rinse the glass with bitters, add some ice, now I think it is ginger ale as a mixer but could by lemonade. You can find it on the webs whilst I am trying to remembers Mum's favourite method. Boy she could annoyed when the bar got it wrong, usually the bitters they stuffed up. But wtf is a 10 year old doing in a pub in the first place you may ask :bleh:

Said bottle of Pims sits unopened. The label says mix with lemonade, 7-Up or ginger ale, ice and a slice of lemon, orange or cucumber. That's very nearly a complete meal, I just need to add bacon for full nutritional value.

The whisky was a Gordon & MacPhail special. Thoroughly recommend people drop in to Meenans if passing through Dunedin for an excellent selection of hard to find whisky. Salivate here. (http://www.meenans.co.nz/ABS/ImageGrid.aspx)

that pommie pig swill?? and here i was thinking you might not have been such a bad guy...I got grief last night for drinking the 'ken, by some craft beer drinkers. It was their opinion that nothing mass produced can be any good.

I was astounded at this one woman, who was looking down her nose at me for not wanting to pay $7 for a beer I likely wouldn't like at the pub.

give it a crack. Last season was ale season and i pulled off some very drinkable shit. Unfortunately ive since drunk all the proof.
You need to try an older brewer, who will actually condition the beer for months or years. Not the guy with a bucket and 10$ coopers cans who will drink it before the month is done...
There are some good english dry lagers to be had, a black rock can might get you in the mood...use dextrose for extra dry.

'Craft beer' fags!
Perhaps it is an immigrant thing. One of the few things I miss about England are the pubs - the history, the character and the beer. Speights, DB, Tui etc are all much of a muchness. Served ice cold because we live in the super hot South Pacific I guess. But then there is good beer here. Occasionally you come across a pub that serves it well, hand pulled at the correct temperature. It might not be to everyones taste but that is what I grew up on. Is that craft beer? I don't know, I just call it proper beer.

And tonight Matthew, I have a couple of bottles of Mike's Taranaki Pale Ale to try out while watching the racing.

ice? You heathen!

Really?

Cask strength or barrel proof whiskies (usually those over 50% abv) can usually benefit from the addition of a splash of cool water or an ice cube or two. By adding a splash of water, flavors and aromas that might be missed in such a high proof whiskey begin to emerge

a dash of water does really bring out the flavours in a good whisky, ice providing you don't suck on it or let it melt too much does the same. But like you said he mos well use what is plentiful.

no it doesnt. Ice cools it and locks up the warmer notes, it minimises the volatile aromas.
While cool water may help pin down some of the soluble ether and thus change the flavour profile, ice should be avoided like a motherfucker.

I use 60% ABV neutral spirit, or even up to 80%ABV if it's a potent herb. I then grind up the herbs, and put it into a bottle and fill with spirit until there's just enough spirit to cover all the herbs. Then leave for a month, shaking the bottle twice the week. Filter off the herbs, and you're done!

It's managed to kick a few asses before, mine included.

I still managed to save the bike without doing any damage as the mirrors and fairings didn't touch the ground, I jumped in underneath so it was an epic save and didn't get hurt in the process since it's a light bike. no, it's just fermented sugar. methanol is a byproduct of distillation.

kilju is ~20%, about the highest achievable with yeast (it dies in an alcoholic environment, go figure)

if you distill kilju you get pontikka, which will make you go blind if not done properly, same as any home-distilled shit.

Yes, I thought of a good one but it involved epilepsy, Parkinsons, 240 volts, a bacon sandwich and a mosque. Would offend a few.

The good news is my wife doesn't like the beer. Not sure whether it is the hops or the 9% alcohol but at least I know she won't crack open a bottle when thirsty now.

Bought a 6pack of the Harrington's to see what they're like.

Classy red, quite nice but a bit too hoppy for a Best methought.
Pig and whisle mild dark, a very smooth dark (don't drink a lot of dark but trying to get used to em). An ideal beer to nurse over a couple hours.
East indies lager, I supped with our roast chook, quite crisp/dry, very easy drinking, could see these getting one into trouble given a sufficient supply.

Still to try the other 3 out of the box...

Supermarket's also been doing some 'dropsie boxes' lately - basically when they break stuff they set aside the good ones and make up a box of randoms every so often. We're now buying em on sight cos they're great value and great for the variety.
Crown - shit
Mac's pale ale - nobbad (I still think their Sassy Red is a top shelf Best, especially on tap)
Moa pale ale - fuckin' amazing.

Just saw a couple of boxes of 20 assorted beers and cider for $24. Bargain? I bought one. Got it home and opened the box with a sigh of disappointment considering the beers they have in store.

Six bottles of DB
Five bottles of Asahi
Three bottles of Carlsberg
One can of Kilkenny
Five bottles of DB Export
And a partridge in a pear tree

The first bottle I pulled out was sticky like it had been in a box that was dropped, so I got them all out one by one to give them a wipe. Oh, that DB Export looks a funny colour I thought to myself. DB Export fucking citrus. At 2% I wouldn't even call it beer. The only saving grace is there was no Speights in there but fuck me, hardly going to be a magical mystery tour is it. Luckily I grabbed a couple of double hopped IPA's that were on special at the same time. The wife can have the girly drinks.
