I was planning on doing nothing all weekend and recovering from this cold and the damn weather decided to come out as a minter of a day. I contemplated going for a run up the saddle but decided to leave the bike alone today and spend the day on the internet. Discovered the internet is not that big a place and actually quite boring when you venture away from kiwibiker. Chanceyy showed up for coffee so had a chat for a bit and then got back to doing nothing.

Then Storm and Yod and co showed up and twisted my arm to go out for a bit of a ride. How could I resist their cheery disposition?

So off up the valley for a gentle afternoon stroll which lasted until the edge of ashhurst where a little boyracer in a V8 needed a lesson in power. Had a little race with him which turned into a bit of a fizzer. Seemed the vechicles were not evenly matched. (Big surprise there)

So back to tootling and made it through to Kimbolton for hot chocolate. Few bikes out that way today which was good to see.

GPS shows another ride where "moving time" is less than 50% of "total time" Wonder how that happens?

Know what you mean, I found out as 86 was reading Yods write up

I don't think 86 would have let me nick any of his bikes anyway, especially if it meant leaving him to be sorely  on his own

23 degrees in Brisbane so will have to find a bike to get me warmed up out there!!

Hope new pup settling in well and keeping out of mischeif :innocent:

Looking like bike will be here before I am back:scooter: hurray !!!!!

Hopefully have someone lined up to collect it from Auckland and perhaps it will end up in 86's garage so I can sweet talk him into gettting it on the road for the day I get back

Do hope to get out on a bike or two :ride:whilst over there so will keep you posted.

My first month here has certainly been full of fun and exciting experiences , largely due to the ashurst boys n girls. Thanks for making me so welcome and dragging Ali  out on rides with his harem in the :sun: and rain.

Hope the Honda doesn't feel tame after the power of the Daytona beneath me:innocent:

Guess I won't be up to the speeds 86 is capable of without a bit more practice but I am sure he will help with the instruction once the wound heals:innocent:

the nice man (Malcolm) at Econohonda is going to do his best to get the goodies here by friday so we should be a go for the fix-up mission (if they dont get here it will be bourbon only...gee whizz...how sad...never mind....

I have a reasonable set of tools but i'm no expert at doing forks/brakes/discs so if anyone knows of any useful tools that may be needed feel free to bring them along (will be muchly appreciated)....i DON'T have vice grips and they're always useful for SOMETHING, i do have a baby sledge hammer just in case someone was thinking of strapping one of those to the back of their beastie...

anyone got verniers?

do i need a paddock stand or can we rig something up to do the rear? the viffer aint that heavy so maybe we can get a semi-drunken attendee to lie under it after they've had a few....i got a fair bit of leftover timber and wood so that may do the job ok....

i will pm everyone the address and my mobile no.

thinking of getting into it around 10am ish but come and go as you please

any other suggestions/comments??

that would be a great help mate

i've been digging through the internet (as I tend to do) and i've found some info for the viffer but it seems its quite hard to get hold of service manuals for the nc21s/24s (took me 5 minutes to find a complete service manual and parts fiche for the RF) - i've got the right oil levels/volumes for the forks and some model codes so i can identify exactly which breed mine is - honda completely changed the fork oil quantites halfway through the model...nice one honda! :finger:

but with our collective genius brought to bear on the issue i'm sure we'll get it sorted.....

great run today.

Caught up with Yod at mangaweka. the ride from dogs to mangaweka was quite slippery. The rest of the roads were great. ended up coming down vinegar hill then out the back to feilding then over halcombe hill for coffee in bulls and back through mt biggs home. Happy Happy joy joy. Met a guy Paul on a duke who rode with us over vinegar hill and halcombe hill. Suggested he sign up to kb so see if he shows up.

RF was getting a bit more of a treatment today as I got to know it better - the edges of the tyres seem to work just as well as the rest - and all this with mrs yod on the back - she's having way too much fun back there....

Good to meet Paul, let's hope he signs up. A bike with that much class deserves to be part of it eh!

Yes, a South Island trip is definitely on my to do list this summer. I'm keen on as many miles as possible, and the Takaka Hill is a must. As is the West Coast, Fiordland, Invercargill, and as many of the passes as we can fit in. Wouldn't mind a stop in Dunedin too, as I spent my formative years there (maybe that explains it) - great town!

What an awesome little bike, it handled so different to the meanie, so light and nimble on those tight pohongina twisties It was great to be able to keep up with everyone without having to wind up so much on the straights
Awesome spot you got there dogs, great place for a kb get together
Good to see you riding again Alister, did you even have an operation Always a pleasure Mr and Mrs Yod, Mitro 10 mega have a wide variety of springs in store you may want to consider putting an extra one on your side stand to stop those occasions when the butt cheeks pucker up as you hear the sound of steel scraping road Very nice bike, especialy for the price

 thought that was Yod & when I realised you had stopped thought about coming back but was under pressure to get back .. was only 10 mins late so all good

Cowboyz your right those tips when I could remember them .. absolutely brilliant.. made quite a difference on the way home .. just took a while to realise that ohh :shit: thats right I shouldn't do this ..

first off Al that explaination regarding the arrows .. that is one thing that will definately help me to read if the corner will tighten or not .. blardy brilliant .. all riders should know that one ..

Cowboyz your right looking for the exit before I have entered the corner bad move .. by looking at it in degrees .. much much better .. forgot about this from the RRRS course duhhhh .. also took a while before I realised the tip bout keeping my head level.. fab wot a difference you do get a different perception on the lean of the bike ..

tried to stay out further before cutting across the apex of the corner .. did not have to many wobble moments .. but one question & Alan could prob see this since he was behind me .. was nervous about the wet stuff .. I took it pretty conservatively through cause being cold did not know if it was icy anywhere .. esp coming down hill .. .. so can you actually see the ice or its just one of those things you will hit .??

from Shannon to Ashhurst getting buffeted by the cross winds was a bit scary .. so again really backed off the speed .. but the bike & obviously my confidence had grown heaps ..ohh yeah decided I better stop @ linton to refill .. damn glad I did .. she was ummmmmmm very low ..:shutup::shutup:

Thanks to Dogs for tightening up the back shock .. she is really hard now  & know it when ya go over a bump for sure .. Also thanks for the excuse & the ride on ya playground .. they are good roads .. a wee bit of everything .. will be playing on them roads a bit methinks ..

all in all was blardy stoked with the ride .. felt damn great to get back out there again on Betsy .. thanks definately to Cowboyz for staying behind me & seeing the list of things I can improve .. definately glad your a mentor .. was a bit nerve racking knowing you was behind me .. but forgot you was there after a while .. & you also have a lot to offer us newbies .. can see a few more practice rides coming up . & hopefully you will see the improvement soon ..

thanks Al for the explanation of the corners & arrows .. It was one of the first things I started to notice on the way home & your totally right .. makes me feel like I might be able to start "reading" the corners better .. something I definately had trouble with ..

also thanks to Alan for the company back to Ashhurst was great to know that someone else was there ..

& of course Meanie for the company mate :rockon:

I hope while you were figureing all that out you remembered to have fun.

Wet/shadowed/icey areas and how to judge them. That is one of the challenges of road riding.

You see a wet patch spread across a corner and you have to ask yourself the same question you should ask yourself every corner you come up to.

How much grip has this corner got to offer?

"The slower riders" (as a random label) of the ashhurst rides see the big bikes disappear into the distance and assume that we are scraping everything on every corner. Heres an inside tip for ya. All of us at some time or another have taken suggested speed signs on a corner as a litereral meaning due to dampness or gravel or simply that we dont like the corner. It has been said a thousand times about riding your own ride. I have dropped behind on some rides and I have been out front on some rides. It just how the puzzle falls into place and as long as noone is picking themselves up off the road then it is a good ride.

There are two ways to look at road surface.

first way.

on every corner ask yourself.

Is there gravel?
Is there ice?
Is it wet?
Is it dry?
Is there sand?
Is there dirt?
Is there cowshit?

And then avoid it all.

OR you can ask yourself

Where is a clean dry piece of road to ride round and concentrate on hitting that spot. If you cant find one within the 1.5 seconds lining the corner up, it is time to slow down.

There is always another ride just round the corner. looking forward to the next one.

ohh yeah mate I had a absolute blast dunna worry bout that .. nods .. totally fun

your right I do look at the corners & esp on the way home .. but was contemplating the wet stuff that was shaded & esp watching speed on the downhill stuff .. was under brakes most of it cause figure speed, being wet, moss in places, gravel & corners may not have been a good combo, but also it was good to experience the loose gravel & on a couple of corners there was heaps on there. (esp that last bit over the bridge - up to dogs house)

I have never thought that the guys out front are scraping around all corners but with your experience you can obviously read the corners better, general conditions, & with experience speed will come naturally ..

I want to be smoother & flow the corners speed will come much later (dunna mind fanging it down the straights .. thats my fun bit) I always try to ride my own ride .. at least I am out there doing it .. so have nuffin to prove to anyone ..

Ditto on everyone getting home in one piece .. I have no probs slowing down if I am not confident case in point the winds coming to met you guys ...

but I really do appreciate your time today Cowboyz .. am still buzzing from it ;)

cut it out. my super slick worked great today. Actually it is a fantastic tyre in the dry. Pity I cant find a dry road to ride on. Might have to see about changing it this week. The biggest thing that worries me with the new tyre is it is a racetek tyre and they have a small rep for not warming up.

Yes, those corners. We had all type of conditions thrown at us today. Gravel, moss, dampness, shit, sunstrike, wet dust, and tight twisting ones.

Good on you Sandra for taking all these tips on board, it will really help you in the long run.

Plus, you need to add into the mix total and utter concentration on the road, always, and especially up around the roads we were on today. You know the feeling? Your whole world is focussed on the road and what your bike and senses are telling you about it. If your mind is wandering, rein it in and slow down.

yup your right & sure had that today .. after reading the post about the RZ you do have to do that the whole time you are on her.. tis true ..

only time I have had trouble concentrating is when I am fatigued .. but its something that everyone else suffers as well .. & I definately back off at that point .. (generally after stopping for a period of time)

also potential hazards .. passing lots of stock & thought hmm there could be loose stock out ..

but they were great roads to ride as there are plenty of hazards & things to watch out for .. a bit of everything really

cut it out. my super slick worked great today. Actually it is a fantastic tyre in the dry. Pity I cant find a dry road to ride on.

25 degrees here today and bone dry roads, loads of hogs at winery yesterday and the throaty roar of the bikes melded well with the opera and made me want to grab my helmet, jacket and ride :ride: how bloody frustrating:yes:

You need to slow down and check your rear vision mirrors for more Triumphs

jezzz. dont you think two is enough!! Meanie is looking for an upgrade bike. If I see you over there trying to talk him into a triumph there will be words............. (esp a yellow one)

Double vision is enough...... triple I dont think I could handle.

triumph going past you, must be losing your touch cowboyz :dodge:

Or is 86 getting quicker now he is healing up and not restrained by the pillion:innocent:

I am sure that I kept saying faster faster but maybe that was something else the doctor recommended:doctor:

Tried a rolling drag but 86 buggered up the start and I got a jump. I was a bit shocked not to see him beside me and looked back to see him go flying past. Was just thinking "there he is" when another one went past.

Yes, those corners.
Plus, you need to add into the mix total and utter concentration on the road, always, and especially up around the roads we were on today. You know the feeling? Your whole world is focussed on the road and what your bike and senses are telling you about it. If your mind is wandering, rein it in and slow down.

Focusing totally on the experience is definately the way to go:yes:
Even when pillion it is a sublime experience if you are totally focused on the bike, the road and the conditions around you. Being off the bikes is like being cut off from part of the world, well bizarre, definately suffering Triumph withdrawal symptoms. Should have dragged you back onto bike on Tuesday 86!!

How did I forget what a buzz having a bike was for so many years, now the feeling is awakened again I cannot stand being away from the power, speed and connection with the bike.

I hope I get to go pillion again on the girl when I get back in between the Honda runs:ride:. Two different experiences but equally special.

hey a huge thanks to cowboyz, sheep and 86 for helping out with the viffer on Saturday, it was a right pain too since

1) it's old as...
2) it's a honda...:woohoo:
3) it was a glorious day for a ride and we were in the garage all day
4) we were missing a few tools that would have been useful (but we made do, cos we're clever like that)
5) they sent the wrong pads for the rear :oi-grr:
6) the front discs are a bit thick
7) the pistons are a dog
8) etc....you get the idea

was a bloody mission but we at least got it to the point where i know where I'm at in terms of the next step and i never would got all that done without blacksheeps fine selection of tools, cowboyz uncanny willingness to dismantle a honda (hmmm....i wonder about that), 86's encouragement from the peanut gallery (i know you woulda been in like a robber's dog if you weren't still recovering mate) and everybody's helpful attitude and cunning plans

top points of note during the day:

- The idea of open the roof access in my garage and suspending the front end of the bike from the rafters with tiedowns (was that your idea blacksheep):niceone:

- The absolute mess of bikes, bike bits and tools spread far and wide throughout my garage - twas a joy to behold:weep:

- The bit were we sat the swingarm on a broom handle since the paddock stand was too wide and cowboyz thought he'd better test it....CRACK!

- And finally and most fortuitous and seriously sneaky....I know some of you have heard the rumour and i can confirm it's true - I DO have a photo of cowboyz working on a honda :devil2: can you spell blackmail?

thanks chaps - had a fine bike-mania weekend (they should all be like that!)

Sounds like a great day was had by all:yes: and you managed to overcome the small obstacles that got thrown in the way, like cowboyz and Honda's. Um do I sense an approaching problem with this in the future!!!

Was with you in spirit, in between the wine, lattes and opera in the depths of the Brisbane countryside. Jimbour winery is obviously a local hog coffee stop, a crowd pulled out as I was exploring the gardens of the house during the first perfomance. Great to be in beautiful gardens pretty much alone with the haunting voices and music drifting in on the breeze.

Not quite a garage with swearing sweaty boys and bikes but both have their appeal!!!!

right, back on topic for a sec.....

i just checked my various 'sources'

at this stage, the expectation is that it will start raining (on and off) tomorrow morning sometime and will continue for most of the day but will discontinue at some point on friday night and will a farking minta day right thru to at least mid-evening on saturday (sunday might be a bit average)

so we might get damp roads here and there but they will probably dry out as the day wears on and its doubtful that we will get wet at all

After discovering that I had an unexpected day off yesterday (I think it was work's mistake, but who was I to argue) I awoke to a damp grey windy Palmerston day.

There were plenty of things I could have done, like lawns, fence repairs, bike cleaning etc, but I decided to take advantage of the freedom to get the bike out instead.

So I headed up the Pahiatuha Track and had a nice ride down the other side, just taking it easy enjoying the bike and the countryside. I turned off towards Mangamaire rather than going straight through, as it's such a good stretch of road.

Somewhere along the road I overtook a big Ford ute driven by a big bearded good ole boy and his lady and to my surprise I noticed he's sped up a little to keep up with me. I slowly drew ahead and stopped further down the line to check out a side road. When I got back into the swing of it I passed him again and again he sped up. So it became a kind of good natured chase along a good road.

Upon reaching SH 2 I turned south and kept my speed down whereupon the Ford overtook me again and kept going at about 130 or so. Well, he either had a damn good radar dectector on board, or was closely related to the local cop so I just kept pace with him . Pretty soon we were joined by an old gent in his late 70's driving a late model Mitzi sedan and the three vehicles just fell into a natural rhythm, enjoying the good road and the pace with absolutely no hint of anything dodgy and it was certainly not dangerous.

It made me think what a shame it is that the idiots out there really ruin it for everyone else. I mean here we were, three mature people doing 130 on a good dry road, good viz, in vehicles quite capable of it, plenty of stopping distance between us, and the most dangerous thing about it was the threat of a ticket.

OK, so a cow could have run onto the road, a boy racer could have come around the next bend on the other side of the road, lightning could have struck us all down, but none of this happened and it was a damn good clear run all the way around to the end of the Masterton bypass.

I stopped in Carterton for an OJ and had a quick chat to a Wellie lady biker on an SV who just happened to be heading on the opposite loop.

Onwards up the Taka's another stop at the top and was soon joined by a bloke on a BMW 800 ST, followed shortly after by a Daytona 675 and then another chap on a big Beemer tourer he was test riding.

A quick chat and then it was off down the hill and into Wellie. I really needed a coffee by now and so cruised down to WMC and parked up outside. At this time of day, that's where the sun was so it was a good sit down at the next door cafe for that coffee and newspaper

After a bit of a look around WMC I thought I had better get home sometime so I headed off around the basin at about 4.30. I'd not tried out the new bypass from that direction so I was interested to see how it worked. Well, no change around the basin i.e bumper to bumper, and I was stopped at the lights opposite Adelaide Rd. Getting the green I was just about to inch through the gaps and checked my mirrors. I didn't see anyone behind me but sensed someone and at that moment a woman on a big blue bike (didn't catch the make) had obviously had the same thought and squeezed through and made a good pace through the traffic right round the basin and I'm guessing either onto the motorway or up to Brooklyn. Nice move

Onto Buckle St and a Harley had appeared in the mirrors and we sort of kept pace all the way to the gorge where he headed out to the Hutt and I continued up the gorge and almost immediately came across a late model GSXR 750 also heading north. Again it was a leisurely cruise up the motorway where he turned off up Whitby way and I continued on the main line.

Along the QE Park straight I was overtaken by a GSR 600 and managed a quick friendly chat at the Paraparumu lights before he turned off towards the beach.

It was nearly dark by now and I had an uneventful run through to Shannon where I stopped for fuel. Had just filled up when I got a text from Chanceyy. At that moment I bumped into another KB member who was driving his car down to Wellie.

So, it was quite a sociable day one way or another. Good on the bikers out there who provided some good vibes, on and off your bikes

Had another today. After discovering I had another day off today, I gave my bike a good clean and lube this morning. This called for a ride so I popped down to ANZA and bought a tank protector (see pics) then headed out to Kimbolton, Apiti, and Pohongia Valley East road. This is one great ride alright, and today the road was much drier than last week, although there was still a lot of mud and loose chip around.

The bike now has nearly 5000 km on it and it's starting to settle down beautifully. Much smoother now than it was a few weeks ago!

Went for a nice little ride today,

Me too :ride: So thought I would give you all a mini ride report.
Second session with the Aussies was more of a ride than any sort of lesson. Rode to carpark on 250 then had a play with the 400 doing figure 8's emerg stops ect, then off for an explore:ride:
First to 'The Panorama' ,no surprise,it was a hill with panoramic views over the Gold Coast :sunny:and out to sea, bit hazy unfortunately but pics came out OK.
The road up there was lovely and windy with a 45 degree gradient so that made coming back down all the more interesting. Nick chose it for the view, bends, dips and crests and the numerous potholes etc, wanted to see if I had been paying attention:yes:
We then went to Hinze dam which is the water supply for the Gold Coast and only about 45 % full, better than the Brisbane one which is down to 12% and limiting my time in the shower.
Another windy fun road with some gravel and patches of water and potholes so all good practice and it went well. Great to be getting on some interesting roads so I can enjoy the track etc when I get back:yes:
There was even a coffee stop there but we resisted.

I lead part of the way home but frankly didn't have a clue where I was so luckily it was simple:yes:
Must have been learning about directions from Cowboyz :dodge:

Good news is I would have passed if I had been taking a test so guess that means I'm doing OK.
400/600 sport bike is our next plan and he is dreaming up a scenic trip to do which will challenge me a bit more.
A long way to go but think I have found a good bunch to warm up with and they are at least willing to let me take their bigger bikes out. Nick, the instructor, did jokingly offer me his Z1000 and then paniced when I said that was fine after I warmed up on the 600.

He is thinking of coming over with his missus to tour south island so I suggested he get on KB and maybe come along with us. More the merrier:yes:

Today reminded me of you all and I know you would have had fun on those roads, all be it a little faster than I did, being quick isn't everything so they tell me:sunny:

Sounds like you had a good day, thanks for the sharing with us, i am a little concerned however that they remind you of us, we are much better at sport than they are :gob:

No don't worry the Aussies don't remind me of you!! God the drivers are scary and so many idiots on bikes in tshirts and shorts and jandals even when it is cold. Makes me cringe.

I meant the windy roads and going out for a good ride :ride: in good company brought you all to my mind. Not as damp as the Wellie trip though.

You would have loved the weather and the terrain. Even Cowboyz wouldn't have got cold!!!

Another 4 hour play booked so can't wait:scooter:
Have a fab time at the weekend, I will keep everything crossed for the weather for you all:sunny:
