One megawatt battery packs!
Speaking of batteries I see they're working on aluminium-ion batts, capable of a 1min dead-full charge @ a cheaper price & less volatile than Lithium-ion.
It doesn't explode even if drilled through, has far greater life cycle & can be bent & folded. Still couple kinks like it only does 2.25v, short of the Li-ion 3.6v & power to weight is down on Li-ion but it's looking promising

They have tax laws that make rich people and corporations pay a lot of tax on their profits.:bleh:
Norway is one of the most heavily taxed countries in the world with a total tax burden of roughly 45% of GDP– almost 4x Hong Kong and nearly twice the US.
VAT here is a whopping 25%. Personal income tax rates border 55%. Corporate profits tax ranges from 28% to as high as 78%. Norway even has a direct WEALTH TAX.
The Norwegian tax authority’s own website even states, “The Norwegian tax system is based on the principle that everybody should pay tax according to their means and receive services according to their needs.”

They do tax those that work harder and longer more than most, but the reason they still have those high income taxpayers is they don't discriminate as much wrt spending. They spend hugely on free health, education and infrastructure that benefits everyone, not just the "poor".
You don't get the ridiculous situation we have here where the middle income majority is taxed so highly that they need subsidies to survive.

This is really odd. I had never heard of it anyway.
Svalbard. People living on Svalbard (Spitsbergen) pay reduced taxes due to "Svalbardtraktaten".(New Zealand December 29, 1923 is a signatory)
Svalbard is part of Norway: Svalbard is completely controlled by and forms part of the Kingdom of Norway. However, Norway's power over Svalbard is restricted by the limitations listed below:
•Taxation: This allows taxes to be collected, but only enough to support Svalbard and the Svalbard government. This results in lower taxes than mainland Norway and the exclusion of any taxes on Svalbard supporting Norway directly. Also, Svalbard's revenues and expenses are separately budgeted from mainland Norway.
•Environmental conservation: Norway must respect and preserve the Svalbard environment.
•Non-discrimination: All citizens and all companies of every nation under the treaty are allowed to become residents and to have access to Svalbard including the right to fish, hunt or undertake any kind of maritime, industrial, mining or trade activity. The residents of Svalbard must follow Norwegian law though Norwegian authority cannot discriminate against or favor any residents of any given nationality.

I have no problem with public ownership of service providers and infrastructure that benefits the whole community.
Just with a toxic environment caused by a tax system that double-dips the "redistribution" machinery by not only taxing high earners stupidly more than low earners but then denies high earners access to those same services and assets.
The Scandinavians have it the right way around: community expectations of acceptable individual productive behaviour THEN share the results evenly. Without the productive behaviour there's not actually anything left to "share".

I was more meaning the heavy taxing of the Corporations.
I note also they do tax the high earner heavily.
They also own the smelters the gas and oil companies the power companies the mineral companies all the stuff we seem hell bent on selling off.

The only words you need to know is "Cold" although they likely have a hundred or so words for it.
Norway and the EU enjoy good and close relations, although Norway is not a member of the European Union. The Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) is the mainstay of our cooperation, and it ensures that Norway takes part in the EU internal market. We are also part of the Schengen Agreement and cooperate with the EU on foreign and security policy issues.

That fails to take into account a cost of living that has outpaced those income figures especially when you take into account the increased number of people working per household to earn that figure.
It also disregards the fact that our standard of living has fallen compared to the other countries that we used to lead.

We have fallen in GDP/ capita steadily since the 50's
GDP is somewhat dependent on exchange rates, which have been known to be somewhat unrelated to productivity before now.
And they're not actually measuring GDP anyway, they're measuring performance based on Human Development Index, which includes a bunch of outcomes related to quality of life.
Interesting to note that the biggest drop in NZ GDP was related to Britain's entry to the EU and subsequent trade barriers to NZ goods. Which sorta hints that free trade benefits producers, rather than consumers, dunnit?

And they're not actually measuring GDP anyway, they're measuring performance based on Human Development Index, which includes a bunch of outcomes related to quality of life.
Interesting to note that the biggest drop in NZ GDP was related to Britain's entry to the EU and subsequent trade barriers to NZ goods. Which sorta hints that free trade benefits producers, rather than consumers, dunnit?
All I can say is it isn't as rosy as you were making out in regards to how well off we are now.
What were the figures the other day 1/3 of childrens std basic daily needs not being met?

H, by any reasonable comparison to any other country we do OK.
By any reasonable comparison to any other era it's as rosy as a fucking rosy thing.
All I've ever said is that the overwhelmingly negative reporting, reinforced by noisy socialist lobbying is completely at odds with the facts.

It also disregards the fact that our standard of living has fallen compared to the other countries that we used to lead.
We have fallen in GDP/ capita steadily since the 50's

"we were ranked 7th in 1960

I'll be over in the corner here, quietly thankful that we, our peers and especially the world's poorest are living longer than we used to, and continue to do so. If you improve the factors that affect mortality most then of course you're going to get a convergence of outcomes across the data set. That's a good thing innit?

I am not bitter and twisted about anything, I just not accept your figures, as they are rhetoric that is being spun and have no meaningful point of reference.
I took one of your measurements you hose to post and put it in its proper context.

They're not my figures. They originate from http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.DYN.LE00.IN , https://www.clio-infra.eu/datasets/search and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy No shortage of references. No rhetoric there.
Have a look around. You can probably find more bad news in there, but you'll have to wade through a bunch of good news to find it.
And I don't think you can call it a major fall when the improvement in life expectancy in the top dozen countries is at least an order of magnitude greater than the variation in improvement between them. I'd say "proper context" would be considering the couple of days separating them as of little statistical significance contributing fuck all to the overall quality of life the original survey covered.
If you're hell bent on hyper-focusing on our "rank" amongst the worlds elite living standards as defined by improved life expectancy then take comfort from the fact that for the last half decade we've improved more than our cohorts. Who gets the pat on the back for that?

And yet the numbers you admit there's nothing wrong with stand alone as proof of improvement.

To point out, ad nausium that some countries have done better in some areas is a pretty transparent attempt to spin good news as bad. The only reason I can see anyone might do that is in an attempt to rationalise a claim that there's nothing to be cheerful about purely to deny the "right wing" any ability to claim responsibility for it.

Foregone conclusion she'd be a biker really. She had her first ride up and down the drive aged 6 weeks with her car seat bungeed to the packrack and hasn't stopped since then.
OK, so who had the bigger smile? Granddad or Miss 9-YearOld?

Reasons to be cheerful:
My new job is great. Shit from my old job will sort itself out one way or another, in time.
I love the trackday.
I get two weeks off in a few days where I dont HAVE to do ANYTHING except whatever the fuck I want... SWMBO is working except stat days so if i want to lie about in bed till midday I can, lie about and read I can, lie about and listen to music I can, lie about and take a nap I can.
Motorbike is going great and I intend to do a few day rides (not just Akaroa GP).
We are in a position this year to pay Christmas bonuses so I can make my workmates happy.
Yeah, life's good.

Guaranteed to be Miss 9 YearOld. Grandad will be too worried about making it home safely with precious cargo intact less he incur the wrath of Miss 9 YearOld's mother and Grandmother.

I did in fact, but as I have clearly stated the article was a puff piece derived from selected information in the report.
A puff piece. Are you serious? Did you read the report to compare the article's content? If there was any "puff" involved it was the fact that the article picked up on Clarke's negative narative, which wasn't part of the report at all.
The report, tainted by the UN's socialist agenda as it is, (this is the crowd that defines "poor" as those earning less than 60% of the national mean) is nonetheless seriously impressed with global performance:
Over the past two decades, the world has made major strides in human development. Today, people are living longer, more children are going to school and more people have access to clean water and basic sanitation.
Since 1990, 2 billion people have been lifted out of low human development, extreme income poverty has been reduced by more than a billion. Every region of the world has seen Human Development Index (HDI) gains.
As a matter of interest I've been checking on some independent sources of opinion about NZ quality of life:
http://www.mercer.com/newsroom/2014-quality-of-living-survey.html#city-rankings
https://expatexplorer.hsbc.com/survey/
http://www.workingin-newzealand.com/live-and-settle/life-in-new-zealand/top-living-destination#.VnSf_fl96M8
http://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/country_result.jsp?country=New+Zealand
http://www.enz.org/shades-of-new-zealand.html
Which does include a fair bit of negative feedback. Mostly to do with the cost of shit:
The price gouging Kiwis are subjected to. Even taking in to consideration shipping costs and a smaller market, I still don’t feel that 3x the cost of the same item/brand compared to the US market is justifiable. Cosmetics, glasses, contact lenses solution, and books are the things that have most recently irked me.
A phenomena that's annoyed and puzzled most Kiwis for decades, but while there's no reason to be cheerful about the trade barriers that cause that it hardly compares to improvements for 2 billion actual poor over the last few years in that regard.

The announcement that 27% of children live in households with adults earning under 60% of mean wage?
Think I'll stick to laughing at your description of a UN report showing NZ in a good light as having been influenced by the NZ national party.

households living below the 60% median income poverty threshold
Now THAT's spin.
Face it, dude, it takes a special effort be actually poor in NZ, after you've managed to avoid finding someone willing to pay you for providing some service or other you also have to avoid the veritable avalanche of benefits designed to prevent you from facing the consequences of your failure.
There's something to be truly cheerful about: no labour party govt to convert such spin into yet more increases in those benefits in their usual pre-rigor mortis twitch response to such transparent bullshit.

Poverty's to blame, now?
Putting aside the laughable definition of "poverty" and the fact that these "children" are up to 17 years old, who exactly is to blame for poverty?
No, no don't tell me, it's..... it's John Key, innit?

Then you used it incorrectly.
In case it's not obvious, my logic is that children can never be poor. No matter how distorted the definition the income of any family is the responsibility of the adults in the family.

Twas he who said - "Would that God the gift to give us to see our selves as others see us"! - Hmmm or was that Stewie Griffin from Family Guy? (whatever)
We had two plaques either side of our coal range mantel when we were kids I.E. "When two quarrel both are in the wrong"! (then we got a hiding)
The other one said - "Cheer-up the best is yet to come"! - Funny it always goes through my mind when I see this thread of yours!

Yep ... Little Miss 9 wore the big smile at the end and Grandma even got a lovely photo of it.
I stopped after about 4 minutes at an intersection after a couple of long sweepers and asked if she was OK. "Yeah" (in a tone of why the hell wouldn't I be). "This is FUN!"
So cool (but still quite nerve racking for the pilot).
