Was sitting here not doing much at all and a bike pulls up in the driveway.

YES the rumours are true.

I said I wouldn't post until 86 had a chance to post his own photos but his busy work schedule (and spare time being put to good use running her in) means he hasnt got any photos of his own yet.

So, super bright yellow Triumph 955i. In real life, it is nice - real nice.

Be good to see it out on a ride soon 86. (can we still call you 86 or are you renaming yourself to 005?)

Hey, yeah! Thanks friends:rockon:

Yeah, the rumours are true, and I'll try and start at the beginning.

I've loved bikes all my life, ever since I was kid, still am, but that's bikes for ya.

Well anyway, way back in the late 80's after I was forced to sell my 85 gixxer F I noticed these new Triumphs coming out, and being the lover of great beauty that I am I thought to myself, yeah wow, I'd love one of those alright.

However, life and finances intervened as they do, and I was bikeless throughout the 90's when I got my second gixxer, which is now back in the garage with my third. God they look good together.

So, I'd seen this brand new 05 Daytona in one of the local dealers and by god, what a decent price on it. Still, way out of my league, but you know how it is with dreams, lust, and love. I had to force it into my subconcious and tell myself, don't be greedy, you've already got two of the most incredible machines ever made, be content.

Call me obsessive compulsive, but when Barry showed up on his, it was just too much. Thanks Barry

There was just something about Triumph. Maybe it's because I was born in Britain, maybe it's the tradition, the old empire striking back, the legend, the line, the heritage. And hell, I know virtually nothing about Triumph, yet.

Whatever it is, Triumph has. But then again, so do a lot of others.

To cut to the chase. I had week off, and without the distraction, I did some sums and decided there was no way. But hell, I could be dead tomorrow. Hope not tho.

So, with the maths done I just went in and signed up. Great. Tomorrows another day, right. It's scary though.

There's plenty more I could rave on about on the subject but it's late, and the Triumph journeys just beginning.

I picked her up at 4.00 Friday afternoon, with just over one mile on the clock. This was put there by the guys making sure the temps and fluids were all A OK.

There's a pretty strict run in regime to follow, and that meant not above 3500 rpm for the first 100 miles. Yep, digital speedo in mph, great!

So, as I pulled out into the traffic, I realised just how careful I'd have to be to ensure she get's run in properly. Treat her right now, and the rewards will keep coming mile after mile after mile.

I hit the open road, and guess what. 6th gear, 3500 rpm, and a 20 kt headwind gave me 57-58 mph. For the first time in a long time I rode on the shoulder, and was overtaken time after time by commuters heading home. They must have been wondering what the hell is that bike doing, or not doing?

I do love mph, the only problem being is that miles take a lot longer to clock up than kms lol. So, got home with 21 miles on the dial. Sweet.

I was lucky enough to finish work early today, and after picking up official plate and reg, hit the road again.

Being a nice day, calmer and less wet than the night before, I had my first real chance to get familiar. One of the things that had impressed me the night before was the exhaust note on the deceleration, a kind of deep Whoooof, really nice and considering the minimal rpm allowed, pretty darn impressive:yes:

So, along I tootled, and at 3 1/2, mostly all I could hear was the sound of a big motor whirring away gently, but with just enough interesting ticks and tacks to whet the interest in what is yet to come.

The miles glided by quite effortlessly, and I passed through Sanson and Bulls, back down through Halcombe, one of my fav roads, and this is where I started to explore the handling characteristics. Very nice. Light, quick and incredibly responsive and nimble would adequately describe it. The steering is raked back quite steeply, and with a 16 inch front, much more responsive to rider input than I've been used to.

It also has quite a rake on the riders seat, which almost gave me the sensation of falling over the top of the screen, but I know I'll get used to that.

By this time I'd approached the 70 mile mark, and decided to crack the hundred. So, through Feilding and out the back road to the Saddle. Now, on the uphill twisty climb, this is when the great handling of this bike really started to show itself and it became a delight beneath me. A quick stop at the top, then down into Woodville, through the gorge then onto the Aokoutere road. 97, 98, 99, 100 - yes! On the dot I throttled gently up to 5000. The transition was effortless and boy, did she appreciate it. Gravity seemingly started to release it's grip and for the first time, I got a very, very tiny hint of the awesome power and acceleration that has still to be unleashed. In 870 miles time.

In a matter of seconds, less, with the tach indicating 5000 the speed indicated 79 mph. Whoa, that's license losing and it's not even begun yet. Still, I'd been cleared to overtake:yes:

At the edge of civilisation I turned back to Ashurst, and my god, those corners just melted away, and on more than one occasion I had to throttle back, just in case one of those oncoming cars would spoil the delight.

If this is 5000, what the hell is 10 1/2 going to be like? At 300 miles I can go to 6.

Stopped in to see Lance, and had a very nice chat and a photo:yes: And a huge thanks for this thread:yes: And, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!:2thumbsup

Then back home via Stoney Creek and Bunnythorpe.

Wow, what a rave, there's so much more to say about this bike and the emotions involved with a brand new machine, running it in, and the relationship that's developing. All those things about merging with the machine, the craft involved in developing it, riding it, engines, gears, symmetry, Zen, it's all true, and beautiful.

Now, where and what lies ahead tomorrow?

Well, I managed to get through work today despite my marathon scribe session last night:yes: I'd rather have been riding, but it was a good day in the end. Bloody freezing though so I hope you all wrapped up well if you were out on the bikes!

The best thing though is that I now have another weeks leave (thank god for study breaks) which sounds as if it could be ideal for getting the next 870 or so break in miles done. Hmmm, that should be perfect for next weekend

I can't wait to show you all this bike and really looking forward to seeing Barry's one back to put side by side. And I hope that this new bike buying trend doesn't cause any bankruptcies lol.

10th June 2007, 20:16
Hmmm, 230 at 9 is it. Ok, may have to find a closed private road then<_< I do know of a runway too lol.

I'm really looking forward to getting em both out there Barry, I just hope the weather holds so I can get the 1000 miles done this week! Is your speedo in mph or kph?

I can go to 5000 rpm until 300 miles completed, then 6000 from 300 - 600, 7000 from 600 -800, 8000 from 800 - 1000.

I'm only up to 130 miles now so it's going to take a few days.

It's really important to vary the engine speed during this period too, so I'm being super careful about that.

Bling! Yes, I'll have to check that out lol.

Cheers guys, this is an amazing machine. I'm just dying to spend some decent time with it, starting tomorrow. The build quality is top rate and it looks great from all angles. There sure is. I was having a coffee in Bulls yesterday admiring it, when along comes an old boy who sits down beside me and proceeds to talk non stop for the next 15 mins. Whew, finished at last. Major cut and paste job below.

Right! Well the day started off nasty and wet, windy and cold - curses! I had planned to do a major trip today and although expecting the bad weather, it was still not a pleasant thought being wet ALL day lol.

So after checking the forecast, it looked as though Palmy would start to behave around midday, and after I'd finished having fun on KB it was getting onto about that time. I like being on leave, so much more relaxing.

The forecast had said there was a front approaching from the north, which was unusual, but explained the easterlies. But it looked promising, well, more promising than it had earlier anyway:yes:

So I kitted up in just about every piece of warm clothing I had and got on the road with no particular destination in mind - old age lol.

One of the disadvantages in living in a flat place is that there are no vantage points to see the weather, except for the Rangitiki St bridge, well nearby anyway. So I took advantage of the very small elevation to check out the weather in all directions. North and East looked bad, really socked in and dark, but the coast and down to the South looked pretty good, with blue (ish) skies towards the Strait.

So South it was then, and along Tremaine Ave I headed, looking forward to getting onto some open road. At this point I'd only done 130 miles and was restricted to 5000 rpm until I'd passed the 300 mile mark. This was ok as 5000 equated to 79 mph, which was more than enough for the job in hand at this point.

Hit the turnoff to highway 57 and just cruised along according to the road and traffic conditions. Passed a couple of cars quite easily and once again was stuck by just how light and responsive this bike is. It takes only a tiny amount of input to make it move a long way, which I'd imagine is the case for all modern sportsbikes - which of course it is.

Anyway, I couldn't help comparing it to the gixxers, and I must say that tho the early gixxers wrote the book (quiet in the critics section please lol), evolution has certainly done it's job very well these days!

Where the moderate corners on this road would take a reasonable amount of input to sweep around, all it took the Daytona to get around a fair bit quicker was to just look at them - great, but I'll have to be careful or I could quite easily overdo it. Meaning that the sensation of speed is really minimal, which is fine until it catches you out. Anyway, I will get used to that as I grow more accustomed to it.

For example, at 60 mph (100kph) along the straight I felt as if I could literally just step off the bike and everything would be fine. It wouldn't of course, but that's how it felt because of the smoothness and lack of engine and wind noise.

Anyhow got to Shannon (sorry for not calling in Jodi, I was starving and desperately needed a coffee lol). I almost pressed on to Levin, but thought bugger it, I'm hungry now.

Now, the interesting thing was that as I approached the big left hand 90* corner several people on the other side of the street all turned around as the bike decelerated. Yep, that old boom huh - great!

Had a quick bite and as I was leaving bumped into Kane for a quick chat and hello:yes:

Onwards past Levin and onto SH1. Took it very easy and just went with the flow, being mindful to change speed regulary in accordance with the running in procedure. Just north of Otaki the fuel light illuminated and I pulled into the BP with a total of 170 miles (272 km) completed. Hmm, thats not bad, and according to the manual I have approx 4 litres left. That's just under an imperial gallon, or just over a US gallon. The tank capacity is 21 litres and it took 14.5 litres to fill. So, it appears the fuel warning light is quite optimistic - good.

So that's about 45 mpg or 18.7 km per litre at a very moderate power setting. Not bloody bad! Checked the oil as well - sweet!

So, back on the road and feeling very comfortable with the bike. It's a joy to ride and although slightly hard on the wrists, very easy on the knees.

By this time I was starting to notice a change in the engine note as well. It was settling down nicely and starting to want more feeding hehe.

But gently does it, she wasn't getting any more than 5000 rpm until 300 miles.

Glided effortlessly up the Piecoc hill, well, the bike did, I couldn't quite keep up with her and had to remind myself that this machine is capable of much more than I am. Still, I was the rider.

Got to the top took some pics (thanks Sandra:yes:) and even though it was blowing at least 25 kts, it was a great feeling being up there with this bike. It was then that I discovered that no, you cannot put her into gear with the sidestand down, the engine just stops - twice. Doh!

Anyway, glad I hadn't had my first breakdown, it was down the hill towards Pahautanui, and I really got a slightly better grip on that nimbleness this time, and I do mean only more slightly. It was a bloody good little ride down there, marred only by a boy racer not keeping up with his side of the road!

Onto the Haywards and as I'd decided to take the scenic route via the Rapa I had a quick look up at the hill at the Haywards summit. As expected with the easterly, it was shit.

Well, thats OK, I don't mind getting wet, and it will be a good chance to see how these Bridgestone Battlax 010R's hold up. I haven't done much tyre research I'm sorry to say, so I don't know much about them, but they seemed quite good in the dry. Better than I was anyway.

Onto the Hutt Rd and everyone was doing 120 (kms) so I just kept up with that until the traffic thinned out at the bottom of the hill. It was very wet by this time and in solid cloud and mindful of the recent offs, I mosied on up at a sedate pace. The tyres's seemed pretty confident and I had no frights.

Got to the top and stopped for more pics (thanks again Sandra:yes: ) and a decision to backtrack or continue. Easy, I really want to get wet, where's the fun in being in sunshine all day? (I've forgotton I said that already, ok)

Down the other side waiting for my gloves to soak through and actually got to Carterton without this happening. Strange. Still it WILL happen lol.

Great latte in Carterton, more pics, night had fallen and as my hands were pretty cold I got out these little poly inners that I bought last week. They made a huge difference until Masterton when the inevitable happened and that first horrible drop of water started running down my sleeves into my gloves - yuck. Tried to deal with it roadside, but ha. Although, I did get to see the temp gauge go from 179 F up to 212 while I idled. So that was good. No warning displays and according to the manual it will flash at 266 F/129 C.

I decided to go through Masterton (hi guys, yes I like to think of it as gold too:yes: ) instead of taking the bypass, just in case I hit something or missed a corner. The rain made oncoming traffic pretty hazardous, so it was a nice easy cruise through town and out the other side.

Luckily it wasn't really cold or the ride could have got unpleasant, but the headlights on the Daytona are pretty darn good and it was no problem cruising up towards Eketahuna for the next stop and text:yes:

I literally had to wring out my gloves, but this was allayed by the favourable bike comments from passer bys:yes:

By now I'd covered 280 miles and soon it would be time to go to 6000 rpm. As it happened I clocked 300 miles almost right outside the Tui brewery at Mangatainoka! Very ironic I thought lol.

Ok, so here we go, and as the road was pretty deserted and straight, and the rain had stopped, up I went to 6000. The bike had been waiting for this all day (so had I) and once again I was rewarded by a lovely growl burbling out of that huge piece of stainless steel hanging off the right side. Marvelous it was and the wind noise grew stronger but no buffeting. Great! So at 6000 I had a quick look and was indicating 97 mph.

I would like to emphasise that by this time the rain had completely stopped and the visibility was good. And besides, it was only a for a few seconds  I am NOT advocating exceeding the posted speed restrictions.

Woodville - pie and text lol. More glove wringing.

On into the Gorge and all was going well, nice sedate pace, good following distance but dark.

Then suddenly I see a black outline in the middle of the road. Shit, it was a rockfall. I had no time to avoid it and just kept straight. A big bang and the bike jumped sideways but stayed upright. Fuck!

The middle of the Gorge is not a good place to stop without a torch, and I could feel no major damage or strange noises so I kept going to Ashust Mobil and had a quick inspection.

Thank god there were no major pieces ripped out from anywhere, just a couple of small scrapes and one very small hole in the belly pan. No exhaust pipe damage either. I was pissed off but relieved that it hadn't taken me out.

Well, I guess I can't take it back now, and I just have to think of it as bling.

So, after all that, it really was a supurb ride on a beautiful bike. I'm glad I'm closer to the 1000 mile mark, and also vey glad of the wakeup call of the dangers of night riding through unforgiving roads. And of the often very unforgiving nature of riding in general.

So please people, ride carefully and expect the unexpected.

Got home and now have 323 miles logged.

Sorry this took so long, I really am a very slow typist:yes:

I would love to, and it wouldn't be hard on this bike lol. Unfortunately, I have a 500 mile service and according to the manual "the first service MUST be carried out at 500 miles/800 kilometers/1 month, whichever comes first".

So I'd probably miss that one, how about a pie from the Waiouru Caltex instead?

P.S. I believe that the reason I didn't see the rocks was that the headlights, which are supurb, are designed in such a way as to not throw the light directly in front of the bike. Which is exactly what you want, as your gaze should be directed into the middle and far distance. And this is what the headlight design achieves very well. However, there is a distinct 'dark spot' immediately in front of the bike, and I did not pick up on the fact that the rocks were in the middle distance until too late.

Great:yes: I've only got 177 miles (283 km) before the 500 mile service. I'm thinking maybe Waiouru via Vinegar Hill, which should allow plenty of rev changes. Although looking out the window it looks decidedly dark up that way, but whatever, I will get those miles done:yes: Luckily I have spare gloves. Standby for pics:yes:

Gold does has a certain ring to it doesn't it

Thanks mate, yes, I'd hate to crash it. Apart from out of the blue things like last nights rocks on the road, I'm a pretty conservative rider and am always mindful of my limits and the conditions. I've seen enough bins to have a healthy respect for them. You'll have to get out on an Ashurst ride sometime:yes:

Yeah its a 1992/3 900 daytona first rego'd in 96 ex aussie very good motor as everything is oil injected as triumph went over the top in there early development of the modren triumph so its a bullet proof motor took it for a test ride and went well once out of town sluggish at low revres so carbs do need attention but you can replace the carbs with a injection unit which is cheaper than doing the carbs up but well worth the money at $4500 as that is what it was traded for

Last set of pics ....

Cool! And at least it's before 2 am this time lol.

I thought having exactly 500 miles as I arrived home just had to be a good omen!

Well, as reported, I needed to get 500 miles done before my first service. Triumph are very adamant about this for warranty purposes. And rightly so, they need to be sure all is done correctly so as to prevent future problems. I can live with this:yes:

So, a quick estimation of distance bought me to the conclusion that Waiouru
and back would just about do the trick, and after checking the aviation weather site (which reminds me, if anyone would like me to show you how to log on and interpret the data, let me know. It's up to the minute reports and forecasts, much more accurate than most other sources - mostly) it looked like east and south were out so Waiouru it was.

I thought I'd go via Vinegar Hill, just to add to the interest, keep off SH1, and also, it's highly recommended not to run the engine at constant speeds for too long while running in.

I finally got it together about 1130 and got on the road. My gear was still a bit damp from the night before, but luckily I had spare gloves so this wasn't a problem.

I headed to Feilding for fuel and a pie - and a latte of course:yes: On the way out, Vinegar Hill looked really bad, but further west looked pretty good.

So I headed out through Halcombe, such a good road this, and ended up on SH1, which wasn't what I really wanted due to the ever lurking danger.

Riding SH's can always be a bit risky, and nowhere near the fun of the back roads, but I had a pretty clear run to Mangaweka for a quick stop and a pic.

Another straightforward cruise to Taihape, and it was good to see so many admiring looks and comments on the bike:yes:

Just out of Taihape, I was overtaken by a boy racer in a little Nissan. We had a bit of fun all the way to Waiouru, but he had the advantage as I couldn't and wouldn't go above 6000 rpm.

It was getting pretty wet by the time I arrived and I was amused to see my tyres steaming in the puddles outside the pie shop:yes:

I reckon these Bridgestones are a damn good tyre so far. I've now done about 200 miles in the wet and they have been rock solid!

Anyway, I was immediately befriended by a real cute little cat who quickly persuaded me to share Cowboyz's pie - sorry Lance:yes: It was a bit dry anyway:yes:

I was feeling a bit shagged by this time and then it started to rain. And get colder.

Just then, a little kid told me what a nice bike I had, so that made me feel better.

So, back on the road southbound. Another stop at Taihape, and I was really starting to feel like a travelling vagabond. A quick coffee did the trick.

I decided to take the scenic route, so headed out down the twisty back road to Mangaweka. This is a great road, realy scenic, and plenty of good corners, but today it was wet and horrible, but still spectacular. I just meandered along enjoying giving the bike a workout, and was feeling really pleased that she was getting exactly what Triumph wanted. I'm still very much getting used to her, especially in wet shitty conditions, and I can't wait for the run in to progress further.

I got to Mangaweka and headed down to Vinegar Hill. The weather wasn't too bad out of the hills and it looked average once I got to the turnoff. So a quick pic and txt stop and it was into the hill. It was almost dark by this point, but that was Ok. As mentioned the headlights are bloody good, but I was VERY mindful of debris on the road, and took it easy.

Nowhere near as fun as the last time on this great piece of road, but never mind:yes:

Got to the end without incident, and headed home.

The engine is sounding really good now, the whole bike is coming together very well, clutch and gearbox are working smoothly, and that engine noise under acceleration is awesome. And that's still only up to 6000. She needs another 100 miles before she can go to 7000, and I'm certainly looking forward to hearing that! It's really good cruising along at 4000 or so and giving the throttle a quick twist, the entire thing just changes, giving out a rich deep bark and surging forward very positively.

I test rode a 04 gixxer thou a couple of months back, and doing the same thing gave out an instant punch, the Daytona is way smoother, if less instantaneous.

It will be interesting to explore the higher rpm regime and see what sort of response it gives under heavy throttle - cant wait:yes:

It will also be good to be able to use engine braking more effectively, and also to not have to change up so often.

I'm talking twisties here as it's distracting to have to change up, then back down for the next corner rather than just leave it in the lower gear. And the noise reverberating off those valley walls is just stunning:yes:

So, I made it home and guess what. The 500th mile appeared as I turned down my street - nice one:yes:

well thanks to the boy in blue on the gold  ( its more gold than yellow .. pics did not do her justice)beast for the escort back into the magnificant Manawatu .. as I was held up behind a few trucks & in desperate need of a pee stop in Taihape, Al decided to ride to met me since I was still a wee way out from Vinegar hill .. met at bottom of mangaweka hill ... with a cop on my ass was good to see Al doing respectable speeds

decided to negotiate the hill & turn off the main road so BJ could have a run while I checked out the beast .. & have a sit on her ..

what can I say .. up she is sexy as hell lots of curves & a wide ass .. can totally relate to the wide ass ... more cushing for the pushing ... oopss I mean ..... :shit:

then it was fun with Al escorting me back to his place for the much needed coffee .. watching him counter steer .. rapid acceleration (yeah yeah yeah .. that fuel injection works well against a diesel 4x4) .. honestly driving absolutely cracking up knowing Al was having a blast out there ... :killingme

well its official .. I am back in the Manawatu .. was awesome seeing the bike Al .. thanks for the escort mate .. can not wait for a pillion ride on the beast .. or to test ride the Gixxer in the garage :innocent:

now for some serious bike riding time over the next 5 days til my annuals are over

14th June 2007, 21:05
Hi everyone:yes:

I thought I'd provide an update in the journey I'm having with me new bike:yes:

Yesterday was a quiet one. As mentioned, I'd finished the 500 miles required before first service the previous night.

I really enjoyed this experience, and it's been great to see all the 'firsts' happening for both the bike and myself.

Although, I was quite happy to have completed the first 500, as at least half of it was done in the wet and cold.

My gear has held up well, with the exception of my gloves and my left boot is letting in a bit of water. But a Pac n Save bag dealt to that surprisingly well:yes:

Yesterday started off quietly as I really NEEDED to clean the bike. It was absolutely filthy, and I wanted to get rid of that corrosive dirt as soon as I could. So, I spent a quiet couple of hours just getting into all the places I could and giving her a good wash down, lube, and general exploration.

Well, I'm impressed. The build quality is supurb, with so much thought and attention going into the design of all parts of the whole. I noticed a few electrical components had been made in Spain, and apparantly the most fail prone are the German ones!

The whole machine just oozes (modern) character. Ok, so a few panels don't quite line up, the rear cover requires an 'interesting' technique to fit correctly, you can't check the coolant level without unscrewing the seat (another interesting arrangement), I'd love an oil sightglass, an air temperature gauge would be nice, and it would be great to adjust the throttle cable without taking the tank off, the rpm gauge is a little boring, but really, that's all part of it.

I'm looking forward to getting the fairings off and having a look around, as it's really tightly cowled and not easy to peek inside. But the fairings, esecially the top one and the windscreen really do the job aerodynamically, and there is very little buffeting or wind noise at open road speeds, and as mentioned elsewhere, the sensation of speed is minimal.

Make no mistake though, this thing is fast, smooth, and slippery. It's very easy to be lulled into a false sense of security in the cruise, and on the main highways, the speedo needs regular scanning. I'm actually quite chuffed that everything is in imperial units, it just seems somehow more 'British'

I think this one may have been originally destined for the British or US market maybe, and although I am told that I can probably change it all to metric, I don't think I will.

So, after the clean, I couldn't resist a quick trip around the block and 15 miles later I thought I had better put it away or I might get told off by Triumph lol.

So I decided to take one of the gixxer's for a spin instead, and as I was warming her up, I really couldn't help thinking that you can't beat the early gixxer profile for sheer poetry of design. It's lean, mean, and still a stunning looking bike.

But wow, what a difference in ride experience. I felt really cramped and low to the road, but after a few km's I found the position again, and just enjoyed.

Dog's and I had arranged to take the trailer up to the Naki to pick up Dog's Daytona which has been up there for an inspection and service, a groom, and a bit of bling. We hit the road about 6, and arrived in Opunaki just after 8. Here we were greeted by one hell of a nice guy and his son who run a specialist Triumph tune and service workshop. Well, this had to be one of the most enlightening experiences I've had in a long time and three hours later, fed and coffeed we loaded Barry's bike onto the trailer and finally arrived back in Palmerston about 2.30 am this morning.

If there are any Triumph owners reading this who want to find out more about the stunning service and expertise we were treated to last night, feel free to pm me or Dog's for more details.

My bike was due in at 9 this morning for it's first service and I actually made it out the door and down to the shop. An hour, a few question and answer sessions later, I had her back and headed to Feilding for a coffee and chill out.

Around this time I discovered that Chanceyy was in Turangi on the way home. Hmmm, this will be a good chance to escort her back to the Manawatu and get some of those much needed miles up.

It's a nice day, and Vinegar Hill should be quite rideable. So off I headed and was soon zipping down the straight into Waituna West. Watch it guys if you're going through there, the stone surface is a bit loose on the first uphill corner and I bounced around a fair bit. I stopped and discovered quite a few stones stuck by tar into my rear tyre. They had caused a bit of rear skipping, so I removed them and continued on. It's only that one bit for some reason, maybe it has been resealed recently.

I met Chancey just north of Mangaweka and it was time for a catch up, yak, walk for BJ, and mutual Daytona admiration:yes:

Then back over the hill, and I'm just onto the first of the uphill twisty when the 600th mile turned over. Great, I can now go to 7000 rpm, and took the opportunity immediately! Well, this was just what was needed on these corners and it was very handy to be able to power up without changing up, then down in rapid succession. I was able to use engine braking much more effectively, and therefore have more attention free to concentrate on the road, instead of the engine and gearbox. On the straight, 7000 rpm proved quite capable:yes:

The power delivery is smooth and very strong without being brutal, and I never felt in danger from the rear losing traction while powering out of corners. The potential was there of course, but those Bridgestone BT 010's really are a good strong road tyre and in fact are only one of three "approved" tyre types for this model Daytona. The others being the Pirelli Dragon Evo, and the Metzeler MEZ3.

So back to my place for a coffee and another chat, and 632 miles done!

At 800 miles I can go to 8000 rpm not above that until 1000 miles, and that is the end of the official run in period. Although I was reliably informed last night that the motor won't really be truly bedded in until 3000 miles have passed and I will heed that advice and feel satisfied that this bike has been truly well treated in the correct manner.

I'm just rapt that I've had the opportunity to own and run in one of the worlds legendary machines, and I've (hopefully) done this in the way in which it was intended. I've not gone above the recommended engine speeds, I've managed to avoid long periods at constant rpm, and I've been very aware of the need to give her plenty of power variation whilst keeping within the restrictions applicable at the time.

At this time, the 05 955i is the last of the Daytona's, but word has it that there may be another in the not so distant future.

Hope so:yes:

Oh God yes, the finance. Well I don't mind saying that the cost of a new bike was pretty frightening all right. I've never made a purchase this big (apart from the house) and I've broken a cardinal rule of financial smarts which is to never borrow on a depreciating asset. Tho, I doubt that this bike will depreciate too much (unless I keep hitting rocks that is).

Still, it's worth it for the sheer bloody pleasure it gives. And let's face it, we only live once and life is here to be enjoyed. And it's highly likely that future generations won't be able to ride around on machines like we do because there won't be anything left to fuel em! So enjoy while we have the chance I say.

nods it was a great day .. Al was prob the only one on the bike .. rode down to shannon & we drove back to linton in horse truck & helped dogs move house .. definate wind chill factor out there ...

rock on tomorrow .. just went out & started Betsy, could not resist a 100 meter dash up the road .. with no gear it sure was cold but damn it felt great .. .. now counting down the hours & weather looks great .. but might have to have a few thermal layers on ..

Well said Alister thats what ive been trying to tell the missus every time i bring home a test ride :shit:
