So when's it gonna be Ryan, huh, huh? :headbang:

I'm planning my calender for next summer already seeing as I missed out on all the summer rides this year.

Bannockburn bike week has just been announced as Sunday, 27 January 2013 to Friday, 1 February 2013. I'm wondering if I can tie the 2 together.

Last 3 events have been 15/16/17 January 2010, 21/22/23 January 2011 and 20/21/22 January 2012.
I had imagined it would, or even should be 18/19/20 January 2013 in keeping that general timing...
...and that's if it doesn't become biennial (that's every second year) thus skip 2013 all together :nya:

Bloody hell - its 11 ish months away fellas!!!!

Doing a "gib off" renovation of 2/3rds of our house including new kitchen (Trademe is your friend - $500 including whiteware :woohoo:) and new bathroom in the evenings while living at the Bro-in-laws. EQ damaged has made us get our arse into gear finally and no this work is not being paid for by your taxes - just a little bit of it ;)

My bike hasn't been started since I stopped it in Fairlie after the 2012 DB1k and is currently buried under kitchen parts and other crap. Needs an oil change, rear indicator replaced (again) and some other tweaks.

I'm happy to set the date as soon as I can but need all the info I can around other events i.e. Yamaha Safari, Bannockburn bike week, whatever TimG is up too (?) . . . . Give me info and we'll get a date sorted. Probably aiming for mid Jan yet again though.

Be warned - the idea of a northern route is being discussed again.

Cheers R

As 2013 will be my first DB1000, having it one the South [in the summer??:baby:] is very appealing.

However, if it was in the North then there is a good chance that my second DB1000 will be in the South

I think the South Island for 2013 will be betterer....I just hope to be there:banana:

it was run up the top end a few years ago...

How much more challenging would this be going the other way? I reckon harder especially the hill at the end that we go down and the bouldery creek bit we go down towards that hut.

food for thought, but I'll be their no matter what the dates are.

The "Dust Devils" (a CHC bunch of adventure riders) had a trip in reverse not long after we went through this year, and upon enquiring about the climb up the ridge you mention (and which I thought would be the hardest part, too) the reply was that it was no bother at all. I'm surprised, but pleased. No comment about the bouldery creek, but they all got through OK on a variety of bikes and experience..

Well I'm up for anything this round.
Will be back to leaving the Transalp at home for the DB1k's to come, and with the trade of the DR650 for a much lighter and much better suspended WR250R I hope to enjoy all the places I used to say out loud "I'd prefer to be on the CRF in here".
Something like that anyway.

Traded the CRF too.

I really need to get my bike sorted for the db1k, I've had my WR250R for almost a year now.

Had great plans to turn it into an adventure bike but it's spent most of this year as a farm hack with the odd trail ride.

Just noticed this http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=740689&page=14 First ever WR250R to do this I think?

Work is really getting in the way of life. I though last year was bad but I hadn't met 2012 at that time. I'm currently ensconced in a hotel in Wellington looking at a night of work (as per most evenings) - maybe I should just get the front page of the DB site sorted.

Great, now that the Date and Place is final, the accomadation is booked and paid for in Failie and Alexander, and we know the route is the same as 2012, the only question I have and this might not nessesarily be directed at cooneyr, is the following:
Is there another organised ride from Christchurch to Fairlie like there was in 2012? and who was it that organised it?

Guilty as charged
I'm happy to again organise a Christchurch to Fairlie route for the Friday as per last year.
Closer to the time I'll start another thread rather than hijack the DBK1 one.
It will most likely involve meeting around 0900 north west Christchurch and doing similar if not the same route to Fairlie as per 2012
Will have to do some work on logistics as last year keeping 50 odd riders accounted for was a bit like herding cats!
Look forward to catching u all up then

Hi Al - great to hear from you - good friendships forged on the DB eh?

Your neck of the woods - Forgotten World is among my favourites - keep in touch - who knows we may stitch something together for us 'senior' ADV riders

Yeh I read Phil's report last night - not sure I have the skill / gonads for some of the more challenging sections - eg where the navigation became suspect in Oregon - still musing on it and counting the cost

Stay in touch - send me a PM if you like see if we can 'hook up' over summer - Cheers Aslan aka Stephen O (old fart)

YEP! I agree Padme.
If there is one thing that could be improved upon, its the finish.
It all seems to go a bit flat.
It,d be good to have a place to socialize ,debrief,& have a feed /drink.

Maybe a bit of a survey would be in order?

Perhaps its not happening now as those hero,s:clap: who do the organiseing ,live handy,& just want to get home?

It may be the "far & away" boys that should organise something.

I agree, why not all the "Far and Away" boys meet back at the Gladstone pub in Fairlie, as this is where the ride ends and I know my crew is all spending the night in Fairlie at the Top10, just a suggestion.

Good point though, last year after my tyre drama i didnt get back to the Gladstone till just after 8.
The publican told me that the kitchen was closed.:(
Although about half an hour later he did bring me out a plate of fish N chips :niceone:, which was greatly appreciated as there was no other place open in fairlie on a sunday night ( not even the servo ).

I guess if enough people commit to eating there on the sunday night we could ask the publican to keep the kitchen open later.

Ryan is half way through organizing an alternative meet and greet place that will have the option of a good feed for the Friday night. I believe this will be followed by a place where everyone can catch up at the end of day 2, have some beers, spin a few yarns about the 2 days of riding and listen to Kenny's stories of how he only fell off 18 times this year!! :bleh:

It is a bit of an anticlimax finishing up a brilliant ride only to roll into a town where nothing is open and you can't even buy a beer. I know most riders will be knackered but swinging back a beer and yarning with other riders is a great way to wind up the ride, hopefully we can convince a local place to stay open for us

My recommendation is for the small pizza place if we can get the guy to stay open. They do a grouse gourmet pizza and are licensed. A group of us found this place by chance on the way back from the Diggers Ride (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/208/diggers-ride.php).

I was thinking of the Old Library Cafe Pizza place too, I see it's currently closed for renovation but surely that won't take too long.
One little problem is some people start getting back at 4 or 5pm and some are still arriving back approaching midnight.
I'd definitely like to have a end of event gathering.

I was wondering if there was a local community group like volunteer fire brigade/school that could do bit of a bbq with slads & beers as a fundraiser? obviously there are probs with those arriving late however if they had a close off at say 9.30 for cooking or left it so those arriving late could cook themselves a few snarlers.
Just throwing theings aroiund here. i know I was pretty buggered at the end of last years & just really wanted to hit the sack.

As it is getting alarmingly closer I want to hear your guys thoughts on the koha for Ryan. I'm happy to collect it as my gambling addiction is just about under control now.

The was a great response from the regulars here that appreciate the hard yards Ryan does for the pleasure of being able to ride with us.

The nominal amount most paid last year was $40. You have to agree that is fricking cheap for a well organised event. (apart from the weather - Ryan get your arse into gear & fix that this year)
Some that have done safaris or in a comfortable financial position donated larger amounts over $100 which was very generous of them.

I am proposing an amount of $60 per rider for the event. That is $30 a day - less than $3 an hour of riding time/ one tank full per day/ 3 flat whites & scones/ bank fees for one month/ half a handjob - you get the picture.

What do you guys think of this? I was also going to do the collecting on the Friday evening at the pub briefing for ease of payment as everyone can bring cash with them from their original destination & not have to worry about internet banking/ ATM machines etc. Also there may be a few tagalongs that may not be part of the KB community who may need a headsup to bring some cash before departing.

Of course this is a KOHA so if you are in the young kids/ big mortgage/ low cashflow scenario & running on the smell of an oily rag please don't feel compelled to donate or let this cost be the financial straw on your camels back - we are all here to escape reality for a few days, ride motorbikes & enjoy the company of other smelly scruffy maniacs.

Get back to me with your thoughts. You can pm me if you don't feel comfortable going public:niceone:

Think the biggest distance last year between garages was Lawerance to Omarama at 290km.
Have a look at the fuel stop chart .pdf from last year to get an idea of fuel stop options and distance between.... click here to view (http://db1k.com/rider-downloads/db1k-2013-fuel-stops.pdf)

Lots of people ride there, some trailer, I've done it both ways. Some guys riding to the start from or through Christchurch do an extra ADV ride from Christchurch on the Friday on the way there.
Good thing about the actual DB1k is since it finishes where it starts you can trailer there no worries and the Pub has so far been happy to have stuff left there while we are riding, they are usually booked out for the Friday and some people stay again Sunday.
I'm not sure what I'll do this time, it is really really nice to drive home after it's over but if I van down I will not be able to do the Friday adventure as well.

Hi Chris. Good to see you going off road finally. I am going again this year. Happy to hang out with the locals. Haven't got anything booked for Alex yet so if you or any others are looking at a bulk deal count me in. As for luggage, got fed up with stuff falling off the KTM and ordered a Giant Loop roll from Aussie.( they are not cheap tho so it will have to be my Xmas present). Re GPS- I prefer the roll chart. Got me thinking. Started the event in 2007 and I've started every year since - thats 6 starts so far. Failed to finish in 07 (pace was too slow), 09 (recovered two broken down bikes), 10 (Small bore challenge that turned into a small bore vs small bore tow). Also had to skip the Awakino challange in 2010 due to bike issues.

So from 6 starts so far, I've finished 3 and not taken my preferred route on one. Not good!

I have always run knobs front and rear T63,eo9,mt21, all good but one dusty = 1 rear tyre for me. This year just got a new mt21 front and gonna run something smoother on the back, probarbly Shinko 244. Grip is not rarely an issue on the dusty but I do like the stopping ability on gravel of a knob compared to a smooth tyre.

E07 rear and something knobblish in front (D606/MT21 etc) would be perfect.

Apart from the snow, 705's were fine last time.

For the record, I would also like to note that plenty of people running knobs fell off in the snow. No-one running 705's front and rear did :shifty:

Your XR650 isn't exactly a hugely heavy bike either.

The problem with the XR is the power delivery. Lacking in bottom end smoothness and a real kick in mid range and up top does not engender itself to the more roady oriented tyres...

Knobs and steering with the throttle - yes :scooter:

E07 rear, TKC80 front, got 6000K out of them, E07 was 1/2 to 2/3 worn and the TKC80 was about the same, the E07 seem to last well and hang on well with reasonable road manors and reasonable off road, being a chevron pattern they dont do side hill that well or step down hill in mud but in a straight line forward they clear well.

The TKC is a softer compound and a good all round jack of all trades type tyre but master of nothing.

Ryan has a twisted sense of humour, before each DB1K event he litters the challenge section with nails and broken glass. He then stands idly by with a video camera in hand to capture the chaos he has caused, his evil laughter fills the Awakino Valley and can be heard from many miles away

The Awakino challenge section is very rocky and has a reputation for lots of punctures, not just the rocky sections, the random rocks under tussock and around blind corners, ain't that right junkmanjoe?

Three dustys and 2 punctures so far. One rear and one slow leak in the front which became a fast leak towards the end of day two. Managed to get to Fairle by stopping and pumping then riding for about 8ks before things got wobbly again. Then rinse and repeat.

Yes to h/d tubes.

Seems to be quite a few punctures on the dusty or is that down to the sheer volume of bikes ? The terrain ?

Are some tyres better at resisting punctures over others, types of tread patterns ? Do any of ya's run heavy duty tubes ?

jmj got snake bite after he hit a rock or pot hole to long a go to remember  but HD tubes yes as they do take a lot more, I run tubbless saves alot of hassel but I do carry tubes just in case it realy turns to shyte

Well you need boxing gloves, a base ball bat, 2 litres of KY, alot of swearing and an Iwi liaison Officer to change an E07, it felt like I was trying to fit a 17" tyre on and 18" rim.

On the up side you can run them down to about 5psi and they wont roll of the rim.

Down side is with not much air in they sink in water so no good on a KLR650 in water holes  :killingme :nya:

:

Maybe it's a 17" rim thing? I've never had too many issues putting any of those on the KTM.

After careful consideration of all the factors influencing wear, traction, handling, puncture resistance, KY jelly & baseball bats I have decided that, for the DB1K I will run tyres that are round & black. ;)

Shoei and RK Racing Chain Sponsorship

In one of the most significant moves since the DB1k creation, this year Shoei and RK Racing Chain have sponsored the event. This sponsorship has greatly assisted with keeping the event free of entry fees, so a say a special thank you to these sponsors. If you need something that they offer it'd be a nice gesture to help them since they have helped us.

A $150 RK 520EXW lasted 14,000km on the DR...

The DR is now at 13,000km on a Torpedo7 $80 EK 520X and the TT is wearing a $115 DID 520V.

I found the cheap RK's either stretched or bound up really quickly. The mid-range ones are much better.

good question Al

I initated the koha really just to let us show our appreciation of the hard work Ryan has done setting up this ride. I just stepped up to organise it as I felt people woud want to help Ryan cover costs etc & give him a bit of tyre money. I'm not sure wht the sponsorship deal involves & not sure it's mine or anyone elses business - no offense inferred to you Al or anyone else.

I am not involved in any way with the organisation of the ride but do participate in it.

I'm not sure what happens from here with regards to the koha. Ryan did post that he would include a donation amount in the entry form making me redundant. (I really needed the money this year for a cool pyramid selling scheme I am secretly trying to set up)

Ryan send me a PM if you wish & let me know if the sponsorship deal covers your costs & leaves a bit for tyre money, as I woud be happy to collect it & pass it on again.

The only concern I have & have had for the last couple of years is the running of an event (with with sponsorship money now must fall under that category) involving riding motorcycles on public roads for 24hrs. I reckon that should be given some consideration.

Edit - just read the updated website page & not sure if anything I said is relevant anyway.

Your work with the koha was much appreciated Padders. ADVGD has already set up a way of making an optional donation if you want too as part of the registration process. Couple of final things to do and registration page should be sorted.

Re public roads and event, I've done a bit of homework and the short story is that I don't charge an entry fee because of liability reasons. Donations and the sponsorship go a long way to helping cover costs to organise and run the ride.

They are indeed last times dates, this year it's Friday 18th, Saturday 19th. It's the Accommodation page (http://www.db1k.com/2013/accommodation.php) only, other pages are correct I think.

so now I'm a week late with these dates

Thats what happen when cheeky buggers try and force something on the poor innocent organisers.

I think that post of Padders was a piss take at the time.

Cheers R

P.S. I'll fix the accommodation page now.

P.S.S Stop registering so fast fella's I can't keep up! - seems I've been beaten to the punch

Transalper was right, the dates were correct on all pages throughout the site, however, two of the date references on the accommodation page were a day out as these were from January 2012. The good news is that this should hopefully not have caused any issues for those booking accommodation as Friday the 18th was always displayed correctly and you'd only be booking for the following Saturday night so hopefully logic would have led to you booking for Saturday the 19th.

But as for you Keith, this is not the cause of your problem, you booked your dates based on Padmie's post  Why did you do that mate? Did someone spike your heroin with cocaine? :p Don't trust that mad bugger, half the things that come out of his mouth belong on a patient evaluation sheet from a psychiatric hospital!

Look what you've caused Craig  I'm sure Keith will sort you out good and proper for this one!

Nice job on the website. It's been a quiet ADV year for me, but I'm looking forward to catching up with a few of you on the 18th.

Errrr... Quick question... How do you order the right sized shirt ? I'd be pretty gutted if I turned up and got a tiny little itty bitty shirt
Not that I'll need one or anything

With the dropdown box labeled 'size' that appears once you have selected yes you want a tee in the DB1K T-Shirts option box.

I use 2 of these http://www.homeofpoi.com/shop/productDetails/Single-1L-Plastic-Fuel-Bottle for my extra km requirements. They fit nicely into my moose racing pack, mounted on my pannier racks.
Just a bit of pain in the neck (geddit!!!) when filling due to the small bottle neck/cap.

Very similar to these I got from a camping store: 272904

Ta, I've kept the bike as it seemed I would have to give it away and there is no way I'm doing that... the downside is running two registered bikes is crucifying the bank balance.
