Sorry but I have a question and don't recall this being discussed (I'll go and have another read) - where are we going to have a few beers and a feed? For me that kind of dictates where to spend the night.

dangerous
20th October 2006, 23:06
Well if staying in Otematata... Otematata pub and if staying in Twizel... Twizel pub.:scooter:

Otematata is my pick. (but also quite happy to go with the masses)

I asked because Rashika has already that you guys have a place already organised in Twizel. I was a little confused

I'm with the shearers quarters, mainly 'cos it means we'll all be together at once in the same place for the night = better socialising!!  :niceone:

Hey, it would be nice if all these stray North Island voters were actually coming down here that week end.

I was planning on being up there at the NI Coast to Coast for that w/e. :thud:

I am going to cancel that in preference to attending the South Island KB get together. (where ever it is going to be) :first:

I haven't voted yet, I will go with the flow on this one. The shearers quarters (suggested so far) are just 6km down or 7km up the road. :spudwhat:

I can walk from home to all the accommodation and drinking holes at Otematata. :drinknsin

Or even to the shearers quarters for that matter. (hardly worth starting my bike) :shit:

See you all there, one way or another! :done: Cheers John.

I was giving serious consideration to coming down until you mentioned that. I have been trying to do that Coast to Coast for the last 2 years but other things have got in the way each time. Still, sorely tempted to come south.
Hmm, will stew on it a bit longer....

Cheers John. Know the roads down there reasonably well, I service equipment at Tasman Aero, Tara Hills, Qn, Nv, Dn, Wanaka etc - was working in Gore last week. Trouble is I am normally in a van or rental car! Would love to get the Tiger down there, its sort of what I had in mind when I bought it.

The shearers quarters sound like a goer to base the socialising around - however I have contacts in Twizel who I haven't seen for a bit. But as the distances are not great will plan on appearing at the Otemawhatever venue if that is agreed and (assuming under-sauced) stay in Twizel.

But then if I catch up with my friends at some other time ... can I vote for the shearers site also? Mmmm lanolin

You could always take on us on a little adventure ride on the Saturday afternoon. There's got to be some nice gentle trails around Lakes Benmore or Aviemore to killl an hour or two? I'm sure Ruralman would be keen too.

Silage, you'd better and come and stay with us as I want to hear about your India trip.

Its been suggested on the other thread that the Otematata pub could be the go... sounds good to me as a back up choice to the shearers quarters which I'll vote on, but reckon the pubs the go. :scooter: ohh now she whom I never obey is saying if a pub... then why not the Twizel pub closser to Mt Cook for Sunday.

It is not the Otematata Lakes hotel where you had the Guzzi ride in Dangerous, it was the Otematata Country Inn but wait until Ruralman posts in again, we went and checked out the shearers quarters last night, should be sweet. Cheers John.

Heap of pics here of the shearers quarters, inlcuding the beds (2 or 3 in most rooms), social room, showers (the multi set up for the blokes and the "nice" ones for the ladies (these usually reserved for the shearer's cook), the track in, the mailbox on the road side to look out for and the rapid number on the entrance. and a photo looking down to the lake (Aviemore) about 150m away. Depends a bit what Sunday is like for the proposed ride to Mt Cook - the best view of Cook I reckon is from the top of the Haka Pass if the day is right. Maybe the adventure bikes could go that way and the roadies go the other way.
If the day isn't much good for that then there are plenty of good rides on the seal that could keep the group together for a little while before people start heading home - for example the loop ride over Benmore, down the other side then back via the Aviemore dam - or one of the loops round the fossil trails near Duntroon.
If there are some riders staying at Twizel then it would be useful to have a phone number for them - if they can't see Cook it isn't worth going that way.

26th October 2006, 08:03

I reckon this is possibly turning into a bloody good weekend...when we actually make up our minds about where to have it :innocent: :Punk:

I reckon this is possibly turning into a bloody good weekend...when we actually make up our minds about where to have it :innocent: :Punk:

I reckon you are absolutely right - we'll have the happy sheep shaggers gathering and the upmarket poufdahs will be up the road wishing they were with us!!!!!!!!!!!!! Heaps of riding options depending on how Sunday shapes up and what mood you're in.
The only thing we haven't sort of got covered is something that can make loud music - any ideas?? - and no that isn't an invitation for Harley, Buell or Ducati owners to let us listen to their throbbing engines all bloody night!! (much as I like the sound of all of these)

Yeah the ride to Cook would need to be a great day 'cos the ride itself is pretty boring after Omararama (unless you're going on the adventure ride through Black Forest and the Haka Pass) - lots of long straights and perilous without a good radar detector.

I have confirmed with the manager that we will definitley use the Shearers Quarters based on responses so far - if that changes later on it won't matter too much as far as they are concerned. So take it that a least some of the group, probably most, will be staying at Rugged ridges shearers quarters.

When I was working I used to travel a lot between Otematata and Christchurch airport.
Filling up with gas and setting the trip meter at each end used to be 333km either way.
That is up through the McKenzie country or down through Waimate and up the East Coast.
I wont mention time because I always obeyed the law! :innocent:
Some people like to take the (time) shortcut and some like to just doddle along stopping here and there.
Generally about four hours to or from Christchurch depending on traffic etc.
Quicker on a bike just by being able to thread through the traffic. Cheers John.

How about we (including the Dunedin riders) meet at lawrence at 10-10:30, then to Alexandra for lunch and meet up with Jantar and the Q'town/Arrowtown `crew, then from there it will be an easy couple of hours over to Otematata with plenty of time to get settled in and stocked up (or even for a local ride if the mood takes you).
Come home via North Otago depending maybe on if we've gone up to Cook.

No, she can't even get down to the local supermarket now, in a very bad car accident, broken bones from asshole to breakfast time. the movement just in the car alone is too much for her now. she loved on the bike too. the injurys she got will only get worse, not better. so, as you can imagine i enjoy my laughs on K.B. i don't get a hell of a lot these days...

And people say bikes are dangerous!!. Thats a bucket of bad luck mate and I hope things do eventually get better rather than worse. Hopefully she'll encourage you to take a few trips even though she can't go - its terrible when an accident like this completely ruins things for both partners, even though both have to make some changes and in your case no doubt she needs you to help a fair bit.

I took a rather spectacular tumble yesterday at one of the best and most challenging trail rides I've done - saved by a very good dirt bike body armour vest. I suspect without it not only wouldn't I have not finished the ride but I might have been stretchered out.

The shearers 1/4s have beds for at least 20 plus the lounge area could cope with a bit of an overflow on sofas etc so I doubt we'll run out of room, plus there are a few staying at Twizel (you'll regret you didn't join us!) and at least one staying with Oldrider.
The ones I assume are staying at the quarters are : me, SD (2), Jantar (2), Dangerous, rashika, phaedrus, Mr Unsensible,98TLS, Woodybee, - there were a few others who responded to the survey - please reply to this or PM me to confirm and the same for anyone else not on that list who wants to come.
The other thing is - is there anyone able to bring something that can play a few CD's or amp up an MP3 player? Always good to have some music which can be in the foreground or background depending on the night.
Oldrider is going to take his gas bottle up to hook into the BBQ - I'll chuck a bag of sausages or chops or both out of my freezer and into my bag to thaw out on the way up. So bring something for breakfast and we can get the other bits up there. We'll need to do a wee collection to pay for a box of beer for the manager but with the numbers coming that won't add up to much.

Hi everyone, I might put this up as a separate thread so it gets noticed better but the message is - I've just had a call from the manager of the Station we're staying at and they are getting a bit pissed off with people coming in, looking around the shearers quarters without asking, ringing or making any effort to seek permission first. They seem to think it is people associated with this weekend trip of ours - so PLEASE keep out of there or if you absolutely have to go and look either PM me first so I can help T it up or contact the manager directly before you get there.
There is some risk if this continues we might lose the use of the place so please pass this on to any one you know who might have been intending to just "pop in" on their way past.
Thanks
Bruce

Just to clarify, are we staying in the accomodation area there, cabins etc? So we dont need to take tents etc? We need to provide our own food and drinkies though? We're staying in a shearers quarters with mutliple bunkrooms with about 3 beds in each - beds for at least 20. Any overflow can park on the floor in the big lounge. Bring a self inflating mattress if you're worried.
There is a good local pub and restaurant, presume theres a store. WE'll get stuff like milk etc locally. We have the BBQ stoked up on Sat night.

At this stage the plan for Dunedin Sth riders is to meet at Lawrence (Wild Walnut cafe') at 10-10:30 at then cruise up to Alex for Lunch. Leave from the monument at around 1-1:30, over the Lindis etc.
I want to call in and invite the manager down to have a beer with us, and once we all get to the Shearers quarters we'll need a quick collection to buy some beer to cover the use of the place.
Lets hope the weather does its bit.
For anyone coming in from the Oamaru end, be aware you won't get fuel until Kurow (I very nearly ran out going up there last time to find this out!!). We'll probably fill up at Omarama.

Unless pushing things a bit I get over 300km from a tank so not a problem for me. If we fill at Omarama it gives us all the options the next day as to where to go depending on weather, hangover, departure time, other committments.........
O'R'r has a cunning plan if the weather turns to crap (and no, not on gravel roads so your chrome is safe OK!!).

My take on the weather forecast for later in the week is that Friday is going to be very wet and horrible and Sat will be much better with Sth WEsters and occasional showers which probably means the SH8 route will be the best, the coastal route the worst and the middlemarch one somewhere in between depending on how low the cloud is. So it looks like Lawrence then.

On a budget this time Rashika - bringing a drop of Pepe instead of Jose, plus a drop of Passport "for emergencies".

One more sleep to go - and ride safely everybody.

I probably won't get away until 4ish so will have to meet everyone up there.

Looking in the Central Otago rag today and here's this competition which could win you a trip to Australia - how far can you spit a cherry stone????
yep you get 3 cherries, chew the flesh and then use all you've got to spit that sucker as far as you can!!!!!
Well I'm not suggesting we go to Cromwell for this competition - BUT - it would seem like a superb competition for a bunch of half cut bikers, stuck in the middle of nowhere and being very creative about their entertainment!!

SOOOOOO - given the price of cherries at the moment - I will pick up a bag of cherries on the way but if anyone else happens to go past a fruit stand then grab a few more eh.

Fortunately I think we've got at least one nurse coming in case someone inhales rather than exhales and gets a bloody stone stuck down they're throat - note to self - practise the Heinrich manoevre or whatever its bloody called when you crush someones ribs from behind!!!

The anticipation is rising - see ya all tommorrow:done: :Punk:

Cal and I arrived Dunedin at 6 with no probs whatever. No wet at all anywhere yeehar. No issues on the road except for the car that moved across the middle line toward Cal in the middle of a bridge :gob: Then there was the light green falcon ute (had trailed us for 20km and thought it might have been a mufti, but no) that cruised up the steeper parts of the motorway at 160. No how would we know that

Most likely we will catch up with Scummdog and Ruralman at Lawrence tomorrow - was it 10am?
