just been on email hassling brother!! Poor guy is trying to ensure she arrives in tip top condition and I just keep asking 'But When'. I am in Auz from 10th july for 2 months so hope she will be waiting for me when I get back. After saturday I am even more keen to get going.
Maybe a few hassles with immigration so will try get UK KBer's details and find out what they think. You and Ali met some the other weekend didnt you?
Hope first day back OK!!
IMO there is better value for money out there.
this is the blade im talking about http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=104210202
seems like decent value for money considering age and kms?? what would be better value in your opinion?
finally sat on an RF today (couldnt ride it tho) seat is like a sofa! thats a plus, would be great for pillion! weight was not bad, lighter than I expected....this particular bike was a bit rough round the edges tho (the black one in palmy)

dont surposed you noticed it is bright yellow?
DHunt will be pleased.
Actually looks damn good for the money. Id buy that over the RF.
You really should be out riding these bikes rather than just sitting on them though. Go back to the RF and ask if you can test ride it sunday from about 10am to 6pm.................

i thought you might like that cbr....not shabby at all....pity its in fekkin aucks!
couldnt test ride the rf, owner was away, neighbour didnt have keys - i just wanted to see what sort of condition it was in anyway, turns out it's not bad but not exactly good either - not worth 4500 imo, maybe 3600ish but it just isn't tidy enough really and front tyre was in the same condition as yours...

I'm at home today recovering from a flu which hit me on Sunday so I thought I'd add another small report on my 1000 miler.
By the end of last week I'd managed to clock up over 900 miles, most of it done within a week of getting my new bike. I'd passed most of the critical milage/rpm limititations, meaning that I was no longer limited to the lower rpm restrictions.
On the Friday, I only had about 40 miles to go before the big 1000, so on Saturday Sarahtvet and I decided to go for a quick jaunt up over the track and thereabouts to finally finish it off.
So off we went, just enjoying the bike, and it was also a good chance to introduce Sarah to the bloody fantastic New Zealand roads. Sarah being a new arrival to NZ and all:yes:
So team Britain passed through Pahiatua and headed north where the miles rapidly counted down (or up) towards the 1000. Right outside, you guessed it, the Tui Brewery:yes:
Ignoring the beauties frolicking in the river we decided to forgo infiltrating the main compound to nick a few crates, and opted instead to take a celebratory pic of an equally beautiful sight - the bike that is

That was a great ride on Sunday merv, I'm still buzzing and I'm sure others are too:yes:
The manual makes no mention of a metric option although I believe that it can be done via the EMS. I like the imperial readouts and am quite used to it having driven all over Britain and the US. And it somehow makes the whole experience more 'British' which is fitting I reckon.
Now shes done 1000 miles youll have to trade up for a new one then :gob:
Actually James, I think a Harley would look good in the shed about now. That would help keep the miles down and save on maintenance costs eh:yes: Better not tho, I'm already way out of my financial comfort zone as it is lol.
Really though, the amount of attention the Daytona attracts has been a real eye opener. I've had so many people stop to admire her, been whistled at by girls in the street, had small children pulling their parents towards her, and lot's of guys reminincing about their biking days

Delivery expected next friday - cowboyz wanted to jump on the 9 and head for chch after work today and ride them back up tomorrow
I seriously considered this option (as ya do)
probably would have worked out about $100 more expensive than shipping but we would get a mighty ride....
the kicker was that i dont finish work til 5:30 and the last ferry out tonight is 6:15 so given i need to go get my gear we'd be looking at averaging about 240km/h to catch the ferry which is probably over cooking it a bit
altho if anyone/anything can do it, it would be cowboyz on the kwaka!!

Mission acomplished managed to get to the ferry terminal in time to see the boat docking and Yod with the biggest smile ever Nice bike Yod Well done
It pissed down from Paraparaumu all the way there and back to about Levin where it slowed for a bit, Met 86, Sarah and chancey down there and rode back with them A bit of fun coming out of Welly to find the road covered in water, both lanes had water propell itself down my boot somehow, not a nice feeling at all
Nice to have cowboyz riding at a cruiser pace due to his dodgy front tyre and the wet roads
Good luck with the op tomorrow Alister let us know how you get on
Wow, what can I say - I wasn't expecting anybody to turn up in wellies in that weather and just about everybody was there!!
came off the boat in the pissing rain....hmmmm....whos that idiot waving his arms around the place? meanie...wha...?!?!? couldn't believe me eyes....cowboyz was there too, 86, chanceyy and sarahtvet showed up about 10 minutes later

Well, another damn fine Ashurst ride, I don't think there's ever been a bad one! This was great because it was so spontaneous. I'd had to work today, but due to some fortunate circumstances I managed to finish in time to convince Chanceyy to debut on one of the gixxers (took all of two seconds too lol). So with Sarah as pillion we headed down to Wellie to meet up with the rest of the crew.
Had a nice uneventful trip down with Chanceyy taking to the gixxer like a fish to water. The rain held off until Paekoc when it really started to pour and at the bottom of the Gorge the first of it got through both sets of gloves. In the failing light and heavy rain we made out way to the ferry terminal and quickly spotted the team and Yod's new bike. Very nice! Well done Jonno!
So a quick turnaround and with the rain finding a new intensity, it was back up the line with a couple of quick stops and head counts. All accounted for, then back into Palmie.
Thanks guys for another great ride, and well done Yod! Looking forward to seeing you out there on that fine machine soon. Pics soon
I'm into hospital tomorrow for a long overdue operation so won't be riding for six weeks or so. I'll miss it, but it must be done.

good day out. I brought a new tyre last week and decided I didnt have time to put it onand it didnt matter cause there was no riding this weekend. I should have known better.
On the up side it was a fun trip. Wet as a wet thing but nothing a nice warm shower couldnt fix.
Nice bike Yod. Cant beleive the deal you got on it but thats what patience brings.
Cheers

Thanks for posting the pics Sarah I dont bring my camera out on the bike now after the last one got a little wet I need to get a waterproof one
Great ride even in the rain, reminded me of our final leg of the four points from Hohoura to PN it rained the wohole trip 13 hours
Thought I better give you a taste of the south island run....
Mum let the dog into my room at 7:15am - nice way to start the day...a paw in the face!
Got to the bike shop sunday morning and there she was, parked outside, gleaming in the crisp canterbury morning sun....adrenaline was starting to pump already....
decided my new leathers were too big and bulky to strap on the back with the rest of the gear as well, even though I'd stopped to get an extra stretchie so I put those back in mum's car to be shipped at a later date
the couple at Just Motorcycles were in the process of gassing me up and we discovered the tank lid is a complete pain to open, they rang the previous owner and he gave us some useful advice, but it's a thumb-breaking mission!!
finally i'm packed and ready to roll - turned her over with some choke, she starts first pop (thats promising) and hums away....hmmm....big inline four, bit of a change from the V4
see ya mum, :bye: thanks for everything, and I'm off! once she was warmed up i started playing with the power....there's plenty! I noticed she really doesnt feel much heavier then the viffer even though there's apparently about a 45kg difference, and the seating position is very similar too. Heading out towards the northern motorway in an 80km zone and got passed by a boy racer in a skyline who seemed to think the speed limit was 130 and you weren't supposed to go below it, not bothering with you today sonny.....
filled up at a kaiapoi gas station where the chap thought he knew me and said "didn't you used to have a red bike?" spooky....
finally open road and this thing eats it, efofrtlessly up to 150km/h.... OOOPS:shit: back off back off - and that was the theme for the first 100km or so...
getting a sore left toe from trying to kick a 5 speed into 6th all the time - was still doing it on the last stretch into palmy....
sunny weather pretty much the whole way up the coast - road was mostly dry but plenty of wet patches in the sheltered spots - still getting used to the bike, it felt easy enough to manouevre....at low speeds it wanted to drop into the corners more, at open road speeds you put it where you want it and it does what it's told. Remembered why most canterbury bikers crash - from falling asleep....hmm.....yet another long straight here, better see what she's capable of (as I said to Meanie when I got to wellies, be rude not to:innocent:)....still stable and riding true at 'higher' speeds, good to know....
as i was approaching cheviot I realised I didn't know what my tyres/chain were like, or even what my reg no was! so i pulled over for a few minutes, stretched the legs and just walked around the bike looking at it....yes, yod likes....
a few more kms up the road and we started clmbing towards the hundalees and i could feel the temperature drop, spotted the "Windey Roads Next 12km" sign....oh life is good isnt it....
ok....there's those extra kilos, she flicks side to side very nicely tho, i've read the twin spar frame makes them very balanced and stable and handle well and now i'm a believer, very controllable, although i was taking it pretty easy as the uphill section was still very wet, once i came off the hill the roads were better and i thundered up towards kaikoura in the sun
gassed up and checked the time...hmm, ok it had taken be around 2 hours to cover 185kms from chch, reasonable average....problem was it was 11:08 and I now had 67 minutes to do 160km and make check in time in picton at 12:15....
now lets see....if you needed to average 150km/h up the east coast highway in the south island of new zealand, what would your vehicle of choice be? a large displacement sports motorcycle perchance? what a coincidence! i just happen to have one at my disposal:lol:
roads were 90% dry north of kaikoura as I "freed the horses" - I decided it was probably wise to keep her under 140km - if i had to get caught i wanted to at least keep my licence....(although I may have slipped up a couple of times), and there was no need to be there bang on 12:15....
What a ride, lots of fast sweepers undulating up and down hills and a few twisties before dropping down towards blenheim - no traffic to speak the whole way from chch....only problem was my hips were starting to cramp up a bit and I couldnt stop, so it was a case of standing on the bike everytime i had to slow for a town, managed to get off the bike for a few minutes at a red light at the Seddon bridge which is a long one way setup with lights so got a bit of relief there:shutup:
found a bit of drizzle about 10km out of picton along with a lot more traffic heading for the ferry but nothing really (compared to what was waiting for me in wellies!!) turned up at the check in about 12:30ish so i'd made good time and I rode straight on and strapped her in myself for the crossing
what a way to get to know your new bike!!
thanks to dogs for all the road updates and reminding me it would be a good idea to take some tie downs for the ferry, and thanks for the offers to help me get the bike up to the north island too mate - will ctach up when you get back :niceone:
and thanks to the rest of you lot who showed up in wellies to meet me as i came off the ferry....couldn't believe me eyes when i spotted meanie and cowboyz waiting there in the pissing rain. Was grinning from ear to ear...then cowboyz says 86 and the others will be here soon too. That was just too nice....awesome ride back...wicked adventure....top weekend all in all

Out of surgery and recovering as we speak so he will be back in action in 6-8 weeks.
Good job I am leaving the country for a bit, might be in trouble for this level of info!!!

first off Al good .. just got back fr hospital & he is looking great .. & having excellent care :)
sorry guys it is a bit of a novel ...
Al's bikes over the last few days now my arm has recovered from yesterday & I can actually think a few coherent thoughts ..
Riding the trumpy on Friday .. of course this was only a few ks all up (thought I better stop stressing Alistair out) but she felt fantastic .. very light, smooth, responsive & very comfortable position on the bike .. now I have something to compare it with ..
the Gixxer .. I dunna think it took 2 seconds to convince me to ride it yesterday to wellywood to met Yod off the ferry, I am sure when Al called I said fark yes instantly .. so maybe 05 seconds to convince me ..
Anyhow did not want an audience for my first wee ride .. (just in case I made an ass of myself - sorry Sarah didn't need the pictorial evidence) so Al & I ventured for a wee ride round the block & went to gas up .. came back & got the weather report from Cowboyz that the weather in wellywood was pissing down ..
all geared up & ready to go .. apart from the wee ride on Friday this is the biggest road bike I have ridden .. & prob took all of 5 or so ks before I was sitting on 120 ks on the back roads outta palmy ... novel idea having a speedo :innocent:
Still backed off the corners & played with counter steering but all in all felt good .. only stalled it twice on the ride down .. but was not a major ..
the very forward position on the bike I was not sure that my stuffed back would handle (thanks to 800kgs of horse standing on me when i was 15 after a fall) however the lower back pain did not evenuate .. more a bit of burning between shoulder blades keeping head up ..
have never ridden in such poor light with driving rain before .. & on a new bike so a few firsts there .. but trusted the bike would go round corners & backed off the speed a bit just happily tucking in behind a car & just crusied .. but man the weather was foul .. was quite happy to get to ferry terminal & see the others waiting .. while we hid under the ramp could have a wee break .. overall I was still nice & warm appeared dry .. & the weather could have been worse it could have had a frigid wind as well so at least that was missing ..
so off we all went & a few flooding patches that could not be avoided .. thought crap but stayed upright & followed Yod through the water ..
stop at Mana for a much needed hot choccy & to wring out the gloves (which are still drying by the fire tonite, rest of gear airing out but not bad) & headed off .. I managed to get a wee break on the rest of the crew .. & just again just cruised, was not prepared to risk bike or me by taking stupid risks .. but realised once we left mana some of the night/rain issues that bikers faced .. was interesting glare of headlights coming towards you, rain on visor making visablity pretty poor, & losing the road markings at times .. quickly realised the best bet would be to sit behind a car & follow their red lights ..
got to pram & still no signs of bikes so pulled into petrol station & got to other end bout 1 min later they came up so shot out & got back into the group .. much better with numbers .. also by this stage was starting to get fatigued, the throttle needed quite a bit of twist to keep her on power .. luckily i have a fair amount of upper body strength but was having to let go occassionally to shake my hand out .. combined with very wet gloves prob did not help
also this was quite a distance to ride on a bike that I had only just gotten on & with weather conditions not being the best, adding to the fatigue being constantly vigilant for cars who simply could not see you .. well i guess thats wot happened on the motorway heading down there ... had to take a wee bit of evasive action .. but all good & a boost to the heart rate .. :dodge:
got to Otaki & had realised that cowboyz had been "missing" for quite a few ks .. so pulled over to wait .. others sailed off, but figured that they would realise the group was getting smaller soon enough .. cowboys rocked up a few mins later & we were on the way again .. picked up meanie few ks up the road ..& off the three of us set .. coming up the hill outta Otaki (passing lanes) the back end of the gixxer gave quite a good flick back & forth (is that a fish tail?) so figure I must have gone through a good puddle or river across the road .. certainly felt that one but survived it & did not panic, whew Al was not there to see it .. might have given him a heart attack.. speaking of which we picked up yod & 86 quite a few ks up the road just outta Manakau .. so off we set as a group again ..
finally got a break from the rain about levin .. stopped in shannon .. but since my truck & all were in Palmy was not heading home immediately .. so off we set again .. the twisties just outta shannon was my opps moment .. was far enough back to need high beam .. coming up to first corner had high beam on & car came round corner .. could not figure how to turn them off again .. & only one hand on handlebar trying to go round a corner .. :nono: will not do that again .. so a slight wobble from the bike again guess not giving in to the panic feeling stands me in pretty good stead .. still needing to be smoother through those corners & obviously being able to judge them in all conditions will help me though this ..
felt pretty good by the time we got back to Al's .. knees were not sore but shoulders & right arm quite tired .. & woke up about 2am with shoulder aching like crazy & muscle spasm .. but am guessing being in that sports rider stance is quite hard on the upper body .. being quite a long ride & mostly wet weatherfor the first time prob did not help either ... but fun factor totally up there .. & nerves gone once i was on the bike & started riding .. so totally worth any ache ..
Yod that is one nice machine you have, glad we came to escort you home, & knowing you got home safely in that weather
thanks Al totally appreciate the trust, & allowing me to have fun on your bikes .. it has been a real adventure, that I would repeat today if I could. Its also given me confidence to know that I can ride bikes of that size .. gives me plenty to ponder when I get my full licence :Punk::love:

Hi folks. I'm writing this from a hilltop in Wellington, aka Mum's
I'm recovering from what seems to me to be quite a nasty cut in my lower abdomen necessary to repair a hernia that I suffered years ago whilst moving house. I was carrying an old fashioned washing machine and felt it all just go pop.
Anyway, ACC, in their drive to reduce costs told me that it wasn't caused by a "single event" and refused to cover it. I would have had to go through major red tape and months of waiting to appeal so just decided I couldn't be bothered with it all and finally got onto the public waiting list about five years later!
So, to cut a long story short, on Monday I reported to Palmerston North hospital at 1130 am and two hours later I was given a general anaesthetic and woke up 50 mins later to find that this big hole in my abdomen had been repaired with a large piece of plastic mesh.
It bloody hurts though and two days later I'm still basically bedridden although I'm managing to limp around the house more and more now. So I'm hoping that it won't be too much longer until I can walk around pain free.
I'd like to say a huge thanks to Sarah, Chanceyy and my Mum for all the support and caring
And thanks too for the posts, texts and pm's guys, that's been great
I can't wait to get back on the bike, but I know I can't right now, so I'll be content with imagining what it will feel like in a few weeks time
Never had one of those things Alistair, but did have the Appendix out many years ago, remember it well.......had a real funny maori bloke in the same room and he loved telling jokes...(bastard)... also had to spew standing up with a pillow held tight around the stomach area...fuck i was crook...... can sympathize with ya mate...wont be long till you are back in the saddle dude...:niceone:...Mark
So i take the viffer for a warrant expecting to replace the rear tyre and away we go:
ah no sonny - you're screwed, and whoever put the last warrant on it was either a total idiot or dodgy as hell
Rear tyre no good (ok, expected that)
Front tyre no good (I actually argued that one a bit, there's still a fair bit of tread there)
Rear brake pads (seem ok but ohwell)
Right fork seal leaking (a little, only a little)
but here are the best bits:
Handgrips loose (okay, pretty minor but like that when i got it and it had a wof)
Broken tail light lense where you cant even see it (like that when i got it and it had a wof)
Front disks under thickness (like that when i got it and it had a wof)
Rear disk has surface cracks (like that when i got it and it had a wof)
End of clutch lever gone (like that when i got it and it had a wof)
so obviously the buyer dont want it (and I dont blame him), the disks alone would be $8-900!!
I'd like so say a huge thanks to Hastings Honda for putting a quite obviously dodgy warrant on it which it should never have got:finger:
any suggestions on what to do with it? i really would like to get some cash back from it somehow, i guess parts is the only way, unless i can get it fixed on the cheap

Cheers Mark
Yep, a hernia repair is no joke alright, and it had to be done, otherwise they just get bigger and can end up strangling an intestine which can be fatal.
They're OK to begin with, but there come a point where you just can't ignore them.
They're more common in males, so just be careful everyone - don't lift anything that you know is too heavy!
every day is one day closer to getting back on the trumpy Al
hope you feel better soon

Bummer Jonno! Still, you could shop around 2nd hand dealers and prob get those parts for a reasonable sum. Try Buckets n Bits in Wellie. The guy there sorted me out with a mirror for the gixxer for $20 plus p&p. Took 2 days from 1st email too!

buger.
tyres are tyres. easy fix there/
handgrips.. get a syringe and pump some glue in there.
rotors are a biggy. have a talk to a guy who does freddys discs up in tauranga somewhere. very cheap aftermarket rotors but still dont expect to get away for under $400.
I am guessing that you took it to a bike shop cause VTNZ or ONROAD would never have picked up half these things.
You could spend some time repairing it over time or reauction it with the problems in the open and hope to get $4-500 for it.

yup...i knew i needed the rear tyre anyway so i took it to afc to do the tyre and warrant - the disks i can handle but some of the other stuff is pretty pedantic - i basically told him he was full of it re the front tyre, see the pic below, you reckon thats a fail ?? pretty bloody picky if you ask me....
still deciding what to do with it - i might take my time and tidy it up as and when i can find bits....

first off Al good .. just got back fr hospital & he is looking great ..
Its also given me confidence to know that I can ride bikes of that size .. gives me plenty to ponder when I get my full licence :Punk::love: Blown away.......awsome read girl and well done.........loved the write up and was imagining how you felt, guess id better chuck you some keys on the day then eh................

how about next saturday? (14th) - mrs yod gets back from Tauranga about 3pm so need to pick her up from work but other than that a messy arvo pulling a honda apart sounds like a plan
i will supply a bottle of beam for those who wanna come along and help (or give advice, or abuse...etc)
I'll make it to-be-confirmed at this stage, have to see what parts i can get hold of first...
so...where do i get fork seals and oil? repco/supercheap/afc/freedom??
goto freedom and they should be able to order what you need.
Cant comment on that other shop.
I will tag along. Might even bring another bottle and shout a comment or two at the workers.............

Sounds like a good session coming up then  Hopefully I'll be in some sort of condition to participate in some way
The last two days have been spent in bed, with the odd hour or two limping around the house, and yesterday I managed to get down the road a little and wander my old neighbourhood. Whoah, some of those old memories fair made me blush too :gob:
Among the more innocent ones were of riding my XL 250 to work every day and then gunning around the local hillsides every weekend. Those were the days

Heh heh, sure do  Just been a little waylaid, and it seemed like quite an effort to turn on a computer and sit in one spot for too long.
I'm feeling soooo much better today tho thank god! It really makes one aware of one's mortality going through an op, and mine was nowhere near the 'major' category by any means. My total empathy goes to those who have or are going through similar situations.
I'm hoping to get downtown with Mum soon and confirm that there is still life on earth and that life is not just confined to daytime TV

hows the bung wing mate? tried getting on the bike yet?
bet ya have....
Malcolm at Econohonda has come up with this:
set of used discs (2xfr, 1xrr) that have good usable life still in them - $300
set of brake pads (3x) for $120
Clutch lever $21
Tail light lense $70
Fork seals $11 each
so I'm thinking it's possibly a goer (I wouldnt bother with the tail light lense tho, sod that for $70) - so if I did, the bike would then owe me around $2200
so, given that I can advertise it as having all it's discs, pads and fork seals done and a new rear tyre, I could possibly sell it for $2k.....
thoughts/opinions anyone? reckon I'm dreaming? not worth spending it? think i'll probably wanna keep it once it's tidied up? (yeah probably )

Wouldnt have been able to ride before yesterday pm either as thats when I picked up new helmet, gloves and jacket- not to mention paying the bills so as to get bike back.

looks ok cheak price wise I guess the price for the clutch leaver is for a new one not a second hand one.....if you swing by manawatu motorcycles on Andrew young street he has new clutch leavers for about $19
But at the end of the day how much would you loose if you sold her as is?

That's less than $500.00 for a totally roadworthy bike, not bad in todays environment. Barry's 'as is' point is a good one too, and if you go with the fix up you have the choice of whether to sell, or keep and use!

Be honest you say? Well here is my thoughts on it. Get ready to either do one of the following.
1. ignore me all together.
2. get offended
3. take my advice for what it is worth (it is free btw)
My thoughts.
What is a 1986 unwarrentable bike worth? Probably about $3-400 IF you can find someone with the same bike or a passion for them and wants one in the shed as parts or a do upper. (And that is a BIG IF)
What is a 1986 vfr 400 that has had a heap of work done and registered and warrented worth? Probably about 1700-2000 to virtually anyone who is looking at jumping on a 400.
So for spending $500 on the bike you increase its value but 14-1600 and increase its appeal to the market.
If you are going to consider purchase price and maintance in the equation then you must also work out an hourly rate for enjoyment you have had out of the bike. What has it been worth to you to have a bike to ride? Only you can answer this question.
Then begs the question whether or not you should keep it.
Answer is always no. At the end of the day you have a far superior bike sitting right next to it and riding the 400 is going to teach you nothing about how to ride the 900. If your wife wants to ride then it may be worth keeping it for that has a replacement bike for her is going to cost more than repair and sale of the 400 and it will keep her off the 900. If she doesnt want to ride it then there isn't alot of point in keeping it. Let the bike leave in grace and as a memory of a fantastic ride. The more you ride the 900 the less you will be inclined to ride the 400. Power is addictive.
So my advice.. let the 400 be. Do it up, plenty of help on offer around these parts and remember it for what it was and then get out and start making some new memories on the 900.

Now back in Palmy. Quite nice to be back especially since I'm feeling a little better. Still quite a painful cut, but it's getting better as long as I don't cough or move too quickly in the wrong direction.
Being at Mum's was fun and a good way to spend some time together, seeing as it doesn't happen too often these days. And being forced to stay in bed and eating properly was the best way to recuperate. Felt a little 'out of body' for some of the time, a physical and psychological reaction to the knife I believe.
Managed to get out into Wellie a couple of times, she's a great city and changes so rapidly, and that's always been the case. I just love all the little bits of artwork that catch your eye at every turn now it seems.
Drove myself down to Aro Valley this morning for a latte and people watch - great, such a different scene.
Sarah was kind enough to drive down to collect me and soon enough we were back in another landscape.
It was GREAT to see the Gixxers and Triumph again  and I can see myself back in the saddle again soon. Not too soon though, I'll know when it feels right, and I sure as hell don't want to rip any of these stitches out, that would turn everything upside down all over again.
