but in my effort to keep up, I think I got to around 60k over the legal limit, which isn't so good.
I don't mind riding at 100, and will deal with any tickets I get for that, but I'm not so happy if I end up in licence-loss territory.
If your not happy with going at those speeds, why are you doing them?
And why are you doing those speeds if your not legal to do so.
The point is, As long as we all make it, travel at your own pace and enjoy yourself

Hense why the Wednesday night rides were started!
So people could ride the way they like!
Not that that should change any other ride you go on.
As we have said SOOOOOOO often on here. No one makes anyone else ride faster than how they like.
Ride your own pace.

Careful Uncle B, your starting to sound like someone incharge! People might start to think your a responsible, well respected person in the community
You don't want that to happen...
I like to call him Yoda.
Tis true, you should ride at your own pace in group rides, otherwise people have accidents for pushing too hard.
I followed hsvboy06 (I think) all the way, considered passing him a few times then decided that we were doing the speed limit, it's not a race and that he'd probably catch me on the first corner we encountered anyway! So basically rode to my ability and thought the pace was fine, at no point did we go over 110kmph (that I can recall).
No dig here, just saying, ride at your own pace, especially on tcwnr, as it is meant to be for people who enjoy a slower pace, everyone always waits, and there is usually someone behind you to keep an eye on you, the nice thing about these kinds of rides.
Enjoy :scooter:

Cruise or no cruise I liked how the size of the group and its varing abilities ment that I could find a group that I felt cozy in and yet pushed enough to learn and take it that few % harder. (I did re-eveluate if thatwas behind a 2-smoker... cough!) This wednesday night ride is labled as a cruise and I think that even though it may have been quicker (in my helmet) I still felt that other riders around me gave us plenty of room as they zoomed past and at no point did i feel presured to move and that I think is most important for the newer riders.

I think the pressure comes from not keeping up, feeling left out, being worried about forgotten and left behind and ofcourse the feeling of competition.
I remember that when i was a total newbie i felt the same thing, i had to keep up or i'd be left behind in the middle of nowhere with no one to help me if it all went wrong

there should be no pressure. Everyone should be as relaxed as can be and enjoy the ride. No one would leave anyone behind. They will always wait. I remember about 15 months ago when I was a newbie and went on big rides with UB and Dafe. Although I am very competitive by nature, you know what you can and can't do..keeping up was something I could not do and did not even try. Just ride your own pase and enjoy the ride..don't worry about the fast guys, let them worry about you.

I always think to myself as I dribble along, "I'm sure everyone would rather wait 10mins for me to catch up than have to spend 2 hours by coming back to find me tangled in a fence or scrape me up from under a car and pile me into an ambulance or worse, a hearse".
I understand the pressure to keep up, but in the end, it's you riding your bike.:scooter:

Yeah, I hear ya there. I felt that way when I started riding too, but found that I just couldnt do anywhere near the speeds that anyone was doing so I just puddled along at ridiculous speeds of 20-50k's over the hill and found that no one really did mind waiting for me. Someone always stayed behind me or waited for me at stops and usually gave me advice on what I could do to improve my riding etc. Now a year later im slowly getting faster, but more importantly im relaxed and confident in my riding skills and am finding that im riding alot more smoothly and really enjoying myself. Learning to slow down, ride to your own skill level and not worrying about what everyone else is doing is part of the learning experience I reckon....

mmm i feel that even if we explain to newbies time and time again that we will wait not all of them will completly listen.
the only way i see to avoid this is to have a few people ride with them, ive followed a few people back after rides doing only 70km/h its not all that bad and atleast they know they dont have a cage up their ass harrassing them because they have an L plate and are only going 70 ks.

And to the newbie's.....Don't be afraid to ask for help or with anything you want to know. No question is a dumb question. That's how you learn.

Sure. But they'd be waiting a while at the Rimutaka summit if I'd gone to Mana.
Was there a tail-end charlie behind me to let me know? I never knew who it was.
If I can't ride with the group, there's not much point going on a group ride, is there? I thought that's what the 'C' should help with.
Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed the trip. Just a little more organisation would be good.

Because I'm there for a group ride, not a solo one.

That has been discussed many times on many threads. Riding on open roads at 70 is somewhat hazardous. I understand most cops won't ticket me for it; 120-130 may well be a different story.
And ... I didn't work out who you were, but I'm guessing you were one of those leaving me behind, therefore travelling at speeds you weren't legal for? Hardly unusual for members here ...

Woah!!!! Settle mate! Uncle Bruce is actually one of the guy's that ALWAYS stays behind and makes sure that everyone is OK. He also mentors new riders and is one of the good guys.
I can understand why your so upset as I felt the same as you when I first started going on group rides. Unfortunately not everyone rides at the same pace and while I can see where your coming from re the "group ride" thing it is not viable to have EVERYONE riding up the road in one big line. The group ride thing is meant to be a social thing where we socialise where we stop. There was someone at the end of the group but you would not have seen them as they were quite far behind watching out for the really new, less confident riders. Just keep coming to the rides, someone will be looking out for you, but unfortunately not everyone is going to ride at the same pace. If your really concerned ask someone to stay with you and they will.

All agreed; I don't expect everyone to ride together. I've been on 3 TCWNR's so far, plus the Big Ride to Martinborough. All four were great; the two I didn't hear briefings for were just slightly less great. Well, the dark and windy (ie breezy, not bendy) ones weren't quite so much fun either; daylight savings is good

Thank you - that's what I was going to suggest.
Although, perhaps TWO newbie officers - one to lead (preferably who knows where we're going) and one to follow.
When I was a real newbie (particularly on my slower FXR) it was very comforting having other bikes leading and following. Just knowing you're all waiting up the road somewhere, waiting to disappear off again as soon as I arrive, is little comfort.
What a big discussion my 10 cents started... I think we're all agreed that more organisation is required to look after the newbies, but other than that people can do what they like - fair enough.
FTR, if I'm deemed worthy of newbie minding, I'm happy to do it - that's why I followed Dreamer's friend all the way back from the top of the hill - keeping the cars at bay. (Didn't realise at that time Uncle B was behind me!)

On a totally different note... Just wanted to recall a funny thing that happened for those of you that weren't there:
We were standing in line at the pub waiting to order our meals when the guy comes out from the back with one meal saying something about "It's for a guy... in a blue jacket..." He's looking a bit worried as he sees the ever-increasing number of bikers standing outside. Stu (TSS) says "Oh, that's Fatjim - just go out there and say 'This is for FAT Jim'" (his emphasis, not mine!). The poor guy gulped, thinking he might be being sent to his death - walking into a group of leather clad bikies and calling one of them fat - and I'm sure I saw him say a short prayer before he headed out the door...

Meet at the usual time and place, 5 min before departing we decide on the night where we are going. Majority vote rules, destination will depend on numbers, weather etc......
Each ride we will need a lead rider and a sweeper, if no one steps forward, again, majority vote rules.
This way everyone has an input and can voice any concerns.
Just a thought.

Well if my full test was anything to go by, they don't always do it by the book. No way mine took that long, for starters. When it came to "detecting and reacting to hazards", there were none! So, I had to make them up: "I checked for cars coming in from the side road - none - and I checked the road surface for oil etc - none - and as I approached that pedestrian crossing I looked for people about to cross - none - etc etc" The only thing he told me I forgot to mention was that, as I approached and went through an intersection with no other cars in sight, there was a car behind me - him - that could be a hazard. I thought about saying I thought it was safe to assume he could drive safely, but thought better of it!
You'll have no problems - just relax and ride safely.

The Cruisy Wednesday Night Ride.
Departing 6:30 at the southern end of Avalon park by the duck/elephant pond.
(Turn off the Hutt motorway and onto the Kennedy Good bridge, the carpark is 100metres past the end of the bridge, on your left hand side)
These rides generally consist of a group ride with a purpose - A pitstop at a pub! Pub destinations previously ranged from Featherston, Wellington city, Karori, Trentham, Paremata and Paekakariki.
All first timers are welcome. So feel free to tag along for an enjoyable social event.
Is the departing point as quoted? This will be my first time. I want a slow ride as still upskilling and running the bike in.

OK - The rain that hit town will more or less clear but will tend to hand around the ranges (ie the Takas) this evening. Hutt, Mana, Kapiti should be fine - (it is certainly a hot sunny avo here at the moment)
So - suggest riding to the West coast tonite? Either the Sandbar at Mana or the Waterfront at Raumati Beach. I will check the ridability of the PK hill on the way down.

Hay ya guys.
What sort of speeds do you guys go at now. I don't really mind how fast it gets but I'm trying to get a newbie riding more so they feel more confident, which I guess is the reason for this ride. Just need to know how fast you all go now though? As you've been doing this ride for awhile, I bet your all a bit faster then at the beginning.

What he said.....
There are others that wear there L-plates and someone follows the rear of the ride, with regular stops noone gets far behind the rest, everyone just rides at their own pace so there shouldn't be any problems.

Congrates Str8 on finally selling the beast, good luck to Mrs KD and PB on your exams, I know you'll do well...
As for tonight, if the weathers crap, which currently it is. Why don't we just arrange to meet at a pub somewhere, sometime? So those that want to ride can, and the others can meet up at the pub.
Just an idea?

Oh the pub, I love that idea but if the weathers crap I prob wont be able to come as I only have my bike and I really dont wanna risk riding over the motorway in blutery winds.... Guess we'll just see what the weathers doing huh!

What sort of speeds do you guys go at now. .
What they said. All speed groups catered for. Normally someone will lead the ride, and will not exceed the speed limit. (Indiviuals who want to go faster may do what they like - its their responsibility). Normally there is a sweeper who keeps an eye on the slower riders. Stops are regular for them to catch up. The emphisis is on the social side of the ride, with a pub stop compulsory.
The "C" in TCWNR stands for "Cruise"
There is always the TRTNR on Thurdays if you want something a bit more lively. Some folk do both.

I think if we say the ride is on, but for those who don't want to ride, they can meet us at the ale house after 7.30. The riders can take the long way round to get there... Where ever that might be

Tonight's ride: Elephant Pond to Haywards, Porirua (via the south side of the inlet), back road through Tawa, Johnsonville, Crofton Downs, Karori to finish at the Speights Bar in Tinakori Road.
A bit windy in places. A reasonable turnout, all things considered. And nice to see some new faces!
I'm curious to know what happened to the SR250 (and Uncle B and Pex).

If you were wondering what happened to Uncle B, Myself and Koni (SR250). Well Koni's bike decided that it had done enough riding by the inlet, and gave up. So to cut a long and boring story short...
'The Amazing Uncle B Towing Service', came to the rescue, and to save the day!
Anyways, A huge Thanks to him, and Wayne from Motomart who stopped as well to see if he could do anything. It was really appreciated, even though it was to no avail.
Nonetheless while Uncle B and Koni were nice and warm in the Cage, I spent the next 20 min heading back home in the misery of the Wellington Weather that managed to make its presents felt. And I'm still suffering from it!
Oh well, I trust everyone had a good night, see you all next week. Hopefully for a bit longer too.
