Well Nasty & I (and a bunch of others I imagine) will be at Manfield for Round 4 of the Nationals. That would be a most excellent ride for a TCSMR group ... up to Fielding, get there about 1 for lunch, a couple of hours race-viewing and back home again.
I've been doing a bit of road exploring, being a hater of State Highways, this would be a great route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=8114340335201268847,-40.937207,175.650995%3B10274250877368370569,-40.896527,175.649722%3B3297504139405654876,-40.766994,175.709693%3B36923040777345673,-40.712191,175.721468%3B17738643052311228794,-40.517130,175.752980%3B11132878902830077221,-40.496848,175.716531%3B5176115907608289546,-40.284350,175.633470&saddr=Brown+Owl&daddr=Ngaumutawa+Rd+%40-40.937207,+175.650995+to:Loop+Line+%40-40.896527,+175.649722+to:Opaki+Kaiparoro+Rd+%40-40.766994,+175.709693+to:Bowen+Rd+%40-40.712191,+175.721468+to:Eketahuna+to:Tutaekara+Rd +%40-40.517130,+175.752980+to:Nikau+Rd+%40-40.496848,+175.716531+to:-40.241536,175.67276+to:Feilding&mra=dme&mrcr=5&mrsp=8&sz=12&via=6,7,8&sll=-40.266952,175.66452&sspn=0.193072,0.31929&ie=UTF8&z=12). Distance 189km.
By comparison if you did go straight there via SH2, 178km. Or worse, via SH1, 137km.

The weather forecast isn't encouraging for a ride any where.

No one else at Rimutex at 1030 so went for a solo ride over Haywards, around the estuary and back. No rain, minimal traffic, well worth the effort.

Wellington Sunday
Max: 23°C Min: 12°C
(Day) (Overnight)
Becoming fine. Northwest easing. Late rain, southerly.
Same for Paraparaumu. Masterton "Showers early morning and night." I'm thinking over the Haywards, right around the estuary, Paekakariki hill then coffee/lunch in Raumati/Pram. Cruisy pace - newbie friendly.
So who's up for a ride tomorrow?

Be prepared for a gravel road, its ok just take it easy on the downhill part , you'll know it when you see it .

Good idea, you should come up as part of the ride. If you did the Coastline from the Oriental Bay right around to the Red Rocks gate, you can end up coming back over Brooklyn. It's a surprising distance and from Brooklyn you could carry on the coast theme by going Karori, Makara, Ohariu and back to civilisation at J'ville.
You go up to the Brooklyn Wind Turbine and the road to the buckets is the gate at the end. The chain just lifts off.

Yeppers just sing a mantra to yourself as you go down " ... no front brake, no front brake, no front brake ...

Sounds good. There's more info on the buckets in this thread. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=68363) A run round the coastline is a great slower ride for newbies (lots of 50/70kph zones). Swing past the windmill then anyone keen to brave the gravel can carry on. Karori-Jville is a good idea but we'll see who's keen once at the windmill.
How about meeting at BP near Te Papa rather than us townies heading out and back to Rimutex?

Karori to johnsonville is a wonderful ride ... so it right there is a good cafe at the half way point!! On that road there was only a tiny part of gravel ages ago .. and its a truely lovely spin!!

I agree but it's a long way around the bays and some may have had enough
I was out that way a month ago and there were three short gravel stretches where the road surface was being fixed up. Easily seen well before you get to them so no real issues.

I'll be at Rimutex. Depart sharply by 1030 to swing past BP Te Papa around 11am. Around the bays should have us at Brooklyn a little before noon for the bucket fans. Continue on to the cafe at Karori Beach for a coffee/lunch if it's open. Then home via the back road to Johnsonville.

Sounds great ... we will be staying at the buckets as I am racing one this year ... but will see you to enjoy the first portion of the ride!!

Great company this morning, shitty route, top destination. Who was the wanker that proposed we ride around the bays? Gale force winds out to Shelley Bay, closed roads for the cycle race and Sunday f**g drivers for the rest of it. Oh well.
Great company this morning from Mowgli (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=14850), Canterbury (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=15631), 325Rocket (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=9399), Nasty (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=3853) and myself (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=9129). Thanks team for the company and the fun, sorry that all the wind and cars meant we never really go into any kind of rythym and all we ended up with was an 80km ride at sub-50K speeds :) Oh well, it looked good on paper didn't it.
It was all made better by the destination though. It was the first buckket meeting of the year and so we ended our ride behind the Brooklyn wind turbine/Karori Santuary to see a full muster of buckets, riders, newbies and dreamers.
Great fun and thanks to Skunk (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=2010), Wasp (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=4167), Sully60 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=12854) and AJturbo (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=81) for trusting their bikes to us for a ride in the newbies session - you guys rock!
