This is not an Auckland exclusive ride, anyone from anywhere can do it. All you have to do organise yourself/and or others, make your own plans and get there.

**Road Condition Report of the Ohura/Taumarunui loop from Insomnia 12th June

a) moss covered parts of road in the shade
b) shiny bits of tar here & there
c) early afternoon will bring sun strike on some corners
d) road quality is OK I'll give you a update closer to the time
the area of concern at this time of year is Ongarue to Waimiha road which will be greasy & slippery on a good day but still rideable as long as YOU ride to the conditions

The day before we go assuming there is somewhere to sleep, the quicker the better to be honest...what has happened in past rides is that, 1-2 will say they're coming then pull out a few days prior, leaving not enough time for anyone else (who may not cash/time available) to come with us.
But just keep an eye on the thread, the Prison sleeps 35 inside...

Yep a full one is always in the car. And I've been meaning to put one in the bike (not like I exactly have space tho) if I go anywhere on a trip over night it gets checked and topped up. (Joys of work lol) neck brace will not fit under the small excuse of a pillion seat I have.

Mine is not much bigger than a wallet, can't fit a stretcher or a helicopter in it, just the essentials, plasters/panadol/bandage and a very small nurses uniform.

Haha that sounds like the usual contents of my handbag. Along with a sewing kit, 2 knives and many other things.

That's what I love about ridin tho. Leaving all my ties to everything behind and just being free. My phone (on silent), eftpos, licence, and visa if I'm going somewhere I could get stuck.

Can I safely store things on top of my battery?

Note to self: If you see Mark wearing a nurses uniform it's not because you drank too much alcohol. But drinking more might help forgetting that picture.

Did this section of your proposed route last weekend & found the following hazards which you will need to be aware of,

a) moss covered parts of road in the shade
b) shiny bits of tar here & there
c) early afternoon will bring sun strike on some corners
d) road quality is OK I'll give you a update closer to the time

the area of concern at this time of year is Ongarue to Waimiha road which will be greasy & slippery on a good day but still rideable as long as YOU ride to the conditions

Thanks for that, I was contemplating on a wee trip myself before the due date but no real need...;) I have added the points to post #4
Encountered a moss laden road between Mangakino/Te Awamutu...slightly wet/damp conditions but no drama because (as you state) we rode accordingly.
This sort of information is very helpful indeed for obvious reasons. The sun is low in the sky and overnight dampness can be there all day.
To combat sun strike, I have a strip of black insulation tape at the top of my visor, have done on all my helmets, works a treat.

Clean visor, allow a longer piece than just enough, place tape at the top just on the internal padding line. Try helmet on, if you can see light adjust, by repositioning the tape. Cut off excess tape with scissors.
Tip: don't stretch the tape on but be firm enough with it to stop any air small bubbles. I just use a rag to rub it down.

It peels off easily enough so no real drama.

Maybe I'll ask my 145 kg ex prison officer mate from Ohura Prison to come along to add a little realism and tell you some "true tales" or maybe just recreate the screams :weep: Having been slammed, strangled, and my arms twisted savagely by him I can vouch for his technique. Sadly (or perhaps not) he doesn't ride a motorbike. From the looks of the show of hands there may be prison overcrowding. I'll wait till closer to the time and decide if I can afford to join you or if I just meet up for some rides.

I'll probably leave it until nearer the date to decide if I can do this one as well as the Cold Kiwi - see how tight money is.

I've moved from Auckland now so I'd probably look to meeting up in Ngaruawahia and going from there.
I've also traded in the 400cc scooter that was such a great city commuter since I'm not commuting in the city any more, but the RF should be up to the task so no worries there.

Just as well. By then I should be well healed and have the bike back.

And before anyone asks, yes, I had a rather unfortunate meeting with the pavement (not of my own making). I was turning rather slowly after the lights went green a week ago last Friday (right turn before dawn in heavy rain over white paint with bright lights facing me). Next thing I know I'm on the ground and the bike is facing the wrong way. I'm saw but OK. Seems like I've cracked, or at least bruised, a rib and my ankle broke the foot peg bracket. The bike is almost getting a whole new right side.

Yep, panniers were on (don't ride without them). The right one lost a fair bit of plastic off the front corner. Probably saved the rear cowling.

Yeah, I almost can't imagine a worse set of circumstances. When I took off from the lights there was noone behind me. They must've been trying to catch the green.

Ouch! Bloody winter eh? Get well soon.
Ouch indeed. I went down hard on my shoulder and suffice it to say that I won't be in a hurry to wear my pocket knife on my belt while riding again. Could've been worse though, they managed to avoid actually running me over.

They seem to be running short of space as I enquired about a double or twin room room for me and Trina and they asked whether we would share with others as the only room for a couple has bunks in as well but they will try and move things around.

I told them we dont want to share with "those motorbike people"

To my knowledge thus far, there are four couples coming. I would say two of those four would not want to share.
Hope they can work something out, the place does sleep 35.

I think you might find this sort of behaviour is not encouraged on any of Maha's rides, quite the opposite infact. No doubt he will be along shortly to emphasise the ride rules. Once in your place, no overtaking, being a cardinal one. Being stupid on your bike is not a clever way to ride, we have a 100% safety record on our rides and are in no hurry to change that.

Creative banter is all good, I mean, who remembers Boots gettin' the holeshot on Doogle in New Plymouth?
Or Virgil not bringing us Beef Fillets at Coopers Beach last year (probably would have had he had a knife ;)

Contrary to popular belief (from some who have yet attend one of these rides) the rules set out are primarily for the 'constant speed' group. (the learner's)
The ride is for everyone to enjoy at their own level. Each group leader has control of the pace of his group, and while there is no expectation for all to ride just under or around the speed limit, this is NOT a ride for hero's.

I maintain that we are a group ride that rides as a group, that is the whole essence of what we do. Providing a safe riding environment for the newer rider. Having fun is the priority.
Each ride so far has done just, this will be the sixth outing for the L's Angels....those who have attend prior, make these rides what they are.

PS: Katmans personal views on how these rides are conducted, are irrelevant.
PPS: Adult undies may be required.

Presuming that all goes well and I can make it that weekend:

Saturday:
I'll ride from Morrinsville to Ngaruawahia, fuel up, grab drink and be waiting for you guys by 10:30am.
Ride with you guys, stop in Pirongia and stretch my legs and then continue with you to Te Kuiti at which time my schedule will completely synchronise with yours when I fuel up and have lunch.

Sunday:
When smaller bikes stop in Ngaruawahia I'll also stop there and then head off back to Morrinsville.

It looks like I will have no issue with range as I don't need to do the 226km part and besides that the RF will go that far before hitting reserve.

You should try a Burgman 400 scooter - 13.5L fuel tank and not hard to get over 300kms and still have over 1L of petrol left. I once got over 380kms on a tank with mine. It was only 91 octane as well - really cheap to run. I could also do 3 oil changes with 4L of oil and the oil filters were costing me $8.95 each. It was one hell of a good Auckland commuter vehicle!

The RF900R is way dearer on petrol, oil, rego, etc. But on the plus side it has similar weight and close to 4x the horsepower.

Nearly*

Let's just say that I did notice a little difference in the horsepower when I changed to the RF900R and with around the same weight had about 4x as much power.
I don't recall ever going north of 200kph** with the Burgman.

Overall I'd rate the Burgman as a better city commuter with better storage (~65 litres under the seat & 35 litres in the top box for ~100 litres of lockable storage), better economy, better wind protection, better comfort with easier riding position.
Overall I'd rate the RF as a better open road sports tourer with better capability to overtake at open road speeds.
Horses for courses!

* It has horsepower and the number is between 1 & 194. It is less than 195 for sure, but only one hundred and something less!
** I'm either talking theoretically or maybe I was on a closed road.

That is an issue, there are a couple of stints where there is no gas for 134 kms
I will do some research on your bike fuel consumtion..sound way wrong to me...
Edit: 16 Ltr tank @ 122kms = 7.6 litres per km?.. nup, something not right there.

What invariably happens on these rides is, at every stop I get asked by some ‘’How far till the next fuel stop’’?
Our rides are designed for the learner/newer rider with the smaller bikes which is why the stops are more frequent that usual.
With that in mind, everyone stops, and those that need to top up, can do so.

The issue for you is Te Kuiti - Taumarunui (145kms) on the Saturday
Sunday =Taumarunui –Te Kuiti (134) no servo in between.

My old Ninja 250 (the parallel twin) used to get nearly 300kms to a tank. Is yours the inline 4 version? Even so 122kms is piss poor, it must be running waaaaay rich. Hopefully Spectrum can sort it for you ;)

Always handy Ash...I just had a peek at Kawasaki site and found some answers. 15kms per Ltr per seems reasonable.
Better fuel consumption on longer trips with a more constant throttle.

‘’Hi all, wonder how many K's other ZXR250 owners get out of a tank? I get like 150km's usually filling up around 10litres’’

‘’I’d expect about 250 for a tank of fuel.
what kind of riding do you mainly do? stop starting is always going to be worse’’

‘’I'm getting about 140km before reserve, but mine's running rich and in need of a general tune up. I would love to be getting 250km a tank’’.

''I used to get 300km+ out of mine (92 zxr250-c) even flogging the guts out of it I could still get 250-300km from a tank.

Haha luckily it won't be quite that dodgy, I have plenty of space for a fuel container in my top box ;)

The hose & mouth thing is called Fellatio - I have no idea of what word you were trying to spell.
Unless you were talking about syphoning, in which case I completely misunderstood.

You better make sure it seals very well, or else strap it to the back seat... don't want your top smelling of fuel...

I'll probably be tootling along, but just a day trip and return to Auckland in the evening... easier than figuring out accommodation, whether I can do both days etc ;)

If you REALLY want to, My wife can take the CRV down and carry fuel and some bags. She has expressed her interest.
