Keruru Midnight Spirit - barrel aged imperial stout. Aged 10 months in American oak bourbon barrels that had previously held NZ Whisky Co. single malt for more than 20 years. Lawdy it was nice, pure black, nice kick (12%) a bit pricey at $30 / 500ml but it was a one-off (#835 or a total bottling of 1344)

Warning: Double Bastard Ale is not to be wasted on the
tentative or weak. Only the Worthy are invited, and then only at
your own risk. If you have even a modicum of hesitation, DO
NOT buy this bottle. Instead, leave it for a Worthy soul who has
already matriculated to the sublime ecstasy of what those in
the know refer to as "Liquid Arrogance."
This is one lacerative muther of an ale. It is unequivocally
certain that your feeble palate is grossly inadequate and thus
undeserving of this liquid glory...and those around you would
have little desire to listen to your resultant whimpering. Instead,
you slack-jawed gaping gobemouche, slink away to that
pedestrian product that lures agog the great unwashed with the
shiny happy imagery of its silly broadcast propaganda. You
know, the one that offers no challenge, yet works very, very
hard to imbue the foolhardy with the absurd notion that they
are exercising "independent" thought, or attempts to convey the
perception it is in some way "authentic" or "original." It’s that
one that makes you feel safe and delectates you into basking in
the warm, fuzzy, and befuddled glow of your own nescience.
Why so many allow themselves to be led by the nose lacks
plausible explanation. Perhaps you have been so lulled by the
siren song of ignorance that you don’t even notice your white-
knuckle grip on it. You feel bold and unique, but alas are
nothing but sheep, willingly being herded to and fro. If you think
you are being piqued in this text, it is nothing when compared
to the insults we are all asked to swallow streaming forth from
our televisions and computers. Truth be told, you are being
coddled into believing you are special or unique by ethically
challenged “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain”
marketers who layer (upon layer) imagined attributes
specifically engineered to lead you by the nose. Should you
decide to abdicate your ability to make decisions for yourself,
then you are perhaps deserving of the pabulum they serve.
Double Bastard Ale calls out the garrulous caitiffs who
perpetrate the aforementioned atrocities and demands
retribution for their outrageously conniving, intentionally
misleading, blatantly masturbatory and fallacious ad
campaigns. We demand the unmitigated, transparent truth. We
demand forthright honesty. We want justice! Call ‘em out and
line ‘em up against the wall...NOW.

For some reason the idea of vodka made from milk offends my idea of the natural order. I understand the alcohol in all of our RTDs is made from milk so...
Limoncello can be great but the local one you can buy is crap. My own home made was better, but the genuine Italian one I had in the Italian restaurant in Turangi was magic.

This is quite true. Lactose does not ferment easily. But evidently, there is one yeast that will do the trick (kluyveromyces marxianus)...(Whatever that is).

Wort is sugar, it's the sweet extract of malt. Some people add other sugar too, to save buying or extracting more malt.
So whatever it still makes alcohol.

Ok I'll ask for one of those next time, now that ive recovered the power of speech...
And possibly after a couple of beers. For courage.
In particular I'd like to recommend you all to Macs Interstate. I was given a 6pack and was a bit dubious but it's actually very good. They've really spent serious money on hops and it's well presented at the front, although with only medium bitterness and light malt to back it up, making it a good session APA.
I bought more as an experiment and am now testing it alongside Epic Pale Ale, my usual 'control'
Stay tuned...

* soda water in another glass, not in the coffee... before someone asks

I might just have to test that out...
But at present I am drinking a glass of Domain Road Dry Riesling, 2015 vintage. It's still as hard as nails and tastes like rusty steel. Guess it needs another couple of years in the bottle...or maybe the drain

yeah depending on what comes through...
if it's neutral spirit then bottle at 30-40%. if it's flavourful then leave it undiluted until you drink it and shoot for 15-20% in the glass.
don't forget to discard heads (everything below 78°C). tails too, though they won't kill you, just taste like shit.
also when i'm decanting i do several smaller cuts (catch approx 10-15% of the volume each), then blend them to taste... also gives you a chance to learn what distillates/flavours come off at what part of the brew...
i also have a genius edition of Trivial pursuit, about 4 boxes worth, if you wantem.

oh. and run a recirc pump and chiller, or use it to fill your bath or something... running water down the drain is a freakn waste.

I keep the first 125ml for cleaning purposes and never persist into the tail end. It's pretty cheap to produce so I figure no advantage in screwing the very last dregs out of the pot.
I've been running this still for 20 years and am not dead yet. Must be missing something...
I'd really like one of the copper stills but given that I am not supposed to drink ANY alcohol, I figure I oughtn't push it.
The recirc and chiller is a very good idea Akzle. Today the incoming water temp is 24C. I get better results in the winter when incoming water is much colder.

Yes it is a reflux still. I fill the column right up, usually with rashid rings (I think that's what they are). Originally it only had part packing. Filling it up shoves the strength way higher.
I once left a batch at 60%. Just to test it out y'know - purely in the interests of science . Trouble was every time I had a second shot I fell over and went to sleep. 40 - 45% seems to be plenty.

I came across the Little Creatures brand in Wellington a few weeks back. Tried all three variants they had, but more research is needed.
On checking, the small print on my 'recent' supermarket beer purchases indicate some surprising origins. The previous dozen of Peroni was made in South Australia which was a minor disappointment, but on checking the latest dozen I see that it was indeed made in Italy. The Asahi Dry was made in Beijing, not Japan. The last Estralla Damm I bought was made in Malta instead of Spain. The Mexican Sol was made in the Netherlands.
I was recenty assured somewhat vehemently that Tiger is still made in Singapore but the box I looked at had originated in Auckland.
Long as it tastes OK I guess?

the glenlivet founders reserve.
(that would be single malt scotch for the unenlightened)
this is what they've replaced their 12y/o with. it's been slammed in online reviews as a poor substitute. but since i don't normally drink their 12y/o I can't rightly say.
...I CAN rightly say that it doesn't hold a candle to their 18y/o.
it is however a reasonably priced drinker. which is fairly high praise since i don't normally drink scotch, and am neither hoity nor toity enough to rank single malts above blends.

The Glenlivet 12 is much better than the replacement Founders but only my opinion (matches the critics), still got 1 and 1/2 bottles left original guess once its gone, its gone so sparingly filtering its oaky smoothness through my veins.
My opt for something similarly nice to Glenlivet 12 is The Antiquary 12- Black, or 12YO Isla Mist, both being blends. For a single malt on par try Glen Elgin 12YO.

Cottage Delights "Old Farts". Brewed by Staffordshire brewery. "A Premium Dark Ruby Beer."
After a coupla months of high hopped craft beers it was a little bland. But it was way better once it warmed up. Most of them Pom beers are best not too cold I reckon. But even by English beer I thought it a little lacking.

I do like the Antiquary. On a side note, I took the family around my old stomping grounds last year and ended up at the Dufftown Highland Games. They had a special blend for the games from 12 local distilleries. Very nice, and a real shame I had to drive later.
Anyway, got given a bottle of 15yo Linkwood last week. Got to say I had not heard of it before. And fuck it all, on Sunday I had to start six months of no alcohol due to kicking a cat or something. Roll on Bonfire night and cracking it open.
