Now that I am fairly well munted on Spanish red wine, Monteiths and the dregs of some Famous Grouse I am tempted to DRIVE down to New World and ask for a refund. Yes, they are closed etc etc etc, but there is an important principle involved here.

Probably.

Just saw a couple of boxes of 20 assorted beers and cider for $24. Bargain? I bought one. Got it home and opened the box with a sigh of disappointment considering the beers they have in store.

Six bottles of DB
Five bottles of Asahi
Three bottles of Carlsberg
One can of Kilkenny
Five bottles of DB Export
And a partridge in a pear tree

The first bottle I pulled out was sticky like it had been in a box that was dropped, so I got them all out one by one to give them a wipe. Oh, that DB Export looks a funny colour I thought to myself. DB Export fucking citrus. At 2% I wouldn't even call it beer. The only saving grace is there was no Speights in there but fuck me, hardly going to be a magical mystery tour is it. Luckily I grabbed a couple of double hopped IPA's that were on special at the same time. The wife can have the girly drinks.

Bugger. My last one had some fucking 'light ice' in it, that shit is terrible.

Azkle's on the money, sink em in one.

To wit, now drinking a Garage Project 'Hapi Days'. Fark me this is nice. (http://garageproject.co.nz/collections/beers)

Petes Shed Sav. Turns out it is Peter Yealand (SP?) export Sav - not usually available in NZ but they were over supplied and a local purchased bulk and running them out cheap ($9.99) I took a punt a few weeks ago on a bottle.

I like my Sav's and rate this one highly - in fact I went back and purchased a half dozen more............

Fuckers got me. Good marketing really :-)

Also as a side note - more fuckers if they export the better stuff out of NZ.

All the way from te aro st garage project in wellingtown (must be drewpys mates)

overhopped (srsly EVERYONE you cant hide bad beer behind more fucken hops. )
Citrus notes. Clean, medium finish.
"pilsner malt, saaz hops, czech yeast"
4.8%, $4/can. Wouldnt buy again unless there was heaps and it was cheap.

this czech yeast is another one thats cropping up a bit. Not sure yet how it affects the flavour, seems to always be hoppy beers it's in so maybe that's what it's suited to.

ive reeeeeeeeelly been enjoying the monteiths range. Even their fruitys, summer ale and radler (less so the radler, but theres a time and a place) other than that, their bohemian pils (red?) is a solid beer and 5%. and original ale. I like my abvs up, and i think the ale is a 4.2, but nice anyway.

Fuck. There's a bottle of that crap in there. I also have some cream in the fridge...

There was a bottle of Jim Beam in the haul from waaaaaay back when I had a bit more hair.
It really is crap. Far too sweet.
The bottle went down the drain. Yuck!
Also the same occured with the half bottle of Tequila. (it was 1980's vintage. Tasted shit back then as I remember.)

"1800" if you want a tequila that doesnt taste like tequila but very much is. Comes in 3 (4?) flavours. Gold/morange/amber or whatever the fuck is the truest in spirit (pun intended) silver is cleaner but old wives will warn you off clear spirit.

Damn right it is....the missus & I travelled through the former communist states shortly after the Ruskis fucked off. Slivovitz & Borovichka were the liquid versions of the Babel fish.....& it was impossible to say no to the locals. I reckon I was drunk for weeks at a time.
Everyone had a svetchka plum tree growing in the courtyard & all took pride in making grade A shit.
Granny would toddle out with cheese, pork fat & bread & sit down with the men folk & then, nek minit......

A few weeks back I met a young couple from the Czech republic who were WWOOFing at a mates & I waxed lyrical on the awesumness of Slivovitz....the young fella got up & disappeared for a few minutes ,returning with a small bottle of his grand parents slivovitz & offered me a small glass of it. I was well chuffed & Oh man was it smooth....

For me a little lacking in palate, tinny sort of taste as if been aged in the can, a watery draught that quenches the thirst, a small note of hops in a glass of water. Have tasted worse that were undrinkable, but still a low score on this one.

moa lager.

tis an interesting one. big, any way you drink it, and while it can be drunk english, I much prefer it out the fridge.
much meaty/maltier warm, but if you pour it cold and savour it, you reach a point in the middle when it's quite treacle-ey.

nomnom, anyway.

Stout from our local brewer 'Ferris Rd'.
He's opened a brewery bar in town in the last two or three months...he's my new best friend.

Did a tour of the local brewery in Rarotonga when we were there recently. When I say 'tour', we actually stood in one of the two rooms that made up the brewery while the boss man did his presentation. Well worth it too (and the samples were generous).

Very interesting hearing the story of how they work in an unfriendly environment for craft beer. He told a story about how they got some expensive piece of German made switchgear ($10,000?) when they first set up but that because of the humidity it corroded to to the point of being useless within a year. They went to a local plumber and he fixed them up with a switch which was made from a soccer ball with valves sitting in a container. When the pressure grew big enough the ball expanded and physically tripped a switch which caused something to happen and the pressure in the ball to drop. When it got to a low pressure point it tripped another switch and started inflating the ball again. The system is still working 9 years later. That's an approximation of the story anyway. As I said, the samples were generous so possibly my recollection of the story may not be perfect.

I'd noticed that you had posted to this thread at 9.00AM and I wondered what the Hell you were doing drinking at that hour, so being nosy and having time...

Brian, loved your comment about the fish. Was reading a book by Bettina Selby once, she writes about cycle touring: in Palestine, up the Nile, whatever.
She also wrote a book about a cycle tour of Britain; on the West coast of England near the border with Scotland she saw people catching salmon in what is rated to be the most polluted water around Britain. She asked the fishermen why they were taking fish from those waters,
"Oh it's alright, we export these to France."

It was 9pm when the drinking was taking place, I don't drink as a rule but yesterday I had three Waikato stubbies/one Port (not as much in the bottle as I thought, need to replace) and two Baileys.
Apparently pubs/clubs/bars cannot advertise beer by the pint (Fair Go last night) but it's 3 quarts for $20 at our local on a Wednesday. Not that could drink that much at a sitting.

quinine (asides from being good for you) is also uv reactive. shine a blacklight on the bottle, or if you look through it at the right angle to the sun you'll see it glow blue.
neat party trick
