Were there inappropriate passing manoeuvres??
I know how sensitive you Cantabrians are to misuse of your roads.

Had a lot of fun at the PP. Good to put faces to names. Had fun in the sun in the Southern Riviera, and it was great to wake to the sound of the sea.

Big thanks to ScumDog & Chrissie for the hospitality on the way down.

Also thanks to our caterers Mutley and Virago. The B&E pie was great and NH is still talking about the bikkies and coffee. Sorry we didn't go for a ride but it was fun talking in the sun - but I seem a bit pink today :)

So the gear is all put away, and I have started making lists of what to take next time :)

Well, what a wekend!!

First the Canterbury rabble arrive at Chez Scumdog from all directions and promptly trash my otherwise glowing reputation for 'sensible' posts on KB:shutup:

The we all sat around and downed a days national production of alcamahol ex Mexico and sorted a shitload of the worlds problems, luckily idb arrive relatively late and being more soberer than some here :innocent: was sent to local 7-11 to aquire more alcamahol to keep things going.

Much hilarity was had by all (a lot at my expense I might add!) and eventually we lurched off to our respective beds.

Next day started with me waking beside CB with my t-shirt and one sock still on and my sneakers beside the bed still done up.

But the day just got better - brilliant sunshine as befitting the Riviera of the Souths reputation.

Everybody got up, had some brekky and re-packed bikes in a stately manner and some headed off to the deep south to catch up with Rashikas auntie and return via the Catlins Coastal Route.

The rest headed to the PP site and set up the nucleus of Camp KB (Camp runnamuck more like it I'd say) where I found the tent I'd packed was one CB & I had never seen before! Luckily it was all there even if a tad less palatial than the usual portable Chez Scumdog. (We think it MAY actually belong to CBs younger son)

After catching up with people nice to see Sword (who was hurt in an off caused by an ignorant car-driver last PP) back on the bike we all headed off on the organised ride, mighty impresive bikes left Kaka Point for the first stop at Garvan for a beer/wine whatever and some BBQ tucker (best meat patties I've ever had) .

Nuff for now, more later.

Finally arived home after a great weekend at the PP.
Great to meet a few more of the KBers. The main problem with the rally is it is only an houor from home so as soon as we off loaded the gear at home we were away for the rest of the day.

Will be back next year with bells on. Thanks to the organisers for a great weekend :scooter:

I can only reiterate the words of the others at the PP. It was great to catch up with those I had met before and to meet some whom I had not met before.
Great social ride yesterday. The Garvan sure serves up a mean feed!

My auntie Clair had a grand old time and maybe soon she will take the plunge and actually POST on KB! But until that time I will just have to rark her up about it instead. This is the 'more later'

So after leaving Garvan (and after seeing xknuts blasting past in the Custard Square) we all cruised (except for the retard on the motard who overtook in real dumb-arsed locations) along SH1 to Crichton and then along Lakeside Road to Kai, by now the temparature must have been in the high teens .

Stopped there for another chin-wag'n'drink then of back through the Riviera of the South to the Rosie and then out via Kakapuaka where I managed to get the traffic lights right and didn't have to stop and on down to K.P for some fish'nichips, a red wine and on to the PP rally site - and holey-schamoley, where the hell did al those tents come from - and where was ours????

Biggest crowd ever at the PP so far - and a few with sun-burnt faces eh Xaria?

After forcing down some essential alcamahol we toddled off to the marquee for more and to listen to Shotgun, a real ripping band.

Got to see Ghost Bullet do some form of Guzzi two-step which culminates in lying on the ground saying 'wotappend'????

And Cb taking pics for her collection of mens butts and mens nipples?? (WTF is she thinking??)

And Hellboy suffering a total loss of speech - and co-ordination

And Dangerous held out to after midnight and risked being turned into a punpkin

And...well, ya get the picture things were getting a tad untidy.

I headed off after 2:30am and fell asleep after Shotgun finished at 3am, man those waves sounded loud all of a sudden.

Next morning at sparrow-fart people started emerging from cacoons of various colours and stood around - some looked like it was a bit of an ask to get their eyes to function.

For some reason evertbody stood around drinking coffee, yarning, slowly packing but the usual hectic packing and mass exodus did not happen, after the sun came out from behind the clouds over the sea paople got moving and more packing happened and by the time CB and I left at about 9:45 there was only about half the crowd there.

Washed the Tequila Sunrise (it was covered in salt spray after being parked on front of the KP jar-shop) and watched bikes of all sorts stream past, magic!

Top weekend, top weather, top company and top guests @ Chez Scumdog.

Roll on the Magpie Madness!!

Hey Dudes and Dudess's,

Had a shyte ride down in the dark and rain, but was cheered up and fed a fab soup, so felt fine then. Ta for idb to show me the way there, god I'm crap I would get lost walking home sometimes I swear.

Ka Ka point continues to be a very favourite place of mine in NZ, the coast to greet my weary eyes this morning was stunning, once I was able to focus.!! Finally fell out of my tent at about 1030, and by the time the tent was packed it was 1200! Made a couple of new mates, Tony and Michael who dragged me to the Ka Ka pub, they drank beer, I couldnt stand the smell of it, so drank a nice cuppa and we had scones with raspberry jam and cream, very civalised.

A german guy came in the pub and the landlord owns a german dog (4get the make), but the dude started to tell the mutt to sit and lie down in german, and frig me, it understood him and did just that very bizzare

Sorry if I woke some of you up with a drunken rendition to Kenny Rogers, The Gambler, at 5am!! I must learn the words to that, one day, seem to have this urge to sing out loud on the way back to the tent nowadays:blink:

Tried to pole dance, last night but some chick wouldn't:nono: let me as she said the tent would come down, (yeah don't think so), but did a mini pole dance anyway.

The jeans are in the wash, as the front of them are covered in mud, when i body boarded the grass after "Guns, sweet child", will I never grow up?:baby:

All in all, a fab fun time was had, the contained lit area with the fires are always a great way to keep everyone sociable.

So thanks to the organisers, a wonderful job was done, guys and girls.

Had a mare of a ride home, though, bike felt heavy, my arms nearly dropped off, I nearly forgot to put my feet down when I stopped:shit: it took forever to get home, must endeavour to not drink so much grog, or slow down, think I could handle the ride home better, me thinks.

Fab 2 cu all again, and my god Dangerous, well done you for staying up so late, even if you were getting chased round by me to get you to stay:clap:

Right thats all for now folks, really am totally knackered, still unpacking, and my bed and fluffy quilt is beckoning me to jump in and get some zzzzz's
roll on the next one

And to scummy and chris, you are the hosts with the most, ta very much:2thumbsup

Some of us took the opportunity to try out some different roads to get there. I arranged to meet with Old Rider and a few of the Canty riders at Dansys Pub for a pie and a pint at lunch time on friday. I left home a little earlier than needed as I wanted to try out a potential shortcut in the Naseby area. As a result I arrived at the pub about 40 minutes early, so I just headed on up to the top of Danseys Pass to wait.

I no sooner got there when it started to rain, and as I waited the rain just got heavier and colder. After 10 minutes or so I figured I'd head back down to lower altitudes where it was a bit warmer. However about 2 kms down from the top the rain stopped so I pulled up and looked back in time to see a headlight appear at the top of the pass. I waited and it wasn't long before Old Rider pulled up alongside. We both carried on to Danseys Pub to wait, and the rest arrived about 10 minutes later.

After a tasy lunch, OldRider left us to go via Hyde while an intrepid group of 5 went via Ranfurly and Paerau to the Old Dunstan Trail. It was raining as we approached the trail and although I have been over here many times in the dry, it was my first time so early in the season, and my first wet crossing on a clay surface. Things did not look good when TMG had a little lay down at the first gate, and he at least had semi dirt tyres. I had the road version of pirelli Scorpions, so I knew straight off that I could be in for a tough ride with not too much grip. As it turned out i needn't have worried, my tyres had absolutely no grip on that surface and were simply sliding all over the place. The others very kindly held back to help pick my bike up, but I just had to disappoint hem and stay upright all the way.

On the downhill section to Rocklands Station we found that the farmer had very considerately stopped any trafic coming towards us by still having the gate locked. It was supposed to have been opened on 1st September, but now we had a problem. It was a long way back and we didn't bring any bolt cutters with us. Fortunately after a bit of looking we found an alternate route which got us back on track. and up to Clarkes junction. (some-one else can tell the story of the magpie)

From there we took the Lee flat road to Mahinerangi and on to Ruralman's.

Friday slept in, had a root, shower, packed up, took a dump, and buggered of south with Rashika and Hellboy. Landed at scumdogs and was feed some rather nice homemade veg soup. Waited for the rest to arrive had a few beers etc, posted some shit in SD's profile then hit the sack.

Saturday slept in, had a root, shower, packed up, took a dump, and buggered of south with Rashika, MrS, Ghost Bullet and Hellboy. Well actualy between the dump and heading south IDB and myself swaped bikes and I took the 888 for a spin. Took the Clinton to Mataura rd, man the country down there is lovely the hills roll on and on, the sheep are fat wee fuckers and the paddocks look in better condition than a Fendolton front lawn, however the locals fly a little lower than I like, a farking Magpie wiped my fairing blade, mirror and me out, but man the prick of a thing shat its self secons before impact... all over the front of the bike and all over me.
Meet up with Clairsky and started the Catlins ride.

Man the Catlins are impressive, checked out the million plus old prehistoric forest out and a wicked beach in the middle of nowhere.
Arrived at the rally set up tent etc then hit shanks pony down to the pub for a feed.
The night went as all rally nights do all good shit and good company, altho Hellboy was getting rather untidy and GB was fast on his tail.

Sunday slept in, had a root, no shower, packed up, took a dump, and buggered of north with Rashika, Farque, GB, MrS and Hellboy. Great weather and awesome riding to Oamaru (hey 98tls was that you that buzzed us?) its all rather blah from there as we all know the canty plains are SOOOOO straight and riddled with coppers. stoped of at the checkered flag pub/cafe a bikers place in Rangitata. Got home had the shower I missed in the morning and quite conventantly retired for the evening.

ps: the mirror is repairable, the fairing blade $300+ and the shit 2hrs of scrubing.

Mike,

Thought that looked like your bike at the service station at Palmerston but the guy standing by it did not look like you, couldn't see you about so rode on through Trotters Gorge to visit Danny.

Couldn't see any sign of life at your place then so rode on home. :ride: John.

Home tonight after four awesome days of riding heaps of gravel & fantastic roads, all in great company.
Highlights were the Myers & Dansey's Passes, the Old Dunstan Trail, Ruralman's & the Princess's hospitality @ Lawerence and of course the PP Rally itself.
Late yesterday I found a neat "dry weather only" track in the hills near Gimmerburn & took some pics of a couple of old abandoned farm buildings, well hidden from general view.
I extended my trip to today, to include "work" calls @ Omakau, Alexandra, Cromwell, Tarras, Otamatata (incl coffee with Mr & Mrs Oldrider), Kurow & Waimate.
Will try to load some pics but the quality is dissapointing (I'll blame the camera).

Dansey Pass Pub where we met up with Jantar & Oldrider in the rain.

Timg on his Trannie & Jantar on his VStrom in the Dunstan Trail.
Prior to this point it was very slippery & Jantar showed great skills to keep the big bike upright, especially considering his tyres are quite 'mild'.
It's a desolate place & a long walk out if things go wrong. However can't wait to go back, in the other direction when it's actually 'officially open' & hopefully a bit dryer.

Shrek's fixation with food - even a pile of magpies on the southern side of the Dunstan trail weren't safe.
The 2nd pic just seems appropiate........

Some Maniototo pics, on my way home from the Pissed Penguin:
1) looking back from Gimmerburn accross the Maniototo Plain to Dansey's Pass in those far hills
2) Derelict cottage on exposed ridge, now home to an old ewe that missed the muster. The gateway strainer posts will last forever.
3) These abandoned stables still have tack gear & harnesses for draught horses etc, hanging in the stalls.

I think it was Scumdog who directed me here, thank you. In the article I have written I have put this: "A bikers’ website had very favourable comments about the Penguin Rally. One said, “Kaka Point continues to be a very favourite place of mine in NZ, the coast to greet my weary eyes this morning was stunning, once I was able to focus.!! All in all, a fab fun time was had, the contained lit area with the fires are always a great way to keep everyone sociable. So thanks to the organisers, a wonderful job was done, guys and girls.” Even more enthusiastically another said, “Awesome weather, Awesome Southern hospitality Awesome people, Awesome ride ... yeah my weekend was OK Best weekend I've had in ages, I look forward to a repeat next year."

I will send this soon, but if the people writing those comments object, please let me know before tomorrow (Wed) lunchtime and I will get it taken out.

Cheers and thanks muchly, Caro.

Great weather on the saturday and good company.

Glad those that partook enjoyed the nibbles. Sorry Virago and I didn't manage to catch up with all the CHCH crew. Hopefully we will meet a few more at the KB CHCH Birthday bash.
Thanks Delphinus for letting me hop up on your bike ( not that you had a choice anyway :shifty:). I felt like I was sitting on a giants chair. Just as well they build those bikes strong. It wasn't until I hopped down that it occurred to me that the sidestand could have sunk into the ground.

saw them sneak through this morning, though an hour or so later I saw a KBer heading North on a GS1200ss wasn't Silage either but it was sporting the KB sticker.

Thought I managed to sneak past your work without being seen Bill. I had gone down to Geraldine earlier for a tootle and to take some photos (have got a hearing opposing ECan's desire to stop us growing trees on our land in the area and was collecting "amunition"). On the way back through Geraldine at about 11 spied three bikes and associated rab (too few to be a rabble) consisting of FQ, GhostB and Sensible (the spanner party) so stopped for a chat. Was running a bit late for a lunch engagement on passing thru Rakaia.

Sounds like a beaut rally and one I still haven't done. Good weekend all round. It least I got to cover 300km on Friday am.

Sorry this will be long, but it will the last time I bother you. Here is what I wrote for the Clutha Leader (which came out on Thursday). I hope it is at least vaguely interesting for some of you. Cheers, Caro.

"Wilsher Bay near Kaka Point turned into a temporary flourishing town at the weekend when the annual Penguin Motor-Cycle Rally took place. Almost 700 bikers arrived from all over the South Island, as well as two people from Australia and one from Japan attending. Tents, bikes, a smattering of cars, music, marquees, fires and the sale of various goods, including tee-shirts, drinks, the Owaka Lions barbeque food, pop-corn and other snacks all combined to turn the normally deserted paddock into a pulsating mass of people and vehicles.

Held on the warmest day of the year so far, the rally takes people on country roads throughout Otago and Southland as the riders converge on Wilsher Bay. A cold sea breeze in the early evening of Saturday spoilt the balmy feel but a trio of fires and plenty of animated conversation more than made for that. Organiser Pete Davey said they had generally alsways been lucky with the weather. He gave a lot of credit to the Lions who run the bar and barbecue for the event and have about 30 members on hand to help. He said the Lions then donate some of their profits to a community in Kaka Point looking after the domain. “There is no council finance for the domain. We put in the power cables and lights oursleves and clean the toilets when needed.”

As well as an array of bikes, there were also three wheeled trikes. Yvonne Ross, from Gore, said her VW Trike was bought recently on Trade Me from a Timaru seller, and had proved a brilliant buy. “It was for my birthday and is quite a family thing. We can take the kids out on it.” She said they went on several South Island rallies and were married at the March Hare one near Waimate this year. The Penguin Rally she rated as casual and friendly and one of the larger ones held.

A bikers’ website had very favourable comments about the Penguin Rally. One said, “Kaka Point continues to be a very favourite place of mine in NZ, the coast to greet my weary eyes this morning was stunning, once I was able to focus.!! All in all, a fab fun time was had, the contained lit area with the fires are always a great way to keep everyone sociable. So thanks to the organisers, a wonderful job was done, guys and girls.” Even more enthusiastically another said, “Awesome weather, Awesome Southern hospitality Awesome people, Awesome ride ... yeah my weekend was OK Best weekend I've had in ages, I look forward to a repeat next year.

Mr Davey said Peter Duff of Balclutha made a DVD of the event which will be available for sale in three weeks’ time. Those interested can phone him on 418 0882."

The PP badge is identical except colour to last years model. Brandwell Moller make an amazing range of styles-How much money do you have?
With a bit of thought a badge can be made very special.

Oh dear, every time I spell Willsher Bay I have to look it up, and everywhere you look has a different spelling. However as the original Willsher had 2 'l's or else was Wiltshire, you seem to be right. Sorry. Maybe this will help me remember next time.

You'll have to get used to it now that you're in the fold I'm afraid A.
It can get ugly but you can always fall back on the secure knowledge that you're right and 'they' know nothing.

Well, just saw the DVD of the PP, good shit!

Footage of bikes cruising around bends, along straights and through town, of bikes passing the camera vehicle, of bikers standing around at the site, Garvan and Kai.

Shots of inside the marquee with the bands and drunks, pics of the site with the tents going up, all done to suitable music.

Only negative was some filming was done into the sun and detail has been lost, only outlines can be seen at times.

Spotted: Free2be, NightHawk and Xaria, Shrek, XKnuts, myself and CB, Ruralman and 'friend' etc, some just fleeting glimpses, others longer footage.

The last bit with still pics and music was A1:first:

$35 from Gallery Giftworld in Balclutha

I've also got the DVD - he's made a good job of it - Oldrider, I definitely saw you on your bike a couple of times and we all know you look better with that helmet on anyway:laugh:

Anyone wanting a copy that won't be in Balclutha you can email Peter Duff on pcduff@kol.co.nz and organize it that way.

Even better looking with a tinted visor, damn it!

The cameraman wanted the radiance of the Tiger present to enhance the lighting!

Is there a new steed gracing the rural shed yet? :ride:

One that purrrs and growls assertively, yet in softly sensuous tones! :blip: (No not princess Fiona, a bloody Tiger!) Cheers John.

He's being very coy with his subtle wee hints eh? Almost had us convinced he was looking at BMW's  at the PP. & I'm sure Princess Fi would be drop dead gorgeous in a tiger suit :devil2: Grrrrrr

I actually held Ruralmans "private thing" with my own hands yesterday! :o

I am sworn to secrecy, as you can well imagine

All I will say is, that it was big, black and throbbed with excitement, my knees turned to jelly as I held it firmly upright! :sweatdrop

I guess we all have secret moments that we cherish in our lives. Cheers John.

Not you too - had Shrek drooling over it the day before:bash: I'm flying up to get it on Monday, so any more drooling will have to be done down here. You have a way with words my friend - no wonder that lady of yours always has a look of impending excitement!!!
