eye-sore.
Then the bolt for that looked ugly...

So, I got all that together and I've miss-placed a banjo bolt that I'd polished up, will find it tomorrow.

I now want to hide the rear reservoir, because it just looks stupid, might see if I can mount it behind the peg. (Don't want a big black line running up under the tail, how crass)

Right, so that's all happening and I've had to pull the other rear set to re-detail it to match lol

Timing cover plan: I'm going to start making some carbon parts in the near (I hope) future. I'll be making a carbon timing cover, I'll also be wanting a cut-out one with a sight hole just for wank factor.
Was thinking I could also wrap the tank/tail in real carbon too...I love carbon :tugger:

So, there will probably be a few more random OCD type updates, there are little bits all over the place that fuck me off, like wiring, I hate wires being seen, the loom is total gay-burger, I'd like to make it one piece where it exits the frame and is seen, but I'll build a full loom for it one of these days (Probably around the time when I decide it needs fuel injection)

Do it. After owning 2 I would easily own another. And if someone clued up works the motor they get tight as and serious start to haul.
With a mild cam and hot CDI they sound bloody mint.
With upgraded forks and Konis/IKONS on the back they haul ass.

Not to mention all up they weigh less than a cup of tea.
Honda should remake it, at least the 400 version. The only other 400 single that I have ridden that comes close power wise was the DRZ. SRX, FT, SS 400's all fail in comparision to the little NC20.

Oh and the dual seat unit is actually more comfortable than the single seater.

ok will start build thread.. i dunno under which section since its not a bike but will find a spot.

yea mine should be fairly cool, 3.6m long, 2.0m wide, winch to drag up bikes/sidecar if your by yourself at home or last one at the track or something so can load and unload solo with no probs.

Fully enclosed, inside will have a fold down work bench, maybe a fold down bed for north island racing ventures in the future. plug sockets built in, prob hooked up to a bank of batteries or something. Haven't sussed all the finer details yet :)

def having an onboard fuel tank with fuel pump, and proper storage for spare wheels and tyres and spares for the bikes.. and tool boxes etc etc. Can't think of anything else for now, prob put little nipples on one side of the roof so we can extend a bit of a tarp/awning off the side as shelter in the pits with that half side of the trailer opening up a bit so we have access to bench space and tools.

yea

build thread will be clearer than my ramblings.. so far just the frame getting tacked up and choosing some rims. I want 17" mags but they will bounce everywhere on leaf springs eh?

ZX6E/ZZR600E radiator (bolts on, better looking and has different top pipe mount)
ZX6E Cams (why the F not?)
SS pipe for noms headers.
Fuck loads of wire and terminals, re-loom.
Rear shock (maybe)

Should be raping my eBay account soon then!

Almost forgot, still have a small hole in the mid range, so I'll raise the needles and she should be happy.

Ebay is my biiiitch

It has one small leg on each side bolting to the tail unit made out of alloy, one snapped around the bolt to the tail. Oops...
Speedo isn't too secure looking at the end of third gear either.

if youre gonna look into doing carbon fibre stuff later on, why not buy a small kit, and start your learning curve on small items. really when you look over the bike, you will find an endless number of little small brackets and bits and pieces all over the show that you could make out of CF. be a good way to shed some weight and practice on things that probably wont get seen before you make an expensive fuckup on something big

;) Steps ahead, I have taken them.
I can lay carbon.
Big bits like tank/tail will be kevlar reinforced and vacuum bagged.

Please don't start me on making little bits out of carbon, you don't want to see my carbon love get out of hand
Carbon headlight, handle bars, airbox, intake trumpets, carb tops, engine cases, rocker cover, speedo housing, every bracket, exhaust can.

So my mission when that's here is:
Shorten the muffler, get sound clips/pics. :2thumbsup

It's nice as it is, quiet on the road, sexual when at full noise.
Where's the fun in that? As if any other aspect of this thing is sensible.

would be cool though, little one-off hand made bits here and there, thats what its all about!

Spent all day sorting the mess Kawasaki keeps telling me is a loom and making the alloy under tail thingy-ma-jig.
Got my new temp gauge, let's hope this fucker works.

Couldn't resist a 9:30pm shit quality pic of it 267823

Today was incredibly time consuming, started at 8, only just decided to give up for the day and go in to the warmth for a cuppa.
Hopefully the tail thing-whats-it turns out okay :oi-grr:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/zAvg-Y23ZQY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Took 4 inched off the muffler, because I bloody can (hah, can, pun)
Finished all the wiring.
As you can see the temp gauge works, yay!
Finished the under tail unit, it follws the subframe, not the fairing, but it looks a lot better than it did.
Mounted a PC fan to the reg/rec from an old power supply I had in the garage, mounted the reg/rec in a clever place, will post a pic one of these days.
Made a battery clamp.
New exhaust mount, mounts to the rear master cyl mount, rock-fuggin-solid.

I'll make a new spacer for the seat too, the one in it is ugly (yeah you can't see it, it's under the seat...but still)

Very chuffed with what I got done today :2thumbsup

I'm being a little pedantic again, so no real progress

Got in to the garage at 7:30 this morning (yes I like to be in the garage, very therapeutic blah blah, good when you're a bit mad)
Was looking at the engine covers on the bike and though I better fix/ind the oil leak.
Turns out it's the rocker cover, so, what does Doug do?
He removes the:
Radiator
Oil cooler
Headers
Oil lines
Drops the oil, removes filter
Drops the sump for cleaning...
Cleans the motor with a rag, the tooth brush
Cleans all the copper washer in the oil lines, then throws them away.
Go on to the webbernet and order, oil filter, rocker cover gasket, oil line o-rings, sump gasket, all washers for the oil lines and I've put new o-rings on the fron coolant pipes in the head/block (again...)

Going to re-paint the radiator after flushing it, grab a new waterpump o-ring, or install the polished ZZR400 water pump and paint the headers.
Might as well check the valves again, only did that 3000km ago... and the tensioner (I have a spare polished one too!)
Better paint the calipers again...

No signs of valve stem seal leakage in the ports either :D

My madness is getting worse! I should just ride the fucking thing

One must note that none of this has anything to do with the rocker cover, to get that out you just pop the tank off

ducatilover
13th August 2012, 16:12
The sump had some tasty bits in it...
A few bits of shit that looked like woven fabric, I'm assuming it was tiny strands of the original stator insulation.
A and a small amount of swarf type crap, nothing too serious. (being a ZZR it'll be the dogs on 2nd gear...)
So I cleaned it, twice.
Cleaned the oil pump screen, was fuckin' filthy
Cleaned out the oil lines to the cooler, cooler is soaking at the moment, so hopefully that'll be mint inside :D
So it's all nice and clean under there now, until I go near the road again.

Whilst I was under the bike, I cleaned the shock linkages, and found something awesome. It's a later model shock (How I never noticed is beyond me) it has the damping adjuster underneath it, so maybe I can get something resembling a pliant ride from it...?
I've had the shock off before to paint the spring, so I'm fucked if I know how that went unseen.

Going to rebuild my spare water pump,
Got the original off and it has shitty seals and the bearings and carbon seal were...roooooooted.
Tapped the shaft out and the outer bearing collapsed, balls all over everything!!! (How teh ladies looove it)
The oil seal obv failed and the center between the bearings was full of oil, so the bearings have had it (they're sealed...well, were)

Fun times! Moar dosh to spend

Bearings are $3.20 ea for stainless 2RS puppies, oil seal is around the $5 mark, if anyone is needing a ZZR400K/N or 600D/E pump rebuild, I'll do it :D

Pulled the spare pump apart, bearings have seen better days, I think that motor had 74,000km so no surprises, but it was perfectly dry, no signs of leaking past the seals.
The impeller shaft is mint too, measures a wee bit bigger and more consistent than the original (which is properly rooted looking)
Parts should be in teh mail tomorrow.

I'm toying with the idea of a small bikini fairing, so might mock one up this afternoon

What I've done:
Water pump rebuild/cover polished
Cleaned everything
New sump gasket
Oil pump screen cleaned
Sump cleaned
Headers painted black
New front loom for the speedo, had a short when full lock left
Headlight is now block, top triple is black and the clip ons are black
Oil line o-rings and washers replaced.
Oil line/cooler washers replaced
Water pipes to block/head cleaned out and replace o-rings (again, why not?)
Got rid of the hazard light switch and a few wires here and there by using the back half of the 600 switch block (currently using 400 ones)
Clutch switch gone, useless thing that it...I know if I'm in gear

To do this week:
Mock up bikini fairing
Oil/filter
148 jets
Vinyl wrap front guard for a giggle :D
finish trimming the under tail
Make manometer and sync carbs
Valve clearances

belly pan looks okay, apart from the rough shape, maybe a little more height at the front of the pan, and a smotther line to the back would look pretty good!!

Also you need to reroute that fuckin clutch cable, it stands out, and it aint like you to leave something like that hangin out like a well-used hookers meat curtains.

By 'sort' you mean acutaly use some? I can see how that might enhance comfort :innocent:

I'll go to the local upholstery place and see what they can get me.
I love the race-foam/minimalist look, but it's a tiny, little, iddy-bitty bit useless.

I softened the rear damping and it's now down to 1/5th from full soft on the pre-load, backed the front damping off a total of three clecks too.

Had "one of those" rides, absolute gold.
I was going to pop down the shops to grab some cutting compound, as ya do... and I went for a 150km stroll  got the latest FastBikes mag, some new headphones and a rather decent triple espresso mid ride, and forgot the cutting compound, oh well!

Beautiful day, lovely bike!
Rode some wicked twisties (Mangamaire, Pahiatua track, then back again, popped out some back roads and over to Alfreton and back through Eketahuna) the bike was turning in real nice compared to how it usually does, those pilot powers never cease to make me happy too!
Rode at a moderate pace (slow for most people...). I did however notice, the bike squirms a wee bit here and there in mid corner on bumps, so the damping or that rear preload is too soft? But, it's not really an issue.
Much more comfortable now, just a wee bit of memory foam on the seat will sort it methinks.
Was nice to look at the reflections in my polished bits of people and traffic while having a coffee :sunny:

So I got home, grins aplenty and my umber plate has gone AWOL  re-traced my steps, and nup, cannot find it.

Too bad, was worth it to finally have a face splitting happy ride.

So, to add to the "shit to buy" list:
Different shock (I hear SV units fit, but they're shit)
Re-valve the forks, or something.
More riding, lots more!
Fancy seat foam
A new number plate
148 jets.

 Still grinning

I have been contemplating (someone slap me) selling this one when it's done for a nice twin... a VTR thou suits me down to the ground (no, not in a crashing sense)
The 600 is silly fun, but to enjoy the engine one really must be rather silly, and I'm not making the gearing any shorter, it's short enough in 1st as it is.

Interesting to hear. Mine already has a later model shock, but it's not exactly a work of art. I've seen SV shocks fitted in to the ZZR and it's not hard to do really, so SV/636 might be worth looking in to

Switched the ignition on (mmm RFID tag, win) and the fan for the reg/rec shat itself.
Thankfully I'd just snaffled four more... so I threw another in. The fan motor itself had shat out, so incase vibrations had fucked it, I rubber mounted it.

I figured 99% of the handling problem was me. Got used to the bike a bit more/in the groove and she's a peach in the corners, can turn in as fast as I want, is nice 'n' stable, just need to do something about the shit damping in the front (it's reasonable, but not excellent)

There are several variants of GN lights, early Jap ones used a different bulb to the Chinese ones.
But I've been meaning to grab some H series bulbs and do a conversion sometime, so when I've done that I'll do a write up

Decisions.

To keep it when it's done?
I simply cannot hop on it and have a leisurely cruise and enjoy myself like I do/did on the GN, or my Spada, CB400, Bros etc, or before I decided to build it like this.
It's beautiful when you're moving at a fast pace (fast for me, probably not very impressive, but getting close to my testicular displacement), it's not fun at a beige pace.
I went for a zoom today on a real grouse road or two and found myself doing some stupid speeds, whilst the bike was perfectly stable, I don't like being so mad on the road (front guard didn't rub on the private road doing 200+ either)
It's incredible how it becomes such a great feeling thing when you're doing spastic speeds and leaning like the pilot powers tell me to, yet at a normal pace it feels heavy.

It still needs a seat mount, finish the undertail, paint and to be rego/wof'd and I have no idea what it'd be worth.

I really don't know. :(
