LISTEN UP CHCH

Ok so depending on what we wake up to tomorow weather wise, if the east coast is wet whos keen to ride inland in the hope that we will miss some of the rain?

Will decide with those that meet up at the Rolly BP at 9:30

:bash: It's a south-westerly front so it'll suck it's way around the hills, so either way it wont be avoided :bleh:

Cal and I arrived Dunedin at 6 with no probs whatever. No wet at all anywhere yeehar.

Glad you got there in one piece. Good to see you today too:ride:

Cal and I arrived Dunedin at 6 with no probs whatever. No wet at all anywhere yeehar. No issues on the road except for the car that moved across the middle line toward Cal in the middle of a bridge :gob: Then there was the light green falcon ute (had trailed us for 20km and thought it might have been a mufti, but no) that cruised up the steeper parts of the motorway at 160. No how would we know that

Most likely we will catch up with Scummdog and Ruralman at Lawrence tomorrow - was it 10am?

Yes 10am
There's a couple of interesting alternative routes on the way up to Roxburgh - probably do the one where you turn off at Millers flat over the Clutha river and then ride up the other side to Roxburgh - you can go right up to the Rox. Dam and go over it but you'll miss the best cherry orchards that way - we gotta pick up some artilliary.
The other one is to turn off at Raes Junction and do the route via Moa Flat and back down to Ettrick - great road on a nice day but it gets pretty high and exposed on a shitty day. Unfortunately you can't do this one and then the next one without a bit of back tracking so its probably one or the other - the river ride is also a bit more Harley Friendly if you know what I mean.

I'll go with the river ride - Moa Flat ride might make a bit of a mission of things especially if the weather is 'iffy'.

Was thinking that it is probably easiest just to meet up at Lawrence. Saves one or other having to wait twice or whatever. Will txt you when we split from Dunedin (St Leonards). May catch you en route anyhow.

Was raining fairly heavily in Cromwell from about 1700 last night. Hasn't rained much since about 2000 though. Looks like its nearly stopped up the headwaters of Lake Wakatip and Wanaka too. Shouldn't be too bad, might get a couple of showers on teh way through. Better get those mittens out d.

Silage
9th December 2006, 06:40
Possibly the wind just changed, cos Cal and I are going to take the soft option - straight up the coast from Dunedin, lunch and latte in Oamaru then up the valley to Camp KB.

The dopler rain radar thingy shows a bit of the wet stuff about Chch at 7am but clear South of Ashvegas. So hopefully you lot from North won't get too damp. Looks like it will be short lived.

Good riding and take it easy on wet roads. Cya there.

Leaving here about 9:30. Has been raining off and on for a while but it looks like it will break up inland, probably between Beaumont and Millers flat. I think the coastal route will be wet for a while yet. Ah well I suppose thats what wet weather gear, hot grips and Transalp hand guards are for !!
Take it easy and we'll see ya'll later - the ride home on Sunday should be worth it and actually the forecast for around Mt Cook for today was pretty good too.
Pucker up for those cherry stones!!

Crikey...looks like I'm the first to post after the trip!

A great turn-out of about 25 folks and a good night of restraint and self-control was had by all.

I didn't get away from home until 4pm and had dry roads all the way.

Woke up to a fantastic day today and most of us went for a ride up to Mt Cook - all except the South Otago boys, they all had problems with their heads I think?
A strange coincidence developing the same motor fault at the same time!

I'll leave it to others to provide a more full report.
As usual I didn't take a single photo all weekend.

It was good to meet up with a whole bunch of new faces.
Cheers all.

Well, I have just got home from the inaugural South Island KB rally.

Bloody good week end, really good people, great ride home today from Otematata via Omarama, Mount Cook, Tekapo, Hakataramea and Kurow.

There was not any "sign" of any activity at the "Shearers Quarters" as I rode past, I think every one has left OK.

Really enjoyed your company boys and girls, lets do it again sometime! Cheers John.

Just a quick note from CB. Some sorry ass quietly crept in with a croaky voice and took the rural way home. Seems the heartburn he had was due to an apple. Yeah right. Next time he will have to take his momma and eat more appropriately and SHARE the drink. Says she who had a quiet bottle of cheap vino last night with mother (who cooked tea!!). Anyway someone is cleaning the bike of all those sticky things and heading for bed shortly no doubt. I'll just continue with the G & T and whatever else I come across. Bed is calling - but I can't go without adding to this thread tonight. It was really great to meet you all and put faces to names for the first time. I'm not sure what this getting to know each other bonding session will do to the interactions on the posts here over the next few months - more targeted fun??!! (and of course we won't mention the mops!!)
We do have a great "family" atmosphere when we get together. I'm sure this website will continue to grow in the South Island and with any luck it will be with people who get on as well as we all seemed to and just love our bikes, and those gentle chatting evenings of culture that extend ALL FUCKING NIGHT!!!!
SD and I had a great trip home with a couple of interesting interludes which I'll post on tommorrow/;later
Lets do it all again next year

Bloody good week end, really good people, great ride home today from Otematata via Omarama, Mount Cook, Tekapo, Hakataramea and Kurow.

It really was a bloody fine weekend...words fail me... It was sensational trip, even the rain on the way down seem to vanish before us. I think we managed about 2mins of wet stuff in total, tho it was a bit nippy at times, and sun was really appreciated when it was there. Ma bloody head still hurts...

FARK me... bloody bloody, bloody bloody... shit hot weekend people :Punk:
Saturday started out windy wet on and off sort a thing but figgered am I a real biker or not, so headed off to meet up.
Pulling into Rolly and the rain turned on frigen heavy and i was thinking well bikes dirty now might as well keep going.
Funnily enuff that patch of rain was about all we wore apart from the odd sprinkle, but never got wet all day.
Ride to Waimate was a bit mundane, but thats State highway 1 for ya. Waimate thru to Kurow and Otematata is an awesome wee stretch. At the Otematata had my first couple of beers for the day and waited for the southern lot to meet up. Headed down to the camp after they finally showed their faces, cos apparently we weren't cool enough to booze with
Chose a bunkroom in our 5 star hotel and hit the whisky

Sat evening Things that i have managed to remember from the evening include chatting to the newcomer Chris and jacking up a ride on the Victory, TWR dancing with a mop cos he spilled his beverages and food items, the pip spitting competition: I was first to invent the multi-fire-pip-spit however I failed miserably trying to hit the target.
After our minutes silence, we all sat in a circle like an AA congregation where we each explained the reason we were there.
What an awesome bunch of people, I very much enjoyed the time spent

Sunday My head was hurting, but managed to drag my arse in the shower and then had some breakie, slowly got my stuff together and headed off to Omarama for some real coffee.
Regrouped and headed off to Mt Cook. This is first time I have actually gone into the Hermitage (a very impressive building). This is a very fast piece of road, I today heard rumours of Woodybee hitting 210, Speedygirl doing 200
and Rashika doing 220...buts thats all more than likely the booze talking.
The head still hurt, and you probably gathered that it still does, so had another coffee and really enjoyed the ride out.
xknut offered his Victory... well ok I asked, so we swapped rides, tell ya what... different, and the DOHC engine would leave a Hog in the weeds, and what a racket sounded like a 2-1 Aprilla, not me but was different thats for real, hell a rides sweet regardless.
From then on the group slowly disbanded and we headed home on a perfectly brilliant day. Got home, washed the bikes and promptly fell into the sack.

...great hangover.........
Don't remind me, it wasn't flash.

Yes, we all just seemed to get along like a house on fire. It was almost alnight btw, I was keen to keep going but you old fellas just can't cope.

Great time... was just thinking, I know I said I can be a quiet bugger... maybe I should change my name again... to Mute_man????

Yes, a very good idea. What I also liked is us going around one by one saying why we there there. I thought it was a great touch.

I would just like to thank Bruce for the venue, perfect. John for vor the work he put in to the signage, the running around he done in his truck for all of us, taking along the canals into Tekapo. Lastly to Bernard for putting forward a great idea and following it through.

Well done Jen, nice to see you made it home safe and enjoyed your whole trip.
It was nice to meet you.
I guess there are a couple of little people happy to have you home too!
I am also pleased to hear that you visited inlinefour, something I would like to do my self.
I do not know him but we have exchanged a couple of times on KB and I have been interested in his progress etc, good one, it was nice to hear.
I am still away from home with Mrs O/r we rode over to Arrowtown for lunch on Monday morning, then hopped over the Crown Range to our son's place at Wanaka for a couple of days.
We will be riding home over the Lindis today after watching the grandkids swimming after school.
The day is nice should be a good ride, just love the Lindis. It sure is tough living here in Paradise! Cheers John.

Hi John

Yep.. Little people's reactions were just delicious!!! as are they!!

Was great to meet IL4!! was also a bit hard, but worth it! he had sent me several very positive & encouraging messages regarding my finishing Tech, the highest in my class.. just 3 days before his accident.. so was bloody nice to be able to look him in the eye, & shake the mans hand!! :Punk:

Speedygirl has been doing a FABULOUS job of looking after John & his family.. & I take my bloody helmet off to her for what she is doing!!! :first: you go girl!!! :Punk:

I've managed to download my 200 odd  photos that I took over my trip... will try & get some up here soon! I did the Lindis 3 times last week.. Tues, Sat & Sun!!! tis a beeeeutiful piece of road!!

Enjoy your holiday John & big hug to Mrs O/R!!! Thanks heaps for having me to stay!! Was thoroughly enjoyable!!! :2thumbsup

Hi guys, had a hell of a week here and am finally getting back with a couple of photos which don't repeat everything already here.
I've been having the odd quick peak at this thread and there are some great photos especially Jen's set of individuals + Bike. Sounds like most of you guys have been doing what I've also been doing all week - smiling about last weekend and recounting the adventure to anyone who wanted to listen.

As has been noted SD and I did our duty and made sure everyone was escorted safely to bed, by this time the birds were also making some funny noises outside!!!. My apologies to Speedy and MyGSXF in the next door room - I do have a little device to stop me from snoring but in the 5 minute lead SD got on me he was already sound asleep and well into the full symphony in ZZZ major, so I didn't bother putting it in. Anyway speedy you'd already had more sleep by that point than we got for the rest of the night anyway!!!!

Next morning lets just say that an extra 3 hrs by heading off in the wrong direction was a bit more than SD & I could have coped with - I got home about 5pm after a leisurely cruise and a few caffiene stops.

The funniest part of our trip was shortly after we left. WE headed back to Otematata and then headed up over the Benmore dam. Just as we came onto the dam there's the bloody bus parked there that had just disgorged a load of Japanese tourists who were wondering all over the road doing what they do best - taking photos.
Well SD and I pull up beside each other just beside the bus door. These Jappas turn around and you could see their jaws drop when they take a look at the masked man - but before you could say fuck me with a feather duster suddenly there's this rush of Japanese women towards us all wanting to get photographed draped over or snuggled up to these two bikers!!!!! Annoyed now I didn't get them to take one with us and them on my camera!
I was a nice cruise over the dam and down the other side of the LAke, coffee at Duntroon, then down through the limestone country via Ngapara, across the main road and out to kakanui, gentle ride through the Trotters Gorge and then cruised home on SH1 until I turned off onto SH8 for the last final blast through the Manuka Gorge which always gets me home with a smile on my face. We did strike some horrendous winds for a while South from Dunedin which was tossing both of us around a lot more than I've experienced for a while, but I guess thats just part of riding. I wondered whether that wind moved further North and caught the later riders heading back to Dunedin before they got home?? - didn't see any mention anywhere (Phaedrus, BigJ, Woodyram rider????)
Fantastic weekend, and many thanks to all of you who helped in so many ways from cooking, cleaning dishes, sweeping and yes even a little MOPPING.
The $5 collected bought 3 boxes of beer and as no one touched the third one we took that up to give to the managers as well and there was some frozen meat packs left behind which I stuck in their fridge. Hopefully we'll be able to use the place again - although with all the hits this thread is taking the venue might not be big enough and I think the ground down near the lake is a bit rocky/stony for comfortable tenting. keep a look out for other options, preferably something well away from anyone else - maybe a school camp type venue??, either that or the first 20 to register get a bed and the rest get some floor.
The photos (hopefully in the right order)
Top of the Lindis - taken by a friendly cyclist - all the SOuthern contingent except IDB
SD - if anyone has a better pic I'd like to see it - title could be "even the devil struggles with technology)
Top of Benmore Dam - after the runin with the Jappa's
