If you REALLY want to, My wife can take the CRV down and carry fuel and some bags. She has expressed her interest.

Ooo yeay can I throw in the limoncello?

Hmm doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose of a bike trip tho? I don't know what the traditions/protocols are about cars on bike trips??

It is a case of means must really. I broke my ankle (walking) and spent over 5 months either on crutches or in a moon boot and unable to ride or drive. I think there may have been 2 L's Angel rides out that I went in a car, or maybe even more due to "other" real life requirements.

I used to get a bit pissed at being the place for people to store their gear. Though was really handy to do the grocery/drinks run on arrival to be fair.

If someone wants to come along and his/her partner also wants to join in, but not on a bike, then I say all good, but be prepared to go grog shopping on arrival

Excuse me, I have to go and complain to the council about my neighbours poxy, barking, fecking dogs!

OMG! I can see this trip really shaping up. Maakz, as usual you eloquence has made my day, Juniper, you appear to be as blonde as I can be at times. Good shit!

What?!? Petrol smells gooooood lol.
Hehehe

I'm blaming the years of bleach I used to use when I had purple hair. I don't go blond though I go OMG FREAKING ORANGE.

A good idea, we have had a ''support vehicle'' on a few of our away rides, just limit it a maximum of one item per bike. What I noticed on the first Cape ride (where we had the Holden with three incapacitated riders) was that most just dumped their stuff in the boot and what was left of the back seat...
But yeah the idea gets my vote.

What the hell excess would you need to bring?? Nickers, socks and a pair of jeans go in back pack. Gear goes on body and gloves go in helmet which goes on handle bars or next to bed.

For me the limoncello is a novelty not a necessity.

Full first aid kit is my only problem. And you really only need 1 per group. Which should be with the traveling groups and not in a car at the other end.

limoncello however is a necessity.

When you get 24-25 people on a ride, that equals at least 24-25 packs/bags which is a lot when they are loaded into a car boot
There can be sleeping bags/tents/pillows etc...there were even sex toys on one ride, not one of ours, but word does gets out about such things Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz :shifty:
Over night rides not so bad but a three day'er is different. We tend to take a bit more.

My backpack for the new plymouth trip weighed 5kg. That included sleeping bag, tarps, pegs and string. This trip i'll see if I can manage with just hauling the wet weather gear and undies (wear good woolen socks, they can last a couple days).

Sleep naked, it attracts natural bed warmers (males) who will keep you warmer than pjs could. I just booked a bed and it looks like you would be doing them a favour if you shared a bed with someone else to save beds lol. As for onesies, get one without a tail or wings to keep it compact :p

I WANT ONE WITH A TAIL!!!!!

But I sleep on my side so I'd need 2. Can I get bed warmers without the sticky things? It allows for more sleeping. I'm not packing a pillow so can I have a couple of cushions to go with that?

Lol I sleep in more layers than I wear riding!!

Yip Doogle got a free feed at Kawhia for being first in the water, at best, you may find a water tank at The Ohura Prison, though it may hold a few dead things ...

What invariably happens on these rides is, at every stop I get asked by some ‘’How far till the next fuel stop’’?

Yehp. That wasn't becuase I was running out of gas, just wanted to know if I could make it to the next stop without having to push.

What I noticed on the first Cape ride (where we had the Holden with three incapacitated riders) was that most just dumped their stuff in the boot and what was left of the back seat...

Thats funny. I recall being asked several times at several stops if I wanted to put my bag into the car. It was fine but I dunno, you fellas must really not have trusted by bag attaching skills much by then. The two bungie cords, a net, and a tie down were going to hold it just fine.

.......something you're not telling us? :corn:
Theres a reason I typically book doubles ok? I just wasn't expecting . . . . . . . Hayden. (That trip was enough thank you sir)

Got word last night that Graeme and Irene are leaving the San Marino at the end of July. First thought was '' fuck! what now for the cape trip''?
No panic, the new managers will get a call from me during August but it will certainly mean the we will have to feed ourselves..unless Mark Waters can spark up a BBQ

There are two Fish and Chip shops close by so no real biggie where tea is concerned. Breakfast may need to be in Pukenui on the Saturday and Kerikeri on the Sunday.
What we have done on two other occasions is get $10 off everyone for tea... 24 people = $240
At the Naki (21 people) we made with about $12 left over (Pizzas) and Taupo the previous year, we had about the same amount left over after feeding tea (Pizzas) and breakfast bacon/eggs/toast/beans for 24 people.

Just thinking out loud here really.

A friend of ours used to take a collapsable fish smoker on his kayak*. Surely you could fit a small BBQ. We'll just have tp take turns.

Actually, betweem You, Maha and myself we could probably carry three.

*Among other things - it sometimes took four people to carry the boat to the water.

It seems a bit ghost town in part. I have seen a youtube clip about an odd couple who moved there and own (well hoard) old shit in what use to be a the local garage.
Still, really looking forward to going there, visiting places/areas I have never been to before is almost like a 'have too' and do it with others on bikes makes it all the better.

LankyBastard (Ash) is an awesome group leader, a good constant speed on or just above legal, he knows how to keep a group together, having riders of similar mind-set helps. We (the slower group) generally turn up 5-7 minutes after them. You can tag on with us if you like Murray? another experienced rider mid pack wouldn't go a miss, and ikiebike might like the scenic tour ;)

+1 for saddle bags. I always have mine on the bike with my rain gear inside. My tank back has my everyday stuff, like sunglasses, money, tire gauge etc. So I look everyday like I'm going touring when I'm actually just heading to work :D Very convenient though when I need to do some shopping.

I didn't know there were special sports bike ones, though. How are they different from other panniers?

I had a backpack on at the L's Angels ride to the 'naki and can definitely not recommend that. Although I might have packed a bit too much, too. This time I know that I don't need things like spare shoes anyway :D

Not too sure, think it could be shorter and smaller? http://www.cycletreads.co.nz/products/1280-oxford_pannierssaddlebags/4971-oxford_1st_timers_sports_panni.aspx

The thing I like about riding is not having all the crap with me I could. I'm a typical chick, the bigger the handbag the more crap I carry around.

I'd still prefer someone else to carry the limoncello though. A) they are not my bags and B) I don't think they would even fit the bottles upright.

Ditto again. Although I don't generally use a tank bag. That stuff goes in the other pannier and the top box is reserved for my 15" laptop that I carry to work daily.

When I go camping I add to that a Kriega 30L drybag on the pillion seat. It's all pretty full by the time I load up with tent, bedding, kitchen etc...

When it was just me and the FZ8 with the large pack, I would always have it directly over the rear wheel, rather than hanging off the back, I got some unwanted movement with it once like that. Packs have a soft base and tend to fold over the rack a tad when heavily packed. Reversing it and having it on the seat worked better.....for me.

The Honda on the other hand?...didn't matter what you stacked on it, double pack/two tank bags (one on top of the pack) and both Anne and myself...get into 5th and just stay there..
The GSX is the same, except hard luggage all round. The two panniers stay on and I only add the box when we go away for more than a night.

I am quite chuffed at my surprising folding goddessness. I managed to pack my riding pants (those big armoured unattractive things) into my tiny tail bag. Along with the next days top, nickers, socks and light sleeping attire.

Depends if I need my winter pjs or not I might not need to even wear the panniers.

Good news is, if you actually wear those pants when riding instead of having them in your tail bag you will have so much more space in that bag... :msn-wink:

lol, sounds reasonable. I'm sure they will decrease the wind resistance and thus the bike will be faster if you ride in knickers. Unfortunately, out of some unfathomable reason, accidents seem to happen a lot around girls riding in knickers.

Wow, your mom was very specific. So you can wear whatever you want, as long as you're careful with busses. :msn-wink: My mom voiced it more like "in case something happens to you". That 'something' could mean anything, like getting run over by an ambulance or being abducted by aliens. In any case, I don't think it would be a high priority either.

They say a min of 2 weeks in a cast, then a recheck. If it has settled then I get a removable splint for 4 weeks. Not sure that using a clutch will be on the allowable list of things to during that time though

You could always fit a centrifugal clutch, or just do clutchless shifts then you only have to use it at intersections.

All you have to think about is turning up and having a blast. There is very little in the way expectations from the newer riders. Riding at the legal limit is all that is required thank you very much ta :apumpin:
I control the speed from the front of the slower group and if I loose sight of anyone, I just slow it up for a km or two and we're away again.

Leaving time from Ohura is 10am on the Sunday, breakfast at the Prison but our first fuel stop is in T/Nui for fuel (50kms)...if anyone wants a coffee there or what ever that's fine, was planning a coffee stop at Tekuiti and a lunch break at Pirongia, basically a reverse of Saturday.

Last time, on the Naki trip, I met up with Hayden and we met the group in Pirongia. The ETA was around 11:45, but I think it was closer to 12? I guess I don't have to worry about forgetting the sun screen this time, though you never know...

I don't think there have been specific times posted this time around, but I would think something around the same would work.

What are people doing for dinner? I decided to just get the B&B option for now, and work out food once I'm there. With the A La Carte dining, a Cossie club and other options, I thought it easier to do that rather than 'random set menu' dining :)

Just discovered this thread and I want to attend. I will phone through to the prison tomorrow morning and see what accommodation is left and will let you know.
You might be in luck, the Prison does sleep 35, and one other got a space a couple of days ago.

I've had mine for just shy of 2.5 years now and I still have that feeling. I look around other bikes and have yet to find anything I like more than mine. With the possible exception of Mark's new ride. If I ever feel the need to trade up I'd be looking at one of those.

Awesome amount of support and offers re Anne dilemma, I have two jackets and we'll try my winter one on for size, I can use my ''all seasons'' one if it comes to that.

I don't mind. Need to work on my smoothness anyway and this would be a good way to do it.

You can ride with us Doogle, looks like we will start out as a small group but will increase to 9 at Pirongia, and pick up Grashopper somewhere also, the snowball effect in action..:niceone:

Just rang the Prison and the Cossie Club opens at 4pm.
Spoke to Donna, she said there is 31 booked in?...how come I have 29 numbered?

Edit: Think I have figured it out by what Prison Warden told me..the numbers now stack up.

Big enough to go over the stupid cast big.

Was and effort to get the glove, but if you un-Velcro the wrist strap, well that helps

I've got myself a copy of Pro-Riders Group Riding DVD if anyone wants to borrow it. For those of us who havnt done large groups before.

I have a few poignant rules for the slower group. If at any time the group separates for whatever reason, I slow the pace down for 2-3 kms or until I can see that we are all together again.
Apart form the first rule which applies to me, there are four in which to remember, that will ensure a safe and pleasurable ride.

:Each Group Leader will control the group speed.
:There Will Be No Passing Within the Group
:The Use Of Mirrors is Paramount in a Group Ride Situation, Please use them…ALWAYS
:Watch Your Following Distances With The Bike In Front, That Person is Your Friend.
:Staggered Formation Where Possible (no single file on the straight bits)

It is only natural for these four rules to slip out of the brain bank once we're under way. Riding on the Motorway for the first 1/2 hour or so, gives newer riders time to keep the four rules in check.
I can see in my mirrors whats going behind and if there is any concern, it will be mentioned at the first stop.

I recall on our first Cape ride in 2011, two real new riders were right behind me all the way up the Cape road, I explained to them before setting off what was expected and they impressed me very much with their road skill at that time.

Thankfully this ride is NOT a large group ride. It is very much a group of bikers, split into smaller groups that end up at the same place.

Eventually.

The riding is well controlled and very inclusive of the newbie. We have no real expectations, other than you can ride at highway speed, and have a bike that can make the trip. Maha even goes to great lengths to consider, and incorporate the distance bikes can go before requiring fuel, and the distance some riders can go before requiring coffee :D

Relax! The most important thing about these trips away, is the bullshit we talk at the end of the ride. Oh, that and the bullshit spouted in the lead up to the ride, and heaven help us, the even more bullshit spouted after we are home safe and sound.

I was planning on joining you guys anyway and checked with the venue on whether I needed to book for a tent site (not really needed).
But now it seems that this year's Cold Kiwi is cancelled so if I don't go on this ride then I miss out for a while, so I'm even more keen to come along.
Count me as being in for this ride!

I'll head over to Ngaruawahia and be ready to go by 10:30, I'll wait for you guys to turn up for your 5 minute stop/regroup and join you then.
I guess that you guys will be close to 80kms out from your fuel up so as long as I'm similar or less I'll be fine to refuel at your next stop.

Yes Mark, we stop at the BP for those who may need a top up. The next fuel stop after that is Te Kuiti, an extra 90kms or 170 from Point A ...see ya there.
We (the slower group will be there about 11am) I calculate an average speed of 80kph for us, the other two groups not so much.
