With a week to go.I see theres still 9 riders that haven't fronted up with the coin..
just a thought...maybe a payment cut off date..Any riders that haven't payed by that date
there place is given to the riders that were two slow to reg in the first 150..
Seems a shame that these guys could be keeping serious riders out...
Yep looks like those 9 still havent paid. :nono: Shame for anyone who wanted to go but was too slow entering.
Guess its too late for them now though.

Five of them are KTM riders, am I reading between the lines?, cost to much to run?, still saving up to ride?, maybe orange really is lemons, come on boys tip the gorse out of your pockets. :bleh:

Some good and some bad in this. There are a few 'foreigners' who have arranged to pay me on the night (seems banks don't like talking internationally) - all good. The bad is the small number who have not paid and are not responding to emails. Not impressed.
No reserves left but also like you say its too late now too.

Just when you thought everyone was on the same page there is always someone to prove you wrong. I think putting a time limit on payment would be a good idea, no money within two weeks and you drop of the radar.
I guess that also means for sausages for us then

Anyone know of a DB1k capable bike going cheap or for hire ?
SpeedoJosh is over on the ADV Rider forum (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=20487420#post20487420) about given up looking by the sound of it. Poor guy thought everyone would see his posts over there in the other place and never made it on here.
He's currently in Christchurch if I read correctly.

OK, firstly thanks for your advice and also cooneyr for your's as well. Both steered me towards what I think is a solution for loading the DB routes on my Garmin Montana 650T.
One has to start by defining a suitable 'Profile'. I created a new Profile for the DB that is based on the 'Classic' Profile in the device. You could probably use the Classic Profile and set that up, but I elected to make a new Profile specifically for the DB, or any other offroad type trips.
Then, for that particular Profile, you 'Setup' the device for what is called 'offroad' on other Garmins. The Montana achieves this 'offroad' status another way as follows: "Main Menu -> Setup -> Routing" leads you to 3 sub-menu settings: Activity, Lock-on-Road, Route Transitions. Set 1. Activity => 'Direct Routing". Set 2. Lock-on-Road => "No". Set 3. Route Transitions => 'Auto'.
That solved my previous problem and the Montana now loads an entire route (e.g. Main A). Now comes a new problem: I can load and do 'Where To' on all four of the 250 point routes but the Montana can only open two of the routes: 'Main A' and 'Main B+Clnge'. The other two routes won't open in the Montana for some reason. However, I think I found a way round this. Namely, in BaseCamp I can convert 'Main A+Chlnge' that is in the Garmin, from a Route to a Track. Then when I do 'Where To' and select Tracks, it displays the entire 'MainA+Chlnge' as a Track which I appear to be able to use the same way as if it was a Route. Any foreseeable issues in doing it this way?
I have documented all the Setup settings for my new DB1k 'Profile' referred to above, and will attempt to attach it to this message. It may be useful to anyone else with a Montana 650. Or, if anyone has better suggestions for settings, I'm always looking for ways to improve things. If the attachment fails to work, I am happy to email it to anyone interested.
Again, thanks for the useful pointers. Much appreciated.

Replying to my own post:
So 14.06 kpl or 7.11 l/100k or 21l for the Alexandra-omarama leg or (12l in the saddle bags !) - on the thirsty side, but I was having fun not nursing it.
See you Friday!
P
Thanks for that. I don't have my own records but had worked out 14 k/l with averaging research. With a 4 l aux tank and a 12 l main will still have to refuel b4 Omarama but it will be comfortable at that point.

I have the 07 450EXC with the 9L tank and got 120k on the main tank and 160k to bone dry during my last adventure ride around St Bathans way (80% gravel, 20% track/trail) I carried another 2L and stretched it out to 200k, riding conservatively during the last 80k.
My son tells me I tend to ride a bit like an old man (mid rather the full revs) i guess he's right, because...well, I am ;)

16th January 2013, 13:07
Sounds about right. How did you carry the extra 2 litres as a matter of interest? I will (again) be riding conservatively for the same reasons. My son now refers to me as "the old man", a riding companion as "an old guy". Denial does not appear to be successful. Loved a recent quote " depending on the day, either perceived as a middle aged wannabe or a 90 yr old has been":(

A couple of empty 1L oil bottles, works well, can handle the petrol without breaking down, airtight and fit inside a backpack without any worries.
Now that I know how far I can go I just add them as soon as I have enough room in the tank so I don't have to carry them.

Guys, is this forecast for real that I just read?
Heavy rain is again expected to hit the South Island.
Moving in late tomorrow and for much of the weekend, torrential rain is predicted for the West Coast of the South Island, the Southern Alps, Fiordland and Lakes and rivers in Otago and Canterbury.
Strong winds should also be expected to last throughout the weekend in Southland, Clutha and Dunedin.
I hope not for the Dusty Butt, surely not...

Other injury is the lady pillioning on a 990adv. She was off to Oamaru for xray for suspected broken foot. Unfortunately don't remember their names.
wx all good. lots of sun. bit of wind over Awakino saddle and couple of spots of rain near omakau.

We came through the Awakino about 2 hours behind you guys, I never saw your number plate but funnily enough mine rattled off (still have about 3cm of it under the bolts) on the same stretch of track <_<
Passed a drowned KTM left beside the river and will going back today to recover a drowned Yamaha (another story that will be embellished over a few ), I was pleasantly surprised we didn't pick up any punctures as some of those pointy rocks made a few of the hill climbs pretty knarly.

Cheerz all for the "condolences"
DR650 Tango - be to much bike for me .....
The bearing were those cheap ass All Bearing Racing that some bike shops seem to supply - guy on KTM his bearing went after just hitting the Waimak on way down - and thought the shop had put in All Bearing Racing too - seem to not like even the "sniff" of water - will just goto bearing shop next time.
Coming out of the second sheep station on way down to Fairlie (bout 30k from mayfield) two guys were sitting in a fulton hogan truck as we rounded the corner - they had dug a square edged ditch (Like for their amusement) - costly for many - shoshini bent both rims on the DR - front one to the point he wont need to break the bead to get the tyre off. Pete-blen another bent rim and blown fork seal.
Drowned bikes on one river we crossed on the fourth sheep station, not the best sight bikes lying on their side as a river that normally runs at a 3 but is now 27 "runs" over the top of them ...

Re the Fulton Hogan drain diggers, If the drain or trench was anywhere on part of the road itself and there were no roadworks/ speed restriction signs up then they are liable for any damage caused by it. If it was fully signed up then its up to Drivers/Riders to obey them and use a bit of common sence.

Have the incident on video no signs or cones to show that there was damage across the road.
Look liked a ford except the shape didn't look natural looked to square like it had been dug up. The Fulton Hogan truck with the digger on the back was parked on road not far ahead not sure why they were there though.
I pulled out just before Waimate and headed home bike was to hard to handle and I didn't want to come off and hurt myself.

if the work involved takes less than 10 minutes then no signage is required, BUT, We only ever do this when there is good visibility both ways, if not then some sort of warning at the apex of the nearest corners like a work vehicle with its beacon going or someone standing there. Good on ya for the video, My first thing would be to ring the local council for that area because they let the contracts for the road repairs and their roading engineer is responsible for regulation compliance for all their contractors.
If correct signage has been used, The contractor takes over legal ownership of the stretch of road between the signs and they are legaly responsible for the safety of all people who use that piece of road. If there were no signs then the local council is fully responsible for the condition of the road.
Good Luck

Only a few pics this year as I was involved with running the Southern Rider Rally. These are all from the Thompson's creek crossing. If anyone wants a high definition copy, just drop me a pm with your email address. Help in identifying the riders would also be appreciated.

Hi everyone,
Thanks heaps for helping me fix the orange beast up on the Lammormoor Range.
If anyone's picked up a Scottoiler or a green bag with some food and a water bladder, would you mind letting me know? I'll happily pay for postage and a pint.
Ryan, great job organising the ride.
Hope everybody got home safe and sound.
Cheers

Early Sat morn I got the call that Speedo Josh had binned & of course my main concern was for the gear I had lent him.
Found him only 10km's into the ride - he was in agony but pic with skid comes first:

When i heard Josh had dropped my bike i just went  as my mates reminded me "I told you so" about loaning my bike to a complete stranger sight unseen. But, I reckon as long as he "pays it forward" its all good.
PS: XS650 Thanks for dropping off the bike, I wasn't looking forward to the trip to collect it:wari:

Well that was an epic DB1K.
Many thanks to Ryan and his band of helpers for once again organising an fantastic weekend. You guys rock :Punk:
Struan was also everywhere helping us all out. Thanks mate. :2thumbsup
Matt, thanks for organising the pre DB shake down ride again. :woohoo:
It's rather ironic that I spent quite a few $'s building my version of the ideal Adv bike for last years DB only to discover on Matts Chch to DB ride that the bike was way too tall for me and I didn't feel confident or competent enough to tackle the challenge sections on it, which had been my intention. This year I bought an XR250L for about a third of what I spent on the KTM with the intent to do the challenge sections for the first time. So on my 'girls bike' - thanks Buddha#81 :bash: this old fart knocked off the complete DB including all the challenge sections :wings: My bag of old bones sure does ache today though - legacy of a couple of minor spills. The wee Honda didn't miss a beat for the trip, didn't use a drop of oil, just needed fuel and chain lube. It mightn't be fast or flashy but it got the job done with no fuss or bother and coped with everything, even when it seemed the deeper Awakino river crossings were almost over the seat it just plugged on through. Thanks Roger and Lee for your company and for putting up with a slow :scooter:old fella and being such great riding companions.
Great to catch up with the regular bunch and some new faces. Can't wait for next year.... Cheers.

Finally did the dusty butt! After a couple years of missing out due to timing/bike issues.
Thanks to CooneyR and team for putting on such a great event. It was an awesome ride. Went on quite a few roads and places that I had never been before.
Got back to chch at 10pm last night after a long day, 15 hours after setting off in the morning. Slept well.
Highlights: Views of light over the hills on the first morning, Carricktown, Omarama saddle, Black Forest.

I finally got home this morning at 02:00!
We left Fairlie Saturday morning at a leisurely 10:00 and had our first beer at Cave, then at Waimate, then at Waiho forks..at this point I noticed my radiator leaking so with a bottle of water we carried on over the Awakino spoting a couple of abandoned bikes on the way, after a drama free crossing we arrived at the fantastic Omakau Hotel at 21:30..just in time for dinner, out gracious hosts Mike and Stacey cooked us the best steaks ever then we carried on socialising to the small hours.
In morning one of our group riding a KTM 950r decided he was pulling the pin for what appeared to be a blown head gasket, while I headed to Alex for Radiator stopleak after unsuccessfully trying to plug small leak by removing some finns from radiator and plastering offending area with needit but to no avail.
Stopleak didn't work so my ride was done, I limped back to Omakau where my buddy was propping up the bar and we got on it until his brother arrived from chch witha recovery trailer...what a hero.
In meantime had been speaking to Ryan and had arranged to bring the abandoned KTM from Awakino back to chch for a fella who to my amazement was back in TAuranga when I called him at 20:00.
Gutted about the radiator, the only time I put bike down was on shingle fan at Glenfalloch and that was no worse than a stationary steep off when I didn't have any terrafirra underfoot on an incline
Oh well there's always next year.
Funny thing that happened while we were killing time in Omakau was I went on to trademe via my phone and low and behold, XR650R radiators for sale..auction closes in 2hours,,$128 buy now...perfect was meant to be..have tried sourcing them in the past on were only available from Oz for about $350...sweet!

This was my first dusty and I was blown away. no injuries or offs :woohoo:. Everyone was helpful and friendly. When my riding buddy Mark (coldcomfort ) didn't want to do the awakino he jacked up for me to tag along with some other fellas. Thanks Mark. Sorry I cant remember there names KTM 450 black jacket yellow high vis strips / Honda xr 250 & Yamaha 250 I think thanks for letting me tag along. we also hooked up with Bushy and Paul both on dr 650 on Sunday.
Also hoked up with 2 ktms in kurow a 690 & a 990.
Both coldcomfort and myself had no issues with the KTM's no break downs / flat tyres they worked like clock work

Once again, huge thanks to Ryan et al.for an epic event. Always good to meet a few new faces and hear new stories. Gratitude once more to Struan for his white knight support for all and with fuel for us at Moa Creek. Thanks too to Bushy for the Dunstan gate opening (due to the lack of KTM side stand). Minimal injuries too. Only one off and still able to sit down to write this.
Still some unfinished business re the Awakino but couldn’t manage it with only one eye (the other being full of dirt) and had to miss the Omarama saddle due to a flailing chain. My riding companion was in fear of losing his head, fortunately there was little danger of him being behind me long enough. (I really wanted to change those sprockets anyway, and replace the mirrors, and fix the sidestand....). At least ONE of our KTM's was ridden in spirited fashion.
So cheers GPCustom for the company and 5 star accommodation at Alex. 2014? Maybe. It is addictive.

What an excellent but challenging weekend.
For a first timer on the DB1k the whole experience was great, only did the main route this year but myself and riding buddies (all first time DB1k'ers) were lamenting our decision not to ride the challenges and were discussing next years event even before this years dust has been washed from the bikes.
Thanks Ryan and all those who helped to make this weekend such a success.

Ha ha, the video is here infront of me, I've been reading the reports but watching some of the video right now.... until stopping for this reply.
Got over 4 hours of DB but really only going for the Awakino including the end this time and Lammermoor in sunshine instead of snow. Oh and a bit of a 'watercrossing/stuffed that up' highlight thing, those are the 3 I'm think of making.
Lost my memory card from Matts ride Friday but think I only recorded the shingle scree bit then anyway.
So it was a beaut ride this year, some good stories and tails told and hope some more to come.
Thanks to those who gave me a hand when I needed it, not too often luckily and to Ryan for your company both days, the push up the Awakino and giving us all another round of the Shoei DB1K.
I've begun to enjoy the ruts along the tracks riding the WR250 but the loose rocks still not so much.
Yep, almost had a Woodman moment with a deeper than expected little brown puddle, is how I got the dirty look while those close behind didn't. Got a bit of a rinse off in a couple of big splash fords later too.

Many thanks Struan and the guys who helped me out at start of friday ride when a wheel bearing let go, first one in 35 years I might add.
Mate and myself came up from Dunedin and then rode up the road from Geraldene to meet up with the boys from CH CH etc and about 2kms of meeting them that was it but after a quick phone call from one of you boys I was picked up and dropped of in Ashburton where I got bearings replaced and made it back to Mayfeild 5 min before first of group arrived so was able to gas up and get a beer in hand before the bikes arrived.
Missed out on entering DB (a bit slow) so after arriving at Fairlie we headed back to Geraldene and loaded up and headed for Nasby to catch up with mates for a sat and sun ride which zig zaged all around Mackenzie and Manitoto so sorry to the boys that I seen checking route sheets when they passed us going different directions etc around the country side.
Once again thanks for help and will get entry in earlier next year.
Ps have heard of a few other ktms that wheel bearings let go in weekend one at Palmerston and after a phone call to his partner she drove from ch ch to drop of a spare wheel then drove back, well done.

Well, after me and Umopom were being riding Gods over the lamammoors (fav part this year) we were coming down into the paddocks when i missed/cocked up a corner where there was no run off but rather big rocky mounds of shit and tussock. Managed to ride over one, but the front dug into another one and spat me off and i landed on my head about three metres from where the bike landed. After ascertaing that my neck wasn't broken because it went crack, I flipped up my helmet only to notice that there was an awful lot of blood around. The internal sun visor which i had in the down position had come down and sliced a chunk off the end of my nose and then sliced another chunk off the side of my nostril. Got back on and found Umopom who started playing nurse when a 4x4 came along with a real Nurse in it who patched me up with steristrips, and we recruited her husband for next years DB. Lovely couple and a big thanks whoever you are:clap:
The lady said i should ride to Dunedin to get it looked at properly and get stitched but Umopom said that I had a lot of riding to get through first so off we went. It took me about an hour to become a riding god again.
The KLR didn't sustain any damage at all that couldn't be kicked back into shape.
Got home yesterday arvo and went to A&E, and after 5 hours they put in 3 stitches, told me the scars will be permanent and sent me home.

I will second that, thanks guys for all your support during the ride, turned out a bit eventful with my electrical charging system turning to custard on Sunday afternoon. A special thank you for all the help I got from Terry at the Mobil petrol station in Omarama, where my bike finally died a death, he kindly allowed me to store my bike in his garage, charge my battery over night and phoned around to find me accommodation for the night, taking me to the back packers and picking me up in the morning. He flatly refused any payment, agreeing on me buying him a pint next time I passed through Omarama, what a great guy!

OMFG ! Wow what a spectacular weekend, as a virgin 'Duster' I am still fizzing at what an awesome weekend that was. Seldom have I ever experienced such a concentration of invigorating riding and gobsmacking scenery as I have this past weekend. Highlights include the scenery of the Glenfalloch station, combining the dual passions of mountains and motorbikes over Awakino saddle - mindblowing, the clay speedway tracks accross the Lammamores, and the staggering scenery of Bannockbuhrn lake and Black Forest, and of course putting a face to all the names known to me only through KB.
Huge ups and many thanks to Ryan and Matt and assorted helpers who pulled the weekend together and I look forward to seeing you all again next year and many in the mean time around the traps.
Looking forward also to see some vids as people finish their editing as I smashed my gopro mount on day 1 !

Have the incident on video no signs or cones to show that there was damage across the road.
Look liked a ford except the shape didn't look natural looked to square like it had been dug up. The Fulton Hogan truck with the digger on the back was parked on road not far ahead not sure why they were there though......
Given Faulties were not actually on site you may find it a bit fun to get them to accept liability. If they deny then try Ashburton District Council to find out if they were on site doing a job for them. PM me off line if necessary because I can help with contact names.
if the work involved takes less than 10 minutes then no signage is required, BUT, We only ever do this when there is good visibility both ways, if not then some sort of warning at the apex of the nearest corners like a work vehicle with its beacon going or someone standing there. ......
I've a 'little bit' of an understanding about CoPPTM and I don't agree with this. I don't agree that CoPTTM actually says this and further CoPTTM is a guideline, not a standard so there are no hard and fasts, though your local council may have provided some additional guidance to CoPTTM. In the end CoPTTM is about doing the job safely while maintaining appropriate efficiency of the network. If this means signage is required for a 2 minute job then so be it. This is something that is getting more than a little bit of attention in Chch at the moment given we have around 1000 TMP's a month to process vs pre-quake figures of around 150 TMP's a month.

Cheers R[/QUOTE]
CooneyR is quite right here, any worksite that alters the carriageway from its normal condition, whether attended or not must provide advance warning to approaching traffic. Considering over 80% of accident at worksites occur when unattended it seems inexcusable to have no advance warning of such a hazard.

Can't remember if there was cones or not, but pretty sure there were none. I ended up going off road at the corner about 20 metres because the ditch was in my braking area. The Fulton Hogan guys were just sitting in their truck eating lunch with bemused looks on their faces. It makes me wonder how many incidents they saw considering I was near the back end of fifty odd riders. Wouldn't have taken much effort for them to just run over with some cones really.

Happy with it just the way it is. Well done and thanks again. Highlight of the year!
Made it all the way back to Auckland with my son without incidents. Very thankful for the Sargent seats on both DRs. Worth their weight in gold.
See you next year (hope its on again!). Will put a few pics up in due course once they are sorted.

It was my first DB1k and I loved it, every minute!
It didn't all go smoothly....with a few navigational errors on both days.
The second day was a biggie, my riding buddy's DRZ getting a puncture, pinched tubes etc....still we were able to carry on and I got to see the sun setting from the Omarama Saddle :)
Huge thanks to Mattsdakar and Greg (who we ran into in Omakau)....without the fuel and tube we wouldn't have been able to carry on.
We also found a tool tube end cap an tool bag near the serpentine section - if it is yours let me know and I can get it returned to you.
Great to meet more adv riders too and put faces to names.
The ride home (through the Rainbow Rd) was going well until the XT packed up 30km out of St Arnaud, so after two hours on the side of the road it was back to Picton on a recovery truck.....oh well.

Replying to my own post:
I have the figures now. I did a ride out round the Waimak tonight riding lots of gravel at 90-100k, as much off road trail terrain (single track, river bed, sand and shingle) as I could find ridden at about 7/10ths, bike is 2009 450EXC with 4500Ks. Main tank went dry at 105km, reserve at 123.7km and took 8.8l to refill (spec says 9l).
So 14.06 kpl or 7.11 l/100k or 21l for the Alexandra-omarama leg or (12l in the saddle bags !) - on the thirsty side, but I was having fun not nursing it.
See you Friday!
P
Total result for the weekend:
102l / 1543km = 6.61 l/100km - Just a little better than fanging around the Waimak. The Lawence-Omarama leg did 19l in the end so the 24l jumbo tank was never under threat except for breaking the plumbing to one of the fuel taps !
:woohoo:

You were looking good when we saw ya.
Those Tool Tubes are great but need to use large Heavy Duty Zip Ties or large metal hose clamps around the whole tube to frame to keep them from flexing to destruction by the looks of it and the locking cap to keep the cap on by the sound of it.
We saw the rest of the tube in a bin at the Old Moa Creek Pub.
No, it's not mine, my Mega Tool Tube is well mounted and locked in place, I didn't trust the flexiness of the plastic lugs alone so went a bit overboard on securing it.

Oh, it was the internal sun visor? For some reason I thought the beak on the helmet had folded in. That's interesting, I've not liked those visors for other reasons, but now there is a safety concern as well.

Thanks for your heartfelt concern, but I think if Ryan changed the entire course to suit KLRs then that would be cutting off his nose to spite his face don't you think?
The puddles up the Serpentine have some sort of weird tractor beam type influence on me and my bike. Twice they drew me in while I did everything to avoid them. Actually had to get off and pull the bike backwards out of them.

"sort of weird tractor beam" are you calling your KLR a tractor?, I suppose it does look like a Fergy without a three point linkage.

Its hard to improve on what I would call a perfect few days, thanks Ryan.
Last year I used a roll chart to navigate the course. The chart worked great but takes a fair bit of concentration compared to a GPS, which I used this year. The GPS made a huge difference to the dusty butt for me, basically by not having to worry about navigation I could concentrate on riding and enjoying the scenery. Am still a shit rider but saw more of the DB this year, without constantly being focused on the sheet and speedo!! and falling off!!
Look forward to another, wherever that may be.
PS, Hope the Lady fom the Oterahau service station comes good next year if by chance we find ourselves in that neck of the woods again.

1500ks later and I did find that ratio a bit short for the road work - it just felt a bit unkind on the bike. I've changed up to 14/51 and that's much better. 115k is now just off idle and the engine sounds at peace :-)

I'm surprised that mountie and myself got through them without incident.
My chain came off at one point and made aweful noises till we got to Alex where the nice man at the bike shop fitted a new one late in the evening.
Mountie found this pointy rock that let all the air out of his rear tyre on the last crossing so we took a while up there.

Definitely Richie's missus wins that one. She was sitting on a peice of vinyl covered foam about 100mm by 150mm. 1000kms of that is tough. Also she rode for a bit of the Big Omarama Saddle (challenge section). They did the long way around (Taupo) two up on the XR as well but with footpegs on the swing arm. One seriously tough lady. Offered them a RK voucher but they turned it down!

Nah pretty sure he didn't given pre DB1k emails. Shrek mentioned Black Forest.
Actually why is Black Forest called that. Apart from a few "Oaky lookingish things" (collar and tie engineer not a botanist) around the homestead and willow and poplars around lake, I can hardly see a "black forest". Anybody know the history?

Just arrived back…
Great kick-off with the prerun, cheers Matt :niceone:
Best DB1K so far, superb meal on the Friday night, weather was great, riding conditions were fantastic, made really good times through all the challenges and finished both days under 12 hours with plenty of coffee, grub and yarn breaks. Other than 1 puncture and a couple of minor things there were no major mechanical or rider issues in our crew, had a really smooth run all in all.
Over the two days I had a great time meeting lots of new NI and SI riders and catching up with those I haven’t seen in a while. :drinknsin
Other than 5 ˝ hours of riding in the rain from Karamea to Chch to kick off, I have since had pretty much sunshine, warm and still days for basically 2 weeks of outstanding riding and fishing. Have got over 1,800 photos, various GoPro footage and GPX files to work through which will go up soon.
Cheers again Ryan, I can think of no other way of getting about 4 kilograms of dust in your face, up your nose and in your mouth and still be having a blast. See you all again on the DB1K 2014…

There is both challenge and main route on private permission required land, I know most of which is which but to be sure on this one you'll be needing more form the man, but most the public easy access stuff is on Adv Routes and Adventure Guide sites.
Serpintine Challenge is public access, Awakino is not, some of the stuff after Waimatie/before Kurow is also private but there are normal gravel roads than can be used to go around those bits to keep it semi interesting. Omarama Saddle when I first did it we needed to seek permission, now days seems like we don't. Black Forest is a toll road with locked gates and permission required.

Interestingly enough you can do half the Awakino Challenge by not doing the Awakino bit, at the Nasby end of Dansys Pass you can go in on the Mt Buster Track (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/147/mount-buster-track.php) and where that ends is at the half way mark of the Awakino Challenge where it technically turns on to the Johnstone Creek track (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/148/johnstones-creek-track.php).
I actually think the Johnstones Creek bit is cooler than the Awakino Skifield end anyway. It's wetter too.

Just heard from KTM because the bike made it out of the sounds and back to the mount with the engineering and sub frame no worse off they now want to make all their sub frames out of timber. Uderground to be the chief design engineer. Wouldnt be surprised if you dont see this sort of engineering on the moto gp bikes this year.

A majority of that area is now under DOC control (not private leasehold) ... with park/reserve status. With vehicle access to this area from near the Danseys pass summit (Nasby side) as well (Might be worth investigating that too).
As I understand from those that have anything to do with that area (DOC staff I mean) ... access is "under review". A watch this space type status.

I haven't used 'Garmin adventures' before but I wanted to paste my photos against a map and it seemed to fit the bill. It's quite neat on the computer you can get a 'fly through' on you track stopping to look at the photos you took as you go. Once published online you don't get the cool fly through any longer which is a shame but it may come as Garmin develop the web interface more. Other problem for this ride is that 'Adventures' is conceived of as a way share a whole adventure package (WPs, tracks, photos, notes, etc) but in the case of this ride the track/route files need to be protected which may well render Adventures inappropriate for sharing the experience but not the route files. Anyone used it enough to know if downloads can be disabled ?
Cheers all,
P

I tried making a few bike parts out of timber but they wooden work :wings:
Was it the subframe or just the rack that broke? If it was the subframe have a look at this: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=487154& It's easy to add a little extra steel & a lot more strength when you weld it up.
My long suffering luggage & racks were feeling the pace a bit too. I'm currently engineering the new MkII uber strong Cro-Mo rack.
Cheers
